A male Ceratina species from Bee Gardens in San Francisco that are surveyed for bees by Jaime Palawek.  This crisp litte bee is less than the size of a grain of rice (white, long grain) and glitters with smooth metallic blueish green colors.  Glinty enough to be problematic when photographing.

Out of all the described species of wasps, 70% or more are parasitoids. Most of them can't even sting!!! There are some Ichneumonid wasps that can pierce skin with their short and sharp ovipositors and can deliver a bit of venom (one of them being Ophioninae), but it's nowhere near as painful as a yellowjacket sting, for example. The other 30% or less are the Aculeates. A stinger is basically a modified ovipositor, which is an egg-laying apparatus that only females have. Wasps only sting when they feel threatened. Yellowjackets also tend to be more irritated at the end of summer/early autumn because they are literally starving and are desperate to feed. The wasp larvae in exchange for masticated insect meat, secrete a high-energy saliva that nourishes the wasps. At the end of the season, there are no more larvae, and the wasps are pretty much furloughed. Other than nearby flowers as a nectar source, there aren't any other food sources about. That's why yellowjackets seem pesky by buzzing around your drink or sugary desserts. A similar narrative can be said about cockroaches, too. Less than 1% are considered pests and want nothing to do with humans.
