Apple was counting on “innovation” to keep itself doing well (even as this issue’s editorial noted how the company had let the rest of the industry more or less catch up over the past decade), and technologies including the PowerPC (Dennis Allen insisted “PowerPC systems will become a market force” in the editorial), improving what was now being called the “MacOS” (and planning to license it too, even at the risk of being “too late at last”), and trying to counter “all the good software is on Windows now” with “componentware” including a framework called “OpenDoc” were in play. The feature article did, though, mention that “Although outright collapse is unlikely, Apple could succumb to a fate almost worse than death: irrelevance. That’s what happened to Commodore after its disastrous fall in the mid-1980s, despite the cutting-edge technology of the Amiga.”
