Free Jekyll & Hyde Typeset

This is a typeset I did for The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson with a transcript from Project Gutenburg. It's set for letter quatro, and I used like eight different fonts for the entirety of this novella 😆. Anyway, here is the link to the typeset if anyone would like to use it for bookbinding! I’ve been reworking my Welcome Home oc Loreley for the past few days XD

I’ve also been doing some design study of a few wonderful fan artists in the fandom that have the most scrumptious art style that fits the fandom to help understand the general WH style better for future reference.

Shoutout to @nohomie since I’ve studied their adorable oc Dolly a lot with their anatomy and facial structure. (She’s so stinking cute I can’t help but love her and her train conductor theme XD)

Had a burst of energy/inspiration/itch to get zining again over the last few days

& been finally doing the hard work of adjusting articles from issue 1 & 2 for print, revisiting old feelings re some of the personal content, changing font sizes (one whole section had a font that looked good on screen but ended up looking far too big on the text print), adjusting/improving layouts, updating/revising text where needed, adding bleed and checking any urls still work + changing them to visible text not hyperlinks.

Decided to change the image of me wearing the Forever t-shirt from the original version as I feel better about myself now.

The original Viz Elvis Presley Dambusters clock plate of Tutankhamun collage was tiny res, I had to upscale it & recreate the text in Affinity Photo. - managed to re-find my scan of the advert & get a screengrab of Dennis performing You Are So Beautiful. (found a really good free upscaler at Upscale Media)

That handwriting font was really annoying me (looks a bit too messy, not happy with some of the joined letters & not sure it's going to be readable enough when actually printed) so I've almost completely changed it from Biro script font to Conté Script, since taking the screenshots, after going through a whole load of font samples til the word beautiful lost all meaning . Also the first spread doesn't quite look like that now, I've added some more graphics. 

All layout design was done in version 1 of Affinity Publisher (some of the original layout etc. for the pdf issue 1 was done with a dodgy copy of Indesign).

Finally figuring out formatting for printing out the first 3 Eps of @somerandomdudelmao Cass Apocalyptic series. Affinity Publisher will bow to my will... after alot of looking things up. Have tested my rough with Lulu and finally know how to export it, so strides have been made.

Not bad for having to restart the whole thing tonight.

I always find I have more energy for game design when I'm commuting by train. I don't have the 'bleh' of driving, I can use the time for others tuff, and as a consequence, I chip away at this sort of stuff constantly.

Poking through my Pexels and Unsplash folders I find things that can work in spaces, and then photobash them to fit.

Footnotes in Affinity are a pain. The lack of a built-in footnote function is one of its main disadvantages when compared to InDesign. I wrote up a guide for how I format footnotes and use master pages to help streamline the process.

Free Frankenstein Typeset

So I did a typeset for Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Well, typeset(s). I went through about three different versions trying to figure out a style or a theme, before I finally, finally settled on anatomical asses 😆. Anyway, this half letter (letter folio) typeset is FREE for your personal use! Bookbind it, print it out and burn it, what have you. Just please leave credit and consider dropping a like/reblog if you can!

IM FELL English used for the body font. IM FELL series is definitely one of my favorites for almost everything. And for the "body" bodies, I used some wonderful public domain illustrations by Reijer Stolk I found on rawpixel.com.

I had been considering buying the Affinity apps bundle since its on sale, but then I heard about them being bought by Canva. Has Canva done anything particularly bad, enshittification or whatnot, or were people complaining before mainly about the principle of it, of everything being bought out my monopolistic companies? Has Canva ruined other apps before?

I tried Affinity Designer on a 30 day free trial and liked it, but if they somehow upend their current 1-time purchase policy or make the app worse in the future, i dont want to spend money on it. any advice?

Finally broke down and bought Affinity since it's on sale. Been testing out their version of InDesign. Anyways, it's definitely an adjustment lmao. But I do like that there's so many shape options to play around with.
