Christmas and Snow

Somebody once said that the only way to enjoy the sight of snow is when looking at a postcard or a painting. I have spent a number of Christmas Days in hot climes such as Karachi and Melbourne and know that Christmas is not Christmas without snow. وُلد فاسلي كاندينسكي في عام ١٨٦٦، واحد من روّاد التجريد في الفن الغربي. بين عامي ١٩٠٩ و١٩١١، أقامت هذة الشخصية المحورية في فن القرن العشرين وعملت في مورناو، قرية خلابة تقع في جبال الألب البافارية. خاض الفنان في تلك الفترة تحوّل فني ملحوظ مبتعداً عن التصوير المباشر للطبيعة متخذاً نهج أكثر تجريدية. بدأ في وضع إيمانه في قوة اللون المثيرة للذكريات.

في تلك اللوحة بالتحديد المُصوِّرة للمنظر الشتوي، حَصَرَ كاندينسكي لوحة ألوانه عن عمد ليضم درجات خفيفة من الأصفر والوردي والأزرق والأسود. رُسمت هذه الألوان من ملاحظاته البصرية الفورية، إذ هدف إلى توصيل تفاعلات الضوء على الثلج التي لا تعد ولا تحصى، مُضاءة بغروب الشمس. أكد التكوين ذاته على العمق المكاني للمنظر.

قدم كاندينسكي بمهارة توتر خلاب بين السكون والحركة على القماش من خلال اختياره للموضوع وتقنيته في تطبيق الألوان.

Haven Box: Snowflakes

We didn’t get any snow this week, but learning about it was still highly enjoyable.

Nature Play

Four hours of creek time this week! We spent some time with cousin Julia, Kira did some whittling, and we identified a few birds and a snake with our nature guide. The ducks treated us to a lengthy show of preening during our lunch break, which was actually fascinating. Jamie exclaimed several times “Who knew ducks were so interesting!”

Art & Handwork

Cutting our paper snowflakes is SO much better when you have elaborate templates to work with! Both kids thoroughly enjoyed snipping out the designs and hanging them in the front window.

Nature Notebooking

Kira wasn’t interested in drawing snowflakes, but Jamie drew one and cut it out.

Science & Nature

Our science experiment was creating borax crystal snowflakes, which turned out really well. We are going to try and make them into Christmas ornaments.

Forest to Table

The recipe was Snow Puffs, which we made with Julia and enjoyed for tea time.

Literature, Art & Music

Snowflake Bentley was the favorite book this week - we spent time looking up his snowflake photos after reading it. Art Appreciation was Winter Landscape by Wassily Kandinsky and Music Appreciation was The Snow is Dancing by Claude Debussy (both enjoyed.)

One night this week Jamie’s entry in the gratitude journal was for the Haven Box, so I’d say it’s going pretty well :)
