Taizo Kato (1887-1924) was born in Japan and immigrated to the US in 1906 at the age of 19. He owned and operated The Korin, a business enterprise that encompassed a camera store, a film processing lab, and a gallery where photography was presented alongside ceramics and paintings. (...)

Pictorialism was embraced as the namesake and organizing concept of the Japanese Camera Pictorialists of California, a group of photographers formed in Los Angeles’s Little Tokyo neighborhood in 1926. While Kato's early death in 1924 preceded the formation of the group, his photographs, along with his efforts in the community to contextualize photography with other art forms, undoubtedly laid the groundwork for the organization.

Clarence Hudson White (1871–1925) was an American photographer, teacher and a founding member of the Photo-Secession movement. He grew up in small towns in Ohio, where his primary influences were his family and the social life of rural America.

Clarence White has been described by photo historian Naomi Rosenblum as the one who may be considered the archetypal Pictorialist photographer of the United States.

In the early 20th century, the Photo-Secession movement was born. This movement was all about seeing photography as fine art and not just being for documentation. Pictorialism was celebrated and emphasized within the movement, which is a style of photography in which photos were usually manipulated to turn them into art. The subject matter was also usually styled and posed. Basically, Pictorialism was all about the use of artistic interpretation in photography instead of strictly capturing reality.

🔸 Arthur F. Kales - “The Call of the Sea” circa 1916. San Francisco Bay. Born in the Arizona territory, Arthur Kales received a law degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1903. While living in the Bay Area, he became interested in the burgeoning Pictorialist movement in photography that flourished there, and his images met with immediate success. Kales moved to Los Angeles to work in advertising but returned to San Francisco in 1917. In the following year, he nevertheless joined the Camera Pictorialists of Los Angeles.
