my red flag is that every time a show/movie has an actor in it who was in teen wolf i am unable to restrain myself from saying “oh they were in teen wolf” no matter who i’m with. it’s been 10 years and the urge never stops.

As George Washington celebrated his 65th birthday on February 22, 1797, his head chef Hercules Posey planned his escape. Posey, enslaved by the nation’s first president, was famous for the fine meals he prepared for dignitaries at the president’s house in Philadelphia. But to get around Pennsylvania’s abolition law, Washington regularly sent his enslaved workers (including Posey) back to his estate in Mount Vernon, Virginia. Posey used the distraction of this plantation “holiday” to claim his freedom. He made it to New York, where he lived out the rest of his days. #goodblacknewscalendar #washingtonsbirthday #blackhistory #presidentialhistory #americanhistory🇺🇸 https://www.instagram.com/p/Co-eBjpPeAm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Eating Christmas Pie at Mount Vernon was customary in the Washington household.
In 1786, George Washington described the holiday meal as "the Attack of Christmas Pyes." He elaborated, "We had one yesterday on which all the company (and pretty numerous it was) were hardly able to make an impression."
Standing pies (pies that stand up without the aid of pie tins, moulds or hoops) required a tremendous amount of coordination and preparation amongst the enslaved cooks of Mansion House, at that time led by Hercules Posey. Given the poultry boning and other preliminary steps involved, it could take at least two days to put together.

Dog portraits of three local shelter dogs
Dog portraits of three local shelter dogs
Recently, I had a client contact me to paint a few dog portraits of some sweet dogs that are in the shelter that she volunteers at, NewLife Rescue & Adoption in Mt. Vernon, IN (previously Posey County Pound Puppies).
Her initial intention was to give them to the potential new adoptive parents of the dogs in hopes of enticing an adoption. The three that were painted have been in the shelter the…

The Southern Indiana Farm Girl: Lena Benner Lewis
My paternal second great-grandmother through her daughter, Minnie Lewis Romine Zint.
The fifth child of Charles Benner and Mina Schlittenhart, Lena was born on May 11, 1869 on a farm at the tip of southern Indiana in Marrs Township, Posey County, downstream from Mt. Vernon. When Lena was 10, the largest recorded lynching of African Americans in Indiana’s history occurred nearby. In October 1878,…

With Robbers and Robots (1983), Mike Carr arrests Endless Quests steady descent into the bottom of the trash bin. I like this one! Granted, it isn’t a crazy plot – someone is trying to steal a top secret robot from you’re uncle’s warehouse – but at least it isn’t doofy.
This one is another Top Secret tie-in. In a nice addition, a map of the warehouse is provided, which makes decisions a bit easier to sort out. There is a nice veneer of 80s nostalgia here, with (Eastern European? Russian?) secret agents, arcade machines and robot fights throughout. Nothing spectacular happens here, but that is sort of the point. A couple of kids trying to outsmart a bunch of criminals is just low stakes enough to feel feasible while still being a summer daydream about adventure (and the core plot of The Goonies, I’d be remiss to not point out). Worth the read. Total cotton candy. Honestly, slight Tales from the Loop vibes.
Decent Elmore cover, again with shades of an Atari game box. Interiors by Vernon Posey. Never heard of him, but I think hes got a nice 80s sheen that makes an otherwise by the numbers book come alive.
