When an Anti-Suffragette was Elected to Congress
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first woman elected to Congress was suffragist and feminist Jeannette Pickering Rankin of Montana, but the second woman elected to Congress was anti-suffragist and anti-feminist Alice Mary Robertson of Oklahoma.
Robertson began her career as a clerk for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1873, when she was only 19 years old. For her, this position might have come easy, considering her family had worked to assist displaced Native Americans and translated works into the Creek language. She had also grown up in Creek Nation, Arkansas. After her time at the Bureau, she went home to work as a teacher, later moving around the country to teach at Indian boarding schools. Later, she was appointed by the Bureau as the first government supervisor of Creek schools and then was appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt as the postmaster of Muskogee, Oklahoma, making her the first woman postmaster of a class A post office. Roosevelt called her “one of the great women of America.” In 1916, she was nominated by the GOP to run for county superintendent of public instruction, though she lost.
While Oklahoma was never a state that had a strong anti-suffrage presence, as it had voted firmly against woman suffrage in the past, the push for a national suffrage amendment spurred antis into action. In 1918, the Oklahoma Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage was formed, with Robertson as their Vice President. After their loss in 1920, Robertson ran to be a Representative of the 2nd District of Oklahoma and won (though by a narrow margin). She was a Republican.
Today it looks hypocritical for a woman like Robertson to take part in government when she was against women having the vote, but, according to her, she argued that she had been “drafted” into her position. Quite simply, anti-suffrage women were going to be forced to vote. If they didn’t, then the women who did vote, suffragists and feminists, would be speaking for them and a number of other unwanted motions would be forced on them as well. This also applied to representation in government: there had to be women who went to state and federal governments to accurately represent these conservative women. Antis struggled to find representation, as the majority of women like them were too busy with other affairs, like child rearing, social work, and charitable affairs, to devote themselves to government. Robertson was able to do this, however, and so she did. She was not going to let feminists and suffragists speak for her.
She became known for her anti-feminist stance while in Congress. She opposed the Sheppard-Towner Maternity Bill, which feminists supported, saying “Let the women look to their own selves if they want to change conditions. I don’t believe much for the home can be done by national legislation.” She also stood against feminist organizations, like the League of Woman Voters, and other organizations like this “that will be used as a club against men”, as she put it. The rest of her voting record is rather conservative: tough on immigration and for small government, while pushing for federal appropriations to reimburse the Cherokee who had been removed from their original home to Oklahoma in the 19th century. She was the lone woman politician in Congress at the time.
Unfortunately for her, she would not be re-elected in 1922. She had only won by a little over 200 votes in 1920, so her chances were slim in the first place. She went back to running her cafe, “Sawokla”, after her time in Congress, though she was ousted by the WWI veterans of her community for her lack of support for the Bonus Bill, which would have provided them early payment on their military service pensions. She would pass away in 1931.

Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Alice
Alice was a sweat young woman who worked as a secretary at Wayne Enterprises.  She caught the eye of the experimental neurologist, Jarvis Tetch.  Tetch was captivated by Alice in that her name and naive kindness so reminded him of the titular character from his favorite book, Lewis Carol’s Alice in Wonderland.
When Alice’s longtime boyfriend, Billy, broke off their relationship, Tetch seized on the opportunity to try to sweep her off her feet.  Tech took her out on the town and, using his newly developed mind control technology, he succeeded in convincing her that he was a renown celebrity.
Shortly thereafter Billy apologized to Alice.  He broke things off because he was scared of how much he loved her.  He had come to terms with this and proposed marriage to Alice.  She gleefully accepted.
This enraged Tetch.  Unhinged, he took on the guise of The Mad Hatter and used his mind control circuit cards to force Alice to be his companion.  Fortunately, Alice was saved by Batman and Tetch was remanded to Arkham Asylum.  Tech would go on to find new obsessions whereas Alice and Billy were happily wed.
Actress Kimmy Robertson provided the voice for Alice, appearing in the twenty-seventh episode of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘Mad as a Hatter.’

Something I wanna point out, Emma Gregory deserves ALL the praise for her performance as Minthara, and her delivery as Orin!Minthara is a prime example. Listen to how Obviously Not Minthara she sounds while still sounding mostly the same.
Apologies for no audio only files I tried and couldn't figure it out
Like she's clearly imitating Minthara's staccato way of speaking, but whereas the real Minthy manages to make it flow naturally Orin is overacting and almost stumbling. Her repeating "cut her and cut her and cut her" is also a dead giveaway as she loves to do that, though to her credit she avoids giggling maniacally in the process.
She can't help herself when she says Minthara was trying to take her place as Bhaal's chosen, a thing we know she'd never do just from 5 minutes of speaking to her. She wants nothing to do with any gods, and she certainly wouldn't attempt such a thing on her own, not without her trusted ally in her personal war (you).
This next one where she drops the act has me baffled though
"Minthara murdered her way out of the womb."
ORIN WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? We know her mother is still alive so what could she be implying here? Did she have a stillborn twin? Is that ever brought up before or again? Is she just saying a creepy Orinism (my term for her terrible Cryptkeeper puns like "Baldur's Grave!") If so I don't get it. I'm so confused!
But yeah, Emma has such a grasp on Minthara's voice, but also Maggie Robertson's performance as Orin, she can not only create an imitation, but one that really does sound like Maggie's Orin struggling to sound like Emma Gregory.
I don't even know how you begin to pull that off. Acting is magical I tell ya.

Miss Robertson's Statement
"To the American woman voter, as an individual: On July 22, by a vote of sixty-three to seven—twenty-six Senators absent—the United States Senate passed the bill variously known as the ‘baby,’ the ‘Maternity’ or the ‘Sheppard-Towner’ bill." This bill is now pending consideration in the House. Its supporters assert that it has the undivided support of women voters of America.
I was one of those millions of conservative, [home-steading] women, who never asked to vote, who dreaded new and heavy responsibilities, but God in infinite wisdom placed upon us the burden of the suffrage. It matters not now whether we sought this duty or not, we cannot evade it, and from cowardice or indolence, we must not now fail our country.”

Adventuresses We Love - Jean Robertson and Kathleem Howell
Adventuresses Jean Robertson and Kathleen Howell loved cars and driving. In 1927, the two young women from Melbourne, along with their dog, Barney, set off on an epic adventure to cross Australia in Robertson's Lancia Lambda, an Italian sportscar. The left Melbourne in June, travelling to Adelaide before turning north towards Alice Springs and Darwin, then looping back through Queensland and New South Wales. The trip was sponsored by Shell Oil Compnay, who gave them the gasoline they needed in exchange for mapping their route. This was the first time large parts of central Australia were mapped.
It was not an easy journey - in addition to the usual issues that come with long roadtrips (breakdowns, etc.), there also weren't roads for much of the trip! They'd navigate by following telegraph lines over dirt tracts, and when the sands became too deep to drive over, they'd spread coir matting to give their tires some extra traction. When they arrived back home in late summer, Robertson and Howell had become the first women to cross Australia by automobile.
But the pair weren't done yet! In 1930, they set off to drive from Australia to England - with a stop in Sicily along the way to take part in the 1932 Monte Carlo Rally. While in England, the pair would indulge another of their passions - flying. Robertson and Howell were definitely ladies after Phryne's own heart.
Jean Robertson died in 1981, while Kathleen Howell passed in 2001.

do you have any feminist literature recs (anarchist, lacanian etc) and how would you define your feminism?
i find the idea of maleness as being able to have an instrumental relation to language and the world; seeing it as given / available at hand to them, being sure of their awareness of and their position in it .. and femininity as a state of thrownness, as an alien position to language / law. philosophy is a male dominated field with most feminist writing being reactionary due to that, and reactionary writing tends to employ simplistic thoughts for mass appeal. i'd opt for literature instead where the depth of a feminine inner world can be grasped in a more appropriate way. anne carson, anne boyer, alice notley, alejandra pizarnic, lisa robertson, maggie nelson, claire donato are fantastic writers that have rich texts for philosophical inquiry.. mildly interesting question but so broad!

Dark Skin Directory
I did one of these for my sideblog BlackFemmeCharacterDependency (BFCD) and... While it’ll take longer on this end to do because there are more prominent figures here than on that one, I thought it would be good to also have one for my main...
EDIT: Okay, so the one that I did for BFCD does not work, so I am posting this one to see if it works, and if not, they’ll both be WIPS until I have the time to repair them
For the purposes of this list and on this page, whenever I say “dark skinned,” I mean a traditional brown crayon or darker. I grew up around Black people, so the words “dark skinned” do not mean the same thing to me as it do to nonblacks.
