001. i found out life sucks and its okay

In 2019 I started searching for exchange programs in other countries. But here’s the catch; I needed a full ride scholarship to make it happen. And don’t get me wrong, at that time and age, I was convinced nothing was impossible for me.

That’s how I came across UWC. And believe me when I say it was like love at first sight. But I only really liked it because of the opportunities I’d have if I was selected to attend one of its campuses.

I really wanted to apply, but with the arrival of a pandemic, a really crappy mental health kicked in as well, and I didn’t even remember about my previous plans.

However, in 2022 everything came back to normal (kinda) and this year I FINALLY applied. Each part of the application process I passed, I found out more about the project, its values and I just couldn’t look at it and think it wasn’t made specifically for me.

Except, this time I was older; had experienced more things, and every time I thought how surreal it was to be so close to something I’d dreamed about for so long, there was also fear, because I knew how easy it was for me to mess up anything at an interview and ruin everything.

I spent nights awake thinking about everything related to it. Until yesterday, when I got an email saying I was rejected. I didn’t cry or anything like that, but it made me feel really lost in life. As dumb as it seems, I was pretty close to the last interview, so I was kind of counting on it. But now I didn’t have any plans. Maybe finish high school in my little city, but that’s kinda lame, I know I deserve so much more extraordinary things.

I guess life sucks. Yes, it can be really fun at times, but sometimes things that should happen just don’t happen. No matter how hard you try. And you have to learn how to live with this.

As a young person, it was really hard for me to realize this truth so soon in life, but you have to continue trying and going after what you truly want.

So I created this blog. People may never read it, but I like to look at it as a way to document things in my life.

I will apply to UWC again next year, hope destiny is on my side.

AxC 2022: Day 9

Yesterday we reflected a lot on our communication skills. We started out by doing a Hassle line, where we were supposed to imagine that we were at a protest, and on two different sides. The topic that we were given to discuss was abortion. Then we shifted and everyone had to try to be either pro-life or pro-choice. When we were given the assignment, it was already very clear that some people had their own opinion, almost to the point where they could not pretend to support the opposite, for the sake of the assignment. Afterwards we all sat down and reflected over what we thought and felt about the communication, the exercise and the topic. The topic was handled very respectfully, and we had a good talk. 

Afterwards we went directly on to have a formal debate, with practice in listening and research when it comes to arguing. This time the topic of the debate was immigration and welcoming refugees. 

The biggest difference between the two exercises was the way we created our arguments: at the demonstration there was just someone standing yelling in your face, with no intention of changing their own opinion, where in a debate you are forced to base arguments on research and listen to your opponent.

Then we learned about the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals through a Trivia. Finally, we created collages in teams using recycled newspapers and magazines. The goal of this activity was to identify the challenges that we face today and prevent us from achieving those SDGs, and how to improve them. 

In the evening some of us played ultimate frisbee while others learned how to dance flamenco.

It was really fun to do, and it was a good day ( :

A group of students at a college in south Wales have won a global award for their work creating the first ever language app for refugees and asylum seekers. The app AILEM was created by refugees who have gained full scholarships to UWC Atlantic in Llantwit Major. AILEM’s purpose is to provide knowledge and education to support the needs of refugees and asylum seekers in integrating into society.…

#1 Why Japan?

A part of me wants to wants to believe that my 8th grade anime obsessed dreams manifested into this but I think most of reality would be just luck haha

So in December 2021, I applied to the UWC program. To put it simply, UWC is a group of 18 schools all across the world and each school has a combination of students who went through a selection process from 150 committees representing individual countries or regions. 

Then after the application, and the interview round after, the acceptance knocked on my door in May 2020, in the middle of the pandemic. 

UWC ISAK Japan… that's where I ended up! A small campus of around 200 people in Karuizawa, Nagano about 160km away from Tokyo next to our very own active volcano Mt.Asama. Into a chaotic community, but an amazing one !
