This purple doublet is an excellent example of how costumes are altered and adapted for new productions.
The costume likely originated with the 1955 film The Court Jester, where Basil Rathbone wore it as Sir Ravenhurst, though it is possible that it came from an earlier production, as The Court Jester did recycle some of its costumes.
The piece was used again in the 1961 film Snow White and the Three Stooges, where Guy Rolfe wore it as Count Olga. The costume underwent alterations to give it the look of having slashed sleeves.

One Dress a Day Challenge
October: White Redux
The Court Jester / Angela Lansbury as Princess Gwendolyn
I'm pretty sure this is the dress that Gwendolyn is wearing under the blue and green robe/cloak that I featured in July--compare the cuffs. It's the most luxurious of all Gwendolyn's dresses, with the lavish gold trim and embroidery. It also reminds me of the gown worn by the lady in Edmund Leighton's painting The Accolade (see below)--enough that I wonder whether there is a deliberate reference. Especially since Gwendolyn wears this gown to a knighting ceremony, even though she doesn't get to do the actual "accolade" in the movie!

It has come to my attention that the majority of tumblr has never heard of the 1955 movie The Court Jester starring Danny Kaye. To rectify this, here is an audio clip of the scene my family would quote at each other all throughout my childhood.

Glimpse into my life: I got the tattoo.
For my wonderful following who began their journey with me by reading my first fic "you kissed the clown"; the most of you know I was inspired by my favourite childhood movie: The Court Jester.
Plot: A former carnival performer, Hubert Hawkins (Danny Kaye) and maid-captain Jean (Glynis Johns), are assigned to protect the infant royal heir from tyrannical King Roderick I (Cecil Parker).
While Jean takes the baby to an abbey, Hawkins gains access to the court by impersonating the king's jester, unaware that the jester is really an assassin hired by scheming Sir Ravenhurst (Basil Rathbone). When Princess Gwendolyn (Angela Lansbury), falls for Hawkins, a witch secretly aids him in becoming a knight.
Tropes: friends to lovers, failing forward, clueless blumbering idiot man x strong forward-thinking woman, hopeless romantic, witchcraft, humour, sword fighting.
Mid-writing, I expressed that I had the intention of getting a tattoo to express my love for the movie, and my love the pitiful black-fox jester played by Danny Kaye.
This was the clip I showed my beautiful artist (who is a one-piece fan), and he interpreted it so wonderfully.

It's still very raw and it'll soften a touch over time, but I adore it 🥹. It looks like a d&d module, and I love it.
He also tattooed me beneath an emotional support Luffy, so that was beautiful.
Happy New Year 🖤

Period dramas dresses tournament: Orange dresses Round 1- Group D: Maid Marian, Robin Hood: prince of thieves (pics set) vs Maid Jean, The court jester (pics set)
Propaganda for Marian's dress (written by a submitter):
This dress appears a few times but is notable for both the deceptively simplistic cut (front view shows triangles in the design) to the incredible detailing in the cloak and edges of her veil. I was transfixed by this as a child.

I just showed my roommate The Court Jester for the first time in his life.
We have decided that Danny Kaye's character is a bard who somehow rolls nat 20s for an entire movie.
Like ... he theater-kids his way through joining a rebellion, bluffing the royal guard with a fake beard and a silly voice, accidentally becoming both a celebrity entertainer and Europe's premier assassin (without actually killing anybody), romancing an unusually murderous (even for her) Angela Lansbury, getting his memory erased by a witch, shuffling a live human baby around a castle full of people who want to kill said baby like he's playing three-card monte, winning a joust/duel to the death against a terrifying Scotsman, overthrowing a government at the head of an army of little people, and winning a swordfight with BASIL FUCKING RATHBONE, all while wailing in terror half the time.

Someone check his dice, is all I'm saying.

One Dress a Day Challenge
March: Pink Redux
The Court Jester / Angela Lansbury as Princess Gwendolyn
This is one of Gwendolyn's simpler dresses, just for lounging about in her chambers. The ornamentation is confined to some rickrack and just a few pearls. It still has a luxuriously long skirt and trailing sleeves that swoosh out impressively when she moves, though!
Although the movie does not in general strive for historical accuracy, since it's basically a fairy tale, I do appreciate the medieval-style double-sided comb.
