28/?? Childhood TV Shows You Should Watch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Title: Punkin'Puss & Mushmouse
Episodes: 23
Original Air Date: 1964 - 1966
Synopsis:
The show features a hillbilly cat called Punkin' Puss who lives in a house in the woods of the southern US. Punkin' is preoccupied with a hillbilly mouse called Mushmouse who lives there too, and Punkin' frequently tries to shoot him with his rifle. In many cartoons, one of Mushmouse's cousins visits and gives Punkin' Puss a hard time.
My Rating: 6/10
My Reasoning:
This is very much Tom and Jerry if they were dumbed down and sent to live in the country as hillbillies. Do I find it entertaining? Yes. Do I like it better than the actual Tom and Jerry? No.
Don't get me wrong, it's still worth watching, and I think you should check it out. However, it's not the best show ever lol.

Looks like “the boss of these yar hills” got a little tied up XD
After 50 years, I finally got around to coloring this in. I decided to challenge myself and make a background, namely based on the background from the only episode Susie McStomp appeared, “Catch As Cat Can”. I don’t consider myself a modern day Norman Rockwell, so things were kept pretty simple, lol. But still, I like the way it turned out!
I was going for a “does he or does he not” expression for Punkin’s face—for him, a self-professed horn ball that’ll go after anything that moves, Susie’s pretty low on his list, in no part due to her chasing after him like a wild dog after its prey. But then again, a part of him just might be attracted to her; he just doesn’t know it yet. As for Susie, you don’t need to even GUESS what’s on her mind 😏🤣
Enjoy!

The next time someone say's "When did kid's cartoons get so woke and political?", I might suggest that you might point them in the direction of, of all things, "Yogi's Gang".
Yogi's Gang was a series from 1973 which was one of Hanna Barbera's "All Stars" series where ALL their major talking animal characters were part of an ensemble team. (There are others, "Yogi's Treasure Hunt", "Yogi's Laff-a-Lympics" etc etc).
So we had@
Atom Ant
Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy
The Hillbilly Bears
Hokey Wolf and Ding-A-Ling Wolf
Huckleberry Hound
Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har
Magilla Gorilla
Peter Potamus and So-So
Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks
Punkin' Puss & Mushmouse
Quick Draw McGraw & Baba Looey
Ricochet Rabbit & Droop-a-Long
Secret Squirrel and Morocco Mole
Snagglepuss
Snooper and Blabber
Squiddly Diddly
Touché Turtle and Dum Dum
Wally Gator
Yakky Doodle
Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo Bear
All on a quest to help the world from their flying ark (I have no idea why).
Their villains are embodiments of various flaws and vices, at a level which Captain Planet would have found a bit... on the nose
Their first one is perhaps the most "slapped with a wet fish across the face" level of subtlety, but you have to admire the studio for gifting the world:
Doctor Bigot
youtube
As you see, he lives up to his name (along with the minions Professors' Haggling and Bickering), and he plans to sow strife by making everyone more aware, and resentful, of differences... pretty much because he's an absolute asshole.
Other villains include: The Greedy Genie, the Envy Brothers, Lotta Litter and "Smokestack" Smog.... like I said, low key it ain't.
But given that it's now a half century old, it's nice to be able to point to something and just say to those who ask the question posed at the top of the post: "Well, there are probably earlier examples, but this is one of the first and most blatant, don't you think?" :)

Meanwhile, back in the Ozarks ...
Beside some rather cool and silvery-blue river, we find no less than Punkin Puss preparing to reduce himself to essentially himself, preparing for a freshewater-pearl dive session to get enough decent-looking such pearls for to ready into a necklace for his girlfriend (and maybe sweetheart).
And what could feel more interesting than to see Punkin Puss shelling open some freshwater clams to find--miracle of miracles!-- a freshwater pearl of the finest calibre.
At any rate, Punkin Puss can forget about chasing and dispatching Mushmouse for the nonce, if but for the experience of diving and the thrill of maybe finding a freshwater pearl in the end.

UPDATE - October 24, 2022
Hey folks! Here I am again with another update! It won’t be quite as long as the last one, but it’s still chock full of information. So, buckle up, buttercups!
Tumblr media
Firstly, I’m happy to report that I made it through my first week of school in tact! I’ve learned from my mistakes and have been breaking down my homework into manageable chunks, which has made it much, MUCH easier to not only get it done, but to also get some creative things done. I have two papers coming up this week, and a lot of reading on my end, so I’ll probably be busy again, not coming on unless I have enough time. I will be staying in touch with my good friends, though, so I’m not gonna COMPLETELY radio silent.
The real enemy last week was work! My schedule was all over the place, and it left me feeling pretty darn stressed out. Thankfully, I didn’t let that get in the way of my homework, but man, when I say I practically ran out the door Saturday… 😩 Good news is, I’ll be taking Friday and Saturday off so I can have some much needed rest and time to myself to take care of homework. Oh, and my parents are coming to visit, so it’ll be fun to catch up with them!
Well, that’s all that I can think of regarding life updates. Next up, I have a few cool creative ideas that I’d like to share with you all!
For starters, Blazin’ Trails is back on the horizon! I’ve been working on the final chapter for the last couple of weeks, and I’m super excited to post it! I went from having no idea where to take the story, to now wanting to spend every moment I’m not working on homework on this. There are cool cameos from certain characters, one of my favorite OCs gets a bigger role, and things will be set up to go into the next phase, which is Blazin’ Trails Redux! Ideally, I’d love to have this story’s final chapter out on November 20th, which will mark the story’s sixth anniversary, but since I’ll be working on FLaG Remastered (more on that below) for NaNoWriMo, I can’t guarantee that. If I get that out earlier, that’d be awesome as heck. But just know that I haven’t forgotten about my current longest running story.
On the topic of NaNoWriMo, I have decided to go forward with my plans to make FLaG my project. After debating on the title for ages, I finally decided to come up with a name, which is “For Love and Glory Relance”. The Relance part comes from the French “la relance”, which means “revival”. Out of all the words I could find, I figured that would fit best—not to mention be roll off the tongue easier than the French translation of Remastered! I still have a few ideas with where I would love to go with this remastered project, and similar to BT, I would love to post this story (once it’s been cleaned up, of course) on the original’s fifth anniversary. What said ideas will be, though, will be hidden until the story is officially posted!
Recently, I’ve been in a huge mood for Punkin’ Puss and Mushmouse content, including a little doodle that I’ve posted on my main blog. I’ve been rereading “Temporary Truce”, and I’m thinking that some time next year, once I finish up Big City Tabby, I want to get started on the sequel of this story, titled “A Hillcat’s Requiem”, as soon as possible! I MAY or may not put up a few rewrites of certain scenes from Temporary Truce just to give you an idea of what to expect from the sequel…not to mention to share my improvement as a writer!
I’m planning on updating my accounts soon (I’ve had the same format for the last year, lol!) to make them look better. Obviously not now, but just expect a few changes starting this week!
That’s all I have to share with you all for now! See you all soon!

Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight- Punkin Puss and Mushmouse- “Courtin’ Disaster”
Tumblr media
Does anybody remember these cartoons? These were a part of The Magilla Gorilla Show, and asked the question “what if Tom and Jerry were a pair of hillbillies, and weren’t funny?”
Now I do have a soft spot for Hanna-Barbera’s work, and do genuinely think that their earliest series are of quality, but not so much at this point. A lot of their best jokes and ideas had been used at this point.
But I do like going back to the silly animal cartoons every now and then, usually the good ones like Yogi Bear and Quick Draw. But this time, I added some of the lesser characters, like Hokey Wolf and these guys. So let’s see what’s going on here.
In this one, Punkin Puss wants to feud with his buddy Mushmouse, as they usually do, but Mushmouse has other plans. He’s going out to see the lady he’s courtin’, Honeybun. Unfortunately, Honeybun has no patience for a meek little mouse and wants him to stand up to Punkin Puss. That doesn’t go well until she gives Mushmouse some, ahem, incentive to prove his worth.
And that’s fine, a cute joke is added here and there. But it really loses me in the end, when Honeybun is so pleased with Mushmouse’s performance that she talks about wedding plans, and their future afterwards. That prospect freaks out Mushmouse so much that he runs away and goes back to feuding with Punkin Puss like they’re back to normal.
Now if this was showing Mushmouse thinking that he and Honeybun haven’t been together for long enough to get hitched, that’d be one thing. But no, the impression that I get it “haha marriage is scary and women are icky, so let’s go back to our mancaves” and mehhhh. And I don’t even want to get into Appalachian stereotypes.
Whatever, look at these vintage toys of the two.

WIP
Punkin’ Puss might want to reconsider calling himself the “boss of these yar hills” from now on. XD
This might be one of my favorite WIPs, aside from the BokuHika ones (which reminds me, I need to get back to that!). For context the female cat is Susie McStomp, a character from the episode “Catch as Cat Can Day” that Vulaan Kulaas suggested I bring in for Redux. She still has her huge crush on Punkin’. And he still has his huge avoidance of her and commitment issues, though that’ll get resolved in the story proper.
I told everyone at work who saw this that this was a country romance, and in a way, I’m not wrong. XD

PUNKIN PUSS, in his nakedness, coming out of some stream in the Ozarks country after finding a few freshwater pearls: It's certainly worth the effort finding such freshwater pearline beauties such as these ... even if it means having to hold your breath quite awhile to achieve the reward! But at least it's better than chasin' after that pesky Mushmouse ...
