Order Up, Up, Up - A Quick Review of Splatoon 3: Side Order

The colourful world of Splatoon is a chaotic one, so maybe it’s time for a little order on the side - but as demonstrated in Side Order, too much order can be a bad thing. This new add-on story campaign for Splatoon 3 shifts gameplay gears into the meta-progressing replayability of roguelikes, unlike the more linear platform-shooter-puzzler levels of the previous campaigns. Agent 8 - the first playable character to return from a previous game, last seen in Splatoon 2’s Octo Expansion - once more awakens in a strange place with a new mystery to solve. Accompanied by Splatoon 2’s idol duo hosts Pearl and Marina, and the until-recently-brainwashed DJ Acht, 8 finds Inkopolis Square seemingly consumed by a strange force, bleaching the world white and infesting it with dangerous skeletal fishy foes. Together, the team must climb the Tower of Order, a randomly-generated series of challenging puzzles and battles, earning upgrades and reaching the ominously-dark and glitchy top floor to determine just what is going on and who is responsible. In true roguelike fashion, even losing helps progress; once you’ve run out of lives, you’re booted out of the tower, losing the gear you’ve acquired along the way - but you can then spend points on permanent upgrades to help make the climb just a little easier every time. Enter the Tower, fight your way up, die, upgrade yourself, enter the Tower again, reach a little higher this time, and repeat until you’re face-to-face with the Tower’s powerful mastermind. How many attempts will it take you to save Inkopolis?

I was honestly surprised at just how well the roguelike formula translates into Splatoon’s style, even if it lacks some of the massive sheer variety of full roguelike games. Growing stronger thanks to the permanent upgrades between each run is incredibly satisfying - I quickly went from getting mobbed and overrun on the fifth floor to consistently and flawlessly beating the final boss seven times in a row, even with weapons I wasn’t accustomed to using! Even in the early stages, it never feels too frustrating to lose; there’s always a sense of “alright, time for more upgrades, let’s try that again!” One thing that Side Order falls a bit short of is the more interesting and continuous storytelling from the other campaigns, especially Octo Expansion. The plot effectively freezes entirely between beating the first and second runs of the Tower, which can last quite a while without upgrades. There’s plenty of fun dialogue and character dynamics between the main cast, but it’s all relegated to a handful of conversations that occasionally play out between floors (and frequently repeat themselves), with the actual storyline only really progressing every time you reach and beat the final boss with a new weapon. The DLC might seem “short” to those unfamiliar with roguelike gameplay - the credits roll after beating the final boss for the first time, which technically only takes two successful climbs up the Tower, but that’s just the beginning. The true meat of the DLC is then beating the boss eleven more times, with the player getting stronger each time instead of the boss; the plot continues to progress with every final boss defeat, long after the credits are finished. The first battle against the true villain is also one of the most hype moments in the entire series - a real, unparalleled power trip. So, while the storytelling engagement isn’t quite up to scratch with the series standard, the handful of character moments still there are just as entertaining as usual, and the gameplay beyond is excellently fun and addictive - that last run was good, but how about just one more attempt? The Rules of Attraction

had to read this after watching the 2002 film adaptation a few months ago. It quickly became one of my favourites. What really stuck with me; was the absolute emptiness of this world and the people occupying it. Kinda reminded me of my time studying in London.

Key things you can immediately identify Bret Easton Ellis’ work by; compulsive consumption, loneliness, emptiness and libidinal motivations / hedonism. As with most of his work, it really amplifies the postmodern fracture of selfhood and obliteration of Truth. Populated mainly with spoilt rich kids [which is Ellis’ speciality] in a liberal arts college somewhere in New Hampshire. There are no satisfying character arcs in The Rules of Attraction, as if the end of history has already happened to mans’ own psyche.

Ellis’ book dives into the delusions of each character through chapters titled with their name, narrated from their POV. There’s Sean, Lauren, and Paul who’re the main people caught in this absurd love triangle. And you get glimpses of other characters too, such as Patrick [Bateman], Sean’s older brother and Eve, Paul’s mum, Clay from Less Than Zero and other randoms on the periphery of this triangle.

As we’re absorbed in the characters inner world, stream-of-consciousness style, there’s insight to how unreliable each narrater truly is: the sheer emptiness of their constant, droning thoughts about an upcoming party, noticing what people are wearing, who’s screwing who, what’s on the radio, the TV, cool gadgets etc

and the utter disconnect between what they are thinking, what they come to express, how they completely misread the intentions of each others actions. It’s kinda scary how far away these people seem from each other.

The real story of The Rules of Attraction, lies in the gaping void between each character’s realities.

Their attentions are scattered from person to person, each as forgettable as the next. As soon as their sex-driven infatuation has worn off, everything everyone is boring again. You get a good, albeit elusive sense of the dynamics, through each of their internal monologues. Thought after thought racing by. Ellis really gets at this anxiety of interpreting situations completely differently from the people around us. In this sense, there is no truth in the world. Paul goes on about his romantic love affair with Sean whilst Sean is completely ambivalent to Paul and never really mentions him beyond thinking he’s kinda weird. Sean thinks Lauren is in love with him, when really she finds him quite repulsive and annoying, and is actually pining after Victor, who after coming back from his Europe trip, doesn’t even know who she is.

They’re all internally going off about someone, and that someone couldn’t care less about them. They’re completely, tragically consumed with the idea, a grandiose mythology, of someone else. A deep unwavering, longing pain colours the prose, but it’s a shite self-indulgent, nihilistic pain which does not hold the potential of transformation. People just enter non-relationship after non-relationship with each other, never acknowledging what is actually happening or discussing what they actual feel, if they feel anything. Characters fall [effortlessly/mindlessly] into hanging out all the time, whilst simultaneously finding each other excruciatingly boring? It doesn’t make much sense how passive everyone is, but also how every one of their decisions rides on pure, unadulterated lust.

Everyone, nameless or not, is connected through each other because they’ve all slept with each other at some point over their years at Camden. However, no one actually knows anyone on a level of friendship and everyone’s forgettable! Noting the descriptors, people are described by arbitrary features like: ‘dumb guy from L.A’ or 'blonde girl with great legs’ [Cause everyone in this university is blonde is rllllyyy suspect]. Everyone is boring. Everything is boring.

We follow these insufferable people, day in day out of university life. Each fake to the core with little personality, no drive, no passion but for selfishness. No one actually studying, just there to party and sleep with each other.

Horrible things happen too, presented so neutrally by Ellis, that it forces you to digest it on your own. There’s no obvious morality, beyond it being satirical, which adds to this overwhelming emptiness.

The constant, mindless consumption is what stands out most to me from this book; there is always music always blasting [soundtracking their life] always reaching for cigarettes, alcohol, meds, pot.. anything they can touch gets consumed and neutralised by their pacified existence. Everything they do is pointless and brings fuck all joy, yet it manages to be so compulsive to read. as it’s fast fast, life just whizzing by, one animal impulse after the next. You really start to wonder how they can bare waking up and continuing with the same shit, different day. They consume each other for the sake of it, even when they don’t want to fuck. It’s truly maddening listening to these people think. Thinking one thing, and doing the exact opposite, with no consideration or care, or slightest recognition of the fact that everyone has their own inner world, their own thoughts and desires. Everyone in this book suffers from major main character syndrome; a key component of contemporary subjectivity.

It reminds me of this J.G Ballard quote:

Electronic aids, particularly domestic computers, will help the inner migration, the opting out of reality. Reality is no longer going to be the stuff out there, but the stuff inside your head.

It starts getting kinda sentimental towards the end, which makes a nice change from the unbearable monotony. When Lauren eventually rejects Sean, he tries to kill himself in despair. Not because he really loves Lauren like he thinks, but because his realisation is that he will never actually know her. No one can really know the subject of their infatuation because they mythologise each other to an insane degree. Finally, the profound loneliness fuelling this fast world of discontent is recognised by its inhabitants. After this revelation, it seems like a tiny part of themselves become bored of their own shite. Finally somewhat frustrated at their own perpetual dissatisfaction. They start to want to ‘know’ each other.

one of the most iconic lines for me is when someone is having sex or something and one of them puts on the Beatles as background music;

‘Hey I hate the Beatles.’

‘I hate the Beatles too.’

I don’t wanna go into too much detail about plot points because it’s something I recommend you read for yourself.

The film is such a great adaptation of the book by Robert Avery. Ellis’ himself says this is his favourite film adaptation [over American Psycho]. It’s wacky without being gimmicky; the use of spilt screens do well in portraying the difference in perspective of each character. The distance between them and any evidence of ‘truth’ is so abstract.

Also, the way they plant the unnamed girl in the background throughout the first half is rlly ominous; she represents the extremity of this spectrum of delusion. She ‘loves’ Sean but has never spoken to him, only leaving him anonymous letters in his mailbox. When he gets with Lauren at the party, she takes it personally, like he wanted specifically to hurt her. When in reality he doesn’t even recognise her existence. The scene with her in the bathroom is so harrowing. The implications of unrequited love. The idea of true love as an impossibility because of too much unknowing. The death of romance is an unwillingness to risk that unknowing.

I’m normally not a fan of voice narration in film but it would not work without it.

The dramatic rewinds show how time is so distorted to these kids. everything’s subjective, through the post-modern lens; the only truth is the self. [even in the book, Camden is such an out of time place. with minuscule moments spread across several pages.]

The film does really well to take the element of personal delusion and selfish lust to the maximum; each one has a completely fabricated relationship with the other summed up by the iconic line from Lauren;

Know me? Nobody knows anyone ever. You will never know me.

So what is the point of trying to get to know each other. Why not just stay drowning in one’s disconnection?

I know the book’s set in the late 80s, but the film works perfectly in situating these abhorrent characters in late-90s angst of end of the world/millenium. In that way the book is slightly ahead of its time, picking up on early symptoms of shit Mark Fisher would coin as ‘capitalist realism’. The soundtrack is still very 80s; full blown nostalgia, echoing loudly through the chaos of college halls.

The montage of Victor’s trip to Europe is easily one of the most iconic in film, its probably the most memorable bit. It really nails how fast the recollection of this Europe trip is in the book. Some rich guy going to all these wonderful and historically significant places to talk about what he ate or who he slept with. short snappy sentences that read like a cinematic montage.

It should completely throw off the pace but it fuels the last part of the film into a kinda self-reflection:

Week 12: Reflection

The objective of my project was to develop a series of visually aesthetic images to persuade people that eating healthy food can be just as appealing and desirable as their unhealthy counterparts. This brief was fabricated for a recipe book called “Fresh Start” by well-known New Zealand chef Nadia Lim.

I am overall pleased with the final results of the photographs presented in my recipe book. The majority of the images successfully fulfil the brief, embodying visually appealing qualities with their bright, vibrant, and colourful compositions. I believe these photographs effectively capture the essence and allure of the dishes, enhancing the overall visual experience for the readers of the book.

Throughout the project, I acquired a range of valuable skills and knowledge. Firstly, I learned to utilize my DSLR camera tethered to my iPad, enabling me to control the camera remotely. This provided a larger preview of the image, crucial for achieving the perfect composition, while also minimizing potential movement caused by physical shutter control. I also experimented with freezing motion, allowing me to capture captivating moments like the drizzling of maple syrup over pancakes or the squeeze of a lemon over freshly cooked fish. However, I encountered challenges on days with limited light, as it required using a higher ISO, which had a negative impact on image quality.

I developed a deeper understanding of food styling during this project. I went into each shoot with a detailed shot list, including reference images from my research. Even with all the pre-planning I discovered that even the slightest adjustments could significantly impact the final composition, making it a time-consuming process to achieve my desired outcome for each scene. I found that adopting an additive approach was important, as it is easier to add elements to a scene rather than remove them from the scene especially when working with food, due to this I ensured I was satisfied with the shots of the current scene before progressing further.

In terms of technical experimentation, I explored various lenses and apertures to create a series of images with different depths of field, while still maintaining focus on the main elements within busier compositions. I improved my localized editing abilities, by reducing brightness or exposure in unevenly lit areas, correcting white balance in specific corners of images, and lifting shadows to enhance textures.

Color theory played a prominent role in my compositions, influencing viewers' interpretation of the food. I aimed to portray a sense of freshness by utilizing light and bright tones. I strived to incorporate color repetition by using similar-colored props that complemented the subject, fostering cohesion within the series. However, this proved challenging at times due to some of my recipe choices.

During this project, I encountered several difficulties that challenged my workflow and required creative problem-solving. One of the main struggles I faced was effective time management. Not only did I have to set up and rig each scene, but I also had to prepare and style the food. These responsibilities, coupled with unpredictable weather and natural lighting conditions, significantly extended the time I had initially planned for each shoot, even when accounting for potential contingencies.

As previously mentioned working with natural light proved to be another hurdle. The limited availability of daylight restricted the times of day I could shoot. Furthermore, the rapid fluctuation of natural light required frequent adjustments to camera settings. To overcome these challenges, I tried using various household items as light manipulation tools. Techniques such as using baking paper against windows to diffuse light, utilizing slat blinds to shape and direct light, and rigging cardboard to block unwanted light proved to be effective solutions. These makeshift methods allowed me to manipulate light without the need for professional equipment, providing an invaluable introduction to light manipulation.

In addition, as this project was self-funded, I decided to incorporate the recipes into my daily meals to minimize waste. However, this approach meant that the food I photographed may not have met the highest standards expected in a recipe book, as I am not a professional chef. Nonetheless, I believe the visuals of the dishes turned out well, showcasing their appetizing qualities despite shortcomings in my culinary expertise.

One key learning is the importance of meticulous planning. If I was to tackle this project again, I would prioritize planning out all the recipes in advance, considering color theory and compositions to ensure a cohesive and visually harmonious series. In the hopes that a more proactive approach would contribute to a more unified theme and enhance the overall impact of the series.

Due to the limitations I faced with natural light, I would next time, strongly consider exploring the use of studio lighting. Not only will this provide me with valuable experience in working with artificial lighting setups, but it will also eliminate the constraints imposed by relying solely on natural light. By incorporating studio lighting, I will have greater control over the lighting conditions, enabling me to capture the desired aesthetic and optimize the visual impact of the photographs.

In future food based projects, I would strongly consider involving another party in the food preparation process. The responsibility of managing every aspect of the project, from setting up scenes to preparing the food, proved time-consuming and limited the opportunities for experimentation and refinement. By delegating the food preparation to another party, I can allocate more time and energy to refining the creative aspects and focusing on capturing the desired visuals, ultimately enhancing the final outcome.

Overall, I am satisfied with the final photographs, which successfully fulfilled the brief with their vibrant and colourful compositions. I gained a deeper understanding of food photography and the importance of meticulous planning. Though this project had its challenges, these experiences have expanded my knowledge and provided valuable insights for future endeavours.

R 18 custom bike from BMW partner VTR Motorrad AG & VTR Customs in aviation style. The old "Aunt Ju" Junkers Ju 52, the legendary three-engine commercial and transport aircraft from the 1930s, is still familiar to many people. The Ju 52 with the aircraft registration D-AQUI in the Lufthansa colour scheme grey-black from 1936 became particularly well known worldwide. During its time in the USA from 1970 to 1984 under the American aircraft registration N52JU, it was christened "IRON ANNIE" for short by its then owner Martin Caidin. It was precisely this aircraft that inspired a customer of BMW partner VTR Motorrad AG & VTR Customs in Schmerikon, Switzerland, to create a very special customized version of the BMW R 18 – the R 18 "IRON ANNIE". Years before, the architect had already had an individual R nineT built entirely according to his ideas at VTR Customs and this time, too, aviation style elements from aircraft construction were to be used. For example, the dial of the speedometer integrated into the tank, which is intended to be reminiscent of old cockpit instruments, or access panels with quick-release fasteners, as found on many aircraft. And of course, it was imperative to borrow from the Ju 52's characteristic corrugated aluminium planking. At the same time, the seat was to be reminiscent of a riding saddle and, of course, only the "IRON ANNIE" colour scheme in grey and black was to be used for the paintwork. A BMW R 18 First Edition served as the starting point for the customizing project. First the engine was removed and painted black. All chrome parts were painted black and the fork stanchions also received a black coating in the form of a DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coat. The cockpit trim was pulled back as narrow and flat as possible to emphasise the streamlined shape. The 7 cm shorter fork and a height-adjustable Wilbers shock absorber emphasise the crouched stance of the motorcycle. "To make the bike look smaller and give it a more filigree appearance between the wheels, we had large 18 and 21 inch wheels made by Kineo," adds Daniel Weidmann, Owner & Managing Director of VTR Motorrad & VTR Customs. As a further technical treat, racing-style HC3 pumps from Magura were fitted in place of the standard R 18 brake and clutch fittings. The dial of the customized speedometer also received a hand specially made by watchmaker Zeitzone Zurich. "One of the big challenges with the R 18 IRON ANNIE was the replica cooling fins in the area of the rear silencers. Shaping these parts into parallel and beautiful radii and at the same time still fastening them harmoniously took a number of attempts," says Daniel Weidmann about the aluminium sheet metal work. This consumed countless hours of work, as the fuel tank, the tail with the suggested tail fin of an aeroplane, the side panels and the cockpit were artfully hand-formed from aluminium sheet. Reminiscences of traditional metal aircraft construction are also provided by the numerous lens-head rivets. "What almost pained us a little when we saw all the handmade, bright aluminium sheets shimmering and shining was that they would have to be painted. However, we are extremely satisfied with the result because the R 18 IRON ANNIE differs even more clearly from our well-known SPITFIRE, which is also designed in aviation style," Daniel Weidmann continues. The R 18 IRON ANNIE will receive road approval and is sure to turn quite a few heads in its new home on Lake Geneva. It will remain a unique model as promised to the customer.
