Daarvoor moest hij ditmaal voorbij: -- Antonio Esposito (°94; Ita; 21°WRL; hier out in 1/16-fin): die hiza-guruma 3″sec voor tijd moet een hele opluchting geweest zijn, nadat hij na 2′48″min een onterechte 2de-shido voor passivity tegen kreeg...  -- Medickson Del Orbe Cortorreal (°95; Dom; 29°WRL; hier out in 1/8-fin) -- Attila Ungvari (°88; Hun; 7°WRL; hier 7°) -- Sagi Muki (°92; Isr; 16°WRL; hier 5°)

Nu toegegeven, dat is momenteel zeker niet het indrukwekkendste lijstje van toppers: Matthias ontweek namelijk: -- Saeid Mollaei (°92; Aze; 3°WRL; hier out 1/16-fin), -- Guilherme Schimidt (°00; Bra; 4°WRL; hier out 1/16-fin) -- Frank De Wit (°96; Ned; 13°WRL; hier out 1/16-fin) -- Vedat Albayrak (°93; Tur; 8°WRL; hier out 1/8-fin) -- Alpha Oumar Djalo (°96; Fra; 5°WRL; hier out 1/8-fin) -- Takanori Nagase (°93; Jpn; 11°WRL; hier 3°) -- Joonhwan Lee (°02; Kor; 9°WRL; hier 3°) 

Dát zijn momenteel de échte wereldtoppers, en daarvan stond alleen Saeid Mollaei in Matthias’ tabel-helft...  Al de rest stond bij Grigalashvili !! Nu goed, het gros was duidelijk niet op de afspraak, en dat toont en onderstreept inderdaad en effectief de waarde van zo’n 4 opéénvolgende finales, absoluut ! Voorts werd Mollaei’s rol verrassend overgenomen door Sagi Muki, maar waarvan - met alle respect - voor Matthias toch niet meer dezelfde dreiging uitgaat (vroeger wel, maar de Muki van 2022/2023, is niet meer die van 2018/2019, toen hij 7 van hun 8 duels won; en ook Matthias werd sterker natuurlijk).

Tato Grigalashvili (°99; Geo; 1°WRL) op zijn beurt etaleerde: van zijn 5 kampen ging er slechts één in Golden Score: die tegen “landgenoot” Wachid Borchashvili. En stuk voor stuk prachtige scores bovendien, sommige zelfs brilliant.  2x Europees kampioen, 2x wereldkampioen nu, en 15 WTour-medailles; de Georgiër is ook altijd nog maar 23j. Laten we zeggen dat een topper meekan tot zijn +/- 30ste... Dat moet frustrerend in de oren klinken van zijn tegenstanders, en dus ook in die van Matthias. Maar op naar het volgende duel: de Spelen in Parijs !

1. -- Olympisch gouden en zilveren Clarisse Agbegnenou (°92; Fra; 17°WRL;-) is ondertussen mama, en viert dat met... een 6de wereldtitel ! Hallelujah !!

2. -- de 20-jarige en dubbel-wereldkampioene juniors Joanne Van Lieshout (°02; Ned; 21°WRL) wacht een geweldige toekomst: wordt hier knap 3°. 

3. -- Japan voortijdig uitgeschakeld, ook al kwamen ze met z’n tweeën aan de start: zowel uittredend wereldkampioene Megumi Horikawa (°95; Jpn; 3°WRL) als  oudgediende Miku Tashiro/Takaichi sneuvelden in 1/8-finale: Horikawa verrassend tegen Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz (°96; Mex; 23°WRL) en Takaichi tegen Joanna Van Lieshout. Aldus een eerste gewichtscategorie op dit WK zonder Japan in het final block.

Saeid Mollaei was forced by Iranian authorities to lose the world championship semifinals in 2018, in order to avoid a final against an Israeli judoka.

He fled the country and became a Mongolian citizen, and today he wins a silver medal for Mongolia. What a story.

In a wonderful proof that love beats hate, the Iranian judoka who now competes for Mongolia, Saeid Mollaei, dedicated his recent Olympic silver medal to Israel. 

Mollaei was grateful for Israel’s support after the tyrants and bigots in Iranian sports wanted to make him lose so as to avoid facing an Israeli competitor, Sagi Muki. Mollaei refused and now competes for Mongolia. Even better, he is now close friends with Muki.

“Thank you to Israel for the good energy,” he said. “This medal is also dedicated to Israel.”

The Iranian sports authorities are so possessed with hatred for Jews that they would much rather humiliate their own players by wasting years of training, just to avoid any Israelis. 

Nobody needs reminding about Iran’s atrocious human rights record. Recently, yet another Iranian woman, Yasaman Aryani, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for not wearing hijab, a grotesque abuse of women’s rights and civil liberties that would never happen in Israel.  

Who the hell do the Iranian authorities think they are to lecture Israel about human rights abuses? 

The same goes for countries like Algeria, whose sports authorities have joined in with the anti-Semitic peanut gallery, pretending to act from principle when they know full well the gross human rights abuses being perpetrated in many Arab-majority nations today. 

Notice how they will not punish Syrian players for the abuses of Bashar al-Assad, nor Saudi players for the murderous wickedness of Muhammad bin Salman. It’s only Jews who receive this humiliation. 

This reminds me of a quote by former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, who rightly said that when the Arabs loved their children as much as they hated Jews, there would be peace. Though the Iranians are Persian, the same principle applies. 

Saeid Mollaei made a principled stand against this rabid anti-Semitism, and I congratulate him both for this, and his silver medal. Mazal Tov!

An Iranian judoka is refusing to return home over fears for his safety after he ignored orders from his national federation to pull out of fights to avoid a potential final meeting with an Israeli, the International Judo Federation said on Monday.

The IJF said Saeid Mollaei was pressured by Iranian authorities to drop out of his quarterfinal and semifinals at the world judo championships in Tokyo last week to avoid fighting Israel's Sagi Muki in the final.

"I need help. Even if the authorities of my country told me that I can go back without any problems, I am afraid. I am afraid of what might happen to my family and to myself," he said in an IJF statement.

The IJF said Mollaei had been repeatedly ordered to withdraw from fights to avoid the chance of bouts with Israelis, both by the country's National Olympic Committee and the government, and that security personnel had been sent to his home in Iran.

"A few minutes prior to the (quarterfinal) contest, the Iranian coach received a call from his country," the IJF said on its website. "On the other side of the line, the Iranian first deputy minister of sport, Davar Zani, gave him the order to withdraw Mollaei from the competition to avoid a potential contest between Iran and Israel."

The IJF said the president of the Iranian national Olympic Committee then also contacted Mollaei ahead of his semi-final, which the athlete lost, to tell him to pull out.

"Saeid Mollaei is currently under risk and the IJF is looking forward to finding the best solution to allow a champion to continue to do what he does best: to compete no matter what and without any kind of discrimination," the IJF statement said.

The International Olympic Committee said it would look into the matter. "After learning about the case, the IOC has requested a full report from IJF," a brief IOC statement said. "Based on this report we will further evaluate the situation."

Iran's Olympic committee could not be reached for a comment.

Saeid Mollaei, (...) judoka fuggito dall’Iran due anni fa dopo che gli era stato ordinato di perdere in un torneo di Coppa del Mondo per evitare di combattere in finale contro l’israeliano Sagi Muki, martedì  ha conquistato a Tokio l’argento nella finale di judo maschile di 81 kg combattendo per Israele.
