Day 6: Hiding

Cesar is hiding from a creepy twin-version of himself. He doesn’t understand what’s going on. All he knows is that he might be dying tonight…

Day 6! I’m at work with my mom, so I’m totally not using my data to upload…shh…

Anyway, I hope you enjoy! This fanfic is written for Pumpkinpaw.

Cesar was hiding under a table in the kitchen. His heart was racing as he watched the creepy twin-like being with terror. The creature looked almost exactly like him. But…his eyes were a little bit bigger than he’s used to seeing on himself. His eyes looked…huge. Unusually huge.

“C e s a r ~ ” The alternate said with a hint of tease in his voice.

Cesar quickly covered his mouth with a trembling hand, so as to not let out a sound…he didn’t even want to let out the smallest sound of a breath from his mouth. He was too scared to say anything…let alone breathe properly…

Cesar was hiding under his bed, trying to stay safe. He had texted 911 already, telling them what he had seen, who he was and what his address was. Why had he texted 911 rather than calling? Well…using his voice would be impossible if you’re trying to stay quiet. He had answered the rest of their questions before closing his phone and staying under the bed.

At this point, his breaths were shallow…slow…completely silent.

“C o m e o u t, c o m e o u t w h e r e v e r y o u a r e ~ ” The alternate called with a big, disproportionate smile on his face.

Cesar resisted his need to whine or yelp. He only silently stuttered…The police had said they would be at his address in a few minutes…So all he had to do…was wait things out until then.

“ I k n o w y o u ‘ r e i n h e r e . . .” The alternate said. “I c a n s m e l l y o u .” The alternate said.

Cesar squeezed his eyes shut in terror. If he wasn’t so scared right now, he probably would’ve laughed at the false twin’s words. But…this was not a drill. This was a real situation…and there was a big chance he may die tonight.

Growing more and more fearful, Cesar took this time to try and stay calm. Cesar repeated a sentence over and over in his head.

‘I can make it…I can make it…I can make it…” Cesar thought.

The alternate soon found something suspicious. “O o o o h . . .” the alternate muttered.

Cesar widened his eyes. Uh oh…

“W h a t i s t h i s ?” the alternate asked.

Cesar turned his head, unable to see what the alternate was referring to. “...”

“ A f o o t ?” The alternate asked.

Cesar went completely pale. He probably would’ve gasped in horror if he wasn’t trying to be quiet right now. But…

Did the false twin just find his foot?!

“I s t h i s a r e a l f o o t?” The alternate asked. “O r p e r h a p s . . . d e c o r a t i o n ?” The alternate asked next, giving the foot a poke.

Cesar bit his lip, wiggling his foot around.

“I t m o v e s ?” The alternate asked next.

Cesar was beyond terrified now, not knowing what was going to happen to him.

The alternate smiled abnormally widely…and started drawing his long, slim finger up and down the foot.

Cesar let out a choked-off gasp and scrunched his foot, wiggling it around rapidly.

The alternate chuckled deeply as he brought his slim finger up to the toes.

Cesar quickly gripped onto his hair, struggling desperately not to laugh. He was too ticklish for this!!

The alternate added a second finger to the foot…and made his fingers walk backwards down Cesar’s foot to the heel.

Cesar shook his head violently as tears formed in his eyes from holding back all his laughter.

The alternate smirked as he tickled the heel with both his fingers. “T i c k l e t i c k l e t i c k l e t i c k l e t i c k l e ~ ” The alternate teased with a voice identical to Cesar’s natural voice.

It was like Cesar was tickling himself!

Cesar bit his quivering lip as hard as he could, his hands and feet twitching and shaking in ticklish agony.

Then…The alternate added a third finger. 3 fingers were climbing up and down Cesar’s foot now. And he soon started switching between ticking the left foot and tickling the right foot.

Cesar tried to wiggle his feet away from the tickling. But he only had only a little bit of room to go. And even if he moved them, the fingers would either follow the foot, or move on to the other foot.

The Alternate stretched out his fingers and tickled the almost the entire foot with only 3 fingers. “H o w l o n g c a n a m o r t a l l i k e y o u l a s t ?” The alternate asked.

Cesar whined a bit, trying to pull his ankles under the bed. But the alternate wasn’t going to let him get away so easily…

Growing eager to break him, the alternate sat down…grabbed Cesar’s ankle with one hand, and started skittering all 5 of his long fingers on Cesar’s arch.

Cesar gasped and wailed with laughter! His feet were desperately wiggling and twitching in ticklish agony. “NOHOHOHOHO! PLEHEHEHEHEASE!! NOHOHOT THAHAHAHAT!”

“C o o c h y c o o c h y c o o c h y c o o c h y c o o ~” The alternate teased. “P o o r C e s a r . . . T o o t i c k l i s h f o r h i s o w n g o o d .” The alternate teased further.

“MEHEHEHEHERCY!! PLEHEHEHEASE! IT T-T-TICKLES SO BAHAHAD!” Cesar laughed helplessly.

“H m m m . . . H o w m a n y t i c k l e s w o u l d i t t a k e t o d r i v e y o u c r a z y ?” The alternate asked.

“NOHOHOHOHO!! PLEHEHEASE! MAHAHAHAHARK!!” Cesar shouted.

“H m m m m . . . T w o t i c k l e s ? F i v e t i c k l e s? P e r h a p s t e n t i c k l e s ?” The alternate added.

Cesar started hiccuping in laughter, trying not to squirm away.

“N o w : “ The alternate yanked Cesar out from under the bed and wrapped his arms around Cesar. “L e t ‘ s h a v e s o m e R E A L f u n .” He said next.

Cesar yelped and panted, shaking again. He did NOT like where this was going…

The alternate held Cesar upside down by his ankle, and lifted him up so Cesar’s stomach was in front of alternate Cesar’s face.

“W-WAIT! W-WHAT ARE YOU-”Cesar tried to get out.

The alternate smirked and blew some gentle air onto Cesar’s exposed stomach.

Cesar squeaked and shivered, giggling a bit.

He poked Cesar’s belly button. “B o o p .” He said.

Cesar snorted.

The alternate smirked evilly and drew circles in Cesar’s belly button super quickly.

Cesar suddenly squealed loudly and started laughing hard. The belly button has always been one of his worst tickle spots on his person. And the fact that a person with the spitting image of himself was taking advantage of that, was super unfair.

“W h a t a s t r a n g e b u t t o n .” The alternate stated.

“STAH- STAHAHAHAP!” Cesar shouted.

“I d o n ‘ t l i k e h a p p y t h i n g s o f t e n . Y o u a r e l u c k y .” The alternate added.

Cesar blushed, hiccuping and snorting.

“W h e r e d o e s t h i s b u t t o n g o ?” The alternate asked.

Cesar threw his head back with a girly squeal.

“P e r h a p s i t i s a s e c r e t e n t r a n c e i n t o i n s a n i t y ?” The alternate asked. “O r m a y b e a g a t e w a y t o h e l l ?”

Cesar snorted a few more times. “S-SHUHUHUT UHUHUP! AHAHAHASSHOLE-”

The alternate brought Cesar’s ear closer to his mouth. “I f y o u w a n t t o s t a y a l i v e , I w o u l d s t r o n g l y r e c o m m e n d y o u W A T C H Y O U R W O R D S .” The alternate shot back at him.

Cesar was shaking violently in terror.

Then, the alternate did something unexpected: He smiled. And not just a creepy smile…a genuine smile.

Cesar wouldn’t stop shaking. He squeezed his eyes shut in fear and just waited to be killed…

“ I f o r g e t h o w f u n a n d e x h i l a r a t i n g s c a r i n g p e o p l e c a n b e .” He told him.

“L-let go of me!..” Cesar ordered.

“…A n d w h y s h o u l d I ?” The alternate asked.

Cesar looked at him. “…fUCKING LET GO-”

The alternate sighed. “F i n e .”

Then…Cesar immediately started scribbling his nails against the alternate’s sides with a big smirk on his face.

“U M - W H A H A H A H A T ?!” The alternate reacted.

Cesar giggled at him as he kept going.

Alternate Cesar yelped and fell onto the ground in surprise. “N O H O H O H O H O!” The alternate reacted.

“Kitchy kitchy koo~” Cesar teased with a big smirk on his face.

“G E H E H E T O H O H O F F M E H E H E H E ! B E G O H O H O H O N E !” The alternate ordered loudly.

Cesar snickered and sped up… “No~”

And so…Cesar ended up getting at least a little bit of revenge before…you know…he eventually died.

So let it be known: that just because the alternate decides to tickle his victim, doesn’t mean the victim is leaving that house alive.

.....roe v wade being overturned is fucking horrific, but as I’ve already seen more than one grumbly ‘why are people still posting casually like nothing happened’ post, it feels like a great time to remind folks that a) performatively posting on social media is not activism and you don’t know what people are doing irl, b) not everyone is American, c) some people really mentally struggle with being surrounded 24/7 by doomposting and misery, d) not everyone is American, e) people often have sideblogs categorised by the sort of material they post, so you might not be following the place where they are posting about roe v wade, f) NOT EVERONE IS AMERICAN -

...Do you ever see people critiquing specific word usage in novels and wonder if they know that language can be used in fun and figurative ways? And that this is half the joy of writing?

An example off the top of my head - if I say ‘He gave a whisper of a smile’, it does not mean that the smile is literally whispering; it means that the word ‘whisper’ invokes a sense of smallness, due perhaps to subtlety or shyness, and that is something I want connected to your mental envisioning of this dude’s smile.

Saying ‘But that makes no sense; a smile and a whisper are two different things’ misses the point e n t i r e l y

The world was blurry as he let his head slide on one hand and stared out through the kitchen window. Gordon was in the pool, swimming his morning laps. The sun had yet to rise and Virgil had broken several laws of physics rising himself. This time of day should not exist. But then it didn’t, because it wasn’t day yet because there was no sun!

But no, supersonic big brother wanted to do some special training today. Training that for some reason had been scheduled at sunrise.

It was possibly important, likely scheduled just to get his ass out of bed at this godawful hour. Occasionally there were some issues with having your brother in command. Brotherly love only went so far, brotherly snark had more mileage, and Scott did have that twist of his lips when he announced the schedule.

Four pairs of eyes had immediately turned to him and his return glare had been insufficient to deflect the amusement that followed.

But it was okay. It was fine. He had his own skill drills up his sleeve. Two am would be convenient for him next time, definitely. After all, they all had to keep their skill sets up, didn’t they?

In the meantime, it was black coffee and repeated attempts to focus on Mateo. Mateo was distinctly blurry, and dark and...

“Hey, Virg!” Alan whacked him on the back.

His face nearly ended up in his coffee. “Alan? What the hell?”

“And good morning to you, too, big bro. Ready for this morning’s run?”

He stared at his bright and peppy, yes, peppy, youngest brother. Augh. “Go away.”

“Aww, did the big bear have to get out of bed a little early?”

“Alan...”

“C’mon, Virg, it’s gonna be fun. A race around the island, wind in your hair, blood pumping...it’s gonna be awesome.”

Virgil stared at him, his brain slowly picking up that something wasn’t quite right. “Alan, why aren’t you comatose?”

“What do you mean, big bro?”

A slow blink. “You hate mornings almost as much as I do. Who are you and what have you done with my little brother?” His eyelids drooped all of their own volition.

“It’s called prepared, bro. I’m in it to win it.”

Virgil’s eyes narrowed. “Are you on something? Because if you are, Scott’s going to kill you, and once I’m awake, I’ll resuscitate you so I can kill you again.”

“That’s violence, bro. It’s cool, I promise.”

An arched eyebrow that almost hurt. “What did you do, Alan?”

“Nothing. Well, nothing you aren’t already doing.”

“You drank coffee.”

“Noooooooo.”

“What did you do?”

“A little caffeine is all.”

The arched eyebrow flipped into a frown. “How much?”

“Enough.”

Virgil’s back straightened. “Alan.”

“I’m fine, bro, I promise. I know what I’m doing. I’m not stupid.” A blond frown. “Besides, it’s not like you don’t do the same with your coffee after coffee after coffee technique.”

Virgil’s lips thinned, but to be honest, the kid was right, he didn’t have a leg to stand on. But... “You’re not yet an adult, Alan.”

“Yet, I take the responsibilities of an adult, Virgil.”

“Your body isn’t fully mature!”

“Well, thanks for that, Doctor Virgil!”

“You have to look after yourself!”

“Hard to do anything else when I have four brothers mother-henning me all the time!”

“We worry about you!”

“Well, don’t! I can look after myself.”

“Alan!”

“Virgil!”

“Hey! What the hell is going on here?!”

Virgil found himself looming over his little brother, one brain cell after another slowly catching up with what the hell was going on. Bright blue eyes were staring up at him defiantly, his little brother’s shoulders tight and fists clenched at his sides.

Virgil forced his own fists to uncurl. There was a reason why he preferred not to see this time of day. Disturbed sleep disturbed his calm, his control, and things like this happened.

Scott loomed over the both of them and Virgil took a step back, slumping back onto his seat and hulking over his coffee almost in a pout. “Better ask Alan, he’s the one being stupid.”

“Speak for yourself, Virgil.”

“Both of you, shut it.” Scott could glare with the best of them, but Virgil had exhausted what little energy he had and ignored him. “Alan, dosed himself with caffeine.”

“Virgil!”

He could feel the laserbeams shooting out of Scott’s eyes switching targets and landing on Alan. There was no satisfaction, just blergh. Here we go.

And sure enough, Scott started in on his little brother. There was, of course, shouting. Virgil idly wondered how come Scott got to yell and he didn’t. But then Virgil didn’t really like yelling anyway.

Coffee. Its warmth drifted down his throat and spread into his bones. Oh god, he needed it. Maybe a second one after this? But then the word ‘caffeine’ came up amongst the explosions beside him and he reconsidered. No need to become a target himself.

He let his foggy mind drift a little. It was all his fault really. He could have gone to bed early, but he had made the mistake of getting into a discussion online with an engineering idiot. The topic had become heated, chemical formulas launched like bombs and laced with reactive equations enough to take out half the engineering community. In the end, he’d thrown a hissy fit and sat up to three am writing up his argument. He’d chucked it onto his blog with a great deal of satisfaction and was looking forward to rubbing it in the man’s face.

Just as soon as he could boot his brain.

Coffee, give me strength.

Gordon wandered in at some point, a damp towel around his neck. Being Gordon, he prodded the conflagration in progress and got burnt. The argument became three sided.

Virgil considered snoozing on the counter.

Then he hit on the idea that he could possibly sneak back to bed. He stood up slowly.

Brains bounded into the room, tablet in hand. “Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Brilliant, so b-brilliant!”

The argument came to a sudden halt, four pairs of eyes turning towards the engineer.

The engineer didn’t notice, eyes glued to his tablet. Max bounded in behind him, whirring excitedly. It was the robot who prevented the distracted Brains from walking into the kitchen counter.

“Oh, thank you, M-Max.” His eyes didn’t leave the tablet. “Did you see the p-polymer ratio? Amazing! Such elegance. You know, I am quite d-disap-pointed that I didn’t think of this myself. The applications are going to b-be in-numerable.”

The distraction was enough to break the fuel lines of the argument and Scott settled for a final threat, Alan a final glare and Gordon, a snort of derision. The moment to escape was lost and Virgil slumped where he sat.

Damn.

“Virgil, you going to eat before we run?”

Alan was right, Scott mother-henned.

“Maybe.” Ugh, c’mon coffee kick in. He needed operational braincells.

Scott was peering closely at him. “Earth to Virgil.”

“Shut up, Scott. You got me up at the ass end of the day, I’m here. Don’t expect much more.”

His brother grinned, and Virgil had the odd urge to thump him. Just because this was his element, didn’t mean he had to be a smart ass about it. “Your next physical is going to be hell.”

The grin faltered. Aah, that’s better. Hmm, perhaps his brain was slowly booting. Go, coffee.

“Virgil! You h-have to see these equations. They are brilliant!”

What? Brains’ tablet shifted the remains of his coffee to one side and Virgil found himself staring at a series of numbers that made little sense at this time of the morning. “Brains, looks great. Can I review them later? I’m not all here yet.”

The engineer didn’t appear to hear him. “Look at the polymer decay to reaction ratio! This is a self-healing polymer!”

Huh? He frowned and forced himself to focus. The appropriate neurons clicked into place in his brain and suddenly what he was seeing made sense.

Shit.

He grabbed the tablet, eyeing the equations and spinning calculations in his head. Brains was right. This was perfect. The polymer would be able to self-heal with the application of a mild electrical current. Give it a pattern to follow and it would populate and keep it populated, even after disturbance.

“Did you discover this, Brains?” He frowned. There was something familiar about this. Maybe they had discussed it recently.

“Oh, no, this is V. T. Green. The man is brilliant.” There was that word again. Brilliant.

But it still took a second for it all to click into place.

V. T. Green was his blog. V. T. Green was his pseudonym online, used for obvious reasons to keep his identity hidden. The blog had been for amusement originally. A place to stash his favourite music and art, but at some point, he had found himself venturing into engineering circles and getting into discussion with the online community. It made for interesting discourse and he was able to keep up to date with some of the latest innovations. Not that he could share his own much and IR was well ahead of the majority of the world thanks to one Hiram Hackenbacker, but on occasion he would fiddle with ideas and make suggestions. It was also a great place to postulate out-there concepts.

The equations on Brains’ tablet were Virgil’s.

“Where did you get these?”

Brains was full of far too much energy for this time of the morning. “Green p-posted them during the night and they have h-hit the world by s-storm.”

“What?”

Brains frowned at him. “Haven’t you heard of V. T. Green, Virgil? He is o-one of the leading engineers on this p-planet. I have been f-following his b-blog for over a year n-now. You r-really m-must check it out.”

“Um, must have missed that one.”

“H-how could you m-miss such an important s-site? I know you k-keep up to date. The man is at the centre of a massive discussion about polymer cohesion and decay. Last night, Coloncous in Spain had the nerve to challenge him in the most ridiculous manner. I was so close to cutting him off myself, he was embarrassing us all, but Green replied with this. As expected, it is a brilliant explanation and Coloncous had no choice but to concede and crawl back into the hole he should never have come out of in the first place. He was a fool to think he could go up against Green. But this solution has so many possibilities. Do you realise this could be integrated into Two’s cahelium hull and she would be able to heal damage midflight? Four would be able seal herself in an underwater emergency. So brilliant.”

Virgil stared at the engineer. He didn’t think he had ever heard Brains say so many words in a row. And his stutter had disappeared two sentences in.

“What did you say about sealing Four, Brains?” Gordon’s ears had obviously pricked up at the mention of his ‘bird.

Brains’ attention was immediately drawn to the aquanaut, his verbal diarrhoea spilling all over Gordon and freeing Virgil.

Taking the opportunity, he pulled out his phone and brought up the website.

Shit!

He had notifications enough to clog his inbox. Due to the early hour, his phone was still on silent and he hadn’t heard any of them. A quick glance identified several prominent names and universities.

Shit. His eyes widened.

He glanced up at his family who were now eagerly discussing safety seals for Thunderbird Four. Even Scott’s eyes were wide and enthusiastic.

Shit.

Um.

Yeah.

He needed more coffee.

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

Really wants affection but he doesn’t think he deserves it and is too shy to ask. He’ll literally never turn it down though. If you’re upset, he might give you a shy hug but will let go immediately if you seem like you’re not enjoying it.

B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)

If you’re friends it’s probably because you started hanging around him, Hojo, and Setsuno, and they just… adopted you. He doesn’t talk much, but is super loyal and caring. If you get hurt, he will be worried nonstop.

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

Loves cuddles. Having someone caressing him and cooing in his ear about how perfect he is is unbelievable to him. He feels unworthy of your touches though, so he also needs plenty of reassurance. As long as he’s sure you’ll like it, Tabe will wrap his arms around your waist and stay like that for hours. Your scent is intoxicating to him, and he’s so grateful that you’re willing to let him do this.

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

It would make him sooo happy to settle down with you. He’s awful at cooking, but actually not half bad at cleaning, since Overhaul’s kind of drilled it into his mind.

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

Even if things weren’t going well for you guys he’d feel too guilty to break up with you. To him, it could be taken as “I’m better than you so I make the rules”, and he would never put his opinions above yours. If things got really bad, Hojo and Setsuno might have to step in for him, but they’d hate to do anything that would make him unhappy.

F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)

Wholly devoted to you from your first date. You’re the first person to ever really want him and he doesn’t want to give that up. He’d never force you to commit to him though, but if you ever suggested marriage, he’d probably cry.

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

He’s terrified of rejection from you, so it takes him a lot of time and encouragement from you to say it. When he does, it’s quiet, and probably muffled by your shoulder.

He gets jealous when you’re around anyone he thinks of as more desirable than himself. So basically, anyone. He’s not a controlling boyfriend though, so he won’t try to hint that he’s jealous, he’ll just suffer silently until you take notice of him and realize something’s wrong.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

Tabe gives shy and hesitant kisses. He’s scared of seeming too disinterested, but more so of coming on too strongly and scaring you off. Usually just kisses you on the lips when you initiate it, but really loves getting forehead and ear kisses.

L = Little ones (How are they around children?)

Either nervous or right at home. He shares the hyperactivity and constant hunger of a small child, so he’s the perfect candidate to play with them and distract them from whatever destructive thing they were just doing. But this can also make him a little self-conscious around too many other adults, especially a crush he wants to impress.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

Tabe secretly loves waking up and seeing your face. He’ll prolong cuddling as long as possible, but knows he eventually has to leave for work. If you get up first and make him breakfast, he’ll be in a good mood for the rest of the day.

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)

At the end of a long day, all Tabe really wants is plenty of affection and cuddles. He doesn’t care if you go straight to bed, take a bath first, or watch a movie, he just wants to be with you. To lay on your chest while you run your fingers through his hair and ramble on about what happened that day or what you hope to get done in the future.

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)

Will tell you anything and everything about himself if you ask. Not used to talking much, but will try as hard as he can for you.

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)

For you, Tabe has all the patience in the world, and that’s saying a lot for him. If you’re ever mad at him, he blames himself completely, and will do whatever is necessary to make amends. If you keep doing things he doesn't like, he’ll be more anxious, but will eventually attribute this to his own faults as well.

Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing or do they kind of forget everything?)

He tries, but isn’t always successful at remembering everything you say. Really wants to be the boyfriend who’s always surprising you with your favorite flowers or taking you to your favorite restaurant, but he always gets nervous when putting things together and forgets.

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

He cherishes every moment spent with you, but his favorite has to be when you asked him out for the first time. He had been crushing on you for months and it was beginning to become painful to watch you enjoy spending time with everyone else. Still, he knew that acting on his love would only get him rejected, and that was far worse than this. So when you came up to him, smiling nervously and suggested going out with him? He couldn’t believe it. After having you repeat yourself a few times, he was so ecstatic that he couldn’t help but pull you in close for a hug.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

Tabe isn’t protective in the sense that he’ll keep you away from possible suitors, but he is protective of you being in danger. This is one of the many reasons he wants to be with you everywhere, so he knows you’re safe and that he could protect you from anything that would possibly hurt you. As for himself, the only thing you’ll really have to protect him from is himself. Tell him he’s good enough for you, play with his hair while cooing softly about how handsome he is, make sure he knows that you’ll never want anyone else, and he’ll feel safe and secure again.

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?)

He tries, he really does. He’s just not aware of how to be a traditional boyfriend, so you’ll have to sit him down and explain stuff to him if you want regular dinner dates or things like that. He’s eager to comply though, anything to keep you happy with him.

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

Obviously, overeating, it’s hard to keep food in the fridge for too long before he gets to it. Also forgets to do stuff like turning lights off and shutting doors around the house, so you’ll have to try not to get mad at him for that. He can’t really handle having you mad at him, it sort of sends him into panic.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

Very insecure, but he knows there’s really not much he can do about it. He’ll be so relieved if you love him despite how he looks.

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

100%. You keep him together and give him more love and affection than on a daily basis than he’d ever thought he’d receive in his life. He’d be so broken without you, sometimes it feels like he needs you just to breathe.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)

He doesn’t talk much because like every other part of himself, he’s insecure about his voice. But unlike looks and his quirk, he has total control over how much others hear him speak, so he chooses not to talk. It’s a measure of his trust in you when he speaks to you, and he realizes this, but he’s still shy when you act happy and surprised about hearing his voice.

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)

If you try to restrict his eating habits, give him a standard to measure up to, or limit how much he can hang out with his friends, you’ll have a very upset and stressed Tabe on your hands. He won’t necessarily leave you, but he definitely won’t be happy in the relationship.

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habit of theirs?)

Prone to falling asleep when you cuddle him. It’s just so relaxing around you, and he feels so safe and happy he can’t really help it. If you pet his hair or sing to him, he’s gone almost immediately.

Shakespeare said “The eyes are the window to your soul.” When he first coined the phrase, it was considered deep and meaningful. It was, and still is, but you’d better not use it in your writing. Nowadays it’s considered cliché, even though Shakespeare’s premise has withstood the test of time.

Beware of clichés.

If a word or phrase seems like a cliché, it probably is. Look it up in a thesaurus or dictionary and mull over what it means. With a little effort, you can create an alternative that readers will remember.

Check Google, remembering to use quote marks around phrases. If you find 500,000 instances of baby-blue eyes, it’s overused. However, 6,000 results for hyacinth-blue eyes is encouraging. Try jellyfish-blue eyes. Even more promising.

Every cliché started its journey as a memorable phrase. Readers loved it and repeated it, others joined them, and so on … and so on …

Why should you concentrate on eyes?

Eyes broadcast emotions. A person might be able to hide a smirk or pout behind a hand, but the micro-movements of the eyes, eyelids, and brows will usually reveal the truth behind an emotionless face.

That’s part of the reason authors focus (pun intended) on eyes: eye colors, eye movements, arching brows, blinks and winks, and crow’s feet, to name a few. Can you hope to create something new and memorable when millions of writers are trying to do the same?

View the adjectives and descriptions in this post, and utilize them as seeds.

Ready to go?

Consider color.

How often will readers tolerate emerald-green orbs, bottomless pools of blue, or doe-brown eyes?

Once.

Your task is to connect with your readers, not to bore them with the same-old, same-old.

While you search for inspiration, remember that nobody has irises of a single color. Go to YouTube, Google Images, or your favorite clip art sites. Scrutinize close-ups. You’ll notice a blend of colors that when viewed from a distance seem uniform.

The closer your protagonists move to one another, the more detail they’ll be able to notice in eyes. The description of an intimate encounter or a face-to-face meeting of enemies can intensify by describing the passion or fire with colors and patterns.

Start with basic hues such as those in the following list. Then add flecks, streaks, or speckles of a different color.

Does your protagonist wear glasses or use other eye-assist devices?

Few people have perfect eyesight, but it might not be obvious nowadays with wide access to contact lenses and laser surgery. Exploit poor vision to produce hurdles for your protagonists. For example, they could lose contact lenses in embarrassing places or experience side effects of laser surgery; or they might use eye-assist devices to view things at a distance.

Consider the multitude of props you can use for your characters. Here are a few:

Bifocals, contact lenses, glasses, goggles, horn-rimmed glasses, lorgnette, lorgnon, loupe, monocle, opera glasses, pince-nez, progressive lenses, spectacles, sunglasses

But maybe you want a single word or phrase.

If you need a list of straightforward adjectives, try these on for size. Many of the words will break the Show, Don’t Tell rule, but they might be exactly what you need when trying to cut words.

But no, supersonic big brother wanted to do some special training today. Training that for some reason had been scheduled at sunrise.

Four pairs of eyes had immediately turned to him and his return glare had been insufficient to deflect the amusement that followed.

But it was okay. It was fine. He had his own skill drills up his sleeve. Two am would be convenient for him next time, definitely. After all, they all had to keep their skill sets up, didn’t they?

In the meantime, it was black coffee and repeated attempts to focus on Mateo. Mateo was distinctly blurry, and dark and,,,,

“Hey, Virg!” Alan whacked him on the back.

His face nearly ended up in his coffee. “Alan? What the hell?”

“And good morning to you, too, big bro. Ready for this morning’s run?”

He stared at his bright and peppy, yes, peppy, youngest brother. Augh. “Go away.”

“Aww, did the big bear have to get out of bed a little early?”

“Alan...”

“C’mon, Virg, it’s gonna be fun. A race around the island, wind in your hair, blood pumping...it’s gonna be awesome.”

Virgil stared at him, his brain slowly picking up that something wasn’t quite right. “Alan, why aren’t you comatose?”

“What do you mean, big bro?”

A slow blink. “You hate mornings almost as much as I do. Who are you and what have you done with my little brother?” His eyelids drooped all of their own volition.

“It’s called prepared, bro. I’m in it to win it.”

Virgil’s eyes narrowed. “Are you on something? Because if you are, Scott’s going to kill you, and once I’m awake, I’ll resuscitate you so I can kill you again.”

“That’s violence, bro. It’s cool, I promise.”

An arched eyebrow that almost hurt. “What did you do, Alan?”

“Nothing. Well, nothing you aren’t already doing.”

“You drank coffee.”

“Noooooooo.”

“What did you do?”

“A little caffeine is all.”

The arched eyebrow flipped into a frown. “How much?”

“Enough.”

Virgil’s back straightened. “Alan.”

Virgil’s lips thinned, but to be honest, the kid was right, he didn’t have a leg to stand on. But... “You’re not yet an adult, Alan.”

“Yet, I take the responsibilities of an adult, Virgil.”

“Your body isn’t fully mature!”

“Well, thanks for that, Doctor Virgil!”

“You have to look after yourself!”

“Hard to do anything else when I have four brothers mother-henning me all the time!”

“We worry about you!”

“Well, don’t! I can look after myself.”

“Alan!”

“Virgil!”

“Hey! What the hell is going on here?!”

Virgil forced his own fists to uncurl. There was a reason why he preferred not to see this time of day. Disturbed sleep disturbed his calm, his control, and things like this happened.

Scott loomed over the both of them and Virgil took a step back, slumping back onto his seat and hulking over his coffee almost in a pout. “Better ask Alan, he’s the one being stupid.”

“Speak for yourself, Virgil.”

“Both of you, shut it.” Scott could glare with the best of them, but Virgil had exhausted what little energy he had and ignored him. “Alan, dosed himself with caffeine.”

“Virgil!”

He could feel the laserbeams shooting out of Scott’s eyes switching targets and landing on Alan. There was no satisfaction, just blergh. Here we go.

Just as soon as he could boot his brain.

Coffee, give me strength.

Gordon wandered in at some point, a damp towel around his neck. Being Gordon, he prodded the conflagration in progress and got burnt. The argument became three sided.

Virgil considered snoozing on the counter.

Then he hit on the idea that he could possibly sneak back to bed. He stood up slowly.

Brains bounded into the room, tablet in hand. “Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Brilliant, so b-brilliant!”

The argument came to a sudden halt, four pairs of eyes turning towards the engineer.

The engineer didn’t notice, eyes glued to his tablet. Max bounded in behind him, whirring excitedly. It was the robot who prevented the distracted Brains from walking into the kitchen counter.

Damn.

“Virgil, you going to eat before we run?”

Alan was right, Scott mother-henned.

“Maybe.” Ugh, c’mon coffee kick in. He needed operational braincells.

Scott was peering closely at him. “Earth to Virgil.”

“Shut up, Scott. You got me up at the ass end of the day, I’m here. Don’t expect much more.”

His brother grinned, and Virgil had the odd urge to thump him. Just because this was his element, didn’t mean he had to be a smart ass about it. “Your next physical is going to be hell.”

The grin faltered. Aah, that’s better. Hmm, perhaps his brain was slowly booting. Go, coffee.

“Virgil! You h-have to see these equations. They are brilliant!”

The engineer didn’t appear to hear him. “Look at the polymer decay to reaction ratio! This is a self-healing polymer!”

Huh? He frowned and forced himself to focus. The appropriate neurons clicked into place in his brain and suddenly what he was seeing made sense.

Shit.

“Did you discover this, Brains?” He frowned. There was something familiar about this. Maybe they had discussed it recently.

“Oh, no, this is V. T. Green. The man is brilliant.” There was that word again. Brilliant.

But it still took a second for it all to click into place.

The equations on Brains’ tablet were Virgil’s.

“Where did you get these?”

Brains was full of far too much energy for this time of the morning. “Green p-posted them during the night and they have h-hit the world by s-storm.”

“What?”

“Um, must have missed that one.”

Virgil stared at the engineer. He didn’t think he had ever heard Brains say so many words in a row. And his stutter had disappeared two sentences in.

“What did you say about sealing Four, Brains?” Gordon’s ears had obviously pricked up at the mention of his ‘bird.

Brains’ attention was immediately drawn to the aquanaut, his verbal diarrhoea spilling all over Gordon and freeing Virgil.

Taking the opportunity, he pulled out his phone and brought up the website.

Shit!

Shit. His eyes widened.

He glanced up at his family who were now eagerly discussing safety seals for Thunderbird Four. Even Scott’s eyes were wide and enthusiastic.

Shit.

Um.

Yeah.

He needed more coffee.

“frisk?” You knock on their bedroom door a few times, receiving no response. “you in there, kid?” “Just a minute!” they call, and you think you hear shuffling of some sort through the door. You lean against the wall next to it and stare down at the plate of food in your hands. “tori made quiche again.” Frisk says something you can’t make out, but they sound happy. The door opens a second later and frisk comes out, a disgruntled-looking Flowey sticking his head out of their backpack. ...Aw, who are you kidding - Flowey is always disgruntled. You hand Frisk the plate and they start eating while you head down the stairs. “so,” you say, mostly just to break the silence, “you... planning on visiting chara’s grave again today?” Frisk nods and swallows before saying, “After the meeting.” You walk in silence for a bit before they stop just short of the kitchen, resting their fork on their plate. “Hey, um, Sans?” “yeah?” you say, taking the plate from them to put it in the sink. “Is everything okay with the, um... that man who...?” “oh.” You glance at Toriel, who doesn’t appear to have heard them, before resting a hand on their shoulder. “yeah, don’t worry. he won’t bother us again.” Frisk nods shakily. “Okay.”

You shut the door behind you while Frisk shrugs a jacket on and starts walking toward the bus stop. Toriel follows close behind, eyeing the flower suspiciously when she thinks nobody’s looking. You fall into step next to her, watching Flowey give grumpy directions as Frisk walks steadily forwards. They’re pretending nothing’s wrong, which is somehow worse than what they were doing in the underground. You look back and forth between them and Toriel, who’s doing the same thing, and wonder if they each think they need to be strong for the other. Or maybe Frisk is just being strong for themself. You were still angry when they came out of the underground, and you still wish you’d had a chance to ask Chara about everything yourself, but now... You can’t stay angry at Frisk, not when they’re so different. So... fragile. You chuckle a bit. Chara must have meant a lot to them. They did seem to have that effect on people. “Hey, Frisk?” Flowey’s voice shakes you from your thoughts and you notice Frisk has stopped walking. Toriel rushes up to them. “My child, what’s wrong?” You get close enough to see that they’re holding one hand over their chest, looking suddenly pale, muttering a hushed reply. “It hurts.” “What?” Toriel kneels to their level, getting ready to try to heal them. “Where?” Frisk shakes their head minutely. “My soul... it...” They interrupt themself with a pained yelp, falling to their knees. They start shaking, still clutching a hand to their chest. Toriel puts a hand on their shoulder. “Frisk, please talk to me. You can feel your soul?” “It hurts.” “I-” Suddenly, Frisk pushes her away and stands up, still hunched over. “Chara.” “Frisk-” “I have to find Chara!” With that, they sprint in the other direction, towards Mt. Ebbot. You hear Flowey frantically shouting at them before Toriel runs after. You shortcut ahead of them and grab their arm. “sorry, kid-” “I have to find them!” They repeat, pulling harshly away from you. “okay, jeez, calm down.” “I need to get to Mt. Ebbot.” “you can’t run there.” “I have to-” “just give me a sec and we can take a shortcut, okay?” Toriel finally catches up and you grab her hand before you can lose your grip on Frisk. You jump. Frisk pulls away from you as soon as their feet touch the floor of the ruins, running off in the direction of Chara’s grave without so much as a backwards glance. They don’t even wait for Flowey’s instruction, seeming to know exactly where they are anyway. Have you gotten that predictable? “Chara?” they call. You follow them into the room as they slow to a walk before reaching the flowers. “Chara, can you hear me? I’m here. Chara!” You wait. Time seems to hang still, until Flowey opens his mouth to say something and Frisk collapses into the flowerbed.

“Frisk!” “kid, come on. wake up.” Frisk stirs just a bit in their mother’s lap, gripping her sleeve with their right hand. You sit in front of them both and watch them open their eyes. “Frisk?” Flowey pops up from the ground next to you. “What happened? Are you...?” His eyes widen when they lock with Frisk’s and you look back at them, not seeing whatever Flowey just noticed. Frisk speaks with a hoarse voice, almost a whisper. “Asriel?” “Chara,” breathes Flowey. “Chara!” Frisk holds their chest, smiling. “You’re back.” They blink and hold up one hand, looking at it. “Frisk, I...” They stand up suddenly, barely stopping themself from falling as they stumble away from Toriel. “We have to...” You share a look with Toriel and follow after them, catching up after they collapse again at the bottom of a staircase. You kneel next to them and place a hand on their shoulder. “Kid, what’s going-“ The world stutters. You look up and see nothing but black. You glance frantically in every direction until you see Frisk and... is that Chara? They share a glance with each other before Frisk looks directly at you. “Chara,” they say, “How did you bring him here?” “Don’t know, don’t care,” says Chara before they run to a certain part of the infinite blackness and wave frantically, managing to open... something. Frisk sees what they’re doing and reacts immediately, pulling back on their arm. “What the hell are you doing?! You’re the one who said we shouldn’t mess with it!” “That was before. It’s the only way.” “Slow down. What are you trying to do?” “There’s no time! I have to erase it before-” “C H A R A” Chara freezes and you turn toward the direction of the voice. “Y O U I D I O T.” Chara stands up and puts an arm defensively in front of Frisk. Out of pure instinct, you step between them and the source of the voice. Gaster pauses as though noticing you for the first time. “Sans?” he says, voice so much more staticky than you... No, you don’t remember it. “uh, yeah?” you say, masking the fear in your voice, the edge of anxiety the form in front of you seems to cause, “have we met before?” Gaster only stares at you. Something in his expression looks... vulnerable? It doesn’t suit him. You don’t remember him ever looking like that... ...What are you thinking? You don’t remember him at all. ...Right? “you’re... wingdings, right?” He has a name. You always knew he had a name, but he never told you what it was. You can hear his font now - an uppercaser, like Papyrus. No, he isn’t anything like Papyrus. “I am Doctor Wing Din Gaster.” “you have a surname? that’s rare.” Or is it? You and Papyrus are the only skeletons you know... Gaster nods numbly. “I took it after the war...” He seems to remember something. His expression shifts, and his body loses some of its form. “Step away from the human.” he says. You flash a grin and take a step towards him. “better?” “Get out of my way, Sa-” He stops himself and stares down at you. “Subject One.”

A memory: “When 1-S and 2-P - oh, that’s what he called us.” Alphys looks up from writing. “Oh, ok.” You nod, and continue reading out loud.

You steady yourself and summon an attack behind you. “here’s a funny twist: no.” Gaster throws an attack at you and you dodge easily, throwing your own back at him. You’re still weak, but you have a few tricks up your sleeve this time. He dodges all but one of them, which slides through his form unnoticed.

A memory: You attack Gaster with everything you have.

A bone nearly collides with your side but disappears before you can dodge it. You look back up at Gaster, who is pretending it didn’t happen. You hear Chara say something behind you.

A memory: “how long were you screaming while he drilled that thing into you?”

Your skull hurts. You reach for it instinctively and step backwards. Gaster summons another attack.

A memory: “you’re trying to fix me?”

Suddenly, Gaster freezes in place. You hear Chara behind you. “It’s working! Do the next one!” You turn to see Frisk messing with the thing Chara had been poking at earlier. You hear static.

A memory: “i regret it! i regret killing gaster, okay? it wasn’t right, no matter how horrible a person he was.”

“Sans?” Gaster looks so small now. He never looked like that before. The way he looks up at you, crumpled up on the floor, the fear so prevalent in his glowing eyes - you’d never seen them glow before - he almost looks like a monster. Like a real person. “it was appropriate, i guess,” you think out loud, watching Chara and Frisk, “for someone with your ego to die in obscurity.” You look back at Gaster. “kind of ironic, huh?” Maybe it’s your imagination, but it looks like he smiles. “I suppose so.” “looks like you failed again.” “It was always like this. It was all for not h i n g.” “yeah,” you say, “but, hey.” You summon a circle of attacks around him. “at least we got a happy ending out of it.”

You stumble away from the save point and frisk stays on their knees for a bit, trying to steady their breathing. “Frisk!” Toriel catches up and kneels in front of them, holding their shoulder. “My child, what happened? What’s wrong?” “It’s okay now,” Frisk says, almost a whisper, before reaching out to hug her. Toriel melts into the hug, closing her eyes. You watch them for a moment before you notice your phone buzzing in your pocket. You pull it out and answer. “hello?” “SANS! WHERE ARE YOU?” “oh, hey, pap. we’re, uh, on our way. sorry we’re late, heh...” “WELL, ACTUALLY...” Papyrus trails off for a second before remembering himself. “YOU ARE LATE, BUT THAT IS NOT THE REASON I CALLED.” “it’s not? what’s up?” “DID... DID YOU FEEL THAT, TOO? JUST NOW.” “feel what?” “YOU DIDN’T?” “i never said that. but you’re, uh, gonna have to be more specific.” “IT WAS LIKE... A MEMORY.” “...but different, right? more like the feeling that you’re remembering something, with no real memory attached?” “YES, EXACTLY LIKE THAT! SO YOU FELT IT, TOO.” “yeah. kinda weird, huh?” “VERY WEIRD.” Neither of you speak for a bit, and you wonder what caused it to extend to him. “BUT!” he says, suddenly, “IT IS NO EXCUSE TO BE LATE.” “right. don’t worry, bro. we’re going tibia there as soon as we can.” Papyrus groans loudly and hangs up. You head over to Tori and Frisk, who still haven’t stopped hugging. “we’re gonna be late to the thing,” you tell them, and Toriel nods and picks Frisk up so she can stand without putting them down. “come on,” you say, holding out a hand, “i know a shortcut.”

When the meeting is over, you come home to an especially disgruntled-looking Flowey sitting in the front yard. “oh yeah,” you say, “forgot about you.” “Clearly.” Flowey scowls at you. “You could have at least warned me. I had to get back here on my own!” “you could have stayed in the underground.” “Bite me.” “Asriel...” You both turn to watch Frisk - or, you guess, Chara - walk almost timidly up to the flower before kneeling to his height. “Why are you here? I didn’t think you would ever leave the underground.” “I’m your replacement. Frisk paid me to be their seeing-eye-flower.” “Flowey, be nice.” “That wasn’t part of the deal, Frisk. Besides, it’s not like you’ll need me, anymore.” Flowey pauses like he’s waiting for Frisk to correct him, but they don’t. “maybe you should stay anyway.” you interject. “What?” says Flowey, “Why?” You shrug. “why not? you’re already kinda part of the family. and besides,” you glance pointedly at Toriel, “i think ‘asriel’ has a little explaining to do.” “Oh,” says Frisk, looking between the three of you, “did Mom not know about - oh. Oops. Sorry.” “Why don’t we have this conversation indoors,” says Toriel, walking past them to unlock the door. “I do believe we have some pie left over.”

Pie makes everything better, is what you’ve decided, just now. Frisk devours their slice with the vigor of someone who hasn’t eaten in weeks, only forcing themself to slow down when Toriel hands them another. She takes the explanation of Flowey’s real name with a kind of exhausted acceptance you’d think was impossible if you didn’t know her better. When he’s done, she suggests a nap. All of you could use a nap, she says, and the rest of you reluctantly agree.

That afternoon you dream about a color cube with Xs and Os on each side. You dream of a bunny rabbit made from pillow fluff and the best marshmallow you’ve ever tasted. You see hands with holes straight through the middle and a lab coat that spreads dramatically behind the monster wearing it. You see a face you don’t recognize - a pair of glasses and an eye that never opens. He looks lost. You dream of a vast nothingness, a palpable black, a distorted view of reality. You smell tobacco smoke and turn around to see a figure standing alone, facing away from you. His head is obscured by the darkness. His coat is gone. The inky blackness around him seems to concentrate into his form. He turns to face you, but he doesn’t see. He speaks, but you don’t hear. You reach out to touch him, and his form scatters like wrapping paper in the wind. You wake up alone and struggle to remember any of it.

“hey, kid.” Frisk looks up at you from their game of chess - a hobby they picked up again as soon as Chara came back. “Hi, Sans.” “can we talk?” Frisk moves a piece with their right hand. “Sure.” You sit down on the opposite side of the board. “about what you said in the underground...” Frisk holds their left hand over a bishop, tapping the top of it lightly before speaking. “Let me guess. You want to ask Chara about it?” “yeah.” They shrug and move the bishop. “Alright.” You watch them to see if you can spot the difference when Chara takes control, but you fail to see the moment when it happens. Their right hand hovers over the board, but doesn’t make a move. “So... what exactly did Frisk say in the underground?” they ask. “...that it wasn’t all you.” “Oh.” Chara puts both hands in their lap, wringing them nervously. “is that true?” Chara nods. “Do you honestly think they would lie about that?” “well, one of you did.” Chara’s hands go still. “It wasn’t their fault. Do you know what would’ve happened if they’d just reset as soon as I stopped?” “what do you mean?” “You would have remembered. You would have known right off the bat what they- what I did. I know you still get nightmares, but if it isn’t a true reset... everyone remembers it a little.” “so you’re okay with it?” you ask. Chara doesn’t answer, instead moving one of their pieces on the chess board. “why’d you quit?” “Because it was you.” They sigh. “I never wanted to beat you. I wanted to see how much it would take before you fought me. I wanted to know what your limit was. That’s how it started, anyway.” Their left hand moves to the board, quickly positioning a piece before resting in their lap again. “I guess I got carried away,” Chara admits. They avoid eye contact, instead glaring at the board. “I never said this, but... I’m sorry.” “...damn,” you say, holding back a laugh, “i’mma need you to prove you’re really chara again. i mean. admitting you were wrong and apologizing? you gotta commit to this role, frisk.” They laugh, and you laugh along. You aren’t sure which one of them takes a captured black pawn and throws it at you, but when you send it back and they catch it out of mid air like it’s nothing - you know it has to be Chara. “I never did prove it was really me,” they say, placing the pawn on the board. “Does that count as checkmate?” “nah, frisk can capture it.” “Not without putting their king in check though.” “nope, they still can.” “How?” You take the white queen from the captured pile and replace their pawn with it. “like that.”
