My engagement rings feel like part of me. I’ve represented them here using Affinity Designer on an iPad Pro. I love taking inspiration in something as familiar to me as my hands and jewelry.  My fiancé and I decided to get engaged somewhat spontaneously! Once we agreed that we wanted to get married, my fiancé insisted that our engagement be special. We went out immediately to look for a placeholder ring so that we could tell his parents on Christmas. We had our eye on another ring (the white diamond), but we wouldn’t be able to get it for weeks, so we ended up finding a black diamond in yellow gold that was absolutely perfect. We were so excited that we found such a perfect ring that we bought all the white flowers at four different shops in our neighborhood!  After the excitement died down, my fiancé and I decided to revisit our decision about getting another engagement ring when the one I had was so perfect. I was more than happy with the ring that I had, but Matt loved the idea of the two rings as a set. He liked that the white diamond was more traditional, but he loved that the black diamond ring was handmade and artisanal.  Together, I feel like these two rings represent my relationship and my aesthetic perfectly. I love black, and I love white. I think circles are the most perfect shape. I love classics, and I love it the most when they’re modern too. My fiancé told me that he wanted to make me feel special in a way that no one ever had before, and he accomplished his goal. I have never felt more seen. It’s amazing that I was lucky enough to meet someone like him, and every time I look at my hands, I am reminded of the promise that I’ve made to dedicate them to his and our wellbeing.

I got engaged in Hawai’i!

Hello everyone!

Sorry I haven’t been posting lately. I was on vacation in Hawai’i for a week. We stayed with Steve’s sister and her fiance. I would love to make a post about every day we were there and what we did but to be honest that would take too long and not all of it is worth documenting. However there is one day that is worth posting about. On the 3rd day we were there. The night before, Steve told me to wear a dress. I didn’t think anything of it. I just figured he wanted me to look nice for pictures he wanted to take.

The following morning we get up early. I wear my indigo dress I bought from El Salvador, which ironically enough my Mom bought for me while we were there. We head out to Tantalus Lookout. We had a view of the skyline and out to the edge of the island. There was a bridge for people to walk along and after taking a few photos we walked down to the grassy area beneath. Steve set up his DSLR on a tripod and he started taking pictures. After a while we walked down to a tree and his sister took pictures of us. As we were walking up he makes a comment about being worried about us. I immediately freaked out and asked why. He tried to brush it off and said nevermind but I kept pressing the issue. Finally he says, “My legs are about to give out and I’m worried I’ll go rolling down the hill and take you with me.” I laughed and called him an asshole.

We get back up to the top to where the camera was. Tells me to face a certain direction and tells me not to move. At this point I’m only slightly suspicious. He comes up behind me to hug me. I can feel his heart pounding against his chest. I feel like I know what he’s about to do but I kept telling myself that it couldn’t be it. He tells me again to face the view and to not move. I stand there and I can hear movement behind me. My heart is pounding at this point.

I hear him behind me and he starts talking. "Keep looking out there. But I have one question to ask you..." I closed my eyes, still not facing him kind of frozen in disbelief. I turn around and there he is, on one knee, with a red box in his hand with a diamond ring inside. I covered my face in shock. Ready to cry. I stare at the ring and then at him. His eyes bloodshot ready to burst into tears himself. Without saying a word I just kiss him and hug him. He gets up to hug me again. During all the hugging I'm trying to discreetly remove the ring I already had on my ring finger. He tells me to put on the ring myself but I tell him he's supposed to do it for me. Eventually he does. Then he asks me if that was a yes.

I was so in shock I couldn't hear if he said anything after mentioning he had a question to ask. To be honest, I can't recall him asking the question, "will you marry me" and he claims he did. I can't remember. I didn't even answer “yes” if he did ask. If he truly didn't ask and I didn't answer, it wouldn’t matter. Simply because I figured it was a question that had been answered a very long time ago.

I had no idea he was even planning on even proposing anytime soon. It was a complete surprise. I didn't expect it to even happen on Hawai'i of all places. I would have assumed when he did propose it would be at home and with no one around. He wanted it to be private which I was completely okay with. But I was okay with his sister and her fiance there. It was perfect.

It’s been a week since he proposed and it still doesn’t feel real. When flying back home, it was my birthday so I was expecting it to be a sad day. That was the day that we buried my Mom a year ago. However after getting engaged my mood changed. I was happy. I was incredibly content. I wanted to celebrate and be around the people I love. In feeling this, it didn’t seem right to me. Deep down I know that my Mom would want me to celebrate and be happy. I try to keep that reminder in the back of my mind. My Mom is gone but I shouldn’t let that hinder me from living my life. From being happy.

Since I won’t be posting the video of the proposal I figured I would tell the story. I wanted to keep the video for ourselves, close friends and family.

Now that I’m home I’m hoping to get back into the swing of things. Thanks for being patient.

The Proposal

Being that we've known each other since High School, hanging out, talking, and being myself was never a problem around Vincent. Our dates were fun and full of information, furthering our want to be with eachother. Vincent is unlike any man I've dated. He sends random flowers and gifts to my job and has all my co-workers making fun of me and probably jealous at the same time. Some times I get flowers when the previous delivery hasn't withered away yet. My Supervisor once said, "tell him to let the other ones die first man"!!! So now that you know a little history, here's how the proposal went:

It was Valentine's Day, a regular work day, I was probably more anxious to see what other people received, because I always get flowers. I had coworkers who came to my desk saying that they just know that I'm going to get a big ol' bouquet of flowers. The day went on by and nothing spectacular happened. At first I wasn't really worried, he always sends me flowers, it's just a regular day. I can't lie though, by 4pm I was checking my email a few times to see if the front desk messaged me about any deliveries. NOTHING!

So I went home. We hadn't made any plans or talked about doing anything. We knew the restaurants would be crowded, but I thought we would do SOMETHING!!! After going back and forth about who was going to go to who's house, he decided to come to mine. I had a gift for him. A nice watch that was all wood, and a 12 slot leather case, with a glass top to keep ALL his watches in. He pulled up, I didn't see any bags, balloons, or boxes in the car so now I'm kind of confused. What are we doing? He didn't say to get dressed or anything, I had on jeans and sneakers. Where are we going? This dude pulled off and just drives, we end up in East New York, and pull up in a friends parking lot. Now I'm REALLY confused! "Why are we here"? Nothing personal towards the friend, but it's not where I thought I would be spending my Valentine's Day. Hesitantly I begin walking to towards the door, thinking maybe it's a double date or something, ok cool! (then I remember her saying one day, that she wanted to be a part of any proposal), so now my mind is racing!!!

As I'm walking towards the door he stops me and asks "where you going"? Ok man, now I'm really confused, "so why are we here"!!!!???? Then it hits me, WE HAD OUR FIRST KISS IN THIS PARKING LOT!!!!!! Awwww Vinny!!!! So we re-enacted our first kiss, and then got right back in the car and drove off. "Now where"!? This time we end up at Carnarsie Pier. This is where we spent most of our time during the summer. Just walking and talking, sitting and chilling. There were other cars there, which was kind of strange, it was February, kind of cold. No one was outside their cars. So now I'm thinking, "are these my family members and are they going to jump out at any moment"? We get out and did our usual, go look at the water, hug, and take a selfie! Then, back to the car we go, my ankles were cold!

As we sat in the car and talked a bit, I could tell that something was on his mind. He was able to distract me for a moment and get me to look at a car a few spots down (What he said was, "omg look! those at those people, they're doing it in the car". The perv in me just fell for it). When I turned back around, in my peripheral I could see something sparkling! There is was, he was holding a ring box box, opened, and a beautiful engagement ring was in it. MY MOUTH JUST DROPPED!!!!! He told me he loved me, and that he wanted to take this journey with me........."WILL YOU BE MY WIFE"!!!! I was able to get out the words, "OF COURSE"!

It was then that I realized that I didn't want a public proposal for real, nor did I want it to go viral. The ugly cry came, and boy was it ugly!!!!! There was nothing I could do to stop the tears, and it wasn't because he proposed, of course I was happy, we talked about marriage all the time. It was the fact that someone loves me enough to want to spend the rest of their life with me. The fact that even though I wasn't at my best, he appreciated me, who I was, and who I wanted to become. I'm forever grateful and thankful for Vincent. Now I get to spend the rest of my life with him!!!
