H/t to @cozotoro on this one, they recently brought up a very cool Mamimi fanart that is apparently from something I did not know existed; The "GAINAX NET Art Musuem", a collection of CDs Gainax released assembled special art that they published on their website. Btw their OG website was amazing:
So this art wasn't just a "whatever" collection, they put some degree of work into it. The CD cover is great of course;
But anyway I just wanted to highlight a few of them that I think are neat. The original shared one is of Mamimi (from FLCL ofc) by Tsurumaki himself:
Which, being dated to 1999, makes this something from right in the middle of production. I love this piece because its hitting all of my boxes right now - after reading paragraphs of Tsurumaki talking about the manga influences of FLCL, how much this art screams the styles of Moyoco Anno & Kyoko Okazaki is a direct proof of that influence thread. The color stacked with the sketchy fill of her jacket really sells that haggard, aimless fog of the rebel teen. (Having no bra isn't hurting that vibe either)
Takeshi Okazaki being aggro as fuck on this one, love the perspective shot. Rei is portrayed as passive and without agency very often, but not so much with this level of vulnerability, and I like how it plays that note on both the physical and emotional levels.
Here we have Hajime Ueda doing fanart for The Wings of Honnêamise, which is exactly the tonal opposite of everything he stands for and therefore the perfect choice for his gremlin hands. Making everything a fish-eye lens so that the picture is itself a globe the rocket is taking off from is just cute shit.
This one actually broke containment, you see it in FLCL fanart dumps around the net. Yusuke Yoshigaki may be one of the youngest of the FLCL crew but he obviously gets it. Though he apparently hates Ninamori, poor girl getting very short billing here.
Fucking Princess Maker fanart, I have never seen Princess Maker fanart! Princess Maker 3 girl has a great outfit, what a trim, even if Princess Maker 2 in the middle is ofc the best game in the franchise
This Nadia piece by Nishigori works well for me, I love how smooth it is with the faded colors and thin lines while Nadia is still rocking things like a rainbow belt. The "modern AU" genre complete with girl-with-oversized-headphones is always a win, and hey now its retro; and I appreciate how modernized Nadia is while still looking like herself, its a good style blend.
Obligatory Imaishi Gonna Imaishi!
But yeah there is a lot more in there, actually this is one of several volumes of CD's. Definitely worth a look.

Passing Thoughts 8
Main Characters That Are Morally Questionable
Recently I saw a video essay criticizing Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise for having an MC that is not a good person. This thought process kind of baffled me because it's difficult to really say that anyone in Evangelion is really black-and-white good... one of the prime examples being the main character, Ikari Shinji. But does that make a story worse? Especially in worlds that are on the brink of destruction, empathizing with a character who breaks under pressure can act as an ego dissolution for the viewer (since you're seeing things from a POV where you can relate to them, and yet you detest the things that they do).
This trope is often employed in literature as a powerful device, it's not pleasant to experience things from a first-person POV of someone who is wretched or does abhorrent things but I think it is humbling because it causes the consumer to check themselves, have a moment where you wonder for a second, "If I can emotionally understand this character and they are capable of doing bad things, maybe I am capable of them too?" Because, after all, aren't we all the protagonists of our own respective lives? Rather than tear into this narrative technique, I think (though it's uncomfortable), we should use these types of stories for introspection.
Learning to Sing Song of the Ancients
Oh boy, so I recorded a bad quality (via my flip phone) practice cover of "Song of the Ancients" from NieR:Replicant today... I eventually became too shy after leaving it up for almost an entire day, but I plan to post an official cover in the future since I adore that song!

2022/10/18 English
Today was a day off. This morning I read Yoshio Kataoka's book "What is to live in Japanese". Suddenly, reading Kataoka's thoughts about Japanese, I thought about myself. I speak Japanese and English, but I have never thought that I can be free from any Japanese essences. I am just a "pure Japanese" and have nostalgia for Southern All-Stars' music. Then, where should I put myself when I read Yoshio Kataoka's critics of Japanese? Why do I learn English and try to go a little far from Japanese?
I learn this from Yoshimichi Nakajima's books. Le Clezio wrote in his book that "Accidentally, I was born onto this ground". This "Accidentally" is a keyword I guess. Me, I was born in a middle-class family. Not far from rich or poor, just middle-class in the countryside (I remember the beginning of "Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise"). The situation I was born in is what I couldn't choose. But I can live without looking at the inequality of being born (or just not concerned). That is interesting.
I went to the library and borrowed Shunsuke Tsurumi's book. After that, I wrote an e-mail about a job coach. I wrote a tiny paper that might be able to be used as the content of a zine in my town. It was not a long one, but in that writing process, I looked back on my life a little. About 10 years ago, I could do nothing, and finally, I stumbled on my career and stayed still in my parents' home. During that period I read Choukitsu Kurumatani's books. Those readings are a part of me. Compared there, now I have friends. I can also feel thankful for my work and private life. That must be happy.
This evening, I read Ludwig Wittgenstein's "Last Writings". It seems that I am interested in Wittgenstein's works again. I am not so brave person to dedicate this life to philosophy. I can even feel some pleasure in material successes and ecstasy. I also can't purify my thought to put philosophy forward. It was after a long time that I read his "Last Writings", and was really impressed by his dialogues himself (and the seriousness of writing those kinds of dialogues). I have been influenced by his writing. I can't deny this.

王立宇宙軍 オネアミスの翼
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise is a sci-fi anime movie written and directed by Hiroyuki Yamaga, and was the first film released by Gainax, coming out March 14th, 1987.
Shirotsugh Lhadatt is a young man who wants to be a jet pilot in the air force, but because of his poor academic career is forced to enter into his nation’s fledgling space program instead.
The movie opens with a sequence of a carrier take off. As I have come to expect with Gainax, especially early Gainax, their mechanical design and rendering is absolutely superb; and their animation is crisp and smooth; this carries for the whole of the movie. This bit accompanies Lhadatt’s narrated introduction of his character and the world of Honnêamise. Part way through the movie he has to visit an air force base to get flight training, a sequence that is used mostly to show his unpreparedness and the animosity between the space force and more or less the rest of the world.
The last scene is where the real money is. War has been building between the kingdom of Honnêamise and “the Republic.” The conflict is finally started by Honnêamise’s decision to launch the rocket (the first manned space flight in history) from the demilitarized zone between the two nations. What ensues is a battle that I can only imagine is the inspiration for the title mission of Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies. A beautifully animated clash of both air and ground forces as a rocket narrowly launches through the chaos.
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise earns itself 4 out of 5 Airplanes, given the awesome but ultimately intermittent nature of the flight sequences.
