If you’ve watched a particular Netflix comedy special, then you’ll know making people laugh is not an easy job.

For Detroit native Delo Brown, comedy is something that just came naturally to her. But Brown didn’t begin to explore comedy as a profession until after she graduated with a bachelor’s in political science from Michigan State University and couldn’t find a job she loved.

“I graduated with that degree and it took me damn near four months to find a job, and I realized that a 9-to-5 might not be best for me,” says Brown. “One day I went to a comedy show, and they were having a comedy competition, and my friends were like ‘you should go up there.’ I went up there and did it, and I won second place.”

In 2019, Brown moved to Los Angeles to further pursue her comedy career. While she’s a hometown hero with a steady fanbase in Detroit, she found that in L.A. she was one of many. Her start in L.A. was rocky and intimidating, so much that Brown took a break from comedy after she landed her first TV spot.

“I was ambitious as hell, and really naive; just bright-eyed and bushy tailed with foggy glasses over my eyes. I moved out there in January 2019, and landed on Revolt TV within the first three months, which was my first TV special, and it went amazing,” says Brown. “But I got so scared, I didn’t perform after that for about a year and a half. I don’t know what it was, I think I saw what I had to go up against and what was in front of me, and I chickened out.”

It turns out that break was exactly what she needed to push through and make comedy work for her. That break led into the COVID-19 pandemic where Brown found herself with a choice: make L.A. work or move back home.

“It wasn’t until the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021 that I got back on my shit, and getting back on my shit was extremely humbling,” says Brown. “I had to light a fire under my ass because I realized how fast paced everything is out there, and how much networking you have to do to get stage time.”

Although she’s still working hard for her stage time out in L.A., Brown is creating her own stages and productions here in Detroit. The bicoastal comedian often produces her own headlining comedy shows in the Motor City, including her upcoming 313 Day Comedy Show Experience. The lineup includes comedians T. Barb, J. Will, and CoCo, all of whom Brown sings high praises for. Brown says that T. Barb has served as a comedy mentor for her over the last few years, helping guide her through the industry, but she says she manifested securing CoCo for this show.

“If you are a millennial, then you listened to CoCo on WJLB every single morning on the way to school,” says Brown. “A few years before I moved to L.A., I did a show at Marble Bar and CoCo was on it. We didn’t get to talk for a long time, but we took a picture together, and I told her we were going to meet back very soon. To see this manifest and come to life in 2023, it’s nothing but God.”

The 313 Day Comedy Show Experience will be Monday, March 13 at Delmar, 501 Monroe St., Detroit. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 and are available at 313daycomedyshow.eventbee.com.

WJLB/Detroit to Hold Annual Coats for Kids Fundraiser

iHeartMedia's WJLB/Detroit will hold its annual Coats for Kids, a fundraiser event to benefit the Salvation Army of Metro Detroit, which provides food, clothing, comfort and care to people in need throughout the Detroit Metro area. Coats for Kids will take place on Saturday, November 4, from 10am to 5pm at Universal Nonstop in Warren, MI. WJLB will encourage listeners to attend the event and donate funds or new coats to the Salvation Army of Metro Detroit. In addition, iHeartMedia Detroit's 97.9 WJLB air personalities Dr. Darrius and Chris Carsyn will host the event. DJ Scratch will mix live music. Event attendees will enjoy a live broadcast on 97.9 WJLB from 10am-5pm, with live artist appearances and performances throughout the day. A donation of $25 or a new coat each donation participant will receive one-hour of free play (excluding arcade) to Universal Nonstop. Celebrity appearances will include urban artists Tee Grizzley, Skilla Baby, and Sada Baby. Special guest appearances from Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield as well as the Detroit Pistons Dancers and the Detroit Pistons mascot Hooper. Nothing is known of his father, it is only slightly clear about what he was doing before the events of 8 Mile. According to Future he's a "lyrical genius" and would likely have been writing and performing songs for a few years . He was in a relationship with Jeneane, which ended just before the events of the film. At the beginning of 8 Mile, we see him preparing for a rap battle at The Shelter, an underground club. He is clearly nervous and vomits before the show. He takes the stage to face Lil' Tic (Proof), but much to his embarrassment he chokes and leaves the venue in disgrace. The rest of the film focuses on his life and deciding about how he wants to make it in the rap game. After losing his job at a pizza parlour and splitting up with Jeneane, he's forced to move back in with his mother who lives in a trailer park with his young sister Lily. There is immediate heated conflict with his mother's boyfriend Greg Buehl who was at one time only a couple of years above Rabbit at school. Jimmy at some point started working at a pressing plant in New Detroit Stamping in order to earn some money, but it was not enough for him to sustain himself properly; he was also scolded constantly at work by his boss for being late and not taking responsibility for this. When he isn't working, he's seen hanging out with his friends Future (the rap battle host), Sol, DJ Iz and Cheddar Bob who are in their own way social outcasts and dream about finding their way out of the ghetto and living a life of luxury. His other friend Wink sees that B-Rabbit is a talented lyricist and rapper and has connections with WJLB a radio station that has access to studios and promotes the work of other artists. Wink is also an associate of The Leaders Of Tha Free World, a gang that serves as the central rivals towards Jimmy and the rest of the Three One Third crew, Wink never attacks jimmy during his associations with his gang rivals. Whilst working one day, he sees a blonde girl by the name of Alex Laterno - who's looking for her brother. Immediately, there is a spark between them. They meet again later on at a parking lot gathering and both end up at the proceeding abandoned house party. She reveals that she is an aspiring model with the intention of getting hooked up and going to New York. She shows up at his work one day during lunch break and witnesses him free-styling with some other employees. She is impressed and suggests he 'takes her somewhere'; they end up having sex in a hidden part of the plant. They start a brief relationship which essentially ends when he catches Wink and Alex having sex in one of the studios where Wink works, after Wink organizes a photoshoot for Alex. A fight breaks out and Jimmy leaves. That night as Jimmy goes to collect his sister Lily (who was at a neighbors because their mother was intoxicated after Greg had left her following her impending eviction) he's confronted by Wink who has completely aligned himself with Papa Doc's gang and they proceed to attack him.
