God forbid you don’t performatively remind everyone that you do hate cops, actually; and god forbid that you don’t find that True Healing and Happiness for Disco Elysium’s characters can only be achieved by leaving the force.

Metas could be written about how Kim and Harry are actually deeply flawed people who enjoy wielding some form of authority in a way that they actually feel best working as cops

(is it healthy? no. is it Good™? no. Is it true to their character? this is where media interpretation comes in)

Metas could be written about how that doesn’t mean ACAB isn’t real, that just means they’re the kind of shitheads (that we, the players, still love) who enjoy being cops

Metas could be written questioning the amount they’d have to change to adapt to a life as civilians, how much and what kind of a push they’d need to go for it,  if it’s change they could even manage, if they could financially survive it, if they could find fulfillment in any other career, at their age

But no. Why waste time on that instead of easy slogans. I mean, we like them, these characters, and we don’t want to feel guilty for liking them, because what does it say about us, then, that we like flawed cops?

(nothing it says nothing it says we played a good nuanced extremely well-written game that skillfully made us like the sort of character whose past actions include sequestering some woman and beating a dude into disability. that’s what it says. i’d even argue that discomfort is part of the point)

something i’ve observed while watching videos of Videogame Men talking about punishing indie games is that they’re always like this game is INSANE HELL DIFICULTY it will BEAT YOUR ASS it will MAKE YOUU CRY AND CALL YOU A BABY!!! and then i play the game and it’s not that bad and it turns out the gamer with the youtube channel may just not be very good at this specific kind of videogame. and im not a Gamer whos Skilled at videogames i dont know how to aim and i only care about games that are 70% reading. and its never an AVGN type guy its always the video essay introspective I Have Deep Things To Say ones doing this. I’m not talking about shit like dark souls btw i mean like pathologic or fear and hunger. Which are games i feel are gonna wreck your brain only if youre wayyy to used to like, aaa first person shooter or high profile rpg-elements sandbox games.... like i’ve seen people call disco elysium a game that’s hard to get into gameplay wise. but i think if i gave my 50yo dad disco elysium and left him to his own devices he wouldnt have a hard time learning the gameplay ropes of it because he’s not brain poisoned by skyrim. like sometimes the problem is that you haven’t dedicated your middle school years to playing shitty indie horror rpgmaker games with a lot of unfair instakills and shitty puzzles.... and now you automatically assume the obvious way to beat a game is thru sheer violence and skill so the moment a game puts you in a position of Uh oh maybe you can’t kill this guy even if you get really good! maybe inflicting as much violence as you can isn’t the way forward! it makes videogame men go 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 is this the hardest most challenging videogame EVER?

I am currently throwing random Jean hcs at the wall to see what sticks, what do you think about Jean being the guy who always catches whatever illness is going around? You would think it'd be Harry, but no, it's Jean, he's depressed, buff yet dehydrated etc and Pale help him if somebody coughs in his general direction. He's the guy that gets warned about catching a cold due to wind, rain or snow, etc and then it actually happens. Not sure if this one's a winner or not, thoughts?

Never thought about it before but what you say makes sense to me! Being depressed, probably troubles sleeping, and all, I guess that could make him vulnerable to any little virus or bacteria, though I would see him a the kind of a person who just takes painkillers&antypyretics and tries to keep up with his normal routine (somebody put him to bed please) and doesn't even want to hear that he should get a rest unless he's forced to (not sure what would be enough for him to feel forced though. Maybe if he would be they won't let him in to the precinct cause they don't need all the officers to fall ill, but I doubt anybody would give enough shit, honestly...) Or! I totally see him as someone who doesn't fall ill very seriously (so the part with drugging himself up and staying on tracks still checks out), but to this never lets himself cure properly so after cold he catches he keeps coughing around for two or three months because.

And he's totally allergic to pollen. Can't change my mind.

I did a lil deep dive on real-life equivalents of pyrholidon and the most popular contender was 3-meo-pcp, which is kind of the ‘adderall’ of the pcp family. It’s a dissociative with stimulating and psychedelic effects. It has a crazy amount of potential side effects that can explain… quite a lot about Harry.

Internal hallucinations. Disinhibition. Conceptual thinking. Dream potentiation. Increased music appreciation. Seizures. High blood pressure. Heart problems. AMNESIA. In low dosages it enhances your senses and motor skills. It can be used for pain relief. One of the side effects is literally existential self-realisation. And there’s so so much else it’s incredible I really recommend looking at them all!! It’s fascinating

But it’s also incredibly toxic and, drumroll please… high doses can result in psychosis and mania. So I’m thinking:

Harry took shitloads of pyrholidon during his martinaise binge and is either still coming off it in game or it permanently damaged his brain years ago

Harry has been abusing it for years and it’s the source of his voices?

Harry always had his voices but all the years of substance use and trauma have amplified them

Something else? I feel like it plays a way bigger part in who Harry is than it reveals in game but idk

Pyrholidon is probably different in some ways but similar enough, right? And similar enough that if combined with speed, which has comparable effects, it would explain a LOT about Harry. Not to mention the drinking and smoking and who knows what else
