Izzy the Hierophant: The Major Arcana that reminds us to get back to work
As a tarot student, I am fascinated by the interpretations made by fellow tarot enthusiasts in the Our Flag Means Death (OFMD) fandom, on which Major Arcana card best represents Izzy Hands. Popular fanmade decks such as The Cat Bandit Tarot by artist Jennie Planet see him as The Devil—a force that keeps the lovers apart—and Judgement—beating Ed down when he was already at his worst. Valid as they are, these interpretations see Izzy as a negative influence, but I like to offer an alternative take.
I see Izzy’s energy and role in the canon (and eventually, in my personal life as the viewer) as the Hierophant. An energy often found uninspiring, but when used correctly, it can help people make their dreams come true.
Tumblr media
In her book The Holistic Tarot (2015, North Atlantic Books), tarot master Benebell Wen uses Tradition, Conventionalism, and Institutionalism as the keywords that explain the Hierophant card.
“The Hierophant is a holy man, an important figure in his society … People rely on him to be a channel between heaven and earth. In a reading, the card typically indicates a desire to follow conventions and norms, a traditionalist—one who holds traditional values,” she writes.
The Hierophant is often seen as the card that calls for querents to be conservative. Instead of thinking outside the box, it expects them to open the manuals and follow the instructions. When discussing making our dreams come true, the Hierophant energy is often seen as an obstacle—curbing creativity and exploration in favour of traditions.
We did see these traits displayed by Izzy in various scenes, such as in Episode 4 when he demanded Ed to come up with a defensive plan after they noticed a Spanish ship coming their way or when he threatened to blackmail Lucius for … you know what he did.
While these scenes might cement Izzy’s role in the story as the Bad Guy, his role is also a reminder of the importance of maintaining a structure—even on a pirate ship. Because this structure, no matter how dull it is, enables us to function and create the impact we want in our personal and professional lives.
The Hierophant energy
The Hierophant card is known for having a restrictive–perhaps even oppressive–energy. In my early days as a tarot student, I tended to roll my eyes whenever it showed up. It was not the kind of nuance I wanted as a young person. But eventually, I learned how the Hierophant energy could positively impact one’s life when used wisely. Instead of preventing progress, it can help with it.
As someone who works in the tech startup community, I regularly meet people driven to succeed. Buzzwords such as “innovation” and “disruption” are being thrown around lightly; everybody wants to be the next big thing that changes the world. Big ideas, even the most unrealistic ones, are cherished and encouraged.
But people are being brought back to Earth rather quickly in this industry. There are even statistics to prove it: Up to 95 per cent of startups fail simply because they cannot find product-market fit, according to various sources. In layman’s terms, they create products and services that nobody needs. This is why startups are commonly advised to implement rigorous market research and product testing to prove that their ideas work; to have the discipline to do more than just talk.
On an individual level, the Hierophant energy is one I tap into to achieve my goals. To be productive, I need to run my days smoothly. This means clearing my housekeeping tasks before leaving home, logging off social media during work hours, and ensuring I eat my vegetables to stay healthy. They are boring AF, but they provide me with a structure to keep the machine well-oiled.
When I look back on my life, all the times I managed to achieve and create something good for myself (and hopefully others) are when I stopped daydreaming and started implementing the Hierophant energy into my daily life. While it is important to explore new ideas, all of them will be pointless without the structure that ensures it is being developed properly.
Now, back to Izzy
One might see Izzy as a traditional pirate who is resistant to change. I mean, what the fuck is even a retirement? It does not exist in this line of work.
This context places Izzy as a counter to Stede Bonnet’s “fresh, groundbreaking” ideas about piracy. It is easy to see Izzy and his beliefs as outdated and needing disruption. But we must remember that piracy is a dangerous business. While pirates generally entered the business with a ready-to-die mindset, a structure that allows the crew to be functional and prepared to handle risks should be appreciated instead of being seen as a threat.
This is especially more relevant in a situation where a leader struggles to function properly. Ed is a smart and gifted captain, but his short attention span and mood swings have made it hard for him to function on some days and for the crew to maintain their trust in him. His wit may have allowed them to survive another day, but will it be sustainable without a system to ensure that? What happens when he is having his moment? At the very least, they would need a plan.
This is a calling for us to look into our own lives and see: In which area do we need a first mate to yell and remind us to focus?

We’ll Be Right Back AU
Five dimensionally displaced children: a witch-in-training, a Wisconsin runaway, and three close friends, all stuck in a world not their own and searching for a way back.
Three unusual online “shows,” altogether revealing to Earth the shocking existence of otherworldly adventures with actual magic, talking frogs, and infinite trains.
One cosmic storyteller, both watching its newest audience melt down from such earthshaking revelations, and recording the currently unfolding stories of its unwitting protagonists.
In other words, welcome one and all to an absolutely buck wild crossover between Amphibia, Infinity Train, and The Owl House (plus a little Gravity Falls for bonus flavor)!
Tumblr media
Part canon divergence, part fusion worldbuilding project, and 100% the unholy love child of The Truman Show and a react fic, the We’ll Be Right Back AU runs on the fun little idea that during Luz, Anne, and Tulip’s isekai adventures, their shenanigans got being transmitted back home for all of Earth to react and adapt to - and with all chaotic ripple effects on canon and society alike that implies!
After all, this AU isn’t only about the isekai protagonist trio returning to a world vastly different from the one they last remembered (especially with the whole startup religion about them and whatnot for example) and how that affects canon going forwards. Rather, it is also about exploring the various perspectives and worldbuilding shifts caused by these mysterious transmissions, and I would like to extend an open invitation for anyone interested in exploring these depths as well!
To put a fraction of this whole AU into perspective, just consider how WE the IRL fandoms know that these series are just cartoons with fictional characters and fantastical made-up scenarios that don’t exist in real life. WE are comfortably safe to hold the assumption that everything will work out by the end by virtue of plot armor and narrative conventions dictating so.
But for Earth here in the We’ll Be Right Back AU, they don’t have ANY of that to fall back on.
Actual goddamn magic, the confirmation of the multiverse, multiple sapient alien species, the probable answer to so, so many missing persons cases with the train, and etc. Just one of these fictional concepts being made true and known to the entire world would be enough to throw humanity into mass chaos, and yet Earth has to contend with ALL of them becoming undeniable facts about the reality they have to live with.
Oh, and fun fact: because these transmissions are edited recordings of true events as well as how in-show timelines don’t necessarily line up with IRL airing schedules, the people of Earth get to see actual children be in real near-death situations - and in effectively real time at that!
Now consider just how existentially unnerving it would be to watch the struggles of said kids be reduced into literal entertainment -their tribulations repackaged as ‘television shows’ with ‘overarching plots- for Earth to “enjoy.” Almost as if they were characters unknowingly acting out a play dictated by the mysterious entity/upload account known only as “the Transmitter,” and with no certainty as to whether the kids’ ‘stories’ will actually have a happy ending…
Needless to say, lots of peoples’ sleep schedules get completely screwed after discovering the transmissions for many different reasons both right and wrong lol.
After all, after seeing such an apparent example in Amphibia, Infinity Train, and The Owl House, who wouldn’t be agonizing over asking whether they themselves were also but a plaything dancing to the unknown whims of a higher being with no clear autonomy?
And on the flipside, who wouldn’t look at the society-flipping revelations or narrative framing of the transmissions and come to the conclusion that the Transmitter obviously is a god/like being informing humanity of Anne, Luz, and Tulip’s in progress divine destinies, and that it’s clearly instructing the formation of a religion of them and the trio?
Sure makes one wonder which interpretation is correct, let alone if either of them are correct in the first place, doesn’t it…
Overall, these are but a mere fraction of the sheer amount of possible stories that could be told within the We’ll Be Right Back AU, some of which you can even read over in the original forum thread where me and a couple of other folks put this whole AU together in the first place.
For example, we’ve got a dive into how the lives of some of Anne’s classmates were affected because of the international attention on the Amphibia trio spilling over, what it was like for Tulip to catch up with a familiar face after getting off of the train, a quick look at some of the fun ways pop culture has adjusted after the transmissions, and even how the Transmitter’s presence could completely alter the context of a certain encounter with Emperor Belos.
And if anyone’s interested in taking the plunge and contributing, there no need to worry about contributing fully fledged snippets or necessarily adhering to one particular “canon.” With the sheer scope and the many possible directions the base idea of this AU can take, as well as how the real world and real people are often messy and imperfect, feel free to contribute however you want! From fic drabbles about your own plotline for the AU to literally the laziest and unfunny memes you’re able to whip together in five minutes (no joke, the shittier the better), there will always be a niche anything you come up with can fill out!
Altogether, this is an open invitation to a sandbox I hope you all will enjoy playing in, and feel free to ask me any questions you have and or for prompts on how to start!
Until next time, stay tuned, folks!

ok but like what would goro and akira's warrior cat names be and which clans would they be from
so forgive me. i'm horrible at the whole warrior cats naming conventions lol.
ok HEAR ME OUT!!! i always loved making original clans and worlds and that's so much fun for AUs too. however it's really hard for persona 5 because well. there aren't exactly SIDES in that game or factions of people who battle who can be easily put into diff clans
but we can maybe divide them by school? like RoseClan for shujin (and related adults/parents), and idfk DeftClan for kosei (i'm horrendous at this, help me out) and then a third one for unaffiliated characters
maybe akira has been exiled by an outside cat group somewhere that is far away and doesn't involve itself much with the clans, and is a rogue for a little while before being taken into the shujin clan to show how they can ""rehabilitate"" a rogue/exile.
...maybe his name starts out as Joker, then he gets renamed to idk Blackpaw and then Blackwing, i'm thinking of personas as descriptors hm hm (okay i want Ebonypaw and Ebonywing because that sounds metal as hell, but also we've gone through the ebony dementia darkness raven way thing so many times on the internet here. STILL THO THINK ABOUT IT)
goro would be a DeftClan member who's secretly collaborating with an outside cat group to take down cats for cat shido. his clan name would be maybe Lightbird but the outside group just straight up call him Crow. he's held to a very high standard in his clan and is basically expected to take over as deputy the next time the spot is open despite being too young for it.
and also because you asked ME you get the ryuji brainrot too. Sparkpaw was a startup warrior on the line to be the best hunter before his mentor got replaced by you know who, and we all know basically what happened in p5 canon. because he supposedly attacked his mentor without reason, and was with a broken leg for a long while, he's generally disliked and shunned by the clan. he's mostly lonely except for the medicine cat apprentice that he was usually pushed onto to treat him, Carmenpaw (and later, Carmenfire. Carmen is a color in this case). Her ass does NOT want to be a medicine cat btw. So Ebonywing (or Blackwing maybe I guess), Carmenfire and Sparkchase all become this silly little out of place trio who the clan does not know what to do with lol. thanks for listening

Two MIT teams selected for NSF sustainable materials grants

Two MIT teams selected for NSF sustainable materials grants
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two teams led by MIT researchers were selected in December 2023 by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Convergence Accelerator, a part of the TIP Directorate, to receive awards of $5 million each over three years, to pursue research aimed at helping to bring cutting-edge new sustainable materials and processes from the lab into practical, full-scale industrial production. The selection was made after 16 teams from around the country were chosen last year for one-year grants to develop detailed plans for further research aimed at solving problems of sustainability and scalability for advanced electronic products.
Of the two MIT-led teams chosen for this current round of funding, one team, Topological Electric, is led by Mingda Li, an associate professor in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering. This team will be finding pathways to scale up sustainable topological materials, which have the potential to revolutionize next-generation microelectronics by showing superior electronic performance, such as dissipationless states or high-frequency response. The other team, led by Anuradha Agarwal, a principal research scientist at MIT’s Materials Research Laboratory, will be focusing on developing new materials, devices, and manufacturing processes for microchips that minimize energy consumption using electronic-photonic integration, and that detect and avoid the toxic or scarce materials used in today’s production methods.
Scaling the use of topological materials
Li explains that some materials based on quantum effects have achieved successful transitions from lab curiosities to successful mass production, such as blue-light LEDs, and giant magnetorestance (GMR) devices used for magnetic data storage. But he says there are a variety of equally promising materials that have shown promise but have yet to make it into real-world applications.
“What we really wanted to achieve is to bring newer-generation quantum materials into technology and mass production, for the benefit of broader society,” he says. In particular, he says, “topological materials are really promising to do many different things.”
Topological materials are ones whose electronic properties are fundamentally protected against disturbance. For example, Li points to the fact that just in the last two years, it has been shown that some topological materials are even better electrical conductors than copper, which are typically used for the wires interconnecting electronic components. But unlike the blue-light LEDs or the GMR devices, which have been widely produced and deployed, when it comes to topological materials, “there’s no company, no startup, there’s really no business out there,” adds Tomas Palacios, the Clarence J. Lebel Professor in Electrical Engineering at MIT and co-principal investigator on Li’s team. Part of the reason is that many versions of such materials are studied “with a focus on fundamental exotic physical properties with little or no consideration on the sustainability aspects,” says Liang Fu, an MIT professor of physics and also a co-PI. Their team will be looking for alternative formulations that are more amenable to mass production.
One possible application of these topological materials is for detecting terahertz radiation, explains Keith Nelson, an MIT professor of chemistry and co-PI. This extremely high-frequency electronics can carry far more information than conventional radio or microwaves, but at present there are no mature electronic devices available that are scalable at this frequency range. “There’s a whole range of possibilities for topological materials” that could work at these frequencies, he says. In addition, he says, “we hope to demonstrate an entire prototype system like this in a single, very compact solid-state platform.”
Li says that among the many possible applications of topological devices for microelectronics devices of various kinds, “we don’t know which, exactly, will end up as a product, or will reach real industrial scaleup. That’s why this opportunity from NSF is like a bridge, which is precious, to allow us to dig deeper to unleash the true potential.”
In addition to Li, Palacios, Fu, and Nelson, the Topological Electric team includes Qiong Ma, assistant professor of physics in Boston College; Farnaz Niroui, assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT; Susanne Stemmer, professor of materials at the University of California at Santa Barbara; Judy Cha, professor of materials science and engineering at Cornell University; industrial partners including IBM, Analog Devices, and Raytheon; and professional consultants. “We are taking this opportunity seriously,” Li says. “We really want to see if the topological materials are as good as we show in the lab when being scaled up, and how far we can push to broadly industrialize them.”
Toward sustainable microchip production and use
The microchips behind everything from smartphones to medical imaging are associated with a significant percentage of greenhouse gas emissions today, and every year the world produces more than 50 million metric tons of electronic waste, the equivalent of about 5,000 Eiffel Towers. Further, the data centers necessary for complex computations and huge amount of data transfer — think AI and on-demand video — are growing and will require 10 percent of the world’s electricity by 2030.
“The current microchip manufacturing supply chain, which includes production, distribution, and use, is neither scalable nor sustainable, and cannot continue. We must innovate our way out of this crisis,” says Agarwal.
The name of Agarwal’s team, FUTUR-IC, is a reference to the future of the integrated circuits, or chips, through a global alliance for sustainable microchip manufacturing. Says Agarwal, “We bring together stakeholders from industry, academia, and government to co-optimize across three dimensions: technology, ecology, and workforce. These were identified as key interrelated areas by some 140 stakeholders. With FUTUR-IC we aim to cut waste and CO2-equivalent emissions associated with electronics by 50 percent every 10 years.”
The market for microelectronics in the next decade is predicted to be on the order of a trillion dollars, but most of the manufacturing for the industry occurs only in limited geographical pockets around the world. FUTUR-IC aims to diversify and strengthen the supply chain for manufacturing and packaging of electronics. The alliance has 26 collaborators and is growing. Current external collaborators include the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI), Tyndall National Institute, SEMI, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Intel, and the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Agarwal leads FUTUR-IC in close collaboration with others, including, from MIT, Lionel Kimerling, the Thomas Lord Professor of Materials Science and Engineering; Elsa Olivetti, the Jerry McAfee Professor in Engineering; Randolph Kirchain, principal research scientist in the Materials Research Laboratory; and Greg Norris, director of MIT’s Sustainability and Health Initiative for NetPositive Enterprise (SHINE). All are affiliated with the Materials Research Laboratory. They are joined by Samuel Serna, an MIT visiting professor and assistant professor of physics at Bridgewater State University. Other key personnel include Sajan Saini, education director for the Initiative for Knowledge and Innovation in Manufacturing in MIT’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering; Peter O’Brien, a professor from Tyndall National Institute; and Shekhar Chandrashekhar, CEO of iNEMI.
“We expect the integration of electronics and photonics to revolutionize microchip manufacturing, enhancing efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and paving the way for unprecedented advancements in computing speed and data-processing capabilities,” says Serna, who is the co-lead on the project’s technology “vector.”
Common metrics for these efforts are needed, says Norris, co-lead for the ecology vector, adding, “The microchip industry must have transparent and open Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) models and data, which are being developed by FUTUR-IC.” This is especially important given that microelectronics production transcends industries. “Given the scale and scope of microelectronics, it is critical for the industry to lead in the transition to sustainable manufacture and use,” says Kirchain, another co-lead and the co-director of the Concrete Sustainability Hub at MIT. To bring about this cross-fertilization, co-lead Olivetti, also co-director of the MIT Climate and Sustainability Consortium (MCSC), will collaborate with FUTUR-IC to enhance the benefits from microchip recycling, leveraging the learning across industries.
Saini, the co-lead for the workforce vector, stresses the need for agility. “With a workforce that adapts to a practice of continuous upskilling, we can help increase the robustness of the chip-manufacturing supply chain, and validate a new design for a sustainability curriculum,” he says.
“We have become accustomed to the benefits forged by the exponential growth of microelectronic technology performance and market size,” says Kimerling, who is also director of MIT’s Materials Research Laboratory and co-director of the MIT Microphotonics Center. “The ecological impact of this growth in terms of materials use, energy consumption and end-of-life disposal has begun to push back against this progress. We believe that concurrently engineered solutions for these three dimensions will build a common learning curve to power the next 40 years of progress in the semiconductor industry.”
The MIT teams are two of six that received awards addressing sustainable materials for global challenges through phase two of the NSF Convergence Accelerator program. Launched in 2019, the program targets solutions to especially compelling challenges at an accelerated pace by incorporating a multidisciplinary research approach.

runes story infodumping while i eat lunch :3 this ended up being a bit long so i’ll put this under a read more LOL
AtroCorp Biotechnologies is part medical company, part wildlife research startup. founded by Dr. Cassius Castellanos, the company's spent over 50 years finding ways to help humans by learning how animals have evolved to survive and incorporating it into their medical technology. Dr. Castellanos unfortunately passed away about a year ago, leaving his son, Corvus, to take up the reins.
during this year's international villains' convention, AtroCorp announced a partnership with Pave Nature, Inc. to build several new branches of its company. alongside that, both companies revealed a fantastic new technology AtroCorp had unearthed: Creature Power Runes. AtroCorp itself had been researching them for years beforehand, but they'd recently discovered the existence of several more beyond the few they already had.
Paisley, being this year's convention spokeswoman, introduced the Hunt — an international race among the villains to locate the remaining Runes. Whoever got their hands on one was free to use them however they wanted (they sell for incredibly high prices!). This obviously got the attention of Donita, Gourmand, and Zach, each for their own reasons.
Donita found that the Runes could be used for her new jewelry line, and the animalistic features that contact with one of them tended to create was the perfect way to accessorize her work. Gourmand believed the Runes could be refined into exquisite spices that he could sell at the next location he opens.
And Zach -- ever the robotic genius -- knew he could use the Runes to power his animal-based technology, should he find a way to tap into their full power. Plus, they were a hell of a lot easier to wrangle than live creatures.
Meanwhile, the Tortuga Crew (none the wiser to the Hunt that had been announced just a month or so before) have been doing their own research into the three Runes Aviva had found prior to putting the team together. At the time things kick off, the crew is in possession of the Arctic Wolf, Peregrine Falcon, and Cheetah Runes.
The crew gets roped into everything when Zach attempts to steal the Runes from them; Martin and Chris learn about the Hunt after stumbling upon Zach’s plans on his ship. The crew realizes. Hm! This could get ugly if the Runes end up in the wrong hands. And so they make it their goal to get their hands on whatever Runes they can before the villains do.
A majority of the story follows the crew as they travel around the world and do their thing (kinda similar to what we see in the canon show, except there’s that overarching plot of piecing together what’s happening in the background). Alongside doing their field work, Chris and Koki are working together to discover the origin of the Runes, although much of their research has turned up very little. The two of them have at least narrowed down their search to somewhere in the Western Hemisphere, but the exact location is still unknown.
Coincidentally, much of their progress comes from their run-ins with Pave Nature and AtroCorp. After discovering multiple excavation sites around the world, the crew learned that the two companies are looking for the same thing they are. (Also coincidentally, Aviva seems particularly uncomfortable every time the crew encounters AtroCorp...)
So far, Martin and Chris are the only ones who can use a Creature Power Suit. Aviva’s inventions are mostly compatible with the Runes, although there’s still a lot of malfunctions she needs to fix. The more the bros test em out, the better of an understanding she has of how Rune technology works. This actually ends up becoming the basis of the Creature Power Disks later :]

A beauty pageant that gave itself a feminist makeover two years ago now has two bio male competing. Most of the contestants gave statements about the role of women in German society. Care to guess which two made statements focusing just on themselves?
Tumblr media
Two of the top 20 candidates set to compete in the Miss Germany semi-finals are biological men who identify as “women.”
Miss Germany is the country’s national pageant, which has been held annually since 1927. While it was traditionally a conventional beauty pageant, the competition was revamped a two years ago to shift focusfrom women’s appearance to their characters and achievements.
In the FAQ, the Miss Germany official website asserts that it considers itself a “feminist” competition, and that it strongly supports social justice-related movements.
“The work of Miss Germany Studios is based on critical analyses of gender, equality and self-determination. We actively fight sexism and support the mission of all women and marginalized groups,” it reads in response to the question “are we feminists?”
Under the new pageant spirit, Miss Germany states its goal is to “empower authentic women.”
But earlier this month, Miss Germany announced the top 20 candidates who will be moving on to the semi-finals to be held at the beginning of February.
Of them, two are male.
Laurén Kaczmarczyk, 22, and Saskia von Bargen, 18, have advanced into the semi-finals of the national pageant, both of whom are representing the state of Lower Saxony.
The Top 20 candidates are all profiled on the official Miss Germany site and Instagram, which advertises that “the title [of] MISS GERMANY is an award for future makers, dreamers and visionaries.” Among the female candidates, whose “missions” can all be read alongside their portraits, are Kaczmarczyk and von Bargen.
Kaczmarczyk has had multiple posts dedicated to profiling him on the Miss Germany Instagram, one of which prominently features a photo of the progress pride flag.
Tumblr media
“I stand primarily as a woman in this contest who is tired of being categorized as a marginalized minority and reduced to their gender,” Kaczmarczyk says. “Once people experience my trans-identity, they focus on that aspect and see me as ‘special’ which empowers them to ask us trans people inappropriate intimate and personal questions.”
Tumblr media
Despite identifying himself as transgender repeatedly, Kaczmarczyk has said that his mission for participating in Miss Germany is because “I want to be considered as a woman and not a trans woman.”
Another trans-identified male contestant selected for the semi-finals is Saskia von Bargen, who has ostensibly been transitioning since a young age. Von Bergen writes that he believes “non-biological women are women” in his Miss Germany mission statement.
“I’m Saskia, [I am] 18 years old and trans woman. First and foremost, I want to show people, especially trans people, that a non-biological woman is also a woman. A woman does not identify herself by gender or appearance, be it feminine or masculine. Every woman and every man should feel comfortable in his body and if that is not the case: have no inhibitions or fears! There should be no consideration for how other people take it, because only you should feel comfortable and happy.”
In contrast, the female contestants in the pageant have shared vastly different mission statements.
Vanessa Didam, a 30-year-old chimney sweep, stated her goal for participating in Miss Germany was to strengthen the role of women in society and the workforce. She shares that upon beginning her career, she “quickly noticed how much headwind, prejudices and seemingly insurmountable obstacles one encounters as a woman in a male-dominated working world and in society.”
Tumblr media
Another candidate, Tania Moser, said her goal was to encourage women to demand better conditions in all areas of life. Moser, a CEO of a pet supply startup, is also a new mother.
“I became a mother in January [of 2022] and I have NOT given up my career,” she says. “We’re a lot further along today than we were a generation ago, but unfortunately there’s still inequality. WE [women] have to demand more: from employers, our families, our partners, politicians and, last but not least, society.”
The participation of two men in the Miss Germany pageant is just the latest instance in the recent trend of the inclusion of men in women’s competitions, sports, and award ceremonies.
In December, a professional gamer Alessandro Ribeiro was awarded a top female gamer award by League of Legends Sports Brazil despite being a biological male. Soon after, Ribeiro stepped down from his esports association following allegations that he had been sexually predatory towards a minor.
The BBC was also under fire last month after honoring two trans-identified males on their list of 2022’s most “inspiring and influential women.” One of the selectees, Erika Hilton, is a transgender politician in Brazil currently seeking to have a women’s rights advocate imprisoned for misgendering him.
In November, trans-identified male Brian Nguyen made international headlines after being awarded the crown in the Miss Greater Derry pageant in New Hampshire. The competition was a locally-run event under the national Miss America series of pageants. In addition to winning the crown, Nguyen received the Miss Greater Derry Scholarship, a financial award established to support young women in their academic careers.
The month prior, Thai transgender beauty mogul Jakapong “Anne” Jakrajutatip purchased the Miss Universe competition for $20 million. In the announcement, made by Jakrajutatip’s company, JKN Global Group, it was claimed the move marked the first time the historic pageant was “owned by a woman.”

In 2022, I attended my first SXSW, and I couldn’t escape the suffocating atmosphere of crypto evangelism. A convention that touts itself as the nexus of art and technology, it seemed fertile ground for the seemingly growing NFT community. This year? I could barely find a mention of crypto. And the few who did bring it up seemed embarrassed to do so.
That strategy of non-acknowledgment might just be the future of crypto.
For the uninitiated, SXSW is an event that takes over nearly the whole city of Austin. There’s the main convention center, panels at different hotels, and concerts at the biggest stadiums. But almost every bar, club, and venue also has some tie-in party or concert. And those that don’t host official SXSW events hold unofficial ones to at least catch some of the hype.
All of that is to say, if you want to set up shop during SXSW, you can probably find a place to do so. This is what made it so bizarre that I was able to go most of the week with scarcely a hint of words like crypto, blockchain, or NFT.
In 2022, crypto blew the doors off the entire city. An outdoor venue with giant domes housed bombastic raves celebrating some little-known bunny NFTs called Flufs. (Incidentally, I attended the event last year, and the 3D images of crudely rendered rotting rabbits still occasionally haunt me.)
Blockchain Creative Labs—a division of Fox Entertainment—was a key sponsor of SXSW 2022. In 2023, BCL was nowhere to be found. Last year, there were dozens of panels advocating crypto’s benefits. This year, the word “crypto” only appears a dozen times in the SXSW event schedule. (Both “AI” and “metaverse” clocked at least 30 mentions.) Four of those were showings of a documentary about (among other things) “WallStreetBets and crypto fanatics,” and one was a panel with prominent crypto skeptic Molly White.
The minimal crypto presence at SXSW isn’t terribly surprising. Despite claims to the contrary, NFTs don’t actually work the way a lot of their advocates say they do. Many artists have rejected NFTs entirely and find them to be an external headache, rather than a useful business tool.
It’s not the first time tech has promised to revolutionize an industry only to fundamentally misunderstand the field it’s entering. (Just ask Stadia how easy it is to build a gaming platform.) But what’s notable is that crypto didn’t abandon SXSW entirely.
Instead, it simply came in disguise.
On the expo floor, I saw a few companies that were still proud to admit they used crypto tech to insert a financial layer into an otherwise existing product. I saw a blockchain-based camera and a crypto streaming platform—both with names I’d never heard of—in tiny booths. The largest booth that prominently announced its crypto affiliation was Polkadot, a startup that “unites and secures a growing ecosystem of specialized blockchains called parachains.”
For every one of these companies, however, I saw just as many (if not more) that employed crypto while trying very hard to avoid mentioning that fact. Two companies claimed to be building the future of social media. Dig deep enough into their websites and they both offered users crypto-based incentives, but neither chose to feature crypto or blockchain tech as a selling point.
One of them, Ascend, had flyers all over the city. These made lofty—arguably impossible—promises, such as “no misinformation” (who defines what counts as misinformation?). Some of these promises were fundamentally contradictory, such as “no toxicity” and “no hate speech” but also “no centralized censorship.” It’s unclear how the company expects to reconcile many of these competing priorities, but according to its site the solution somehow involves earning “Ascend credits,” which are only described as crypto in a chart.
Another company, Arkive, launched a DAO in 2022 aimed at creating a community of members that would use NFTs and the blockchain to form a museum curated by the internet, rather than a central organization. The group met at SXSW 2023 and even put on a panel about the decentralization of art, but they downplayed the DAO and the crypto angle. Even Arkive’s own coverage of its SXSW 2023 presence barely mentions crypto.
In some cases, it’s unclear whether companies have abandoned their crypto plans or would simply prefer not to highlight them. Even expo booths for companies that are widely known for their work in crypto seemed hesitant to use any of the keywords closely associated with it. A display for The Sandbox—sharing a small booth with some other developers in the space—proudly touted the “metaverse” game and occasionally mentioned being a “Web3” platform. But the fact that much of the game is built around NFTs on the blockchain was somewhat obscured.
It’s a dynamic I started to internally refer to as crypto-obfuscation. It’s not that any of these companies would refuse to acknowledge crypto, per se. When asked, many were all too happy to discuss their vision of a blockchain-based future. But they seemed to operate as though calling attention to it unprovoked was, at best, a little uncouth. At worst? An active deterrent.
Crypto has often been compared to the early internet, where the tech is exciting but not ready for normies yet. Still, no matter how cringey the internet was in its youth, there was never a time when companies avoided saying they were building a product on “the web” or “online.”
I’ll openly admit that I was deeply skeptical of crypto, even in 2022. There was already enough evidence of scams, rugpulls, disinformation, and fraud to make anyone wary of the blockchain for the next decade at least. But I felt compelled to keep my opinions a little quiet. At one crypto-themed party that year, a friend shouted quite loudly, “NFTs SUCK!!” And while I aspire to her energy, I also lightly shushed her for fear someone would take offense.
This year, I felt like my skepticism had become the norm, or at least mainstream enough to express openly. Out of nearly everyone I spoke to, the few with any opinions about crypto seemed eager to share their doubts. Most simply hadn’t thought about the technology. And besides, generative AI was much more interesting to discuss.
I doubt any of this means crypto is dead or dying. The tech has been around in some form or another for over a decade, and public interest in it comes in waves. However, its subdued presence at SXSW suggests its advocates had learned a powerful lesson from the previous year: The best way to evangelize crypto outside the tech bubble is to hope you can convince people to pay no attention to the blockchain behind the curtain.

New study on improving MRI image quality based on deep learning technology
Tumblr media
New study on improving MRI image quality based on deep learning technology published in European Radiology. SwiftMR™, an AI-powered MRI reconstruction solution from AIRS Medical proved its performance for enhancing the image quality of 3D high-resolution MRI. SEOUL, South Korea, Nov. 25, 2022 - A recent study published in European Radiology demonstrated that SwiftMR, an AI-powered MRI reconstruction solution from AIRS Medical, successfully denoises 3D MR images and improves its image quality by using routine clinical scans only. The study aimed to develop a deep neural network (DNN)–based noise reduction and image quality improvement by only using routine clinical scans and evaluating its performance in 3D high-resolution MRI. The study was conducted by AIRS Medical and Dr. Jinhee Jang, MD, Ph.D. of Seoul St. Mary's Hospital. The retrospective study included T1-weighted magnetization-prepared rapid gradient-echo (MP-RAGE) images from 185 clinical scans. Qualitative evaluation between conventional MP-RAGE and DNN-based MP-RAGE was performed by two radiologists in image quality, fine structure delineation, and lesion conspicuity. Quantitative evaluation was performed with full sampled data as a reference by measuring quantitative error metrics and volumetry at seven different simulated noise levels. DNN application on VWI was evaluated by two radiologists in image quality. The study shows that DNN-based MP-RAGE outperformed conventional MP-RAGE in all image quality parameters (average scores = 3.7 vs. 4.9, p < 0.001). In the quantitative evaluation, DNN showed better error metrics (p < 0.001) and comparable (p > 0.09) or better (p < 0.02) volumetry results than conventional MP-RAGE. DNN application to VWI also revealed improved image quality (3.5 vs. 4.6, p < 0.001). "We are very pleased that we have proved SwiftMR™ contributes to not only reducing time but also helps make images good to great, eventually contribute radiologists could read images with confidence." remarked Hyeseong Lee, MD, CEO of AIRS Medical. "We are expecting more adaptions and collaborations with radiologists around the world thus we could grow together." AIRS Medical recently announced its participation in the 108th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meetings of the RSNA 2022, held from November 27 to 30th in Chicago. During the event, AIRS Medical showcases its award-winning MRI reconstruction solution SwiftMR™and also delivering two oral presentations at scientific session. "We are proud of ourselves since it is quite unusual for a startup to deliver oral presentations at RSNA scientific session. Being adopted as oral presentation means recognition of academically important achievements." he added Read the full article

How Organizations Are Unlocking Their Talent With High Potential Programs
Until recently, identifying High Potential Employees (HIPOs) was a matter of managerial intuition. Today more organizations are realizing these old-fashioned approaches are subjective, disregarding the rich diversity of potential, which is often hidden. In this blog we look at real-world examples of how organizations have maximized the potential of their talent.
Taking a Scientific Approach to Address Organizational Challenges
From my experience helping many organizations with their talent needs, I have seen three key reasons why high potential (HIPO) programs work: leadership development, succession planning, and for addressing the challenges of external hiring.
A growing number of organizations are searching for scientifically proven methodologies that will enhance their efforts to develop and retain one of their most valuable assets—their high potential employees. In the last year I have collaborated with numerous organizations that were looking to implement a more structured approach for their HIPO identification programs. At the core of this need was a way to validate and enhance any HIPO related decision.
It is worth noting that these organizations came from diverse industries, showing the competition for talent and struggle to retain employees is a common concern for business leaders. Below are examples of how three different industries have benefitted from a HIPO program.
Telecommunications
Within the telecommunications industry, innovation is a top priority. Working with a leading telecom provider, we achieved a seismic shift in how potential was identified, moving away from the traditional performance rating approach to a holistic solution of identifying hidden talent and potential of their people. As these individuals faced real-world business challenges, their latent potential could be channeled into tangible outcomes, driving the company's competitive edge in a saturated market.
Financial Services
In financial services, risk management is as much about human capital as it is about financial assets. Through our collaboration with such an organization, doors were opened for individuals whose potential may have been obscured by conventional evaluations. These high potentials, once identified, were instrumental in navigating the complex regulatory landscapes and digital transformations reshaping the industry.
Insurance
For an organization in the insurance sector, often perceived as conservative, we introduced a new innovative HiPo identification program. Here, the focus was on strategic foresight and adaptability—qualities essential for an industry grappling with the implications of climate change and technological disruption.
A Future-Ready Workforce: From Potential To Performance
Across these experiences, a common thread emerged: the willingness to invest in HIPOs is a willingness to invest in the future. By identifying potential based on objective criteria and contextual performance, these industries are creating a more dynamic, agile workforce prepared for unexpected market twists.
The drive to objectively identify HIPOs derives from the need to build a solid leadership pipeline for the future. Organizations are prioritizing internal talent development to combat the unpredictability of external hiring and to create a workforce ready for strategic pivots. Talent mobility is not just about filling positions; it is about seizing opportunities, overcoming challenges, and ensuring that every shift in the market is met with preparedness and skill.
As I share these insights, I hope they resonate with you, whether you are at the helm of a startup or steering a multinational corporation. As the journey of HIPO identification and development is ongoing, the least we can do is to create a fair and objective approach that gives the right opportunities to people to project their talents.
Learn more about how SHL can help with your high potentials program with a data-driven and objective way to discover, utilize, and retain your most critical talent.

Final Pitching Experience & The Entrepreneurial Mind Journey
Proposing a start-up, a reverse vending machine, was an exciting venture that combines creativity and sustainability as we embark on our journey on this subject. The blog contains the journey, starting with interviewing people about the difficulty or issue they're facing or experiencing around campus, the first basic task that my team had to complete on our journey. To a detailed pitch, emphasizing the difficulties and learnings we encountered along the way.
Tumblr media
As we already received their responses, each of them brought different unique perspectives. Our team brainstormed their answers to think of what start-up we could propose. The interviewees' answers served as our compass that guided us toward our proposed start-up, the reverse vending machine. When it comes to group projects, decision-making is essential to determining how a team will proceed. The interview's outcome was thoroughly discussed by the team. After navigating the challenges of decision-making, the group did come up with what we’re working on during our final term. That’s how we came up with our start-up, a reverse vending machine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The concept of our reverse vending machine is to address how we can make recycling more efficient and accessible for everyone. The Eco Bro team did a lot of research to understand how reverse vending machines work. The team did research on the machine’s design, features, and the different models already in use around the world for us to compare and make our reverse vending machine have its own unique feature. In building our prototype with the features we have mentioned, During the process of making prototypes, it‘s quite challenging. We had sleepless nights and worries about whether our prototype would work just like we wanted it to. We made our prototype out of scratch; no programming or wiring happened—just our own DIY reverse vending machine. Through the team’s hard work and teamwork, we managed to make our own DIY reverse vending machine. And it's a success. In our final pitch, presenting our project to the new sets of panelists was the most crucial moment, as it was the last step of our journey. During the final pitch, it’s not just about presenting the project; it's also about being able to effectively communicate its value proposition. like highlighting the benefits and pros of our project. It is also involved in preparing to address any potential concerns and objections about the project. And lastly, to be able to show the panelists our prototype and how it works. After presenting it, we got good feedback, and we got compliments on our presentation. And that’s a success.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, of course, there’s no journey without challenges; everything has its ups and downs. During the interview, some felt intimidated. In brainstorming the ideas, each of us has a different perspective, and there's a communication barrier. During the first proposal, our first idea was rejected, so we need to come up with other solutions. In midterm pitching, the feedback of the panelists is not that good; there are a lot of changes we made. They want money, but we want sustainability. During the customer validation, different feedback was gathered, both positive and negative. We didn't let those challenges bring us down, so instead, we made it our lesson to do more and to give our best. And that’s what we did.
Lecture Series
Tumblr media
During the lecture series, I'd be honest, I really didn't get to understand everything in our seats. The University Convention Center was full of students, and we didn't have the chance to sit in our designated seats. However, I can say that the lecture was indeed informative and indeed gave us insights about the business world. What caught my attention was when the speaker discussed the dynamic of the start-up. It was mentioned that startups, which convert creative ideas into workable solutions, are becoming more and more significant to the world economy.
Tumblr media
The speaker also discussed personal examples that demonstrate how entrepreneurs seize chances and overcome obstacles. Learn how entrepreneurs use copyrights, trademarks, and patents to safeguard their innovations. I was unable to hear the majority of what the speaker was saying when they discussed copyright legislation during the lecture.
Tumblr media
If we're talking about experience, ever since I was in elementary school, we owned a grocery store. During the lecture series, I also learned that a grocery store is not a start-up. It's funny, yes. A start-up is a newly established business venture that is in the early stages of its development. In summary, a start-up is an enterprise that aims to achieve large growth and market influence by leveraging innovation, scaling rapidly, and managing substantial risks. It goes beyond simply being a new business.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was fun. 😊
Thank you, Sir.

Ingenuity and Excellence for a Health-Conscious World: Highlights from Expo West 2024
The recent Natural Products Expo West at California's Anaheim Convention Center radiated with ingenuity, excellence, and optimism, enlightening consumers on the possibilities of a new and improved health-conscious world. From March 12 to March 16, pioneers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts were drawn together from around the globe. This annual extravaganza, renowned as the world's largest natural, organic, and healthy products event, showcased the latest advancements, trends, and breakthroughs shaping the future of conscious consumerism. It also had beloved legacy brands.
Once a gathering of "hippie brands" promoting health and sustainability, the Natural Products Expo has undergone a remarkable evolution mirroring the transformation of natural foods in American culture. In its early days, the Expo was a vibrant tapestry of grassroots entrepreneurs, offering products that were often seen as niche or alternative. These brands gained traction as mainstream America began to embrace health-conscious living, propelling them into unprecedented success. As natural and organic lifestyles gained momentum, these once niche products became increasingly popular, leading to a wave of acquisitions by major corporations eager to tap into the burgeoning market. The success stories of these pioneering brands, born from countercultural movements, captivated not only consumers but also investors and industry giants. Over time, the landscape of the Natural Products Expo has shifted dramatically. What was once a gathering of idealistic visionaries has become a magnet for investors, bankers, and corporate interests. The show transformed into a sleek and sophisticated affair, attracting not only those invested in the ethos of natural living but also the allure of financial opportunity.
As attendees streamed into the vibrant halls of the convention center, they embarked on a journey that transcended mere commerce. Expo West 2024 was more than just a trade show; it was a convergence of like-minded individuals committed to fostering a healthier planet and a brighter tomorrow. From groundbreaking eco-friendly packaging solutions to plant-based innovations revolutionizing the culinary landscape, every corner of the expo pulsated with the energy of progress and possibility.
Against the backdrop of escalating environmental concerns and a growing demand for ethical consumption, Expo West 2024 served as a crucible for transformative ideas and practices. It provided a platform for companies to showcase their commitment to sustainability, social responsibility, and holistic well-being, inspiring attendees to rethink their choices and embrace a more conscious lifestyle.
This year, Expo West reached its tipping point, marking it as the best the industry has ever seen.
The show floor was packed with exhibitors, ranging from established industry giants to nimble startups, each vying for attention with their innovative products and solutions. The palpable energy was infectious, igniting conversations and collaborations aimed at driving positive change on a global scale.
One of the standout themes of Expo West 2024 was the rise of regenerative agriculture. With increasing awareness of the environmental impact of conventional farming practices, consumers and businesses alike are embracing regenerative agriculture as a solution to replenish soil health, sequester carbon, and promote biodiversity. From regenerative organic certification programs to innovative farming techniques, Expo West showcased a multitude of initiatives aimed at restoring the health of our planet.
Chief Strategic Officer of Cyanotech & Nutrex Hawaii, Collette Kakuk, shared in this perspective, “The growing emphasis on regenerative and sustainable farming practices at NPEW resonated deeply with us, reflecting our deep commitment to responsible and sustainable cultivation of Hawaiian microalgae for 40 years. Producing natural ingredients is both a privilege and a great responsibility, and it is heartening to witness increasing consumer demand—and corporate response—for environmental stewardship.”
In addition to regenerative agriculture, zero-waste initiatives took center stage at Expo West 2024. With plastic pollution reaching alarming levels and landfills overflowing, companies are stepping up to the challenge of reducing waste throughout the supply chain. From compostable packaging solutions to circular economy models, Expo West showcased a plethora of innovative approaches to minimize waste and create a more sustainable future.
Another notable trend at Expo West 2024 was the continued expansion of plant-based alternatives. With growing concerns about the environmental and ethical implications of animal agriculture, consumers are increasingly turning to plant-based options for their protein needs. Expo West featured an array of plant-based products, from meat substitutes to dairy alternatives, catering to the evolving tastes and preferences of health-conscious consumers.
Here is a synopsis of brands we saw at Expo West that capture top trends.
Snacks that Pack a Punch

Crisp Power offers a modern take on the classic pretzel-style snack. Visitors to the booth couldn't stop raving about their delicious flavor and satisfying "mouth feel." Whether you're hitting the gym, tackling tasks at work, exploring the outdoors, or simply unwinding at home, Crisp Power has you covered.
Season Brand has been a stalwart in the canned seafood market for a century, bringing versatility, nutrition, and deliciousness to tables worldwide. This year, their SMASH diet (Season's Mackerel-Anchovies-Sardines-Herring) is causing a stir in the realm of healthy snacking.
