New PAW Patrol Video Game

Outright Games recently announced a new PAW Patrol game! It's called "PAW Patrol World", and unlike previous console games, it'll have a more open world design to it (as in you won't be restricted to levels, but you'll get to explore around and whatnot). Seems pretty interesting so far!

If you're curious, check out the trailer!

It'll be available on PS5/PS4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam/PC. Currently a release date for the UK is September 29, 2023. No word yet (that I know of) for other regions.

some video game movie thoughtsz…. video game movies are interesting since they have that reliable allure for producers (popular pre existing stories and characters that people will watch, thousands of games to choose from).. i just can’t imagine any viddy game movie being good, the way some comic book movies have been. any good game has to allocate story space for the audience to play, to interact with the world and make choices that shape the story. every audience member has a unique experience. i think a good vgame movie would need to rely on the strength of the world and the stories within it rather than the main character. most player characters are so beloved and well established and tied to the players’ unique experience they become untouchable. you can’t change them in any meaningful way so you can’t base a story around them. imo the form of movies has a lot more in common with comic books than video games.. would be surprised if there are any viddy game movies / shows that are more than cash cows.

#i keep coming back to the halo universe #there are a ton of halo stories both fan made and official #the world of halo is great for stories its very evocative #and yet! the tv show starring master chief was a flop #i bet a spin off would do great though #to tell a story with a player character you have to tell THE story. you must capture the experience of the game (impossible) (bad movie)#but whho wants to see a metroid movie without samus.

The Remake/Sequel/Spin-off problem needs to be fixed

Many of us are tired of the remakes/sequels/spin-offs phase. Some of us might even be almost totally averse to them. But, I do want to get this off my chest in a proper blog, because I don’t think a lot of people have talked about how studios can scratch their franchise itch in a proper way. And also in a way that could’ve give them more respect than they get now.

Remake: Stuff That Actually Could've Been Better Or Expanded Upon

There are a lot of movies I’ve seen that have some clear potential underneath that never really got their chance to shine.

Examples being No Hard Feelings, The Boxtrolls, Ralph Breaks the Internet, The Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina. (They need to make another Thumbelina film anyway, it’s already been, what, at least 20 years at this point?) There’s also some anime that I think could use remakes, but Japan mostly keeps their paws off classics.

To explain why, I think these movies all have interesting premises and some kind of hook to them, but the execution turned out to be underwhelming. They're still fairly new, but maybe in another decade or so, they could be considered for a remake. But, really, I wouldn't mind hearing them being remade right now. As for expansion, something I’m thinking about is a TV show called Captain N: The Gamemaster.

I would like to see a remake or at least spin-off of that. It’s an 80s show about a guy who enters into a world of retro-gaming who can control stuff with a belt shaped like a NES controller. It’s been largely forgotten at this point, so bringing it back with newer games juxtaposed in with the retro games will also be a plus. The Great Mouse Detective also could’ve been made into a TV series.

Sequel: Stuff That Actually NEED A Sequel

I think a lot of people want sequels just to see their favorite characters again. But sometimes, that doesn’t always work, I mean look what we recently got.

All because of recent fan demand. The first movie, I believe, felt complete anyway.

There needs to be more sequels to anything that’s either ended on a cliffhanger, or could’ve used an expansion of the world and story.

Monsters vs. Aliens (another Dreamworks film and also highly underrated) ended off on a cliffhanger and could’ve used a sequel (the TV series unfortunately was underwhelming). Go back to the Madeline (Didn’t like the TV show for some reason, though but I did love the live-action one) or Eloise franchise (that had a ton of books that I don’t think got adapted). Bring those to the attention of the modern kids. Maybe go back to the Jumanji franchise WITH THE BOARD GAME and instead of being in a jungle, make it different like Zathura did where they’re like under the sea or in a desert or something.

For the spin-offs, I would kinda repeat the same things I’ve already said. Again, do spin-offs to expand the characters and/or the world. I can’t think of a movie or TV example that would work with this, so I’m just going to use a game example: Catherine.

A lot of the side characters in that one don’t get a lot of character development or depth and some of them had some interesting conflict and backstories that they were going through. I also would like to see the main character interacting with the other characters in more wholesome and complex ways outside of drinking, chatting and having conflict since we barely get any wholesomeness between them in the game. He can help out their problems and grow through each other. It would also show his bar posse as being more of friends than typical long-time acquaintances who just chill out in the bar every day.

I know studios won’t read this, but that’s what I wish would happen, even though a lot of it is most likely a pipe dream. But, you know me, it’s always fun to dream.

Elements the main line Pokémon games can/should take from spin offs

Just my opinion and thoughts

Written before Scarlet and Violet's announcement just didn't fix some grammar and spelling errors lol

Due to their nature as spin-offs they can be looser with the rules of the world or expand on the world while still staying true to Pokémon as outside of maybe a few all Pokémon games can arguably all fit in the same world

And most of them outside of the gameplay offer something that makes them unique

So these are just ideas from each game that can maybe go to the main line games

Pokémon Snap/New Pokémon Snap:

Many of the games try to incorporate some aspect of photo taking such as HGSS with the camera guy that took a pic of you and your current party, Alola’s photo spots, etc

I think incorporating a photo mode in the next Pokémon Amie/Camp/etc. can go a long way for players

And with that, they can incorporate the social media thing they had in New Pokémon Snap into the games as well especially with the Sword and Shield trainer card maker as a basis for posts, sharing, and such

The last thing is Illumina Pokémon

There are aspects of them that feel like they could go more in-depth with this idea and other times it just feels like a different shiny Pokémon, I think there’s something it could be used for maybe like Totem Pokémon and can have slightly higher stats or be used in Contests/etc I think they have nice designs and offer something visually more appealing than totems and alphas while not being almost completely different like shinies

Mystery Dungeon

Pokémon as the playing characters for stuff like the Poke Jobs in SwSh could work

One idea that I’m taking from Chuggaconroy

Essentially saying in Mystery Dungeon pre-evolved Pokémon are still useable the whole game as the evolution stat increase isn’t as big as in the main line games making evolving not as big of a deal as it really just matters what level you are and what moves you have

So having a way, an item, key item, etc that allows a Pokémon to have their evolved stats but keep their pre evolved appearance like Bulbasaur with the stats of Ivysaur or Venusaur. Similar to wearing a skin in video games. That way everyone kind of wins as many prefer their cuter or different stages and only evolved their Pokémon to beat the game. It sounds like such a big thing that it would be a mechanic like Mega evolution. But I think there’s someway that can make it so simple it won’t demand that much attention. As seen with another idea later

The unevolved “skin” can have some downside like Pikachu has Raichu stats except for HP for example kinda like the opposite of Dynamax making it better but not as good as just evolving regularly or like Chugga said it not being able to be used online or in competitive VS

And other things in Mystery dungeon that kind of got stuff in the main lines are based but that’s essentially the starting house or secret bases in the Hoenn games/underground in Sinnoh games having that feature be more permanent/recurring would be nice

Pokémon Unite

Holowear

All those costumes you’ve seen the Pokémon wear are called Holowear as explained in a comic it’s just a hologram projected on the Pokémon so it’s not in the way of movement and battling and weight, etc as it’s not there

Holowear gives the dress-up aspect of Pokémon people love as we have had examples like Cosplay Pikachu and with a lot of other examples like sunglasses Squirtle

Pokémon unite also just falls into the recurring category of having more to do with competitive Pokémon besides Pokémon trainer battles

Pokémon Go

Costumes similar to Holowear as a lot of the event Pokémon had some costumes only available in Pokémon Go that were cute or at least nice to have

Overworld, stuff like pokestops to get small rewards can be nice, and also stuff like confetti falling on Pokémon day is nice

Pokken Tournament

Shadow Pokémon, can also fall in the Pokémon Go and Colosseum/XD, I think outside of story reasons having corrupted Pokémon to purify can give a modern Legends Arceus alpha and noble Pokémon approach with a Shadow Mewtwo/Lugia as the last boss

Another shake-up of how to be competitive with Pokémon

Pokémon Café Remix

Another costume one but on a lesser scale as they’re like Pokémon Go’s

Cafe in the Pokémon games for Pokémon to get benefits for the Pokémon as most are just there for decoration and in SwSh can get some of the treats

Also can be a side job in some games you keep coming back to a place and it gets better/bigger the more you do it, like park avenue but on a café scale

Magikarp Jump

Patterns

Magikarp had so many different patterns and it makes sense as especially in the anime we see Pokémon with slight differences so stuff like that gives some more uniqueness to each Pokémon but is also limited so it won’t be a Spinda situation

Pokémon Masters Ex

Another one that can fall into more ways to be competitive with Pokémon and can also be a unique redux on triple battles and costumes but on the character

Past characters appearing, characters like Red, Rosa, etc having more character and speaking, etc is great and also makes me want them to be in more games as nice appearances kinda like in Sun and Moon with Cynthia Wally Red, etc but don’t always have to relegate to postgame or super bosses as having them on the story is nice

Sync moves and Unity attacks, very much like Z moves but for everyone can be a way to not make them Alola exclusives

Pokémon Ranger

Alternate ways to catch Pokemon, don’t have to be exactly like Ranger but I think getting them can be more story-driven ways that do not gift Pokemon just because plus they are optional

500 years later, some kid goes down to Giant Chasm, finds him bound with the Red Chain and completely ignores the ancient inscription to not free him under any circumstances bc "no pokemon deserves this! ppl are probably just ignorant. 😢" predictably, he begins causing chaos almost immediately after release and now the kid has to go back to the Professor who's like "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU UNLEASHED THE ANCIENT EVIL??"

"don't worry I can fix this"

"HOW?? YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE A POKEMON!!"

"don't you have a few just lying around?"

and so the adventure begins and Arceus comes down at some point like "yeah, you really need to get a handle on this before he devours the gods and ushers in Armageddon." which would be easier if you didn't have to deal with the cult. not Team Plasma or Neo Plasma, but a secret third thing (Cult of the Immortal Dragon who worship Ghetsis as a god which isn't exactly misguided bc he is technically a god in this form). good luck.

So despite being behind on my novella editings

and not having finished the 3 other fan fics I've started

nor the weird podcast haunting fanfic I've got in my head

Nor started on the Ripper fanfic (but let's be real that'll take some time)

But now my brain is 100% focused on a fanfic of a sequel to Alice in Borderland but setting it in NYC -- because I know NYC I don't know Tokyo.

So like right now I'm coming up with 52 games

But maybe if I start posting it I'll get it sorted better in my head

About Gio in masters, I found another rather dubious line in one of his pokemon center conversations: "if you want to protect your dear pokemon, you'll need to be strong. No matter what that takes" . Why do I have a strong impression that he's projecting here?. Maybe it implies that he originally started Team Rocket to get strong enough to also protect his kid but power ended going over his head.

I nearly took a screenshot to answer this since that's what I'm used to doing with replies help

But ooooooooh yeah, I feel like in conjunction with the dialogue I posted there's some heavy implications there. I initially took it way more literally/at face value more bc depending on where he was in his life, it could EASILY be about a pokemon he lost.

But you raise an excellent point, he has a son (i somehow always forget this about him and silver lmao) and that's also pretty realistic that his son - or possibly even his wife/the woman he loved - needed that strength, needed that protection, and somewhere he failed, or came damn close to it. And thus turned to forming Team Rocket.

Given Silver's mom is entirely out of the picture it wouldn't surprise me if it were that something happened to her. Silver.... Has Issues, but they feel more like issues picked up from having Rocket Boss Giovanni as a dad, given his similar fixation of needing to be Strong, and using living things (his pokemon) as a means to an end, in the way Giovanni capitalizes on Team Rocket Grunts' weaknesses to achieve his personal goals.

There's so much to think about with PokeMas Giovanni, it's such a refreshing change from his distant Evil portrayals in other series. Makes him feel human but not even necessarily in some oversympathizing woobifying way, since he clearly speaks from some sort of bad experience but seems. Pretty accepting of his current direction in life.

I'll probably post the dialogue you're referencing here once I find it if only for my own archives, and this rate I'm starting to wonder if, using his son's age and what we know about the timeline of team rocket, I could work backwards to sort out how long he has 'turned to evil to survive' bc I feel like that'd be a telling aspect as well....
