🥪 — Arven is hesitant with physical affection at first, just because he’s really not used to it. Like what do you mean… you want to put your arms around him because you love him?? Are you okay??

🥪 — Arven’s always been of the mind that acts of service are the only way to win the love of someone from previous experience, after all working so hard at school and home upkeep always earned praise from his mom/dad even if they weren’t there physically.

🥪 — Given you’re both guys, he’s also kinda shy about the relationship at first. Now, Paldea is one of the most queer-accepting regions you could be in, but it’s still, yknow. Not considered “normal”. People might stare, or say something. He’s no doubt in love with you but the potential negative attention scares the shit out of him.

🥪 — But when he does open up? God, he’s the biggest cuddlebug. He tried physical intimacy once and now he’s addicted.

🥪 — You can hold him, he can hold you, he doesn’t care, just being close is enough. If you’re shorter than him, he’ll usually rest his chin on your head and hum happily. If you’re taller than him, he’ll usually bury his face in your chest.

💚 — If he’s in the mood for contact while you guys are out and about it’ll usually be while you’re sitting, he likes leaning against you and resting his head on your shoulder. I would say that would make the perfect date, taking him on the ferris wheel on a touch-positive day, but who am I kidding, he’d be too fascinated to rest with you then.

💚 — As one could guess by looking at him, he’s LIGHT. You could pick him up and sling him over your shoulder like a sack of potatoes, provided you are tall enough to support all his lankiness.

💚 — You can play with his hair if you want, he’ll undo his ponytail for you, but I can’t imagine it’s actually all that soft. Probably pretty coarse and tangled to be honest, given his upbringing, tending to his hair was never a prerogative. If you can’t stand it being a Rattata’s nest, though, he’ll rather contentedly let you brush it—through he might twitch or squirm a bit, just because the feeling of the brush going through his hair is NOT something he’s used to.

💚 — He spooks you from time to time on his touch-negative days, because you can roll over in bed at any given time and find him just. Staring at you. It’s a stare of pure love, but his eyes do have a kind of naturally vacant look that’s startling at first. Baby you have the haunting thousand-yard-stare of a possessed victorian child

💚 — When he is in the mood for cuddles, he really likes them at night before bed. Specifically right after you shower, because he loves the smell of your shampoo still lingering on your hair. It’s just so completely… you. And he loves that.

💚 — Fall asleep cuddling him and he will become a limp corpse though. An actual ragdoll. Don’t toss and turn too hard or you’ll break him. He’s fragile. And by that I mean if you roll over onto one of his arms he will be stuck there.

💚 — He’ll also chatter on endlessly if you let him, but unlike the sandwich man above, he can be a little harder to understand because he both talks super fast and lays out his words the same as he does his thoughts, which are hard for people other than him to understand. But he knows this, and he’s just happy that you listen, even if you don’t get all of it. And he’s happy to be able to talk, to be heard, to just… say things and not have them carry the weight of the world when he does. Normal conversation is a beautiful treat to him. Oftentimes he’ll talk himself right to sleep, but between being in your arms and getting to speak his mind on all these simple things, he sleeps really easy when he does drift off.

(Over)Analyzing the Cards in Johnny’s Joker Trick (Part 1)

New character, new minute details to overly scrutinize and pretend have meaning!

As of Strive, Johnny’s Joker Trick Instant Kill has been retooled into an Overdrive, and with it, everyone now has a unique card taken from existing card suites. Are they randomly assigned? Or do they fit into some symbolic meaning? Let’s pretend its the latter!

Due to the sheer amount of characters and limited number of face cards, a handful of them overlap. It’s a little surprising that there’s no numeral cards or aces included, as those do have some symbolism based on the numbers, but maybe that in itself is already symbolic, that he views his opponents with relative seriousness, or just that he doesn’t both doing anything less than off the highest caliber.

Also to be noted that a lot of card symbolism is looser than something like tarot and doesn’t necessarily have as much concrete meaning, so I’m not gonna pretend this isn’t anything other than speculation and fiddling around. We’re bringing in some Cartomancy and a lot of the info I found could be a little muddled, if not contradictory

For the sake of cleanliness and coherency, let’s go by hierarchy. I’m also gonna be breaking this into two halves for the sake of length and not having a million character tags

The Joker- solely belongs to Happy Chaos. Batman jokes aside, this makes for an obvious one. Happy is the wild card, the unpredictable element. Though it was originally designed to be a trump card for Euchre, not it performs a variety of functions based on the game being played. It can be the highest-ranking, lowest-ranking, or serve some other technical function in a game. The value and usage of a joker card varies wildly based on the context, which fits Happy well (interestingly, Johnny doesn’t use the Joker card despite the design being based on himself)

Kings

King of Clubs- Shared between Ky Kiske and Zato-1. Contemporary King of Clubs cards are designed after Alexander the Great, which fits well for both the reigning monarch of Illyria and the former puppetmaster of the Assassin’s Guild. A lot of the symbolism I found involved leadership qualities such as intuition and determination. The suit itself is generally associated with nature, thanks to it being interpreted as a clover or as acorns, which may draw in some motifs about growth and change, which may also have some relevance with Ky’s ascent to the throne and subsequent abdication, and the dissolution of the Guild.

King of Diamonds- Held solely by Leo. In contemporary design this one is based of of Caesar, and while the man hopefully has little to do with the tyrannical behavior or assassination, there may be a form of connection in terms of battle prowess. It tends to be shown a little more negatively, either in terms of his domineering power or his sense of haughtiness. There’s also an association with wealth, which while not necessarily specific to Leo, it may fit in him being a powerful king and his association with the color yellow/gold

King of Hearts- Curiously, shared between Potemkin and Johnny. Johnny’s is an obvious choice, he sees himself as a king of romance and chivalry. Potemkin, however, has never been shown in a romantic light, unless it pertains to his patriotic love for his nation. Generally, the card has motifs of kindness, benevolence, and consideration, and both are shown as relatively mature gentleman-types, who care much for others. In an interesting bit of trivia, the King of Hearts is also sometimes called the ‘suicide king’ as it appears to be driving the sword into his own head. Fittingly, both Johnny and Potemkin both die trying to protect others in non-canonical endings, Johnny being murdered by Testament after trying to protect Dizzy in XX and in the drama CD, and Potemkin getting in the way of an attempted assassination in AC

King of Spades- Shared between Chipp and Bedman/Delilah. Design-wise, the most well-known iteration is based off of the biblical King David, known for his act of singlehandedly slaying the goliath with a stone. Though the two of them aren’t on the same end of the moral spectrum, both Chipp and Bedman are characterized by fighting difficult odds for their own sake and the sake of helping others. The spade suit more generally has an association with violence, as it can be interpreted as a blade (in addition to a leaf or a trowel), and both are known for their usage of blades and get into a lot of physical altercations. Interestingly, Bedman is the only King card who hasn’t held any canonical position of authority. Likewise, Chipp’s is self-bestowed

to what degree do you think ozma is projecting/flat out lying when he tells hazel salem wants to destroy remnant and die? does he know or have an inkling of what her real motives are? i would imagine he does given the breaking point between them was over the gods, but i find it interesting the degree to which he obfuscates it

wrt what ozma says to hazel, i think it’s worth keeping in mind that:

ozma believes fear is the fundament of all living beings (“the single quality that is common across all living creatures on this planet […] we so easily underestimate its power”);

ozma is a habitual, nearly compulsive liar;

when ozma tells hazel that salem craves nothing but release and she intends to doom everyone else so that she can finally die, he does so with the explicit purpose of manipulating hazel the way he believes salem manipulates his own inner circle, i.e. he is deliberately setting out to do to hazel what salem did to lionheart.

those are three solid reasons to think ozma is, if not lying through his teeth, then at least distorting the facts and lying by omission just as he did in V5. he also describes salem’s immortality as a proper curse with “as long as this world turns” as the implicit end clause, which we know he knows isn’t the truth. so there’s certainly a degree of deliberate deception and obfuscation going on here, as he’s emphasizing salem’s (notional, presumed) suicidality as much as possible in order to scare hazel out of following her.

i think he does, absolutely, know what salem really wants. not just because of their falling out over the question of whether to do what the god of light told him to do but also because of the fairytale anthology, which is like… paraphrasing,

ozpin’s notes on the grimm child: “the detail about the possessed victims of this grimm having stark white hair and dark eyes isn’t a traditional part of the fairytale, i put it here because the story reminds me of this other story about a witch who lived in the woods :) and also to underscore the futility of expecting evil to be simple and obvious, because in reality evil can lurk behind any face and we’re often the slowest to recognize it in ourselves…”

ozpin’s notes on the infinite man: “no story on remnant has been used as propaganda more often than this one. i think the man was both a hero and a fool and made terrible mistakes that may not be worthy of forgiveness. also truth is not absolute and everyone has the freedom to make their own choices.”

ozpin’s notes on the story of the seasons: “by the way, i have nightmares about a world where everyone had god-given magic. that would be terrible.”

ozpin’s notes on the girl in the tower: “hi this one is propaganda too. it ended in tragedy and the hero turned out to be a villain, but hopefully villains can turn out to be heroes too. also you should question everything, especially if you’re told it’s the absolute truth, because storytellers have absolute control over the narrative.”

ozpin’s notes on the gift of the moon, which is the last tale in the anthology and comes directly after the girl in the tower: “this is an allegory about how humans broke the world, then came together to not only replace a celestial gift from the all-powerful god of light but improved upon it through their own ingenuity. the divide between day and night, light and dark, is the real problem actually”

something something in waves of shame/we’re desperate to make amends… fairytales of remnant reads like a tortured apology to salem that he is desperately trying to contort into condemnation and that really does not make sense to me unless ozma knows damn well what she really hopes to accomplish.

he’s just in a position where everything he’s achieved rests on the precarious narrative that salem exists as the Root Of All Evil. if he doesn’t have that, all he has is the genocidal god he serves and “help me usher in the day of judgment so my god can decide whether we deserve to exist or not” is, erm, not what you’d call an inspiring cause.

H, J, and P?

H - What is your favorite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)?: It really depends on what I’ve heard, but typically I prefer to read the manga if I really care about the story/want to get through it faster! However there are some cases like Land of the Lustrous or Jujutsu Kaisen where the animation is so good that I start with what’s out of the anime, then go back and read it to ensure I don’t miss any details. Or alternatively, I go to the anime if I just want it as a background story while I draw. I’ve been doing that with Attack on Titan recently, it was a lot better than I anticipated so I presume the general negative opinion I’ve heard derived from its overpopularity not the quality itself? Or maybe it gets really problematic or something, haven’t finished it yet. As for Movies Vs. Books it’s a similar situation, but I prefer books more generally.

J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until tumblr: Honestly, I’ve been introduced to a good portion of my recent fandoms by a friend of mine first, and then convinced to actually start them by tumblr art/my mutuals (mostly Quinn) so if I had to think of something that was genuinely introduced to me here… Good Omens? Haven’t watched it but I see them on my dash constantly. Oh also Witch Hat Atelier!

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas): Tokyo Ghoul obviously,

maybe an AU where all the folks pulling strings and playing king (Arima, Kaneki, Furuta, Eto) somehow end up in a very uneasy alliance to take down V for good. They argue over the ultimate goal constantly, they all hate at least two of the others, nothing’s really going well but they do get stuff done… somewhat, but they hate each other’s methods and tend to end up fighting after ever decision, and very rarely consulting each other before. The only thing keeping them united is a common goal and wanting to die.

AU where Haise is sent with the Quinx to deal with Noro instead of capturing Shuu on the roof. Shirazu doesn’t die, neither does Kanae (unless Eto decides to dispose of them?) but also, Haise never stops dreaming. But, a King is needed anyways and thus he ends up tentatively playing the role despite shironeki continuing to insist he be let out. I thought this one up right now and I haven’t considered consequences to this yet, but I like it as a concept.

Don’t think I’m inventing this but, AU where someone, legitimately anyone, comes to rescue Kaneki in time, hopefully helping him steer away from the mindset of “No one is able to help me”

AU where Juuzou and Hanbee are a little too effective and end up actually killing Kaneki (or injuring him to the point where he’s unable to dragon-ify even after taking a bite out of Hajime, leaving him only with the strength to flee) effectively throwing a wrench in everyone’s plans.

Not an AU but do you ever think about the fact that every single crucial event in Tokyo Ghoul wouldn’t have happened if Tsuneyoshi was just actually a good dad.

AU where everyone has actually decent parents (This one’s a joke but I actually cannot conceive of it.)

AU were Hide, Kimi, or someone else is the person to get Ghoul’d instead of Kaneki and the consequences thereof.

Very self-indulgent AU where Koori gets kidnapped by Aogiri instead of/in addition to Amon or Takizawa (mostly just writing this here because I’d like to draw it maybe, thematically I’m not really even sure it would work for him to begin with, but I like drawing theoretical ghouls.)

Also not really inventing this but I’d also like to draw a Pokémon AU some time.

Fic: my love is all mine

Pairing: Gong Shangjue x Gong Yuanzhi

A note arrives with the serving of his lunch that Shangjue does not immediately pay heed to. There’s a mountain of paperwork that he needs to get through, and a tonne of logistics to sort through to rebuild and weed through what has been rotting in the foundations of the family.

Admittedly, he hasn’t been the best at keeping Yuanzhi company lately.

Most days he wakes when Yuanzhi is still asleep, falls into an exhausted fuelled dreamless sleep when he had already fallen asleep. Didi doesn’t complain in the scant moments they have to share a quick meal together before yet another pressing demand calls for his attention. He smiles and merely makes sure that Shangjue has enough to eat and to drink before he is whisked off, supporting him quietly from the side.

Shangjue knows better than to believe that he isn’t affected by the lack of quality time.

It’s also this train of thought that keeps him going. Sifting through the work piling up on his desk so that he can carve out a week’s worth of peace. He plans to dump whatever menial, low-priority tasks on Gong Ziyu’s desk, telling them to not send for either him or Yuanzhi unless the valley itself is on fire.

Then, he is going to take bring Yuanzhi to hopefully hide out in some secluded hut in the back hill (of which, there are many and not all are known to even the Sword Wielder) for a minimum of a week before he would even entertain the idea of looking at another document.

What they’ll do there will be between them, the heavens and the earth, and no one else.

Just as he is idly drawing up a mental list of Yuanzhi's favourite foods, Gong Ziyu sweeps into his study, robes billowing with his harried movements. Before he can even ask him what he is here for, the Sword Wielder holds up a familiar-looking note.

Sealed with blood-red wax and unfurling like a folded lotus, he reads the words, 'The valley gates at Xu Shi* or they die' with a piece of Yuanzhi's hair ornament nestled in the middle.

"I received mine half a shichen* ago. I'm assuming yours came around the same time." Gong Ziyu says just as Gong Zishang sweeps into his study bordering on a manic hysteria.

Cold rage courses through his veins, burning through the haze of fear and anguish like a summer fire. How dare they touch what is his?

"Calm down," Gong Ziyu advises, even as he is fiddling with what looks like one of Yun Weishan's earrings. Wrapping a cool hand around his wrist, he insists. "You'll do him no good if you intend to barge in head first with your sword swinging. Besides, he is more than capable of handling himself."

"We need a plan of attack. Or at least a semblance of one." Gong ZIshang interjects, unfurling her hand to show them a piece of Jin Fan's belt ornament.

The rage clawing at the back of his mind calms a little at the sight of them standing in front of him with determination in their eyes. Breathing in deep, he closes his eyes. Nodding perfunctorily, he manages to grit out. "What do you have in mind?"

Shangjue goes alone to the gates of Gong Valley.

Keeping a keen eye on the surrounding landscape; every rustle of the leaves in the trees, every shifting of the night air, every moment the clouds hide away the moonlight, he waits.

"Good evening, Lord Jue."

In the cover of the darkness, he spies the way the shadows flicker in the shape of a body. Calming himself, he calls out. "Where is he?"

The shadow slithers in the darkness.

"I'm surprised that you'd come alone. One would have thought the Gong family's Sword Wielder would have lived up to his romantic reputation of being deeply in love with his wife."

Gripping the scabbard of his sword, Shang Jue seethes. "Where is he?"

"We have him, don't you worry." The man in the darkness laughs. "Don't be so hasty, we haven't even gotten to what we want from you yet."

Shangjue listens to the speech, waiting out the sounds of goading amusement. Throwing out his senses until he hears the dull hoot of an owl that is not native to the valley.

At that, he relaxes.

"Good luck with that. My brother is not known for his patience. If nothing else, I should thank you. He's been rather restless lately and I appreciate you giving him a good workout."

The shadow stills. Shifting, moving in the darkness, it isn't long until the sounds of horrified screaming carry through the thick night air. The clouds in the sky clear and silvery moonlight wash through the clearing.

Unsheathing his sword, Shangjue grins, bloodthirsty and sharp. "Your only mistake here is that you took the ones the Gong family holds dear." Falling into an attacking stance, he chuckles. "You can atone for this mistake in the Underworld."

"B-but we have them! We caught them!"

"Oh," Shangjue clicks his tongue. Slowing down his breath, he moves into a strike. "You don't have them. They have you."

It takes only a few moves to tire his opponent out enough that he leaves him an opening to bury his blade in. Useless. How he ever thought he could walk out of Gong valley in one piece is beyond him. Right before he slices through, Shangjue leans in, savouring the terror in the other man's eyes. "You should have never touched what is mine."

"Tsk, I missed all the fun."

The man's body crumples to the ground as the clearing fills up with members of the family. Shangjue turns and has to hold himself up by willpower alone when he sees Yuanzhi, cheeks blood-streaked but otherwise unhurt to his eyes, push forth.

Relief fills his lungs. Uncaring of how many eyes are watching, he exhales, not bothering to halt the long strides he takes to wrap Yuanzhi up in a hug. Breathing in deep, he lets his didi hold him.

"Ge, I'm ok. I'm alright."

"Mm."

Letting himself bask in the way Yuanzhi's whispers tickle against his jaw, he unhooks the plaque of his authority from his belt. Throwing it at Gong Ziyu, he pulls back to sheath his bloodstained blade. Before the Sword Wielder can say a word, Shangjue pulls his didi into his arms in a bridal carry.

"I'm taking a break. Don't look for us for a week."

Gong Ziyu stutters, mouth gaping around a protest before Yun Weishan peaceably settles him with a hand to his elbow.

Without a look back, he moves into a light-footed jump, skimming on the treetops until they are out of sight. Shangjue couldn't care less. They'll be taking their vacation a little early.

Is there anything we can do to help if we don’t have any money? Like any organizations we can donate old clothes to? Or anything like that.

Yes, I am in Canada. It’s a good thing for having access to the universal healthcare. But ambulance and meds aren’t covered.

You are bringing a very interesting question here. There are many local organizations that takes donations for clothes, and food banks. Some are local organizations, some are national. They will put in priority kids and families, which makes some sense, but that means they are not going to help me.

In my case, I am ok for food, clothes, home and basics. Where I can cut is on quality of diapers that I need, cut some meds that will not kill me when I will stop them, reduce to the minimum my physical therapies, put a cross on everything that will cost money (fun, movies, Christmas, birthdays, dentist, optometrist, everything not essential at all.).

My stock of diapers is getting low, so, diaper donations can be an option eventually. I am working on finding ways to get some financial help from government, local donation centers, my city, any hidden disability programs that could exist, bank loan, family and relatives, also my special ed therapists. It seems like there is no way to maintain my physical therapies without paying them from my pocket. It’s literally a crack in our system. If I was still under 18, there would have been no problem at all to get help through many organizations and government, and universal healthcare system itself. I sold what I could, I have mid term to long term solutions brewing, but no short term ones. I need to fill the upcoming gap that will happen this fall until mid term solution take place.

If anyone have any good ideas, or might know any association who helps disabled adults in distress like I am, please don’t hesitate to post it here, or PM me. In worst case, I feel totally ridiculous to say that, but I believe it’s true that if a lot of my friends and followers could give one dollar, at the end, that will make a big difference for me! I will never forget ppls who already helped me! It takes critical situations to understand what this is all about. And the day my friends will need help, I’ll be there to help the best I can. In fact, I have helped my friends and my parents and family a lot when they needed it and for many years already!

Everytime I went to pick up my father at the hospital for heart attack, surgeries, any followups he needs to be accompanied, He always tells me he will pay my gas and parking. I never accepted any money from him, because for the number of times he and mom were there to get me in and out of hospital and specialists, I believe it’s my turn to take care of them and not worry about money.

I even bought a cheap car and rented an apartment where one of my friend in psychological distress would rather die than getting rid of his 2 dogs because he couldn’t find any places that were accepting his 2 dogs. He never paid me back, and I am very proud he is now happy, much better, and he helped moving 2 times.

I have helped another abdl moving from his shitty apartment into a much better place, and I did not charge anything. What matters is well-being of my friends, and he needed a bit of help to fill the gap btw the time he gets his 1st pay check and the deposit fee at his new apartment. It reminds me he didn’t refund me, and I wasn’t upset because he did work and be able to pay his bills. He doesn’t talk to me anymore, but I see him online here still, and I guess that’s fine if he doesn’t want to talk to me. I am glad I could have helped him the best I could, even if my own budget was not that great at that time.

Everyone is shitting bricks with that pandemic, and inflation. Well, not everyone, but a lot of us are struggling. I am asking money myself, while I donated 2$ to CHU Ste-Justine children hospital earlier this week, because my 2$ times thousands of people thinking the same way will definitely help them more than me, an adult with autism, and several health issues, who is still alive today, thinking that these kids need help even more than I do.

All that said, I am pro active right now, and I am still helping others when it’s possible. I deal with every challenge God is sending me. Sometimes it’s hard, sometimes it’s frustrating, but I have hope that even ppls who follow me with no interest of getting to know me or talk to me can understand my situation, and am very open to intelligent alternatives to money if they are willing to help. But please, no disrespectful or stupid idea like that guy who wanted me to prostitute myself to get an easy 20 bucks from him because he wanted something in return.😑 Really? Sharing thousands of pictures and videos for free wasn’t already enough? He made me upset, I was sad, and I had to block this guy who started to be harassing me. I don’t deserve this, nobody does, and especially when it’s a serious situation here for me. I am more than just a random dude in diapers! I am a great hearted person with multiple talents and narrowed interests who is always here to listen to everyone, and answer the best I can and help .

what is your opinion on the illyrian poc debate? on one hand, it’s amazing to get some diversity in this series. annoying that ofc the one poc group of people in the series is misogynistic and abuses women but it’s still poc?

on the other hand, illyrians are described as tan. tamlin was described as tan and he was a whole ass white man. i’m not sure if, for me, quick remarks about their golden tan skin is enough to give sjm applause for poc characters in her books. it’s amazing to see fans call out artists that draw the bat boys as white but at the same time, sjm literally described them as ‘tan’ and i feel like this whole debate of whitewashing the illyrians is just giving sjm credit for poc representation when she .. doesn’t have enough of it

Hm, I guess I don't know what the debate is! I am more aware of Stranger Things discourse atm 😂

SJM says that Illyrians are a race. They've been described as being different than High Fae. We now know that the Asteri created them. It's pretty clear that they are not like other fae. Race =/= POC, but they've been described as having darker skin tones, and I think the more important thing is actually their otherness. SJM has Othered the hell out of the Illyrians.

I see the things that sjm wrote and then the way that we interact with what she wrote as being connected but not necessarily the same thing, if that makes sense.

So like sjm says that Illyrians are tan, they are a race, they are also super misogynistic etc. That is NOT a positive look for her, it's not something that anyone is claiming as a good thing but is actually pretty racist. It's a group of people who have been written as a separate race, as tan, but she also slapped them with this "backwards", "brutish" characterization. And then meanwhile she doesn't follow through on that because most Illyrians that we know are actually good people (Emerie, Cassian, Az, Balthazar, Rhys, Rhys's mom) which makes me wonder why she's emphasizing their negative qualities so much? Her villains suck, she just does not put much thought into why a villain or even an antagonist does what they do. So like with the Illyrians, they just *are* that way for no reason, but then when she writes them as named characters that we get to know, they aren't like that at all... anyway.

But to me it seems like the fandom is trying to embrace the positive aspects of what she created, so that's the flip side of the "she created a thing, here is how we interact with it" coin. I've never seen anyone be like "yeah, those Illyrian misogynists have the right idea so here is my 50k fanfic about it!" It's always "hey these are POC and should be depicted as such", and the way I see them talked about in fan works is also generally positive.

So... based on what I've seen, the fandom has embraced the positives of what she wrote, while discarding the crap. We are aware that it's crap - I and many others have written multiple times about how her creation/depiction of Illyrians is problematic at best, racist at worst. We know that. But that's not how we then proceed to think of them in the fandom, and so when people say "hey this art is whitewashed", that's fans who are actively trying to combat something problematic.

Side note, but any argument that says "well this is how it is in the book so I have to accept that and cannot think critically about *why* it was done that way" is.... well. Not my favorite.

To me that's part of being in a fandom anyway, like I've written fanfic where Nehemia doesn't die because that was crap and I don't have to accept that as gospel when it comes to me and the fandom.

Sorry this is longish, I just don't know the full context of the debate so hopefully this was somewhat useful! I just know that the depiction of Illyrians has always been acknowledged as problematic (at least in my corner of the fandom it has been) but that's on SJM, not the fandom. Like if I decided in my fanfic to keep Nehemia alive or to portray Illyrians as nuanced and misunderstood and complex, then that's me leaving behind the parts I don't like because I am aware it's... not good.

At the beginning of his seventh year, James Potter of all people, became Head Boy.  He had matured a bit, was a lot more serious and was noticing that the world was becoming worse. He still got in quite a bit of trouble, but he also took being Head Boy serious. That didn’t mean that he didn’t use it to his advantage, though.

Before leaving Hogwarts, James was recruited by Dumbledore, to take part in the Order of the Phoenix, a group that would fight against Voldemort and his followers to hopefully put a stop to the Wizarding War. It was something that was dangerous, but if anyone could handle it, he could.

James and Lily are hidden away, while she was pregnant, because their son may be part of the prophecy, and what Voldemort is after. Only the secret keeper knows where to find them, which will be their undoing.

James Potter was born On March 27, 1960, to Fleamont and Euphemia Potter. Although they were older parents, they both still actively worked as aurors for the Ministry of Magic. Due to the fact that they spent the first few years busy with work, James was mostly raised by their house elf. They didn’t ignore their son though. They loved him as much as two parents could, showering him with all sorts of gifts and a lavish lifestyle, being that they were wealthy. When James turned 11, he didn’t wonder if his acceptance letter to Hogwarts would come. He knew that it would. He also was confident that he would be sorted into Gryffindor. His parents were both Gryffindor and James had every quality that is frequently found in Gryffindors. He was brave, almost to the point of being reckless and had the many injuries from his many adventures to prove it. James Potter was right, and off to Hogwarts he went. On the train, he befriended Sirius Black, and the two boys took an instant dislike for Severus Snape, which would grow throughout the years. This caused him to butt heads with Lily Evans, although there was something about her that even 11 year old James Potter couldn't help but be intrigued by. As predicted, he was sorted into Gryffindor, and the two boys quickly grew attached at the hip and befriended Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. Early in second year, James had been noticing more and more that Remus continued to disappear. After grabbing his invisibility cloak that his father gave him before leaving for Hogwarts, he followed him out and that was when James discovered that Remus had a secret: He was a werewolf. James had been stunned and didn’t know how to handle it, in the least. But the one thing that he did know was that Remus was his friend. After not speaking of it to anyone, he had spent the next day in the library and while Remus was still recovering, James went to Sirius and Peter with an idea. They would become animagi and do what they could to help protect Remus during his transformations. James knew that transfigurations was something that they needed to excel in and he was at the top of their year already. When he went to Remus, Remus was determined that he didn’t need anyone to help him but James wasn’t convinced. He wanted to help his friend and wasn’t going to take no for an answer. As the Marauders continued to rise in popularity and pranks, which did include James and Sirius bullying people, particularly Snape, they worked hard and finally becami animagi, and did what they could to help Remus. As James’ popularity grew, his ego continued to grow and it didn’t help that he excelled at everything that he did. He quickly rose to be one of the best Quidditch Chasers Hogwarts had ever seen and impressed girls in all directions, except for the one he wanted to impress: Lily Evans. James hatred for Snape continued to grow, the more Lily continued to reject him and James and Sirius took great pleasure in making the boy suffer. It wasn’t long until James was learning to turn Snape’s hexes against him and he took great pleasure in it, even if he continued to ask Lily to go out with him and she continued to reject him. But it all came to a head in the spring of their fifth year. James had gathered his fellow Gryffindors out at the Lake, and as Sirius encouraged it, James hung Snape upside down by his trousers, quite enjoying the boy’s public humiliation. A part of his arrogance faltered when Lily defended Snape and he released the hex on him, as he fell to the ground. James was horrified when Snape called Lily a horrible name, and as much as he wanted to kill him for what he had done to her, he knew that part of that was on him, and it caused him for the first time to consider his actions. The summer before their sixth year was one that James couldn’t forget. On a particularly dark night when James was still grounded for the incident at the Lake with Snape, there was a banging on their door. As his mum answered it, he saw his best friend on the other side. But this wasn’t the arrogant Sirius that mirrored James’ ways. He was broken and James heart broke for his friend, moving to hug him and from that day on, James Potter and Sirius Black were brothers. Sirius was part of the family and had found a new home. Although most people didn’t become Captain of the Quidditch team until seventh year, James was made Captain at the start of his sixth year. As sixth year unfolded, James continued to ask Lily out and she continued to reject him. He still spent his time hexing Snape when he could, partly because he was still mad that he had hurt Lily the way he had. But one night during Remus’ transformation, Sirius took it too far and lured Snape to the Weeping Willow, so that Remus could get rid of him once and for all, while a werewolf. James found out about the plan and even though he hated Snape more than he hated anyone, he stopped it and at the last minute, he saved his life. James continued to spend time with girls from all directions, notably Emma Vanity and Glenda Chittock. But not long before sixth year ended, he and Lily wound up sharing a heated snog in the dark corridors, and Jame knew then that no other girl would compare to her, and broke it off with both girls. That summer was one that changed his life completely. One day an owl arrived from Dumbledore, and he had been named Head Boy. After pulling Sirius off the floor from his laughing, James wondered what the hell Dumbledore was thinking. But, his mother, who had grown rather ill had pulled him into her room late that night and told him this was a chance to change, and that he needed to deflate his head. But, the next few days were ones that James Potter hadn't seen coming. His parents had died, only a few days apart. He was broken. He only confided in Lily Evans, who as she helped him through it and they served as Heads, they grew closer, and eventually, after them not labeling their newfound intimacy, he finally got her to agree to be his girlfriend. He really started to pull it together but the more he pulled it together, the more he started to see that he was growing up and starting to see that the wizarding world was getting darker and finding less joy in the recklessness he once had. Dumbledore noticed it too and right before Christmas, he approached James about getting involved with a new project, a resistance to fight Voldemort and his followers. James signed up eagerly and became the first student to be recruited into the Order of the Phoenix. Along with the Aurors planted at Hogwarts, James helped recruit people that could help, and backed the Order financially. He even found himself proposing to Lily before leaving, and helped lead Gryffindor to victory in the Quidditch Final. James Potter left Hogwarts how he wanted to: popular and a Quidditch Star. Once out in the real world, it became quite clear that this war threatened to destroy them all. James resolution to help fight and end this war was stronger than ever. He tried to still find things to take lightly, but it got harder, the more blood that was spilled. It became a real question, whether, any of this was going to break James Potter once and for all, or if he will rise up and be the fighter that he was likely born to be. Lily was often his rock and them marrying was something that managed to be something happy in their lives. As time went on, things just continued to get worst. Just when James and Lily thought that nothing could become more complicated, Lily became pregnant. While they were overjoyed at this development, they both knew that it was frightening. It became even more frightening when their child became a part of a prophecy. Though they went into hiding, they were betrayed, and Voldemort came to kill Harry. James tried to fend him off, wanting to give Lily and Harry time. He knew he would be killed, and he was right. He died protecting his family.

honestly yeah pretty much!!! i wrote a whole segment of worldbuilding for cyberpunk au today here’s that!

“A certain someone eating his christmas pie at six o clock. Looking for fresh meat, I’ve heard.”

Mark laughs and keeps his eyes at his drink in front of him. “You know me well enough. I’m not getting involved with his lot.”

DC pours a shot for himself, something pale. He backs it and slides the glass to the sink, watches closely as it nearly topples over. It stands on the edge and waits for the finger to push that never comes, and carries on in limbo.

“He’s got ambition.”

“Is ambition enough?”

DC hums, lips together as though thinking about it. He’s not, obviously. “I think it’s enough for you. You look tired.”

He does, but what DC means is Mark looks skint. He just blinks at the statement. “You and Alonso bickering again?” Mark blinks again, takes a big swig of his pint as if swallowing will drown out the sound of David’s gossip. “Ah, okay. You’re like teenagers. I’m telling you, move out, move on.”

Mark snorts, then. “You see any real estate going cheap around here? Anyway, we’re fine. Just a spat.” DC mouths ‘spat’ and Mark gives him the v’s, knowing exactly what he’s implying. That he’s right in every which way.

“Put it on my tab.”

“You don’t have a tab.”

Mark slides DC two credits, the harsh scrape of metal on metal, watches him closely to make sure he pockets it. Downs the last dregs of his drinks, and then stands up. “I’ll see you later.”

When he turns to leave, he does see little Christian Horner, sat in his corner. Up and coming. DC told him, months ago, how he’d delivered arms to DC’s boys. That he can’t be trusted but he could be paid. DC is full of useful information like this, if you prise it out of him with a screwdriver and elbow grease.

He’s deep in conversation with another man, one Mark can’t recognise from the back. He’s thin, bald. Authoritative in the way he commands the conversation, rather than his demeanor. Mark likes bosses like him more. It’s a shame that Christian has neither of the qualities, some mid ground semi-professional that loiters around here with the rest of the basement dwellers.

yes!!! sebmark have a playlist (though it’s outdated (i listened to it too much)). bad for business has a playlist, good men die too as well but cyberpunk doesn’t currently :/

i kind of hate phonk (nothing wrong w the genre i just over listened in 2021) which is really the only cyberpunk feel that spotify has given me. i am trying to be more creative in that regard tho. if anyone is invested in cyberpunk au listen to GOLDWING billie eilish! that’s my starting point for my new playlist

16. At what point in the process do you come up with titles?

i am TERRIBLE at titles. usually it’s me after editing and scrambling for lyrics or anything relevant. if there’s a specific song/vibe to go with it i usually then already have the title (bad for business, crush, thoroughfare, still here like a cheap threat) but that is VERY rare in terms of WIPS i’ve started

The Slow Fashion Movement and the Exploitation of Thrifting

With the increased speed of fashion trend cycles and the current popularity of fast fashion sites like Shein, slow fashion is needed now more than ever. Put most simply, the slow fashion movement is the antithesis to fast fashion. It covers the production of sustainable and long-lasting clothing outside of trend cycles and production speed (Domingos, Mariana, Vera Teixeira Vale, and Silvia Faria, 2022). Over time, customers have become more aware of the impacts of fast fashion, leading to more sustainable outlets for clothes shopping. One of these outlets is thrifting, which for a while has been a cheap way to find local, quality second-hand clothing for many. However, the popularity of thrifting doesn’t come without its downsides.

Because of the sudden increase in thrifting subcultures, as of 2023 thrifting is currently seen as something trendy and cool rather than a life choice. Of course, this has resulted in the gentrification of thrifting, where stores are forced to raise prices to cater towards an upper-class audience that values being on trend over being actually sustainable (Lawless, 2022) Thrifting has actually become similar to fast fashion, in the way people will buy ‘hauls’ of clothing they don’t need only because they were ‘on trend’ and inexpensive.

The popularity of thrifting has also led to a rise in resale culture. People have recently begun to buy out thrift stores and resell their halts at a higher price online for personal profit. The reselling ‘job’ has been praised as a quick and easy way to make money, whilst conveniently leaving out the damage it does to less fortunate groups. Further environmental impacts include the shipping costs needed to send these items to their buyers, which aren’t a problem when it comes to thrift shops. (Kueser, 2022)

Overall, it’s easy to see how the trendiness of thrifting has taken affordable clothes away from the impoverished or environmentally-conscious people that it used to be for. Knowing how trends work, thrifting 'hype' will die down eventually, leaving those who'll hopefully thrift ethically.

If daddy issues had a poster child, it would be Salomé. Daughter and heiress of the Blake family, her education was as spoiled as it was cold and strict. Her father, a cruel man, had always shown love in his own heartless way. Very young, she realised that being his favorite earned her more favors but also more violence, and she quickly developed a ruthless survival instinct, to the point of turning her back on her siblings. Survival of the fittest, right? And yet, despite her playing her cards right, and ending up as legal heiress to her father’s empire, it only protected to a certain point.

Years have passed, she is now a wealthy and incredibly manipulative young woman. She loves as sporadically as she cares, and her kindness is always interested and never free. She’s not heartless, but she sure plays her part right. It’s now clear to her that there is only one way for her to be truly free, and hopefully one day happy.

Her father has to die. It’s the most logical solution to a very complicated problem.

𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐂𝐘 𝐉𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐒𝐎𝐍 𝐀𝐔

Salomé is a daughter of Aphrodite. Unfortunately, her mother’s terrible taste in men seemed to influence her decision yet again, and Salomé’s father turned out to be an angry, violent man. After years of abuse, she was found by a satyr, and led to camp. Salomé was 11. Aphrodite having found out about the abuse, sired Salomé her first night at camp, out of guilt.

She is still heiress of the Blake fortune, and sometimes does visit her family, but she is a year round camper. It’s were she feels safe, away from her father. Not that she’d ever say that out loud. She is 16 at the time of the AU, and is head counselor of the Aphrodite cabin. 

𝐇𝐎𝐆𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐒 𝐀𝐔

Salomé Blake is the daughter of a powerful Diplomat working at the Ministry of Magic. She was sorted into Slytherin, which is fitting considering how ambitious and manipulative she is. Being her father’s favorite child in a family of three kids, she’s been spoiled rotten her whole life. Honestly? She doesn’t have many redeeming qualities.

Imagine Mean Girls at Hogwarts and you get a pretty good idea of Salomé. She acts like a princess, expects to be treated like such, and is often surrounded by her very own clique of girls. She has a lot of “friends” but doesn’t create meaningful bonds easily. She likes to surround herself with people who are useful to her. It’s easy to see her and imagine she’s just shallow and stupid, but she’s in fact a very serious and hardworking student. Still, she enjoys the idea of being underestimated and does nothing to break her reputation of silly girl.

Her favorite classes are defense against the dark arts and potions. Her father is powerful and influential, and often works with Voldemort. However, he doesn’t believe in pure blood supremacy, and has never joined the Death Eaters. It’s all just business for him. Like her dad, Salomé doesn’t care about the pure blood/muggle born discourse. She basically despises everyone no matter the purity of their blood, which is? Good I guess?

So I got a new job, a new opportunity. At the same time, my business just had its kick-off 3 months ago. Basically, everything makes me feel vulnerable, can’t get a grip of everything I’ve been doing lately. Also! I just remembered that tomorrow is my visa appointment, and somehow not everything has been sorted out. So let’s make a worry list.

1. I worry my new boss and my new colleagues don’t like me and my personality. Let’s dig a lil deeper, so what? Does it affect your life. Actually yes. But can you control it? Not really, because if you hold yourself too much, you won’t enjoy your job. But for the sake of the money only, does your happiness means a lot? You can just take the money, and after that you can enjoy yourself. Hmm okay, new strategy: make your boss and colleague love you not because or your personality, but because the quality of your job, since I got a a feeling the colleagues here are not that “available outside the office”, so you just need to show up and deliver your best effort to do your job.

2. I worry this month big campaign won’t hit that big, both for passion business and also my main job. It’s just everything somehow doesn’t work according to plan lately, but it happens because of the slowing down economy. But, if you really think about it, does the target set really matter? Your whole career life you’ve been having a target driven kind of job, but it actually doesn’t affect much on anything. It’s just a target set, not really a live or die situation kind of thing. Like so what if your business doesn’t achieve the target this month, you can still try next month to give your best. You have no investor whatsover in the first place. Second, so what if the target set for your main job is not achieved, well the target set based on last year performance, it doesn’t reflect on current situation with the inflation and post pandemic situation anyway. And, you’ve just started, you’ll be okay as long you take care the things you’ve asked to. You’ll be okay, you’ll still live. Life goes on.

3. My hair is a bit too orange-y. But so what. It’s not that you want to meet someone that you need to be pretty to, it’s not a wedding as well, a once in a lifetime thing. But it’s a first impression thing, still a once in a lifetime thing lol. But, it’s more on the quality of the job, not the prettiness of the look. It’s okay. You’ll be fine.

4. Visa. Appointment tomorrow. Not sure everything has been taken care of. Hopefully everything will be just fine and got approved.

5. Money. I need to pay the annual apt rent in next month. Also the euro trip in next month. Will my double salary cover it? Let’s count it first. But anyway, I still have him. I’ll be okay even if the next month salary can’t cover everything lol

6. I feel uncool lately. I feel fat. I feel sad. I feel that I try too hard. I feel I’m not effortless enough lately. I need to control my appetite for sure, or just do the portion diet thing if it turns too hard for me. I also think that I post too much. It’s just that I’m bored. Maybe I need to get out of the internet for awhile? Only sign in my business account? Maybe yes, after the big campaign

Past Lives, Soul Planning and other theories

Sociology 101 + Spirituality = “Soulciology 909”

Love and respect everyone, be kind, do good. This message goes deeper than typical common sense. It goes beyond the sociological reasons of many people being disadvantaged in society and helping one another for survival and happiness and evolution. It goes deeper than religion “love thy neighbor,” and it even goes deeper than the New Age concept of “We are all One.” Why?

 If the afterlife is real, as psychic Matt Fraser claims, and thus reincarnation is real, then it is safe to assume that each and every one of us has experienced unique individual lives of all kinds of people and animals, a.k.a. our past selves and our future selves. Every religion, every culture, male, female, black, white, Asian, African, European, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Native American, Australian, Chinese, Japanese, Egyptian, Incan, Celtic, Norse, Greek, Roman, tribal, rich, poor, disabled, addicts, master, slave, farmer, artist, ruler, business, chefs, humanitarians, serial killers, all animal kinds, plant kinds and yes even aliens…we’ve probably experienced all of them. (Though unlike New Age theories, I wouldn’t say we are Starseeds because being aliens would only be a slim part of our infinite lives, which I theorize have mostly been as humans on Earth) The truth is, no one knows (except God, a few advanced genuine psychics and our higher selves) how many past lives we’ve had nor where our souls have been (if they even exist, hopefully assuming they get purified between cycles). It is true that everyone is connected…but we all have our individual soul journeys that no one else will ever experience. We are all in this together, we all will achieve enlightenment in our own time and ways… and our souls are so complex, then there is no logical point to compare ourselves with others in any world. Michael Newton’s Journey of Souls (in my opinion) had it wrong: comparing how evolved we are, our auras and kindness, how many past lives we’ve had (it doesn’t matter how many lives we’ve lived, it depends on the quality of our lives and the lessons learned from each life. “Old” and “New” Souls is a social construct based on the necessity of time for us humans, souls don’t age.) versus other souls will only discourage us from moving forward. We must love and care for each other and people of all races and backgrounds as much as we can…because if we discriminate against people who are different…we are at the deepest level, discriminating against our very selves and souls.

   Going off of the New Age derogatory concept of “our souls planned every aspect of our lives/we chose to experience the struggles in our lives” devalues experiences of current humans with disabilities (who are not “chosen ones” or “Lightworkers” like New Age says, because all of us are “chosen ones” for different reasons – we are all here to learn.) The nature/nurture question is, do we plan our lives or is it all up to fate?

 Fraser’s Fate-Freewill Theory:

 Psychic Matt Fraser says it’s a combination of both…which seems to make the most sense. There are many things that we have absolutely no control over, like accidents, diseases, disabilities, the weather, attacks, the things that we are born with, etc.  Many people suffer and die early for no reason. However, all of us do have free-will and we can control how we react to the good and bad in our lives. Even though we all go through certain events, “points of fate” like school (for most of us), jobs, illness, moving, child-care, all the emotions and death, which are universal, we can choose how we navigate between the milestones in our lives. Matt also explains that souls on the other side cannot say when people are going to die because they only know what is scheduled to happen in the future…which can change at any time. (That’s why genuine psychics don’t bluntly say X will happen to you, they know that nothing is set in stone but can advise clients to be cautious due to the event that will most likely happen).

Since those who have passed on cannot know the complete future like God can, it’s also likely that the same process occurs when our souls choose our human lives. We choose our personality and traits and we choose our parents but not for their human traits...but who they really are as free souls. We know their souls and likely have incarnated with them before as part of our soul family. But we know that for every family we are born in, human thoughts are unpredictable. If we had abusive parents or got raped by our lover, we did not plan that to happen, it was the flawed choices of the humans. But our souls only see the potential of the human parent/lover/child souls to do good and help with personal evolution. I theorize that souls are not shown their complete future of their human lives…only their goals and a blueprint of what it is likely to happen. (Ex. “My goal is to love my family, stand up for the underdog, get closer to God and embrace the unknown”). (I will live with father X and mother Y in Z state in the U.S., likely to experience poverty, hard work, etc. but nothing is permanent.”) (Because if a soul knew their parents would be abusive or that they would die in a crash, the soul wouldn’t want to live a mortal life, thus evolve.) It’s like a contract “These human parents have traits of sternness, courage, etc. and may or may not turn out to be good or bad, do you agree to the risks?” which applies to every soul. That’s why there is the purposeful ambiguity in the life planning stages…because souls are always changing…and births and deaths will always be unknown to us at first. And we also have our memories erased of our past lives and our lives in Heaven so we can focus on one lifetime at a time, because God knows that is best for us…and God knows that if the afterlife is real, we will all find out the answers to life, the universe, and everything!

Christmas Movies Ranked by How Anti-Capitalist They Are

It’s a Wonderful Life

Movies that make you want to pick a fight with the 1% and also weep with joy. Absolutely a classic and anti-capitalist at its very core. Will convince you we need to start oppressing landlords again.

Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath? Anyway, my father didn't think so. People were human beings to him. But to you, a warped, frustrated old man, they're cattle.”

SAY THAT!!! George Bailey said fuck landlords, all my homies hate landlords, they have NO rights. Local man believes poor people are human, dedicates his life to helping them, and in his time of the need literally the whole town comes together to support him and his family. Class solidarity ftw!

Home Alone

Soundtrack goes hard, the wacky hijinks even harder. 

Loses points because the bandits had a prime opportunity to seize and redistribute some of the wealth from this ritzy Chicago neighborhood and instead they focus their energy on trying to kill an 8-year-old who outsmarts them at every turn.

Elf

A family favorite in our house. Touches on the overworking and mistreatment of employees through Greenway Press – Walter forced to choose between being with his family on Christmas Eve or losing his job, it’s implied Deb has a pet grooming business on the side to makes ends meet despite being a receptionist at a NY publishing company, etc.

Honestly most of the points come from Jonie’s underrated yet highly relatable storyline. She works in retail, exhausted and cynical towards the high-paced Christmas season which gives her little to no relief or reward, since she’s surviving on ramen noodles and using the employee showers because her water was cut off. Not expanded on enough to be considered a true Marxist piece but the effort is appreciated.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Although the meme is correct in that Rudolph’s red nose becomes desirable only once it proves to be useful, it does get points for exposing the harmful nature of forced conformity and those alienated by these capitalist ideals -- Rudolph, Hermie, the island of misfit toys -- are given a place to belong despite the perceived “flaws” that before made them undesirable.

Also the elves definitely have a free dental-plan now thanks to Hermie and are hopefully on their way to unionizing. Fucking superb you funky little misfit.

Klaus (2019)

Turns a member of the bourgeoisie into a man I’d trust to carry my mail. Respect for postal workers this movie contains was ahead of its time.

 No direct takedown of the establishment but a heartwarming message -- “A true selfless act always sparks another” bITCH I may be crying -- that emphasizes the importance of giving to others even when there is no selfish motivation to do so, which is inherently anti-capitalist.

Scott Calvin starts as a toy executive who takes part in the commercialization of Christmas. He was probably a business major so automatically loses points.

The Santa dynasty itself seems to operate under the cutthroat rules of the business world where you must overthrow (or in this case, throw him off the roof) the former CEO in order to seize power. 

Elves have not unionized or seized the means of production by the end.

A Christmas Carol 

THE ORIGINAL. Charles Dickens was not even in the neighborhood of fucking around with this one. CREATED the anti-capitalist Christmas genre!!

Rich man treats his employees like shit and gets terrorized by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. Force him to redistribute his wealth by dragging him through a montage of his most epic fails -- oh, hey, remember when your fiancé left you? -- and make him listen as all his employees and relatives complain about his stingy ass. 

They end this slideshow by throwing this dude into his own grave. DIRECT ACTION. 

Like damn, the ghosts really said, “If you hoard your resources and ignore those in need when you could directly improve/save lives with no cost to yourself, you will die ALONE and you WILL pay for your crimes in hell.” Literally watching this movie is a catharsis for anyone who is or has been poor and working class. 

I’m including all versions of this movie but a special shout out to the Muppet version because it fucks the hardest.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Listen I’m not even in realms of joking with this one. This movie is THE anti-capitalist film of the holiday season. 

WhoVille commercializing Christmas and a fixation on consumer culture to the point where anything and anyONE who cannot be commodified -- aka the GRINCH -- is alienated? The Whos rediscovering that people should be cherished over material items once it all is stolen and they must confront how empty the holiday has become??

Cindy Lou becoming disillusioned in Christmas -- at an age that coincides when many children (those who celebrate Christmas at least) lost belief in Santa and had to wrestle with what the holiday means with the magic gone and they’re more aware of the rampant consumerism that taints the season?? Her resolve to find a meaning that goes beyond material consumption because if a holiday founded on goodwill doesn’t extend that goodwill to everyone, even those society deems undesirable, then what’s the point???

The Grinch despising Christmas because he is unable to participate and isolated from the Whos and also the better qualities within himself? His alienation serving to demonize him further as it allows the public to narrow his valid criticisms of the holiday down to him being different and thus inherently predisposed to evil?? And hmm isn’t it interesting that a LOT of this demonization comes via Mayor Augustus “generously paid for by the tax-payers of Whoville” Maywho, Mr. 1% himself.

The upper vs working class divide evident in the light show competition between Martha May and Betty Lou Who?? The opening scene of the shopping frenzy that mirrors our own consumerist culture and overworking of retail/poster workers??? This entire monologue:

“That's what it's all about, isn't it? That's what it's always been about. Gifts, gifts... gifts, gifts, gifts, gifts, gifts! You wanna know what happens to your gifts? They all come to me. In your garbage. You see what I'm saying? In your garbage. I could hang myself with all the bad Christmas neckties I found at the dump. And the avarice... the avarice never ends! ‘I want golf clubs. I want diamonds. I want a pony so I can ride it twice, get bored and sell it to make glue.’"
