Did you think you were spared?

This year, we are robbed of team days, a shame because we had so much fun watching you frantically trying to solve our codes. 

But you know what.

We are villains. We do what we want.

We have kidnapped one member of each team. And to get them back, each team would have to complete a task to retrieve their valued member.

@teamdoubleoh​: We have kidnapped @prismatic-bell​. And the task is to write a fic about how one of the members of Mi6 is actually a mole. Fic must be 500-700 words.

@teamqbranch​: We have kidnapped @kitten-kin . And the task is to make a photo-manip or art of how one of Q-branch's inventions will end the world. 

@teamcivilian​: We have kidnapped @00qsillyfanturtle​. And your task is to create a list of food and drinks for an "end of the world" party. Minimum, 5 food/drinks; recipe is not required but preferred.

The above tasks must be completed before EST 00:00, 21st July, or, well, who knows what will happen to your dear members. Tag us when you post it, or else we will pretend that we didn’t see it and never let your precious members go.

Headaches

It's not clear whether MI6 attracts the sort of people who get headaches, but it's definitely an environment that causes headaches.

Q gets migraines and has a complicated regimen of medications and remedies that has evolved since he started having them as a teenager. 

Bond has cluster headaches. One of the reasons he disappears for days (or weeks) at a time is to deal with episodes. The most effective medication is a nasal spray that makes everything taste awful, so he indulges his senses to the fullest when he can.

Eve gets migraines, too, with extreme visual aura. She sometimes gets just the aura - Q found out about the migraines when Eve bumped into a desk. Acupuncture helps reduce the frequency. In an emergency, acupressure can often stop the progression. Q knows just where to press (they go to the same acupuncturist). Bond knows how, too, and Eve is considering teaching M.

Tanner gets horrible tension headaches. He holds stress in his shoulders and neck, which starts the headache, then the pain makes him tense up even more. Working out helps. Bond introduced him to the heavy bag; pummeling away definitely seems to help.

M(allory) has TMJ which causes both headaches and dental problems. Unfortunately circumstances where he grinds his teeth and the bite guard would be most helpful - when meeting with infuriating politicians - are exactly the times he can’t wear it. 

M, herself, never got headaches. She liked to say she had nothing but pains in the arse. However, she had terrible arthritis that she denied and tried to hide. 

Q Branch builds a float tank in one of the labs that quickly becomes a favorite destination for all the headache sufferers. Q adapts some polygraph equipment into a biofeedback rig. A couple of the poison specialists chemists come up with personalized aromatherapy formulas.

00 agents and enrichment

00 agents are like cats, they need a huge amount enrichment in their lives to keep sane, or they’ll start scratching up all your furniture. Translated to humans, this means blowing up random objects at best, and outright defection at worst. This was why M largely let them be, no matter how many cars or embassies they blew up.

After Q takes over, he tried to give every 00 the human equivalent of a catnip mouse so they would stop breaking their equipment already.

004, Scarlett Papava, is one of the most sensible 00s of the bunch, though she still had an abyssal record compared to normal agents. Q learned she liked to study architecture in her spare time, and challenged her to design a impenetrable fortress for Q-Branch to dwell in.

006 likes fires and knives a bit two much, but Bond sneaks Q a tidbit of information. The next time Alec comes a-prowling for miniature explosives, Q introduced him to the team responsible for inventing and testing them. He also makes sure to shake the man thoroughly so he doesn’t sneak anything out.

And as for 007? Q just makes himself the carrot and dares Bond to find out facts about him in a any range of time. His favorite kind of food? Q will give him a month. His favorite music? Two weeks. Needless to say Bond is too occupied to intentionally breaks equipment after that.

REFLECTION

One word: community

Everywhere I looked this year I saw community: the challenges + joys of participation; how much we learn from one another when we're in one; what it takes to be a beneficial participant; the value of structures + guidelines to keep them moving forward; appreciating stepping back to look at what's working well + what needs fine-tuning; learning how to clean up when there's conflict; holding one another accountable with compassion while navigating that conflict; the importance of honouring one who left the earth this year; and --ALWAYS!!!-- celebrating one another's joys + concerns along the way.

At the end of my second Fest I'm mulling on these questions: 

What are the qualities + experiences which draw people into Fest? Which aspects cause people to step back from it?

How do we-as-a-fandom support a more sustainable Fest in our post-lockdown lives? Could two weeks twice a year work better for more people than four weeks once a year?  

.

How might we stretch our ability + capacity to incorporate + support newcomers into the experience + the fandom? How about support for those who have been around for a longer time + could use a boost underneath their wings?

.

For some people earning points is a huge motivation. For others, not so much. How do we balance + reward time spent bEiNg ToGeThEr during Fest with creating + sharing fancreations?

How might team configurations + calculating points equitably support all types of fan creations?

First Fest, First Day

So many, so much ❤️

Somehow I've been giddy all day, despite, well, that's a different post. Suffice to say I can use the distraction.

This is about 007 Fest, the July-long explosion of creativity and camaraderie in the James Bond-00Q-00QAD and related fandoms.

I'm new to the fandom, joined last autumn, have been completely drawn in by the amazing writing and the magnetic, magnanimous community. So many wonderful fics and artworks and discussions have "007 Fest" tags, and the rumbles ramped up around April. The countdown over the last week or so was insufficient warning for the launch.

So much cleverness, beauty, and inspiration.

I've followed more people today than in the last three months combined, and can't wait to view and read and enjoy.
