Superman For All Seasons // Smallville
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I’m very flattered that Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar] often publicly give credit for All Seasons as being one of their inspirations for the show. […] I’ve always seen it as For All Seasons helping give birth to Smallville…” —Jeph Loeb in Smallville Magazine #6

Batman/Superman: World's Finest (2022)
I think there's something very classic and timeless about this run. You get the iconic friendship of Superman and Batman, and also some great dynamic duo stuff. I think Waid really nails characterization. It's just a lot of fun. The illustrations and coloring are a treat on top of great storytelling.
Superman for All Seasons (1998)
The best exploration of who Clark Kent is as a person. Not all Rockwell inspired art, incredible characterization, and a quiet, optimistic beauty

I was reading Superman For All Seasons and in the first issue, Pa Kent is talking about Clark for pages and pages. And it’s really quite beautiful. Because what Pa Kent mentions is “the morning [he] found [Clark] standing up in his crib for the very first time, just busting with pride with a smile as big as the moon.” And “Watching him push back the screen door and toddle out on his own into the yard — talking to the dogs and the ants and the porch swing.”
Reading that, I really internalized the fact that Clark is Jonathan’s son. Almost every single Superman story -outside of maybe Smallville- never touches on Clark and his family. It’s always Krypton, it’s always Clark gaining powers, it’s almost never about Clark being Jonathan’s son. We always focus on Krypton, hell, Man of Steel started with a long-winded sequence there. Except in For All Seasons.
We always remember Krypton and Jor-El’s importance to the story, but not Pa Kent. We always remember the alien, but Jonathan, in For All Seasons, knows “There are things about being a father [he’d] remember for all [his] days.”
