well this is weird. somehow in reinstalling and logging back into tumblr, I managed to disable the activity count. like it doesn't show me how many engagements my posts have gotten on any of my blogs.

His phone vibrated in his pocket, three times for three messages. He had an idea about who this was, he hoped it was his sister complaining about something. Or even Seb– even though he sat across from him at lunch. Seb could be annoying like that, but that was also because Daniel had been annoying like that first.
Putting his phone on the table, he saw the screen light up with notification banners from Instagram. There was the broad one about how many thousand likes his post workout selfie had gotten. But then there was the secondary banners about replies and DMs. A familiar user name peaked up at him; 3_MaxV_3.
Daniel rolled his eyes then flipped his phone on its screen. That kid, because he was a kid, with his scrawny body posing with a sideways cap in one picture, in a couch with dogs in another. But mostly in a race suit at a karting track. That kid had been messaging him for weeks now. He did the same thing repeatedly; Daniel posted a thirst trap photo (he looks damn good and it shows he’s working out) and then Max would be in the replies sending one thing the 💯emoji– three times of course.
Daniel never responded to him after the first time, which was an accident, but the kid seemed to have taken that interaction as an open door to send Daniel reels of memes he already saw when he scrolled mindlessly through tiktok. He was surprised that a seventeen year old wasn’t on tiktok and was instead using instagram, but that also didn’t matter to Daniel. One less platform for this kid to find him on.
“Your new boyfriend again?” Seb teased with a snort.
“First of all, ew. He’s like still in diapers, mate.”
“I dunno why you let him annoy you so much. He’s harmless, still like in junior formula or whatever.”
“Don’t they call it like formula 3 now or something?”
“Who the fuck knows anymore. They change the names of this shit every year. Come I’m not allowing you make me be late for engineering.” Seb stood from his seat while Daniel cackled.
“I was one time!”
“One time is more than enough I think.”

Daniel pressed post on the thumbs up selfie. He’d gotten a podium today and wanted to commemorate after a long day. The first notification came quickly after. 💯💯💯 Daniel had become used to the routine by now, he already assumed that the kid had his post notifications on. It was weird but Daniel didn’t think too closely of it.
He did notice a difference this time. His username was different; maxverstappen_33. Daniel clicked into his profile, not something he did but there was a change in the routine and he was curious about why.
Lots of karting pictures met his eyes, pictures on podiums and in the garage. There were a lot more sponsor logos than before and Daniel couldn’t say he wasn’t impressed. He himself knew how difficult it was to even get sponsors to talk to you in karting, much less to invest.
While he was scrolling through the rest of the profile, careful not to double tap anything of course, another notification banner from maxverstappen_33 popped up. “You are so beautiful Daniel.”
And well… that was new. Normally he’d get a lion or capybara video by now. MaxV had taken to sending him videos of quokkas recently too. Daniel had never given him the impression that these videos were appreciated or cared for– though he had watched a couple of them– so he didn’t understand this step up to shooting his shot.
Daniel closed out of the profile and then the app. He needed to get some sleep.

They’d told him to record a video for some kid getting his super license soon. That was new, but maybe Seb had been the one welcome in the new drivers in the program. It was quick with well wishes for some kid named Max.
Daniel had wondered initially if it was MaxV, or rather Max Verstappen. But Vicky had told him nothing more and MaxV was supposed to be going to formula 2 now anyways. No way Red Bull would be making such a stir over a kid.
When he got out of the sim he had a bitchload of notifications. Red Bull had tagged him in something and people were congratulating him. Ace. He went to his DMs to see a new message from Maxverstappen_33;
‘Thank you for the video. It was lovely Daniel.’

It happened slower than he thought it would have. But quickly in the grand scheme of things. Daniel stepped out of his motorhome, zipping up his race suit and thanking the handler to his left for his hat. It was shoot day today with the whole team, including the boys from Torro Rosso.
Daniil slotted in beside him and Daniel dapped him up. This would be their second year as teammates and Daniel was excited for the year to come. 2016 felt like the year maybe, to take the championship fight to Mercedes. The car was quick in the sim and Adrian said the wind tunnel tests have been phenomenal. Daniel was ready.
What he wasn’t ready for, was the guy who stepped right in front of him. Blonde hair, electric blue eyes. Familiar as fuck face pulled into a smile.
“Daniel! It is great to finally meet you after all this time.”
Daniel hadn’t ever considered meeting MaxV in person, the kid that’s been sending him 💯 emoji what felt like weekly for the last maybe two years. If you scrolled through their DM it was very one sided. But here he was, very caught out at the very real and very eager kid waiting for his reply. This would probably be the first time he ever did reply.
“Enchante, Max.” Daniel grinned and glanced over a Daniil when Max’s face flushed with a blush.
He didn’t think about it the rest of the day. Not when Max kept telling jokes and whipping his head around to see his reaction. Not when Max would hold Carlos’ hand and pulling him into close hugs only to turn and look to Daniel’s reaction.
Daniil was having a field day and he knew Seb was going to learn about this somehow.
He didn’t think about it. Because Max was a kid or whatever and it was weird.
Max sought him out fairly regularly after that, bolstered by being in the same company and paddock. Invigorated at the fact that Daniel responded to him every time.

Daniel heard the news but he hadn’t quite believed it. He knew RedBull did driver swaps, apparently ‘all the time’ but he didn’t think he ever saw it happen mid season like this.
He walked into the garage to see the host of cameras and mics. The identical RB12 no longer sported Daniil’s number but now had a large 33 plastered over it. The garage was also sporting the new 3|33 decals. Daniel knew that marketing was having a field day.
He stepped off to the meeting rooms to wait for the crowd to clear, fiddling on his phone. He’d never admit it, not even under the pain of a slow as fuck pitstop, that he was interested to see what the hubbub was about. What could possibly be so good about Max that they would do such a public shaming of Daniil.
He didn’t know how much time passed, but he tweeted a bit and posted a new picture to instagram during the time. The notification banner popped up; maxverstappen_33☑️ 💯💯💯
Daniel grinned to himself, still surprised that Max had kept this up. Still apparently had his post notifications on. The door opened.
“Daniel that picture was lovely.” Max sat in the seat across from him in the conference room. His RedBull polo was a little askew, and he was smiling widely.

This is what Halsey posted the other day in her instagram stories. I posted it on my page, sharing my opinion how I didn't think Columbia Records would be happy to see this kind of anti-semitic messaging coming from one of their own artists. The entire Halsey fan community on this platform attacked and bullied me. I had to stop following them and block them. People who I thought were my friends. Horrible backstabbing anti-semitic monsters. All I stated were facts. The CEO and COO are Jewish. The A&R person at Columbia is Jewish. Clive Davis is the founder and is also Jewish. Halsey's manager is Jewish. But according to Halsey fans on here, that makes me a racist because I stated the fact these people working on Halsey's career are Jewish. It got so bad I had to change my name. Maybe you have better luck posting the facts.
First of all, you should never delete your opinion on your blog. If people don't like what you have to say, they can easily skim past your page or you can make them fuck off by blocking them.
I have no problem telling Halsey fans to go choke on a baklava before I click on that block button. The fact that Halsey fans in general lack their own personality and decided to be one of those "they/them" and "bi" this or that or whatever - just because their idiotic hero is all those things, is very telling. These people aren't even teenagers anymore. They are in their mid 20's - early 30's. They grew up with Halsey. The hilarious part of all this is that Halsey isn't any of those things. She's not bi and she sure as hell isn't a "they" but you know how annoying Millennials and Gen Z are. They find a problem and drama for everything. Halsey's whole brand has always been the annoying loudmouth obnoxious social justice warrior. You would think that having a kid would stop all that foolishness but no - she's chooses to be a one of those "they" people. Even after popping a baby out of her actual vagina.
In my opinion, Halsey is plummeting fast when it comes to her music career. She's lucky her makeup line is doing very well because as far as her music? That is a dead on arrival effort. I don't think Columbia will be able to pull a Capitol Records - taking an almost two year old song (Without Me) and throwing it into a new album (Manic) and stealing the hit single's successful streaming numbers and sales. That's how Manic didn't flop. But does anyone (outside of her psychotic fan base) truly gives a crap about Manic? Hell no. The reviews for that album were mostly negative. Pitchfork even said what an awful album it was and she went on Twitter wishing the basement where Pitchfork is located would crumble. What she didn't know is that Pitchfork is located at the Freedom Tower in New York City. That's the same location the Twin Towers use to be. The same Towers that were destroyed on September 11, 2001. How stupid did she look saying something like that? Very. She hasn't used Twitter/X as much as she use to after that. She was too busy exploiting Evan Peters on her IG at the time.
She had the gift of Trent Reznor and Atticus Finch producing her album and it bombed. Usually, everything Trent touches turns to gold, but what he produced for Halsey flopped. It flopped hard. A first in Trent Reznor's career. That means a lot of people just don't like Halsey. Imagine had it been Amy Lee instead of Halsey? It would have made a big difference.
Now, as much as Halsey's fans like to ignore this fact (or stay stupid - your pick) the people running her music career now are all mostly Jewish. Ron Perry, the present CEO for Columbia Records is Jewish. Halsey's manager, Jason Aron is Jewish. When Jason was posting about supporting Israel, donations, his family in Israel, etc. - Halsey's psychotic fans came into his IG page and started threatening this poor man's life. They were calling him an evil Zionist and other disgusting choice words.
Halsey's fans are demonic and yes, they are all antisemitic. Except maybe for a very small percentage like 0000.1% of the fanbase. The only Halsey fan that I seen on Tumblr that is normal, sane and not antisemitic is you. I'm sure out there, on other social media platforms there's more nice fans like you. The thing is, they aren't obnoxious or demonically loud as the antisemitic ones who scream "Free Palestine!!!" on every Halsey post.
That's why I feel Halsey posted this disgusting Gaza/Palestine propaganda garbage on her IG. To appease her disgusting fan base, who are 99% antisemitic. She's going to need them to buy/stream her new music. If she doesn't do well, Columbia will drop her in a heartbeat. The same way Capitol chose not to renew her contract. Capitol are dicks for what they have done to Katy Perry and Sky Ferreira, but look at all the money they spent on If I Can't Have Love, I want Power. Close to 25 million dollars - and it flopped! The next single she released So Good flopped. That's why they refused to renew her contract. I don't blame them at all.
So now, more then ever, she will need all her little antisemitic fans to support her new music.
Also, knowing that her manager is Jewish, why would she ever post something so disgusting against his people? I'm sure Ron Perry didn't celebrate that IG story either. He's probably sitting somewhere regretting that he signed her.
Do yourself a favor and block every single Halsey account on Tumblr. Trust none of them to be "your friend" because they aren't anyone's friend. Get a real friend in the real world. Finding friends on Tumblr isn't it.

Back in my monthly depression era ig but. Thinking about social media and art, and how their relationship has fucked with me. I'm glad I started drawing fanart and I don't regret it. And I think I've really improved my skill this past half year plus. But man it gives me such a terrible complex. That paranoia of "who even would give a shit about this" and "when will people be done with me."
I think any artist always craves some recognition and praise no matter how much you say you draw for yourself. You can draw for yourself but it's still extremely gratifying and inspiring to have people's approval or thoughts on it.I used to draw for myself more and draw so much random art, but I discussed it a lot with friends and it made it more gratifying, to have that interest. And I lost that kinda, a lot. I feel like for a bit btwn losing that and drawing fanart, I can't really remember, I didn't draw as much bcs it just felt a bit unrewarded and it felt bleh.
And then I started drawing fanart. Which felt very rewarding. I'm happy I've not ever really felt the desire to make widely "appealing" art. If you look at even the first things I posted, it's extremely niche, and that's been a lot of fun! But it's also just made me so paranoid and self conscious. What if people get tired of this. What if people find it strange. What if people find it annoying. What if I'm being repetitive. Etc. It's really irritating bcs I KNOW people have told me they find my stuff interesting and that they like it. But my brain can't help but think, what is the expiration date on this, when will it become boring. I discuss my art with people and it's fun, but that self consciousness clings to me like a parasite. Like ah I better hurry this up and enjoy it while I can before they get annoyed and tired of it.
I guess this is all to say, I don't always like my relationship with art, and I hate the way social media messes with your brain. I remember for a bit I would post my art on Instagram and do the whole hashtag game. And then realized it was messing with my relationship with art so I dropped it. And then did the same thing with Twitter, than dropped it, etc. I just hate how I can't let myself enjoy anything. Idk maybe I'm just burnt out or something, but whenever I think of drawing lately, there's just this voice being like "what's the point of even drawing this, why would anyone care." I hate you evil voice in my brain!!!! It's not even a thing about notes, and I feel greedy even simply admitting any of this. I think it's more of a craving of a deeper connection and discussion. Which is what I always seek when I create art. But social media makes you think about numbers and attention and makes it unhealthy and makes you feel guilty for wanting something that's pretty reasonable.
Blah blah blah anyways don't reply to this like, oh you need to fix your relationship w art by taking a break from socmed! It's just this continual cycle and maybe one day I'll break it. But sometimes it just hits harder some days. I just want to stop feeling cringe. I hate it cause internally I'm like "I am cringe but I am free" but that only has to do with actually creating the stuff. Posting about it is the trap I think. Again though, it's natural to crave discussion and approval, but putting myself out there makes me want to curl up in a ball. I miss the days when I was younger and creating all kinds of random art and forcing it upon people with absolutely no shame. But now it's like. I toss my art into the room and shut the door and hide behind it with bated breath. And it often feels like any conversation I have just sates me for a tiny bit and then I go back to feeling empty. Is it ungrateful? Or is it just natural to want to keep having and partaking in a good thing?
Someone sent me advice on this feeling at some point, about how its better to talk to people individually rather than just on main. And I agree! I had a lot of fun the last third of last year. And for some reason it's just felt different ever since the new year began. I just don't know how to recover, and to start having fun like that again. I've drawn a lot of things I've immensely enjoyed since the year began, but for some reason, which I can't really parse, have had way worse self loathing and insecurity about it all. I just wanna recover my joy back :( is that too much to ask
Tldr; yay art improvement! Complex ideas! Much discussion! However: nay! Makes me feel cringe! Makes me feel like I'm running on limited time! Makes me crave too much!

A lot. Wanna rlly understand where he is coming from but he is just contradicting and aggressive towards us.
PART 1
It all started when Geo left the server he created, he told us that he isn't in the fandom anymore and trying to move on from it. Were like ok have fun with ur new fandom (although we were very confused cuz he still post jamilton/hamilton content but think nothing of it)
Until one day out of the blue i found out im blocked including some of us in the server. I was confused and shocked at first cuz why would u do that? Did i do something wrong? (theres a lot of that in this relationship and if u think its tiring trust me its worse)
I only got an "explanation" from a mutual friend of ours that he did this to cut ties and properly move on, so I connected to him in Instagram (cuz he haven't block me there) and ask for an explanation which was again along the lines "they wanna move on and do different things" i was like ok (even though its a douche move of him to just drop me without explaining it directly to me) I said my last goodbye and that was that. Well so i have though cuz he keeps messaging me still everyday even go as far creating a gc with me in it, which was weird considering he wanted to move on but think nothing of it.
Until allie spoke out about how geo was an awful person to him. And well i thought Geo was only saying mean shit behind their backs ig he also do it right in front of their faces.
Its mostly in Filipino but its basically Geo saying how allie was annoying him just because allie disagreed with him and instead of talking to Allie (which i was urging him to do but refuses cuz he said and i quote "Dont u want that theres drama?" "Ur making everyone tense" "good") about it he made a comment for the entire server to see and it made us all uncomfortable.
Sooner or later a lot of people are speaking about the stuff Geo has done and said to them ( a lot of backstabbing, trash talking all because we have disagreed with something he says)
Example me saying "Oh i hc Thomas wearing dresses but thats ok too" he got so mad about that comment and put me on time out and forced me to apologize and blocked me
And so we all agreed that he was a bad person after all the things he put us through. We had a DC game night we had sm fun and we played gartic and well...
And apparantly he have spies in the server and saw that which he posted to his story
Naturally yes its mean I ADMIT but after all he put me through idc. Our friend Beat saw this and told him off (apparantly beat knew about all the backstabbing bullying and sided with us)
I mean all i did was draw a trashcan and made an arrow ur name but ig that's equivalent of me kms
This shows Geo actually admitting to all the times he made someone uncomfy ("ive been the mastermind in every single fucking drama we make")
Then it all spiraled after that. He send invites to his friends to attack us and victims blame us, invalidating all our horrible experiences with Geo. He sent spies to make himself look like the victim (actually funny thing his username was "victim" in the next story)

First Post-Jury Ranking: Split House of Hell Edition
This is late obviously but so much has happened this week so I have to include this as if it was made when it was supposed to lol. I’m including Joseph and Jasmine since they were just evicted only hours ago.
1. Taylor (Prev 1)- Still remains unproblematic as always :)
2. Joseph (Prev 3)- He’s quickly moving up after the events of this week because it only further proved how genuine and loyal this man is, even if he was playing both sides of the house and lying a lot to the people he wasn’t aligned with. I highly respect Joseph’s game and morals and seeing him so down and isolated made me so upset. He’s truly a good guy and I hope he at least knows that coming out of this game.
3. Monte (Prev 4)- Monte is actually pretty cool???? The more I watch him talk and game, the more I start to really like this guy. I think he plays very well and could seriously make it far. Also he is clocking Kyle’s game with Taylor because they KNOW who to target unlike a lot of other people.
4. Brittany (Prev 5)- The only reason she went up was because Turner went down, so I’m still wary of her, especially since she seems to be trying so hard to be Alyssa’s friend and is aligning with the other white people like girl do you not see how weird that is? You have Taylor! I’m glad she finally won a comp on her own and is gaining some autonomy but her gameplay is so weird and it’s like she’s trying harder to be liked than win :(.
5. Michael (Prev 6)- Moving up for same reason as Brittany. He is so smart and his moves are strategically good, but goddamn do I hate them sandajsdasd because really he’s the reason Joseph is gone. Michael has this shit all planned so that he would be out of anyone’s target list, and I hate that it’s working but also good for him ig. He seems to be out of true allegiance with Kyle and doesn’t gaf about him so that’s a plus but also he’s liked that with everyone and as much as I respect it, it also makes me angry when everyone trusts him blindly ahhhhhh
6. Turner (Prev 2)- I want to like him so bad because he’s funny and seems like somebody I would get along with irl, but then he pulls some whack shit and aligns with the absolute worst people constantly like.....his taste in people sucks. He’s making some bad fucking moves and I hope this bites him in the ass and he realizes he messed tf up.
7. Jasmine (Prev 8)- I couldn’t bring myself to put Jasmine any higher than this but I will say, I think I might miss her? Like she was cracked af and started becoming actually kinda tolerable this week. Minus the birthday week/month bullshit she seemed to be humbled a bit after she was called out for everything, and I have to admit that she is not the worst one by far.
8. Terrance (Prev 10)- I still hate this man, but at least he gave us some pretty good content this week. Were his moves totally smart and masterful? Not in the slightest, but I thought it was kinda iconic of him to just sit there and watch everyone fight and cause chaos like honestly if I had no loyalty or alliance with anyone in the game I’d do the same akjdosdf
9. Alyssa (Prev 9)- She just sucks. Boring, lame, bland, annoying, stupid, everything wrong with Big Brother. You name it. Next.
10. Kyle (Prev 11)- Just when we all thought he couldn’t get worse, he rats out his entire alliance to Terrance and Alyssa, gets mad at Joseph for being upset about that, turns Turner against Joseph and isolates him, and creates an alliance against the POC in the house AGAIN??? I can’t with him he’s garbage please get him out of here oh my god

we can do better
The #notallmen argument is a load of bollocks and here’s my view on why.
Before reading this, allow me to acknowledge that I’m a male writing about the realities of what it means to be a woman, so I’m likely to say something that might be out of place or incorrect. I may have no lived experience as a woman but my intentions are from a place of decency. I do however have access to what we all possess (to varying degrees), which is the power of observation and critical thought. With that in mind, let’s get on with it.
Recently I had yet another experience hearing complaints from a man about how annoying these women’s protests are; paraphrasing “we saw another women’s march, protesting about something” (eyes rolled with delivery). The man doing the talking was pissed off at one particular woman he’d noticed, it was her tee-shirt that bothered him, specifically the words written on it; “dont fucking touch me”. I assume he was venting his frustration because he thought of himself as NOT one of those men that would grope a woman (without consent). I added my two cents saying “It’s sad that we’re still in a situation where she needs to be at a protest wearing that tee-shirt” or something of that nature. I was attempting to acknowledge the shitty reality that in 2021, the crappy male on female behavior continues and necessitates women protesting to voice frustrations and demand equality, equality that should simply be a given. We don’t see thousands of men on the streets protesting for equal rights and demanding to feel safe walking home in the dark, travelling to work on a train or merely existing, because men simply don’t face those threats. Nor do men have to deal with the issues of unequal pay, or have gender based stumbling blocks when climbing the ranks of the corporate or political world. Consider this, there doesn’t exist the concept of minimum quota for male representation in political parties, but there does for females, and it’s often set by males. The irony! Men are the perpetrators, the predators, the club members, the privileged. If that makes you feel uncomfortable, you might be part of the problem.
With our collective intelligence you’d think we’d have already dealt with this level of inequality generations ago. Turns out, that and other issues such as not destroying our planet or hating people simply because of the colour of their skin are still on the to be completed list. Am I being too kind assuming we actually possess said collective intelligence? Perhaps. Social change is slow, I get that, but come on, we need to actively work harder at this, and us men need to take more of a lead by changing our behaviour.
A recent Instagram post by the clever satire account Betoota Advocate (IG @betootaadvocate) described a fictitious local man walking home late at night after work when he notices a passing group of rowdy women. Feeling the impending threat of danger he clenches his keys for protection and recalls his self defense training, crosses to the other side of the street to avoid the chance of an unsavory encounter with a bunch of drunk women. It’s satire and sarcasm rolled over a clever bunch of words and one would assume the article’s intention was to give male readers an idea of what goes through the minds of women every day. To no surprise some men just didn’t get it, many made jokes, some people got triggered by it and some thought it was brilliant. We all interpret things differently, the beauty of being human. The comments people posted in response (both male and female) were intriguing. I won’t elaborate on them, but please visit that rabbit hole yourself, it’s a fascinating insight. The point being is that the article provoked discussion and that’s not a bad thing. Conversation, when approached with a calm decorum is a great starting point, and is often a catalyst that leads to change. Sadly for many people, the issue of men’s behaviour towards women doesn’t get much thought and therein lies one of humanity’s big challenges. Apathy.
In recent times we’ve heard about the horrible events surrounding the murder of Sarah Everard in the UK and in Australia we’ve observed the less than average response from the Prime Minister over the Brittany Higgins case. But it’s not just a recent issue, this is old news as it is new news. It’s constant throughout human history, men simply do not treat women with the same respect they demand for themselves. What’s different now is that the voices are louder, they’re not able to be silenced as much as the old days. The voices of female pain and frustration are being heard, they can no longer be ignored and men are challenged by this power shift.
The most frustrating thing to observe is men’s reaction to the situation. Firstly the silence is bullshit. Most of us are engaged on social media on one or more platforms and over the last few months I’ve seen mostly women posting on the topic but most men I follow are deathly silent. I acknowledge that posting a feminist meme or political commentary on social media doesn’t solve the world’s problems but it does make people think, it can start conversations. Men are noticeably quiet on the matter possibly for fear of male retribution, which is no doubt what I’ll get from this article. If men do pipe up it’s often to blurt something unconsidered about it being ‘not all men’ or that they feel attacked by all this ‘male hate’. Point completely missed fellas. Ps. It’s not about you.
The issue of rape and female sexual abuse/violence is a serious matter, there’s no denying that, it sits at the extreme pointy end of a triangle of bad male behaviour. Under the pointy end of the triangle is a raft of shitty male behavior, we grow up with it, we’re both unofficially and systematically taught it. It’s embedded in daily life. There’s still something horribly archaic about how we define masculinity. That toxic tough guy bullshit should have been dead and buried years ago but it holds on like a poorly scripted Rocky movie. Men have emotions, vulnerability, tenderness, sensitivity but they’re all still rarely shown in public because they don’t fit into the expected masculine parameters. This is part of the problem, that absolute thinking that we subscribe to, black and white, us and them, it’s divisive and will always be. The older I get the more obvious the array of grey area is for almost every social issue. Everything is far more complex than its superficial appearance. In terms of masculinity I believe it to be a much broader spectrum than society perpetuates.
What sits underneath the extreme behavior of rape, assult and violonce against women is an excess of unsavory male behaviour. Chances are, if you’re a male you will have experienced it many times. We all have, myself included. It’s the comments men make to each other that women aren’t privy to, like when eyeballing a female at the beach and making some comment about how good bikinis are or rating the ‘fuckability’ a woman is as she walks past you and your mates. Or calling a female a slut because she’s rooted a few blokes you know. Really? What two consenting adults do in their own time is none of your business and why is it that when a woman likes to have multiple sexual partners shes a slut, but when a male does it he’s a champion conqueror? It’s these double standards that we men need to address. (Actually women do a fairly good job of slut shaming each other, duly noted). It’s men complaining about whingey feminist activists and mansplaining that women do have equal pay and equal rights as men and thus don’t need to be protesting, which couldn’t be farther from reality. It’s men saying “women attack men too you know!” Yes, but it doesn’t take much of a google search to see how unbalanced the situation is in terms of male on female domestic violence (that far too often ends in the death of the female), or the statistics on rape, sexual assult/harresment towards women. Did that sentence even need to be written? Let’s be realistic!
Every woman I know has experienced some form of sexual harassment, many have experienced sexual assult and too many have been raped. So really, what point are these men trying to make? Are they opting to put their head in the sand instead of acknowledging that a very real problem exists. Is it because when we acknowledge the existence of a problem we have to accept that change is needed, and change is just too damn hard, even when the outcome of that change will improve the lives of women all around the world. Isn’t that a change worth participating in?
Women are doing all the heavy lifting here, and have been forever. It was only a century ago that women didn’t have voting rights, but if it wasn’t for all those years of protests and activism by women we wouldn’t have that change. We’re in an age of information, possibly information overload but nonetheless the voices of women are there, they can’t be unheard. As men we need to listen, we need to tap into that empathetic part of us and listen. Perhaps to begin with, a lot of us need to look up what empathy means. It’s impossible for a man to have a female lived experience but we can listen, we can learn, and we can definitely change our behaviour. Start by talking to your partner, mum, sister, girlfriends or any female. Ask them what they’ve experienced in terms of sexual harassment in the work place or school, or when they’ve been made to feel uncomfortable in the presence of certain men. The idea is for us to get a better understanding of what women go through, which in tern helps us alter our behaviour as men. What I hear from women is that they often don’t talk about these issues with men because they feel the situation won’t ever change. But that change is within us.
Years ago I was in a place where I didn’t call myself a feminist because of what the word represented to me. I was one of those ‘not all men’ kind of people. I called myself a ‘humanist’, genuinely wanting equality for all but completely seeing it from a males perspective. I’m sharing this because it’s important to acknowledge that as humans we can change, and change is a positive thing, so is being open to new ideas and perspectives, even the challenging ones.
If you want equality for both women and men then you’re a feminist. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s the reality. That’s all a feminist wants, equality. It’s very simple. However, to call yourself a feminist isn’t enough. What any social change needs is active behavioural change. I’m not saying I’m perfect in terms of my approach, far from it. I’d say I’m a feminist with L Plates, however there is always a new perspective to learn and discuss, a change in the way I think, react, behave, interact. To be active is a better alternative than doing nothing and expecting the problem to go away, change simply doesn’t happen that way. What we can do, especially the blokes, is to call poor behaviour out, to have the difficult conversations even when it creates that awkward social silence at the dinner table. Change needs to start somewhere. Let it start with you.
My motivation for writing this isn’t just because I have two amazing daughters, a loving lady partner, an amazing mum, a bunch of amazing female friends and that I want for them to feel safe from the actions of men, of course I want that, we all do. I wrote this because as humans we expect equality, but it’s not there. It’s simply not there and it’s unfair. If you’re a person that doesn’t want that basic human right for all people (equality) then you’d be heartless, and as much as human behaviour is consistently disappointing, I refuse to believe that half the population are totally heartless. I think men are better than that. We can do better.
