#Podcast Addict in March 2020.
Note
If you're willing to run another bonus poll, I'd love to know the percentage of your followers listen to audio dramas vs. actual play/TTRPGs vs. both. Or a Kinsey scale of sorts might provide better metrics. I would think there is a strong overlap but would love to see the numbers!
A Kinsey scale is interesting, and I could turn off reblogs so only you all (and people you manually share it with) would answer. That and the limit to just two types of podcasts might provide different results than this poll.
I'd also be interested in quantity of podcasts vs quantity of listening hours, and will try and figure out how to represent two different axes of data on a twelve-option single-choice poll. Given the different average runtimes for the different types of podcasts, someone (me, lol) could easily listen to more audio dramas but spend more hours of their life listening to actual plays.

Episode 67 (wooo!) 4.07 It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester!
What I consider to be the beginning of Castiel’s arc toward truly understanding Free Will and eventually accepting it for himself, this episode is packed with things that will become central tenets of the show for the rest of the series. Considering this is Julie Siege’s first episode, and she only wrote a total of six episodes over two seasons, her impact on the core of the narrative of the entire series can’t really be overstated.
Sam battles with his own power, his addiction to it, and can’t even see just how much it’s already begun to burn him. He also gets to meet angels for the first time, and it really blows the shine off the whole heaven, god, and prayer thing he’d always believed so strongly in before. And that revelation-- that angels are dicks-- doesn’t really help Sam with his own internal struggle this season. Poor Sam. Maybe he’s just not “sincere” enough in his belief in that Great Pumpkin...

MAG003, Across The Street
Case #0070107, Amy Patel Release date: 27 March 2016 First listen: 13th Oct 2020 I think, I think I was on the grounds duty, listening before guests got in.
Ok, so the headache’s still here, maybe it is a little bit of a concussion. Amy Patel, same hat? Same bumped hat.
- The statement giver and set up to this one felt like quite the change in pace. We’ve had 2 statements from a student and a recent graduate respectively, trying to enjoy life and cut loose a little. Amy is trying to enjoy life as well, but she’s turning back to education to do so. I don’t think there’s any indication of her studying in order to better herself and her situation, this is for personal fulfilment rather than career progression. But it struck me that in this instance, her encounter, and it’s a long set up so bear with me, it feels like almost she’s being targeted for her curiosity. Her desire to learn and expand her knowledge.
- I don’t know about other folks, but when lock down kicked in, I signed up for online learning courses. I was still working, but the rotas were pared right back to minimise contact and on the days I wasn’t in work I had sat on my bed and spiralled. Until I had written myself out a timetable for the day in order to give myself some structure. Yay… probable undiagnosed neurodiversity… Anyway, I did a course on the history of royal fashion. Absolutely nothing to do with my line of work, but it was grounding and gave me something to do when we were all needed to isolate. So, yeah, I get it.
- I found it interesting that she mentions the alternative was ‘become and alcoholic’ and Graham was a ‘chain smoker’. And then her watching him day to day. In a lot of ways, The Magnus Archives could be used as a tool to examine addiction in a lot of different forms. I’m given to believe that this was examined in the final season, with some unpleasantness being the fall out leading to Jonny disclosing his own history with addiction. I’d like to explore it, but I highly doubt I have the tools to do it justice and with the care the topic deserves.
- Anyone who can and does take good notes during a lecture, impresses and frightens me in equal measure. I always preferred workshops and discussions over lectures. Although lab hours can bite me. I don’t know if it’s the dyslexia, but I’ve typically been an auditory learner. Possibly another reason why podcasts and audiobooks have such a grip on me…
- Ah, the ordeal of being a single woman trying to use public transport… At night… In London… been there. It’s incredible how many people will see you in a situation where you literally can not run, and think it’s a good time to interact with you.
- Amy may have been a good one for The Eye? Studying, looking to expand her knowledge, people watching, making observations, watching her Graham out of her flat window. Maybe it’s the need to be aware of your surroundings. Maybe it’s not.
- ‘Liked the guy fine, but I still didn’t like the idea of him knowing where I lived.’ Once again, the back ground radiation of ‘the experience’. (I’m hesitant to call it the ‘female experience’ because, exclusionary. Anyone got a better phrase? Y’know, the ‘I don’t have the protection of being a cis/het/white/man’ experience?) But that need for privacy, even if there is a lack of a threat. Just, the knowledge in the safety of being unknown. Wait, this is a statement of The Stranger, OK, makes a bit of sense now that I’m writing it out.
- And cue head injury. The vanishing ‘window box’. And the table.
- The table was an interesting one to me as I started to learn about the Entities and looking back, I think I thought it was possibly and artefact of The Spiral rather than The Web. The intricate carved pattern, the hole in the middle could have easily been a door as the vacated space of a spider at the centre of a web.
- Now that I’m thinking about it, at some points there is a very fine line between the deceit and the manipulation.
- She mentions, months later, how she’d not spoken to him since the head injury. She had been busy with work and had to drop out of the course, and beyond work, she doesn’t mention any social contact. Graham ‘may have had a rich fulfilling life outside of the flat’ but if it mirrored his existence within it at all, it was a solitary one. I think I heard somewhere that after giving their statements, a lot of folks fell prey to The Lonely, isolated by having experienced things that no one ought to. I think I heard that Elias was telling Peter where to go, but so many folks were ripe for The Lonely before they came to the Institute. Many before they even had their brush with the Entities. I wonder if the other Entities could sense it, could smell them out. Knew that fear could take such a firm root if there was no support system to help weed it out.
- I wonder what about a person decides if they can recognise the Not!Them. Is it something about the observer themselves? Is it a predisposition? Is it random? Or is it selected by when would sew the most fear? After all, the Not!Them is recognised by an acquaintance, Amy with Not!Graham, a one time meeting, Melanie with Not!Sasha, and the daughter of The Kindly Mother. All very different levels of relationship, but all have ripples that spread wide.
- The observer becomes the observed and The Eye stirs.
- ‘I moved out soon after and never saw him again.’ … My dear, are you sure? Because, we already have a president of Entities not really needing to be given an address to find people and that thing can change everything about itself.
- ‘Tim came through with this one.’ Yeah he did! ‘He better not be using institute funds to woo filing clerks again.’ ‘Institute funds’ is an odd name to potentially have for one’s dick but I’ve heard odder.
- ‘Keep watching.’ I’m 3 episodes in. And I don’t think I could do anything else.

Honorable Mentions:
verpfwot’s Miette Halloween costume from 2021. At the end of 2021, it had 428 notes, and at the end of 2022 it had 6,186 notes. As of right now it’s up to a staggering 18,082 notes, making it my most popular post ever, even resoundly beating out Pika Sword Grandma above.
My 1,437 followers (up 25% from last year).
My Halloween Costume that was two scary for the cats.
My post about Billi the Cat giving a reminder that it’s time to take meds.
My Metamour’s short story Storage getting published in the anthology Manor of Frights, and read aloud on the Horror Addicts podcast. (Not that I had anything at all to do with either, but anyone who knows my tumblr knows I’m always reblogging my household to hype up their creative endeavours.)
My Spouse’s yarncraft and art. (See note above.)
Lucky falling off things.
Jinx and the giant sushi plush.
My Hero Forge Creations, especially this one I made for a friend. (I took the lessons learned from that 3D print in that post and tweaked it before I had it printed for her, so she got an even better one.)
The time Tumblr tried to sell me a Fallout Melee Weapon, and the many times they tried to sell me nothing at all.

Tonight, my mother and I truly connected during a conversation about space, which was a departure from her usual religious perspective. Recently, she's become more open-minded. After watching a podcast interview featuring a woman who had been to space, she became captivated by the story and displayed genuine curiosity about the subject. As a child, I often tried sharing space facts with her, but my efforts were always brushed aside. Throughout my childhood, she ensured I had food on the table, even during tough times, but unfortunately, she never sought to understand me. What I craved most from her was her time and attention.
The fact that she's now showing interest in my past passions brings mixed feelings. My mother remarked on how mind-blowing it must be to experience space firsthand, leading us into a discussion about its logistics. I informed her that only a small percentage of the universe has been explored, which surprised her. This led her to share her thoughts on the potential afterlife, a departure from the beliefs she might have adhered to in her religious bubble. It's possible that her inclination to talk stems from my grandmother's illness, making her yearn for deeper connections, just as I do.
In contemplating the afterlife, she mused about its nature. I hinted at my own theories but hesitated to share them fully, not wanting to overwhelm her. I hold the belief that the mysterious dark matter in the universe serves as a barrier preventing us from going beyond a certain point. Furthermore, I believe that if we were to breach this barrier, we'd discover that the entire universe constitutes a single entity—an entity of energy, devoid of a perceivable physical form. Yet, it is sensed through infinite versions of itself, simulated within every individual on Earth. This concept explains phenomena like déjà vu, astral projection, ghosts, astrology, parallel universes, and even maladaptive daydreams. This is precisely why I chose to tread lightly with this explanation.
Simultaneously, I was cautious not to arouse suspicion, especially because I had relapsed into substance abuse. Regrettably, addiction has been my coping mechanism due to the trauma I experienced during my early years. A second addiction took hold at the end of 2020, a response to the dehumanizing environment I faced in my retail job. My previous supplier supported me until her arrest in March of 2021. I managed a period of sobriety until connecting with a new source on 4/20/2021. However, this pattern persisted until 7/08/2022, when my stash was discovered by my mother. While our trust wavered, we reconciled after I promised to confide in her if my depression reached the levels of last December. Unfortunately, I failed to uphold that promise, succumbing to a relapse on April 4th.
It's likely that my mother suspects my ongoing struggle, but given the myriad challenges we're currently facing, she might be letting go to some extent. I can't fault her for that, especially since I've been far from an honest and responsible daughter. Fortunately, I've managed to maintain employment, defying the stereotype of a lazy addict.
My lack of fear for the repercussions stems from the fact that my brain chemistry has undergone irreversible changes due to substance use. I've come to terms with this, as I don't anticipate surviving my twenties. My perspective isn't born out of melodramatics but rather a response to the grim state of the world. The current environmental crisis and the economic struggles leave me living paycheck to paycheck. Without my mother's support and that of her friend, I'd be homeless. Adulthood has proven to be a challenge, and my struggles are compounded by my C-PTSD and the early signs of schizophrenia that are emerging within my fragile mind.
Interestingly, at my workplace, I'm perceived as a well-behaved and somewhat aloof individual. Little do they know... Sometimes, I catch myself staring at my reflection, practicing various facial expressions as a means of disassociation. I prepare my "mugshot" expression, acknowledging the possibility that I might need it for a photo opportunity in the future.
LISTENING TO: 🎶“You’re going to reap just what you sow” 🎶 Perfect Day (Lou Reed song)
I'd like to share this picture with you. I've HEAVILY edited it, but the original artwork was created on a brick wall that had been scratched and colored with chalk on Friday. The creator remains anonymous; I stumbled upon this piece on the side of a building in a shady part of town while I was running errands.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Caye over Zoom video! American Music Supply Sign up for updates from American Musical Supply by texting “BIB” to 800-458-4076 & get $20 off your first order of $100 or more. You’ll receive about 4 messages per month, message and data rates may apply. Consent not required for purchase, reply HELP for help and STOP to opt out. LA-based artist/producer/songwriter, Caye (pronounced KAI), shares his brand-new single, “LOSE SLEEP.” Written and produced by Caye himself, “LOSE SLEEP” is a melancholic, R&B tinged track about being addicted to something you know is bad for you. “LOSE SLEEP” follows the previously released tracks – "SCARS," “MILFORD SOUND,” “DOPAMINE,” “SOME LAKES” and “WE LOVE PT. 1” – which will be featured on his upcoming debut album, We Love. For the first time in his career, Caye is leaning into what makes him unique, instead of shying away from it. On both a musical and personal level, We Love reflects Caye’s own experiences as a creative and as a person. With this project, he feels at home singing over wavy didgeridoo lines, sultry piano, and rock inspired production, but it’s the lyrics, themes, and genre-less blend of influences that truly capture who he’s evolved into as an artist today. Caye recently announced his first ever headlining tour. Kicking off in Los Angeles on Wednesday, March 1st at The Moroccan Lounge, the tour will visit 10 cities across the US including San Diego, CA, Seattle, WA, Washington, DC and New York, NY before wrapping in Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, April 1st at Milkboy. Based in Santa Monica, Caye is an artist/producer/songwriter with an evocative falsetto and a gift for melodic improvisation. He's been steadily winning fans across the US and around the world since breaking onto the scene in 2015. Building on his classical training by experimenting with jazz, hip hop, calypso, and reggae, Caye defies genre to create a signature sound that is all his own. Inspired by the creative freedom of Bon Iver, the soul-moving rhythms of Bob Marley, and the lyrical genius of Kanye West, Caye creates music that’s as captivating as it is technically complex. Caye has always felt at home behind the console and began by rapping over his beats—earning Wiz Khalifa’s attention and ultimately a feature from him on Caye’s single “Easy”. Throughout the years, bars transformed to choruses and verses, as Caye honed his vocal control, range, and his now signature falsetto. In addition to producing all his own records, Caye has continued to hone his sound by producing for Alessia Cara, Meghan Trainor, and Abhi the Nomad. In 2020, he set out on an artistic exploration, traveling to remote regions of California with his instruments, art supplies, and a band of like-minded creatives. The last 2+ years have culminated in a full-length LP that thrives on headphones and speakers but is best experienced when improvised live—in the same method it was written. Grounded in his love for the steel drum, We Love explores Caye’s excellence across instruments that create music that’s emotionally engaging and spectacularly cinematic. 2022 promises to be his biggest year yet, which will introduce his expansive new sound to his ever-growing audience. The full album, We Love, will be released as singles, with a new one out each month for the rest of the year. He intends to continue spreading inspiration and building his reputation, with live shows beginning early in 2023. We want to hear from you! Find all details about the American singer, rapper, and songwriter in Doja Cat Biography
Born as Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini in 1995 in Tarzana, California, the daughter of South African actor, Dumisani Diamini, and painter, Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer is renowned globally for her stage name of Doja Cat. This unique name is inspired by cats and weed, wherein the slang for weed or cannabis is Doja. She happens to be the new-era American singer, rapper, record producer, and songwriter and was just a teen when she started creating and releasing music on Sound Cloud.
Tumblr media
Besides, in her youthful times, she used to indulge in distinct musical and cultural pursuits, including jazz, ballet, tap and break dancing. Two of her favorite adolescent pastimes were engaging with surfing and skating. In this context, the Doja Cat Biography from Wothappenonline showcases the uneventful musical journey that inspired her to make a successful and bold visual presence and receive several accolades in her musical career.
How Doja Cat Evolve From A Viral Novelty Track Buzz To A Mainstream Musical Heart-Throb?
 Early Years
Amala Zandile Dlamini, alias Doja Cat is a renowned American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer who was born on 21st October 1995 into a culturally-bound family in the Tarzana community of Los Angeles, California. Soon after her birth, Doja moved with her mother to New York City, living for five years, and later to Oak Park, California.
She was admitted to ballet, jazz, and tap dancing classes at the age of five. Thereafter, her family relocated to the Sherman Oaks locality in downtown Los Angeles, when she was 11 years old, and resided in an ashram by the Agoura Hills and practiced Hinduism for four years, singing bhajans at temples.
Beginning Of Career (2012 To 2017)
Dropping out of school, and spending days and nights browsing the internet, exploring instrumentals and beats from YouTube, she started to download and create her musical genre. Using GarageBand, she used to rap and sing, and also uploaded music on SoundCloud. She got her unique stage name by being inspired by one of her cats, and also her preferred strain of cannabis addiction.
In 2012, her musical journey began to take shape, releasing her debut album of EP, Purrr, and later on, she featured on the Fox series Empire. Subsequently, in mid-2015, Dojo Cat signed a contract with OG Maco’s brand, OGG. Thereafter, she also signed Maco and associated to produce the song, ‘Monster’, from Maco’s mixtape of Children of The Rage, released in 2017.
Release Of Mooo And Amala (2018 To 2019)
Again in February 2018, Doja Cat released the introductory single of ‘Roll with Us’, following the single music video of ‘Go to Town’, which happens to be the lead single from her debut musical record. Thereafter, in the same month, the second single album, Candy was also released. This musical track went to become viral on TikTok in 2019.
In March 2018, she also released her debut studio musical album of Amala, entailing three solo charts. The musical record later climbed to 138 on the Billboard 200 at the end of 2019. In 2018, Doja Cat was announced as the Milkshake Duck of 2018 by NME. Again in 2019 February, she also released the single video of ‘Tia Tamera’, along with the deluxe edition of Amala.
Quantum Leap with Hot Pink (2019 To Present)
The end of 2019 offered a breakthrough for Doja Cat into the mainstream musical journey. Starting in October 2019, she released her second single musical album of ‘Bottom Bitch.’ Thereafter, she also announced another single album of ‘Rules’, along with a second studio album of Hot Pink, in November 2019. Eventually, Hot Pink ascended to number 9 on the Billboard 200.
Tumblr media
Again, the solo version of ‘Say So’ climbed to number 5 on the Hot 100, fetching her first top-10 single spot, where it also became the most podcasted song of 2020 by any female singer in the US. Moreover, Doja Cat also presented the metal representation of ‘Say So’ at the MTV Europe Music Awards function in 2020, where she won the Best New Act accolade. In addition, she also has been awarded The New Artist of 2020 at the 46th People’s Choice Awards.
Final Verdict
Doja Cat has been quite famous for her musical versatility which entails her musical genre flexibility for pop songs, and her intrinsic capability to rap, sing, and produce. Thus, with the Doja Cat Biography furnished by Wothappenonline, she has become the musical heartthrob of this new-age musical industry.

OC HALLOWEEN CHALLENGE
Day 4: Buzzfeed Unsolved AU, Part 2
"Welcome to the season premiere of Buzzfeed Unsolved: Supernatural! I'm Ryan, this is Shane. And today we will be continuing the topic we had last week."
"The teen prostitute."
"Maybe use her name."
"Sorry, I'll be better about that."
"However, today we will not be talking solely about her. But rather about the Hotel Cortez as a whole."
"It's haunted?"
"Oh, it's haunted alright."
Construction on the hotel began in 1925. Even while the hotel was being built, builder James Patrick March was killing people and either putting their bodies into the wall or dropping them down the laundry chute. The grand opening was on August 23, 1926.
Over the next ninety years over a hundred people were murdered at the hotel. It is said that all of these people still roam the halls of the building.
S: Mitzy is among these people.
R: Yes!
It is said that these ghosts at the hotel haven't moved on, not because they don't want to, but because they can't. Hotel Cortez is a place where the people who die there are trapped forever.
S: Oh, man. They don't get to leave, huh?
R: No they're stuck there.
S: That must suck. You're dead and you don't even get to move on.
R: Mmmh.
Among these hundreds of ghosts are all the victims of James March, several gangbangers, drug addicts, prostitutes, and tourists, Mitzy Hall, who we had talked about last week, James March himself, and the more recent infamous serial killer Detective John Lowe.
S: I heard about him!
R: You probably would have. He killed ten people and his partner back in 2015, went on the run for a couple of years and was then killed by the police at the hotel.
S: He's there too?
R: Yes.
In 2020, two brothers who ran a true crime podcast went into the hotel to further investigate Mitzy's case. They never walked out of the hotel.
S: Oooo.
R: Yeah.
Current hotel owners Liz Taylor and Iris have claimed the Grey brothers left the hotel in the early morning, but their parents claim they haven't seen them since they left the hotel. Both owners have refused to comment further on this. They continue to renovate the hotel.
S: Iris. No last name?
R: None that is public.
S: She has chosen the Cher route.
R: Seems so.
S: And Liz Taylor made it to manager?
R: Mmmh.
S: Good for Liz.
R: Really is.
Since 1996, people have claimed one of the two hotel bartenders looks exactly like Mitzy Hall herself. Though no one has ever managed to take a picture to make any comparisons.
Tonight, Shane and I will be spending the night in the hotel in room 276. Mitzy's old room.
S: I hope we won't be the next disappearance. Actually I kind of do.
R: Of course you do.
S: I can't wait to meet Liz though. She seems cool.
R: Yeah. I also can't wait to meet Mitzy. I want to know if she did kill her daughters killer.
S: I hope she did. She deserved that.

fuck february, amiright?
i thought january was bad. but february. february was the stuff of nightmares. my cousin passed away from covid (you can read about her here; she was really an amazing person and i feel so lucky to have known her). i was finally formally diagnosed with PCOS (bittersweet, i guess). my car broke down. i took two (2) days off and it took me two and a half weeks to get caught up again. i can only hope march treats us all a little more gently.
the good news is, i finished revisions on my short story collection to send to my agent, finished workshop submissions for the semester, and now i can return to my first love, fanfiction. that i am constantly working through original fiction to return to fanfiction has been making me think a lot about the nature of a creative, capital-p Project. so, this month’s BTALA (been thinkin a lot about) is going to inspect the concept of a “project.”
new resource
last month i unveiled a folder of my favorite short stories which i’m pleased to hear several of you have perused and gotten some inspiration from. this month i’ve compiled my favorite personal essays. there are fewer essays than there are short stories because i’ve broken them into two groups: personal and craft. next month i hope to have the craft essays compiled.
i’m always looking for more things to love, so if you have recommendations for your favorite short stories and essays, i’d be happy to hear them!
writing-related posts
how to physically maneuver the revision process
the difference between M and E ratings of fic
resources for worldbuilding (check out the reblogs for more!)
a couple syntax/prose book recs
how to break a long work into chapters
march availability
unfortunately i have to cut my coaching hours down a bit, so i don’t have any openings left in march, but i have some availability in april. if you’re interested in a writing consultation, please fill out this google form!
you can learn more about my services on my carrd.
what i’m into rn
for the past year, i’ve basically been trapped in a 10x10 room, and my health is definitely reflecting that, both mentally (does anyone else feel like they’re living in groundhog day? just, every day being exactly the same except fractionally worse than the day before??) and physically (i reorganized the kitchen and could barely move for two days).
reader, i have discovered something called “walking,” in which i put on real human shoes and go outside. it feels strange, bestial. neighbors wave hello to me. a harrowing experience.
while doing this, this walking, i’ve been listening to the lolita podcast which a friend recommended to me, a ten-episode series that dives into everything lolita: the novel itself, its context, adaptations, greater cultural responses, and — as a sticker on my laptop says — vladimir “russian dreamboat” nabokov. as far as i can tell it seems well-researched and presents the many perspectives of lolita in a fair way. i’m only a few eps in, but i’m entranced so far. highly recommended if you, like me, have a complicated relationship with lolita.
i’ve also found myself mildly addicted to a mobile otome game called obey me, which. look i know it’s like the definition of cringe but it’s also mind-numbingly fun and if i want to spend my minimal free time pretending 7 demon brothers are all vying for my affection then that’s between me and god. it’s a lot of what i loved about WoW: frequent events, bright colors, a daily to do list of simple but satisfying tasks, many many rewards, and it doesn’t take itself very seriously. and if i have 4k fic written of mammon/reader that’s nobody’s business but mine and my longsuffering ao3 subscribers.
i’m telling you this because i don’t know anyone else who plays it and am desperate to trade headcanons. so if you play, or start playing, hit me up!! i will give u mad tips and daily AP.
been thinkin a lot about
the project. the project. even the word “project.” PROject (noun). proJECT (verb). what is the project? “project” comes from the latin pro and jacare which means “to throw forward,” or projectum which means “something prominent.” a projector throws forward an image. to project onto something means to throw your perspective onto something else. to embark on a project is to make something prominent in your life. the concept of “the projects” comes from public housing projects, the government throwing forward affordable housing.
what is the project? in joseph harris’ essay “coming to terms” he says that “to define the project of a writer is…to push beyond his text, to hazard a view about not only what someone has said but also what he was trying to accomplish by saying it.” harris’ perspective is that of an english teacher encouraging his students to read critically, not just to summarize a text but to find its project, its greater purpose. and while i first read this essay in a seminar on composition pedagogy, it stuck with me as a writer. it made me reconsider the greater nature of the creative project.
how many of us, if asked to describe our writing project, would begin with a plot or character premise, the nuts and bolts of a specific story? maybe even the working title? but i wonder, is breaking out the plot really the project? is the discipline of sitting down and typing really the project? and when the story is finished, is the project over? what is the project?
in 2019, i wrote 86k words of a novel. i began revising that novel last fall, and i’m finding that i’ll probably keep maybe less than 10k of that initial draft. i’m not bothered by that. the novel i wrote before that started at 125k, then i rewrote the entire thing to 200k, then i whittled it back down to 160k, and next i’ll be tasked with paring it back down to 80k. i’m not bothered by that either. in the past five years or so i’ve written about 2 million words, and i’ve only published 20k of them. only 1% of what i’ve written, i’ve published. in the words of lauren cooper (catherine tate), i’m not bothered.
i used to see publication as the birth of the project, and writing it akin to a long gestation period. then i saw publication as the death of the project, and its life was lived in its drafting. now, publication seems irrelevant to the project. the confines of a story and its many revisions are also irrelevant to the project. the beginning of a story is not the start of the project and the end of the story is not the end of the project. the project is larger than the story, its revisions, its publication, and its eventual readership.
i think it took me so long to see this because for so many years i was still in my first project, the sex project, an exploration of trauma and sexual identity, which began in 2014 with destiel fanfiction, endured through many fandom shifts, my MFA, years adrift as an adjunct, all the way through 2020 with the completion of my short story collection. i used to wonder how anyone could write about anything other than sex. to me it was the only topic worth my attention. i was certain that i would spend my entire life being a sex writer and i’d never find fulfillment writing a young adult sci fi adventure or a highly literary novel about complicated family dynamics. i was baffled by people who were interested in other things, who could write entire novels without using the word “cock” even once.
then my sex project ended. i don’t know when exactly it happened or why, but suddenly i realized i never wanted to write another artful description of an orgasm or find a tactful euphemism for a vagina ever again (personally i prefer “wet cunt” because not only is it blunt, i find it phonetically pleasing). obviously i’m still writing explicit fanfic but it doesn’t feel the same as it used to. sex feels more sidelined to me, even if it’s still the center and drive of a fic. i no longer get any personal satisfaction from writing it, although i do get satisfaction in sharing the work for readers to enjoy.
it’s like i’ve somehow solved the biggest puzzle of my life. or i guess made peace with my meanest monster, that extremely complicated double-mind of desire that some non-sex-repulsed asexuals feel: you want to feel desire you can’t actually feel so you write it into fiction, to try to understand this thing you can’t have and which society tells you you’re missing, and you don’t even know if you don’t have it, because you still feel desire for affection and intimacy, and maybe even a desire to be desired. and for those of us who are asexual and have c-ptsd, sex you don’t actually want (but don’t know you don’t want, because maybe you’re ambivalent and mildly curious and touch-starved) and an unrelenting drive toward people-pleasing can be a dangerous combination. how can you ever know what consent is if you always put other people’s desires above your own?
maybe i’m alone in this. maybe i’m not. maybe for most people, wanting sex is a light switch: yes i want it, or no i don’t. but for me, i had to write a whole lot of words to figure out things like desire, consent, intimacy, forgiveness, the shape that good love takes. the lengthy theoretical flowchart of “i might be interested in having sex if this and this and this and this and this happens in this exact order and under these exact circumstances.”
it was hard to write something into reality that i have never seen except in pieces, in subtext i clung to with no lexicon to give it shape and meaning. te lawrence in lawrence of arabia. some of tarantino’s early work. the film benny and joon. and weirdly, the star wars prequels (that one’s hard to explain; i’ll spare you). i don’t think the sex project was about coming to terms with my asexuality as much as it was trying to organize my thoughts and feelings by continuously rendering my own experiences within a greater, shinier ideal — like how you sometimes have to unravel the entire skein of yarn to find the loose end, and only then can you get started.
i guess i’m in the infancy of the power project now. i’m moving toward themes of control, infamy, greatness. the exact circumstances in which atrocity occurs. how people rise into leadership and fall from grace. the consequences of success. i don’t know why this project has come to me, or what, if anything, it has to do with me. i’m not famous and have no intention of becoming famous; i don’t have social power or influence, at least not beyond my little corner of fandom, and i’m not interested in having it. and yet, here we are, already hundreds of thousands of words in.
my fics digging for orchids (tgcf) and a standing engagement (the hunger games) deal with the detriments of fame. and even float (breaking bad) to a degree is about the aftermath of being so close to power. my novel cherry pop, loosely based on macbeth, is about an ongoing power exchange between two teenage girls. my other novel, vandal, is about a girl who believes she has magic powers and casts a spell on her neighbor to fall in love with her. and i’m in the very early stages of a novel called groundswell, a cult story i’ve been wanting to write for years. i had no idea why i couldn’t write it until i realized it wasn’t yet my project. i’m not even to the stage of developing characters, let alone a premise or plot. i’m still just building my aesthetic pile (i discuss the aesthetic pile here, as well as vandal in more detail), watching documentaries on cults, reading books, finding inspiration, marking down ideas as they come. it may be years before i’m ready to sit down and write it.
now that i know what the project is, i have more patience with myself. it doesn’t bother me to rewrite a novel from the beginning, or to scrap novels altogether, because the story isn’t the project. the project cannot be diminished by cutting words, sentences, paragraphs, entire chapters. the project does not have a product. the project cannot be published. the project is in the practice, in dragging the impossibly large into clear, acute existence, so you can see it. so you can see the very center of what you thought was an unknowable thing.

Jenna Coleman appeared on the “Table Manners with Jessie Ware” podcast today, available here:
https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/table-manners-with-jessie-ware/id1305228910?i=1000508414620
It’s a lovely interview, conducted by Jessie Ware and her mother Lennie Ware, that primarily focusses on food.
Jenna and Jessie already knew each other from various fashion shows, like this Miu Miu show in 2018, when they were pictured together with Lily Collins:
Tumblr media
To begin with, they mention how normal, down to Earth, gorgeous, and demure Jenna is, that she is becoming a national treasure. How she took her friend Sally to the Miu Miu Fashion Show in Paris (see picture below, from Jenna’s Instagram stories at the time)
Tumblr media
As always, Jenna talked about how terrified she was when she started shooting The Serpent in Thailand, working only together with French actors who she constantly had to speak French with. But how after a while, she and Tahar Rahim had established a dynamic, and she became confident in playing her role.
She also mentioned the difficulties of filming, how a 4 month shoot became a 13 month shoot, how the party scenes were shot in monsoon season, when every few minutes they had to go to shelter and perhaps film a scene with the monkey, before trying again. How the filming was stopped with just 4 days of filming left in Bangkok, and how the scenes in India, Paris, and Thailand were then filmed in Tring in August 2020. For that filming, a COVID test was part of the makeup and costume procedure.
The only things Jenna took from the set of The Serpent was a 1970s pencil sharpener, and a little Thai statue (and a fake newspaper with Charles and Marie on the cover, as the Interpol most wanted criminals). While Tahar Rahim took several of the tailored suits and sunglasses he wore in the show, Jenna didn’t take any of her amazing wardrobe with her.
Jenna talked about how in her childhood, her gran would make sunday roast, with the entire large family coming for that.
She mentioned that as child she went through a phase when she wouldn’t eat anything besides cream cheese sandwiches and Heinz tomato soup. And sometimes she would hide her sandwiches in a vase, to pretend she had eaten them, because she just wanted to go back to play, rather than eat.
But she said that now she loves to cook. She spoke in depth about being diagnosed with a gluten allergy 5 years ago, and how it was difficult at first to deal with that, but that she has absolutely gotten used to it by now. But it means she can’t eat pasta, pizza, croissants, or drink beer (some examples that Jenna chose). It was incredible how much that changed her life.
When asked what she would have for a last meal, or a last day of meals, Jenna answered that she would have things that she wouldn’t otherwise be able to eat because of her gluten allergy. She said that she had prepared for this question, but didn’t know she had to select a whole day’s worth of food.
So her choice was: egg and soldiers for breakfast, with two flat white coffees. Jenna said that she was a massive coffee addict. For lunch she would have pizza, which once again she can’t eat, but if it’s her last day, then she wouldn’t care about her allergy. As a side, she would have a fresh Italian tomato salad with basil and olive oil.
For dinner, she would have the raw salmon with avocado mousse that she had had several times in Paris, when she was there last year with her mum. For a main course she would have medium rare steak with chimichurri, fries, and garlic spinach. She said that she does like cooking steak herself, but that she is a haphazard cooker, gets the timings wrong, and is impatient.
And for desert, she would have her 5 year old niece’s “joy bowls”. Jenna is not really a sweet person, but when she met her family over Christmas, her niece had a recipe book of “happiness bowls”, that she renamed to “joy bowls”, which really helped lift the spirits of everyone at the time.
As a drink, and I don’t think anyone will be surprised by this, Jenna chose a margarita. Apparently, she never liked them, until one year ago, but she has been pefecting her recipe for it, and considers it to be her best cooking. She does not like wine that much, and gets hungover after drinking one glass of red wine, and her favourite type of wine is Rosé. But she does like to use wine in her cooking.
She also talked about filming The Cry in Melbourne, Australia, and eating fantastic brunches there.
Jenna also talked about her next projects. Apparently, she will start filming for her secret NDA project in February, and then film her indie dark comedy in March.
Finally, Jenna mentions doing karaoke in Ibiza when she was 12, and singing “Wake me up before you go go” together with a friend, who was Charlotte Church, who was so much better at singing than she was. Jenna hasn’t done karaoke ever since then, and has had a fear of singing since then. For Victoria, she initially considered having someone voiceover for when she had to sing there, but in the end decided to do the singing parts herself after all.
Jenna was in the Cotswolds while conducting this interview over Zoom, and apparently had a horrible internet connection.
