hiii hiii ^_^ hiii what is your favourite mp100 amv? :D
HI HIII!!! Sorry for the late answer!! But ough... you've activated my trap card.
Honestly... and I mean truly honestly, I can't pick one. So I know that's not what this ask specifically asked, but, have just a whole list anyways sjhdgfsjdf
As per my last post, these are specifically less well known amvs, as I think pretty much everyone in this fandom knows of like, ???, 99%, Stressed Out and Kindness, for example. For these ones, I'm pretty sure none of them reach 1000 likes/notes (some don't reach even 100) (at the time of writing this, at least), but I assure you, that's not an indication of quality!! SO yeh. A pile of AMVs be upon ye (15 specifically for now).
Firstly, from Youtube:
DARK ARTS by pyrotechnicstars
youtube
Centers on: mp100 in general
This one's not as character centric as the rest of the amvs you'll see on this list, but i just Really love this one for how fluid and fun the editing is, and how the song just fits mp100's vibe very well imo ^^
maybe if i by kiwa
youtube
Centers on: Reigen
Such good cuts and scene selection :) really love when people choose a more introspective vibe with Reigen amvs. also it hit me with a surprise serirei reference that made me laugh, so hdhdhcf
All the Rowboats by hyrude
youtube
Centers on: Mob & Ritsu
The atmosphere in this one…. ough. I really appreciate when people choose to delve into the darker tones of this show, and this one really nails that !!
If I Was by ObsessiveBookworm
(@grocerystorephobic on tumblr)
youtube
Centers on: Reigen & Mob
Another introspective Reigen one! Specifically one focusing on his relationship with Shigeo. This one's really sweet,,, feels almost nostalgic in a way, really neat <3
Children's Work by ObsessiveBookworm
youtube
Centers on: Mob & Ritsu
SUCH A NEAT EXPLORATION OF THE KAGEYAMA BROTHERS…. the song fits them sooo well, its just. Augh.. Goes insane,,,,
Try To Change by Thamires
youtube
Centers on: Mob
Such a good choice of song.. I think this was one of the first mob amvs that I found and liked? Somber with a tinge of sweet at the end,,, :')
Former Lives by ObsessiveBookworm
youtube
Centers on: Mogami arc
Ooughggh;;,,, as i said, I really appreciate exploration of the darker sides to mp100, and this one is just. Augh. So well done, so gritty, so captivating despite being over a whole 6 minutes long. And I also admire it for the sheer challenge of making it, due to the length and how cut down this arc in the anime was, and how op made the best of it.. Love this one a lot…. <3
D o g T e e t h by flyweeabooty
youtube
Centers on: Mob
This one just,,, hurts…. so viscerally,,, I don't have many words for this one, just. Damn :(
With All Your Power by ObsessiveBookworm
youtube
Centers on: Season 1
The reason i'm labeling it as just season 1 is that…!! Its just!!! Such a great amv for that part of the story, with all the wackiness, the large cast of characters, the different parts going on and occasional tension and explosion of emotions…. its just sooo fun, i adore it !!!
The Whole World And Mob by ObsessiveBookworm
youtube
Centers on: Dimple & Mob
A RARE DIMPLE AMV!! And one focusing on their s1 dynamic as well! Honestly just such a silly and good time, this one genuinely makes me smile :)
....WAIT. AUGH. THERE'S A 10 VIDEO LIMIT???
...welp. Lemme take a moment then to put the other 5 in a reblog then, sorry for that jshgfjs. A brief intermission!! Watch these shrimp 'till then

Pika Rambles about the new OP because why not
If there’s anything I’ve learned from season 6 of MHA, it’s that whatever Twitter’s reaction is to something, I’m likely to have the opposite reaction.
I’m not often one to go into my opinions on things in MHA I feel are “good” or “bad.” Sometimes it happens, but just generally I’ve been trained to read and analyze a lot of things without respect to whether or not I like them or agree with their philosophies. I’m usually trying to understand a story more than anything.
But OPs are a different matter.
I have a weird thing for OPs. I’ve watched many over the years, and in some cases even decided whether or not I would watch an anime based on its OPs. (I’ve also...made a lot of AMVs.) OPs are supplementary material that are opportunities for animators to showcase their creativity and their understanding of the story’s themes. For that reason, I’ll happily ramble about my love for MHA OPs 1-4 and 7 anytime (god, especially 7; I’ll never get over the candy apple sakuga).
This time, OP 11, the ramble isn’t a good one. “What? Really? But everyone agrees it’s the shiniest one yet! Is it just that weird Ochako shit they threw in there?” No, stock anon. It’s so much more than that.
I have opinions.
If you like OP 11...you may not want to read my thoughts under the cut.
I’m just gonna complain in list form from here have fun.
1. First, all the good: I like the song. I realize not everyone’s gonna like the song, but I happen to like it. I also like some of the OP, particularly the first bits of it before the title card drops. I think it’s a good use of some of the cover/non-story artwork Horikoshi drew during this arc. Except already saying that, I can’t help but notice a huge missed opportunity. This cover art would’ve made for an EXCELLENT theme in the OP:
Tumblr media
It would’ve made up for the egregious lack of All Might too.
2. That title card is awful. Come on. They used to do fun things with the design or colors or something. This is just...weird effects that maybe will cause someone a seizure. It’s certainly not pleasing to the eye.
3. I don’t have a problem with the split screen bit. It’s not great, but it’s not terrible. Except the animation they give Ochako was basically already used in OP 8 so I don’t know what that’s all about.
4. All the Lady Nagant art is super lame sorry why do they repeat the same angle and pose twice? They could have used other camera angles at least, or even do something more with her younger self and angst? This is about as one-note as her actual role in the story (okay maybe it fits then).
5. I don’t need to complain about the weird ship bait that is the Ochako scene in the way everyone else already has done for me. I have a pressing urge to bring up though that Bones once again shows their lack of creativity here, and it feels like they have a vendetta against Ochako too. Where is her action shot? Her sakuga? There are plenty of moments from this arc that could’ve made a much nicer action shot here. Her smile is so weird because this whole arc she’s getting serious for Izuku’s sake and frowns at him a lot and stands up to him essentially. This feels like heroine-ization and it’s awful. Ochako does much more impactful and moving shit this arc than whatever the hell this is.
6. How dare you cheapen the hand-holding symbol of this series do you even know what the fuck is happening in this manga??? [clings to Iida’s leg]
7. The sakuga of Izuku swinging around is okay, probably the best part of the OP--except then we run into the Lady Nagant issue again
8. What the fuck is the weird white corpse from AoT doing here? What? What is that? Hello?
9. It needs to be said: the sakuga of Iida et. al. looks like absolute ass. I’m sick of fandom just salivating for nothing but sakuga while having absolutely no standards. “Action lines? Cool angles? Speedy animation? Yay it’s perfect!” No, seriously, if everyone’s gonna be so critical of the story and animation and pacing all the time, where’s your criticism of the actual sakuga? This shot looks awful and no one is talking about it. Not only do all the characters involved move awkwardly, you can’t even tell who they are. I wish we could have seen better highlights of the characters themselves, their faces even, including Shigaraki’s. YEAH THAT’S RIGHT. THEY’RE FIGHTING SHIGARAKI IN THAT SHOT. DID YOU EVEN NOTICE? YOU PROBABLY THOUGHT IT WAS IZUKU, RIGHT? SEE HOW DUMB THIS IS? IT MAKES NO SENSE FOR THAT TO BE SHIGARAKI EITHER, BUT IT IS. GO PAUSE A FRAME AND CHECK IT OUT. The special effects of their super attacks at the end also look like ass. This was the worst sakuga we’ve seen since the third movie and I am not impressed and I’m mad other people are.
10. Epilepsy colors Izuku is also terrible sakuga he’s so off-model it hurts I can’t stand watching this bit.
11. The Izuku+Tenko sequence is nice and a good show of creativity, and yet Izuku also looks off-model and I can’t stand how this is NOT the right season for this imagery. So that makes this a spoiler, basically? It doesn’t belong here. I like the subtle hint at the OFA star with the sun glare behind Izuku’s offered hand, but still this feels like they have no idea what this arc is about.
12. Exhibit #999999 that it feels like the animators have no idea what’s up with this arc: the ending image of Izuku doing the All Might fist in the air pose. Like, maybe it works if you read it as “he’s able to represent All Might because everyone else is there with him,” but it just doesn’t...feel right. It’s not earned based on the rest of the OP. Why couldn’t we just have them all be around the All Might statue? I don’t know what are you all even thinking when you draw this shit

Hey :)
I like your playlists and I found lots of new songs that way. Would you mind posting your spotify wrapped? I'm curious 👀
This just... made my year??? Omg thank you???!
Ok plot twist I don't actually use spotify 😅 I must be the only person on planet earth that switched back to an iPhone so I could use my iTunes again... but yeah I don't use a streaming service, but I do have my most played for the year! I uploaded it here - its on my instagram as a highlight reel!
For people who don't / can't access gram:
Most Played Songs by Month:
January: Mob by Eve
Shockingly my only Eve song for the year?? Last year I had like 3. Fight Song by Eve, one the CSM EDs, was my second most played Eve song but wasn't quite in my January Top 10
February: Shiki no Real by Chanceデラソウル
Suuuper groovy future funk remix of Shiki no Uta, the Samurai Champloo ED and one of my all time favorite/most played songs in my life lol
March: You Know How We Do It by Ice Cube
I go through a huge Dr. Dre/Ice Cube/Snoop phase every year and I'm not embarrassed to say it lol (also yes these are color coded by seasons bc my iTunes top playlists are separated by seasons idk why and yes that I am embarrassed about)
April: When Your Ex Says He Wants You Back by LTB Remix
I have no idea what the real name of this remix is?? I know it's a remix of When Your Ex Says He Wants You Back by Surface, but idk which one. On a related note no idea how I managed to get a full version, the only one I've found online is this version at the very beginning of this big mix
May: Deep Down by Neverdull
I will never pass up a song that samples Crystal Water's Gypsy Woman, and I am also a massive fan of everything Neverdull has put out, so it was no surprise this was my most played song when I discovered it and was in the Top 10 for several months after
June: Blame Brett by The Beaches
Omg man did I get obsessed with this band after this song. Also a huge fan of their other single Me & Me.
July: Disco by Surf Curse
I don't dislike Surf Curse but I don't listen to much else from them but this song, that always ends up on my Top 10 lists during summer. idk what it is but it's such a great beachy vibe for me. I genuinely cannot go to the beach without listening to it several times
August: Slingshot by Good Kid
Good Kid is actually my top artist of the year, and I'm thrilled to see it. It's really rare that I like so many songs off of a band's discography, and I think I have every single one of theirs. Also in my Top 10 for August was Alchemist, Osmosis, Tell me You Know, and No Time to Explain from them.
September: Honey by ID Chief
My favorite kind of future funk is when the original song isn't so spliced you can barely hear it, but there's still enough remix involved to really modernize the disco.
October: North Wind by Six Lounge
Shockingly enough I didn't actually listen to Ao no Sumika - arguably 'The' J-rock song of 2023 - very much even though I like that song a lot. I think I just can't handle my own feels, and tbh, as far as J-rock for this year goes I liked this ED from MHA more? I think the hook is just a little smoother and catchier imo.
November: From the Start by Good Kid
While I also love the bossa nova vibes of the original Laufey version, this cover is soooo freaking good. It definitely has summer anime OP vibes and there's actually an AMV using the first JJK S2 opening that gives me so many feels.
December: Standing Next to You by Jungkook
Ooof ok I'll come clean here I used to love k-pop back in 2014 and kind of got sick of the genre after EXO and F(x) broke up and was never into BTS or any of the new K-pop acts. But man this song slaps. I'm obviously a disco fan and there's some major disco grooves in this song

Two questions: 1.) Do you have more than one blog? 2.) Can you recommend any good nge analysis and fandom blogs to follow?
I've had this account since the Obama administration and since before SCOTUS heard the Obergefell case...naturally, I have several side blogs. Five, to be exact, but only three of them are used with any amount of regularity.
So, I'm not really tuned into the Eva fandom these days. Years of seeing rancid takes on a daily basis (and having been treated rather poorly by this fanbase at times) have lessened my enthusiasm for engaging with other fans, as you might imagine! There's a reason why most eva analysts post consistently for short periods of time and then disappear. My ideas on the show are also pretty specific and set in stone, so I don't have much of a desire to seek out new theories. I feel like I've seen it all, to be honest.
Tumblr users baldmisato1 and qmisato are definitely to go-tos, though they're both inactive. asuka--langley--soryu and reivelation are also great blogs. If you, for whatever reason, care about Kaworu, then adamworu is a good blog for that. My friend, blisseylesbian, has written some insightful posts about Ritsuko and Ritsumaya! Avoid Evageeks and r/evangelion. In fact, if the fandom is dominated by men (as is the case for Eva), then avoid the fandom subreddit.
Regarding Utena, empty movement is a truly wonderful archive of analysis essays, some of which predate the new millennium. We really need something like this in the Eva fandom. The palace perspectives essays are also a must read (if you can find them! OP has deactivated, as best as I can tell), though the OP gets some minor factual details wrong (it does, in fact, rain more than twice in the show).
Regarding Soul Eater, that fandom suffers from the typical shonen fandom BS, with the girl protagonist being neglected in favor of Death the Kid, Soul, and my least favorite anime boy (Black*Star). When Maka is centered, it's largely within the dreadful context of SoMa. People are also rather unaware of the lack of thematic cohesiveness in the manga relative to the anime, which makes discussion insufferable. Tumblr user soul-dwelling is the best SE blog, from what I've seen.
Sailor Moon probably has the best fandom of all my SpIns...and that's probably owing to the fact that SM makes no attempt to say anything deep. r/sailormoon is generally delightful.
What to say about Homestuck...I still love Homestuck, but the release of the epilogues kickstarted a series of bad events that has left the fandom inhospitable for me personally. Kanaya my beloved <3 I have no idea who's writing good Homestuck meta these days. In ye olde 2017, there was a Tumblr user named swamp-wizard who wrote some very good posts, but he's long since deactivated.
Also check out my AMVs, which are linked in my carrd. Not analysis but they're good :)

Black Lagoon Live Reacts
A compilation of discord messages as I watched the entirety of Black Lagoon over the course of ~1 week. CW: racism(?), spend a lot of time talking about nazis and swastikas, also mentions of child trafficking and sexual violence
Bonus: learn a little bit about my time in the US Navy
wow black lagoon's OP's lyrics are… something
Somehow, Revy is not at all how I pictured her being based on AMVs
…. is this SBMA they did mention subic bay…. 🤔
ok I'm just going with my headcanon of this being the philippines it feels right
Also it's kinda weird this is a place I have been to this anime would hit a lot harder had I seen it closer to the time I got out of the navy
weird word choice I mean I'd probably like it a lot more back then
ep1 of black lagoon is over The ED is curious 👀 I will continue more eps later
[someone asked for clarification about what I meant about the "when I got out of the navy" thing]
It was super exciting to see shows that took place in places I've been I have a feeling that outlaw bar is based on SBMA in the philippines https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subic_Bay_Metropolitan_Authority (I guess technically the location is subic bay freeport zone, but we just called it "the sbma" )
We stopped there every deployment to stock up on supplies and it was so dirty that eventually I just stopped getting off the ship because it wasn't worth it
I also really was into any anime that had anything to do with Kyushu, which is where the home port was (Sasebo specifically) I was stationed on an LHD (amphibious assault ship) and our base was shared with JSDF ships We didn't interact with them much, but I went to their cafeteria once
Anyway, it was just cool to be like "Hey I recognize XYZ" in anime Same as anyone noticing their local areas, I assume
It just got extra cool points because "my places" were more "exotic" in relation to my american peers, I guess
Nowadays I have so few emotions it's like "Oh, cool…. anyway" Also it's now 10+ years ago. So it feels kind of dumb to keep holding on to those memories. Especially when it was barely 3 years of my life
ep3 of black lagoon cambodia Another place I've been :heh: just wear the shirt, Rock, you fool
ep4 is about nazis
Tumblr media
I wonder if this was intentional.
I just got back from my neighbors They talked for an hour 😩 I am back to ep4 of black lagoon
Idk how many eps I will watch today It seems like a good show but it is again, episodic ok these are clearly nazis They call themselves nazis they heil hitler but their armbands have some symbol other than the swastika
… why bother?
this story continues to ep5 So guess I'll watch that one too ok they specifically mention hitler but they don't actually do the hand motion
they use the iron eagle
eh…. If you want to censor the most offensive parts, then why not use something that is based on nazis instead of actually nazis but with weird symbols? or maybe this is a real symbol I'm unfamiliar with?
Tumblr media
oh They just did the hitler salute for real now they're singing some nazi marching song idk if it's real or not but why go through all of this and still not show the swastika?
oop there it is
Tumblr media
Revy is supposed to be chinese? wtf doesn't look that at all At least Rock looks japanese-ish starting ep6 ok this is not as episodic as I thought
ep6 is the "die nazi scum" episode
ep7 some lady is editing porn videos lol
yeah you fucking go, Rock! Love this character shift
[someone says: "Black lagoon is weird. Surprisingly philosophical given that it's advertised as dumb action"]
That's surprisingly accurate.
ep 8 of black lagoon Making good time here we've entered the child trafficking episode
[someone mentions having to drop "The Great Pretender" due to a child trafficking arc]
eh it's just one kid and it's not sexual I wonder if the great pretender is worth watching (for me) though
Tumblr media
wow revy cleans up good
oh this isn't revy? :skeptical:
ep9 of black lagoon has been started
ep12 I love how multi-cultural this show is This ep is pretty racist though 😂
lmao boob sweat man I'm flying through these eps I guess that means I like the series I was going to start ep 13 but actually 12 was a good stopping point so guess I'll go to bed instead Bed being mindlessly scrolling through reddit til sleep comes, that is
I'm watching black lagoon ep 13 now grey haired twin kids who might be incestuous? Oh hey Thailand yet another place I've been
ep14 they shot the dogs 😔 we've reached the sexual child trafficking plot
One of the random side characters sounds like bender from futurama and that's a bit weird
ep15 wow 2 grown women who are bounty hunters / mercs and super strong split up and one of them flips out about how she can't walk to her car alone lmao what
alright so Black Lagoon actually mostly takes place in Thailand near the border of Cambodia and not SBMA at all. So of course I immediately assumed Pattaya just because that's where I've been lmao and basic google searching says I'm not far off. Black Lagoon takes place in a fictional city named Roanapur and it has a big buddha statue. Reddit claims the main theories of the location this is based on is Chanthaburi or Trat. One reddit user says that buddha statue is probably Hua Laem Pagoda, which is about 2 hours from Pattaya :wheeze: Man I really wish I watched this anime closer to my Navy time What would Navy me say about this show? this ep really is… a lot a bit too real with the horrors of child trauma :(
Oh the ED changed instead of Revy leaving her boots behind It's a girl in a nightgown oh it's the twins how sad :( ep16 time to counterfeit USD "What is it witht his city? Everyone looks so damn shady" haha Oh, sweet summer child. That's just Southeast asia lmao "Mister elvis"
oh hey the blonde nun with the sunglasses is voiced by the owl witch VA in owl house
LOTTON THE WIZARD :wheeze: (and of course he's got gray hair) ep17 the nun's name is eda how coincidental with owl house 😂
"That room's worked the last 4 times out of 7!" Ah ha A perfect 4/7 score heh
this show has a ton of strong ladies and no obvious fan service Except this episode This side character has had so many random panty shots ep 18 the localization in this is great 😂
lmao lotton the wizard is just as stupid as the name implies Love how that joke paid off WHAT A TWIST bullet proof jacket stupid american damaging the engine of the boat he's on in the middle of the goddamn ocean
ep20 lmao, of course its Roppongi
ok I think I'm done with black lagoon for the night idk if I want to go to bed yet but I'm kinda over black lagoon for now
I really don't feel like watching anything right now but I realized tomorrow is my last day of freedom before my parents come back for a month so I kind of have to finish the show now or else I most likely won't finish it at all so here we go with ep 21 of black lagoon oh this is scarred lady's flashback/backstory ep
ep22 dumb girl who's never seen danger is convinced she's strong enough to lead a band of yakuza unsurprisingly, she gets captured and starts to realize how out of her depth she is when they argue about how they're gonna rape her
Hell yeah Revy shows idiot man how much of a weak bitch he is YuGiOh's Tristan uses katana to slice bitch ass's gun IN HALF More news at 11
schoolgirl calling Rock OUT she decides to stay in the dark world and stick with the yakuza boss thing I wonder if she'll show up later ep23 scarred lady has been trying to take over japan It seems to be working looks like schoolgirl is going to stay in the picture for the next few episodes at least
really don't know what to think about Rock's whole identity crisis thing part of me wants to say he's a fool but the other part wants to say "he's 14 and this is deep" we're on ep 24 now out of 29
…. I've decided rock is an idiot
ok rock is an idiot but at least he's not completely delusional like Yukio/schoolgirl damn she killed herself the ED changed to rock music lol
I have 4 eps of black lagoon left but I am absolutely not feeling it There's just no urge to finish, no specific thing I am waiting to learn about or see happen Unless I force myself to finish today, I am 99% sure I will never pick it up again
finally starting ep25 of black lagoon Let's see if I finish this today
they should make some kind of gun maid anime they really honed in on a niche here
ep 27 grey haired wizard dude is back and he is absolutely stupid and I love him
oh no she's gonna kill the boy 😭 roberta's story is the most captivating of this series ep28 oh he got saved… lmao the wolf sounds for her LOL just kick grey haired guy right in the balls like nothing and continue on
ep29! the last one wow a revy flashback That was… something this play is falling apart I distinctly remember the major taking the gun back from the kid in the previous episode
I don't know what's going to happen here but I assume it's going to be a horrifying blood bath of all parties ewwwwww her finger
…. alright I might be too dumb to get the ending so I am just left disappointed and confused buuut I finished it So there's that, I guess

Started watching anime on a whim
Watched 5 episodes of uh the one about the edgy feral witch"s apprentice and i kept waiting for it to get good and theres some good story ideas but too much of is stupid. Also would have worked better with a female protag. Wow he really is consistently feral rather liked that concept actually. But too much of it is contrived like dude's phone has a command to conveniently unlock all the cells with no restrictions or in general the lack to security checks on weapons. Or really the put the one witch baby tree where the humans can get it? And then protag levels half a city but struggles to kill this one dude. Also anime crimes against women: rape for cheap drama is so boring to watch. Op ed songs were great tho.
Finally watching jujutsu kaisen and over the last few years i have seen sooo much stuff for this show and i still didnt know that pink? hair was the protag i usually see the white and black haired dudes. Oh this is well produced, and the animation is good. I see why people like it. Lesbian. I love her already. Oh black hair ive been seeing isnt megumi its the dude with plugs and hair tied up.
Ep5: ok thats very interesting the dynamic. Megumi's trying to get himself and itadori out alive. Initially tries to pressure ... Sukuna? To regenerate even willing to sacrifice his life then switches to suppression because he has no chance in a fight even if that risks itadori bleeding out. Oh theres the dude ive been seeing he's an antagonist? Also whiplash from itadori dying (im assuming some bs happens that revives him) to school tournament.
What is up with all these dudes ripping their shirts off?? This is like the 3rd time this has happened??
Office bro is dead he's challenging the final boss in ep like 9/24.
13 oh yeah they all still think he's dead
18 uh what happened to the run away plan? Eh this arc is pretty boring for me.
I cant remember do sukuna and itadori remember when the other is in control? Also for a series about highschoolers there is remarkably little highschool stuff the cast could easily be in their early 20s joining an organization.
former punk fushiguro lol. also love how the 3 others instantly jump on the opportunity to troll him.
24. it's interesting to see how anime has changed over the years. if jjk had been released in 2003 this would have been an episodic monster of the week style show where every episode they would take out a different curse with reused animation.
i love her. kugisaki murdering a dude in front of their family and boasting about it. damn. jjk draws the line between curses and humans and immediately like next episode blurs that line. i like how this si getting to itadori
Movie: i like how for once the big monster is a girl. The contrast between jjk 0 and the main series really highlights two genres jjk could have taken. With okkotsu(?) Jjk is a darker supernatural horror thriller with its shy low self esteem protag like deadman wonderland or tokyo ghoul among others there was an era where this style/subgenre was very popular. The second genre with itadori is the hotblooded battle shounen. I actually like the latter so im not complaining just an observation. Also i see why tumblr and twitter like geto.
S2e1: gay. The op end ed might as well be ship amvs
i might like this better than the first season wow.
uhhhh wasn't it suppose to be really bad if the girl died
bro that sounds like burnout you need a vacation.
aw i liked the flashback arc. back to 2018
hmm robot kun might not make it out of this. wow yeah just add more death flags.
gojo sure has changed huh. used to be more amoral. kinda sad geto is actually dead he was a good character although given what the series has established so far the author could revive anyone plausibly.
from curses to sapient curses and transformed humans to curse users aka the bad humans i wonder when it'll just be whoever jujutsu highschool doesn't like.
I think I've come around on gojo its funny how the show goes out of its way to tell the audience how good looking he is like girls swarming him or characters commenting on his pretty eyes and flawless skin and then the part i really like how this is contrasted with his annoying personality that no one likes. Its so funny, his coworkers tolerate him at best theres like maybe 3 people tops that actively like being around him. Also he only really started covering his eyes after the flashback arc, i wonder if its because of those events whether its the unlocking 6 eyes (why is it called that) or geto leaving. Because with the blindfold he mostly just looks like a weirdo. I also cant help but wonder if gojo losing sight of his humanity during the tengen incident, like he seemed very... unmoored? meant geto didnt have a grounding point to rely on later. So by the time gojo had figured himself out and how to be a functioning person again geto was already gone.
Scrolled through tumblr and wow people are horny for the deadbeat. Also nanami. The oldest womb dude too but i expected that since he's a half dead looking goth which is just up tumblr's alley. Wow i havent seen a reader insert plague this bad since haikyuu. Go straight girls go (just stay away from me).
judge jury executioner the jujutsu world really is a lawless mobstate.
37. huh. what was that spaghetti scene
39 eyy reached the last currently available episode. lots of active plot threads. i still don't know what was up with chrono(?) or where he ran off to. deadbeat zombi toji has picked out megumi. mahito and whats his face are roaming around. not sure I'll read the manga but i might skim it. the best part of this show is the cool fight scenes afterall.
Was thinking about the framing of the flashback arc op and ed. And they appear so carefree and warm because we're seeing how gojo remembers his highschool days. He's dreaming of days past wishing he could return to them.

not reblogging the version of the post with the rwby fairy tales chapters because of the OP, but looking at it
Tumblr media
1st chapter being Grimm Child, makes sense, it’s Halloween, it’s a spooky story. give ya nightmares, wanna see AMVs with it
Hunter’s Children, not much to say about that, it’s a fine story, it gets to show off new Grimm we’ve not seen before. mainly a depiction of sort of proto-Huntsmen and Huntresses before Oz turned it into a formalised thing following the Great War, and another depiction of Remnant’s rule of four
The Shallow Sea is interesting because the trailer kinda indicated they were going with the Judgment of Faunus but it’s possible the version the show is presenting may be a conflated version of the tale that combines elements from both stories (like how the Grimm Child is a spooked up, hyperbolic depiction of an attack by a Chill but with the possessed appearances conflated with a different fairytale that we don’t see about a white witch living in the woods - Salem). one thing i’m worried about is people are gonna take this one literally with the depiction of a god (who... it’s mythology guys, probably wasn’t ever real in the history of Remnant after Tweedle Dick and Tweedle Douchebag flew the coop) and the island, and thinking the island is the one RWBY, Jaune and Neo are on, when it’s very clear from the tale (and the fact that the Shallow Sea is also like, an actual place in the World of Remnant) that it’s Menagerie
The Indecisive King - again not much to say, fine story, bit of a love story in it. another worry about people taking this one too literally with the Crown - the story features a crown which seems to show people the consequences of their choices, resulting in the eponymous King becoming indecisive (and as a result, negligent). the problem is i think people are gonna take that as an accurate depiction of how the Crown of Choice works when it’s a fairytale; it’s not an accurate depiction of whatever events it’s fictionalising (like how The Two Brothers story portrays them as far more benevolent and passive than they actually were, or how the Story of the Seasons is actually a story of a wizard giving his power to four girls and placing an impossible burden on their shoulders conflated into a fable about the passing of the seasons and teaching a moral at the end, which was unlikely to have actually been the case when Oz decided he needed to throw more children to Salem’s wolves)
The Girl in the Tower - okay we’ve seen this one, but this is a depiction of it separated from the Two Brothers, and if it’s like the book, the end is gonna have Ozpin’s commentary, trying to twist the story into a diatribe against Salem to depict her as having always been manipulative (which, dude, not a good look in a story about a girl locked away by her abusive and cruel father and wanting to escape). also people are already bringing up the sigil in Salem’s tower again as “evidence” that Jaune is somehow related to her and just... i was already sick of it the first time. there is literally no way they’re related, for several reasons; 1) Salem has absolutely no reason to continue the use of that symbol as it’d be a reminder of her shitty father, and she’s the only human from that iteration of humanity. 2) Salem’s only children died. so. y’know. unless you think those literal children already had kids, it’s kind of impossible. 3) it’s been millennia. even if they were somehow related, it’d be so distantly that the same would be true for almost everyone in the show. and 4) there’s literally no fucking reason for it, it adds nothing. it has as much narrative weight as “Qrow is Ruby’s real father” or “Ruby’s gonna lose an eye”, it’d add nothing but cheap drama that contributes nothing to actual characterisation or character trajectories (and really just involves transposing beats from a different characters’ narrative where these things are important and transposing them onto a character where the presented issues are completely irrelevant, tl;dr - stop trying to make Jaune more important than he already is
The Warrior in the Woods - again, another proto-huntsmen and huntresses story, with the “twist” (not really because the story itself doesn’t put much focus on it, it’s a subtle thing that only means something if you already know about the silver eyed warriors) of the eponymous warrior having silver eyes, not really much to say, i think they probably chose this one last as a way to just tie into the legacy of heroism that Ruby is the current generation to inherit to tie things back to her and the show as we head towards volume 9

Seiyuu Challenge #11
11. The seiyuu with the best singing voice?
I didn’t have a hard time picking, but I had a hard time not including literally every single one I thought of. Believe me, this is the abridged version. I had to really think hard and narrow it down. But like cutting off limbs, I trimmed it down. Let me put it this way, I didn’t include Nana Mizuki, Kishou Taniyama, Tatsuhisa Suzuki, or Marina Inoue. *grumbles* I swear I’m going to end up making posts for every single one that I missed.
Kana Hanazawa and Satoshi Hino - Futari Shizuka
Hitting two birds with one stone! Both of them deserve a mention. His low voice and her voice is just... well Kana Hanazawa. That’s one of the best compliments you can give, isn’t it? But I can’t mention Kana without including a live performance of Renai Circulation! I still like the song I chose better though. =3=
Nao Toyama - Love Call and 灯火のまにまに
While she didn’t make my top seiyuu list, I like this song by her. Her piano and her vocals are great! Honourable mentions for just Nao Toyama include the Tsuki ga Kirei OP and ED
Sora Amamiya - Feather Ronde and Skyreach
I even made a song recommendation list for her! I had a hard time choosing one song, but I figure you can always check out the list! This song isn’t even from an anime (not that I know of). It’s from her solo album! Now she’s part of the unit TrySail with Momo Asakusa and Shiina Natsukawa!
Yoko Hikasa - Owaranai Uta and Utsukushiki Zankoku no Sekai
I made a song recommendation list for her too! The old hag (a running joke made by Yuuichi Nakamura) sings really well.
Miyuki Sawashiro - Heart in Blue and Blazing Bullet
I can’t just not include her on the list. She’s legendary. She doesn’t even sing prominently as a solo singer since she isn’t one, but no words are even needed here.
The second song features Yoshitsugu Matsuoka! The two of them are not close. Miyuki said on a radio show that “he never talks to me!”
Side Tangent: Okay, in defence of them him, he has had a lot of history with social anxiety (yes, this history has even been noted! It made it from behind the scenes to my knowledge. That’s pretty far). He is only close to his male seiyuu cohorts (ESPECIALLY NOBUNAGA SHIMAZAKI who he says has a really nice smile and goes on, etc.) and Ai Kayano (who he has worked with for over thirty anime).
Toshiyuki Toyonaga - Day You Laugh and Reflection
His song recommendation list is sitting in the draft box because I’m indecisive about which ones to choose.
Haruka Tomatsu - Yume Sekai and  一分一秒君と僕の
Yup. Another song recommendation list for this one too! The second one is a song from the group Sphere! She’s a part of that unit, but they’re currently on hiatus. Check out the songs on the recommendation list too!
Mamoru Miyano - How Close You Are and Refrain (Chihayafuru AMV)
[I feel like I’m lacking male seiyuu...]
Okay, I feel like I was this close to putting the Miyabe song just to screw with people. Seriously though, imagine trying to [bleep] a fricking pineapple. Actually, don’t. I still want people to read the rest of this. Just putting it out there that he still pulls this role out to this day in the same short shorts. Not linking that because I can’t find that, and nothing can prepare you for it.
Seriously though, I’m going to prepare a song recommendation list. It might be a bit like Maaya Sakamoto one though. It hasn’t come out because Tumblr can only fit five videos, and I’m like, “BUT ALL OF THESE ARE NEEDED T^T” I hope to have it out eventually though.
Asami Seto - Soshiteima and Fukashigi no Carte
I only discovered her, her acting, and her singing. Just listen to her songs. The clarity and pure beauty... I have been missing out. I went more subbed/available content on her.
Saori Hayami - Let Me Hear and Secret
This is her Live Performance Recommendation List. This was added after I officially posted it, but I suddenly did a double-take and came back. How could I forget such an amazing singer?? Anyway, I only have that list for now because official song recommendation lists are too difficult to make with so many choices.
Yoshimasa Hosoya - Kaze no Requiem and Just Wanna Know
I feel like I just had the main three seiyuu of Chihayafuru in a row, but this is a mostly random order because I would listen to any of these people. I know I keep saying this, but CHOOSING IS HARD. Here’s another person I don’t make a song compilation for because I can only include five video-form ones, and I just sit there asking which I should include. But I chose two to recommend here... and watched my soul die as I neglected the rest for another day. @akaskira would know my pain! Also, I hear he’s stopped singing because of health purposes, but I pray for his recovery (not that he should come back asap if it’ll cause more trouble) because I want to hear him doing more anime, more singing, and more character songs that are available to me in Canada even if it’s just from someone pirating it and uploading it onto YouTube. Beggars can’t be choosers.
Maaya Sakamoto - Gravity and Sonic Boom
Seriously, making a top song recommendation list for her has been put off because I want to include everything, but I don’t even have access to all her music! But what I do get is amazing. She’s one of those artists that I would go to a concert for, and that means more than normal because I have social anxiety and noise sensitivity.

Fifteen Favorite Anime Openings Part 1
The $5 tier on my patreon allows people to nominate/vote on one post a month- about anything!  This is one of those posts. Go to my patreon here to learn more.
“Favorite anime openings” was nominated this month
Unfortunately, this unleashes a MONSTER because I love anime openings. I love watching them. The best ones get you so excited to watch the show. They can contain gorgeous animation and imagery. I like to discover songs through them, and I like to watch the ones for shows I love when I’m feeling down because it reminds me of all the stuff I love. It’s like a mini amv or music video or whatever and I’m alllll about those.
Aaaand it turns out tumblr doesn’t let you embed more than five videos per post- so I decided to upload the full list on Wordpress here and post it on tumblr in parts, with this being part 1.
My favorites were pretty hard for me to pick,. I decided to go with the ones that I love that were excellent on BOTH a visual and musical level and the visuals were really timed cohesively with the song. They tend to be from shows I actually like too. I just like ops more when I actually am attached to the characters.
Also, I chose to put openings everyone and their mother hasn’t seen near the top and more popular/obviously-I’m-gonna-put-this anime on the bottom, so hopefully more people can appreciate the less well-known openings. Check ‘em out, they introduce you to a great show!
Natsume Yuujinchou Roku Opening
youtube
The imagery in this opening is so flippin’ gorgeous that immediately after seeing it I posed an excited photoset, as some of you may remember. The song is calming too. It’s so tranquil, and exquisite, celebrating personal growth and natural beauty. perfectly reflecting the warm, lovely, soothing tone of the show it comes from.
(I’m trying to keep these to one op per show, but I also love the Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou  op, which starts out showing these empty spaces…then goes back to them at the end and shows them through Natsume’s eyes, and we see yokai were there all along. It’s very cool).
Michiko to Hatchin Opening
youtube
I looove the aesthetic of this opening and the jazzy, jaunty tune. The bold, tropical colors that switch from scene to scene, seeing Michiko expertly outrace the cops on her scooter while Hana clings on- it captures the energy and cheekiness of the show so well. My only qualm is the nude images of Michiko being kinda eye-rolly, but even they’re done more tastefully than most anime would manage.
Chihayafuru 2 OP
youtube
This is another opening so pretty I remember post screencaps celebrating its prettiness. I love how the card game aspect is incorporated, with the words/characters floating around in circles and Chihaya eventually grasping one, I love the sequence where the younger versions of the main characters are framed with card shapes, but then bb Chihaya breaks out of the frame when she excitedly grabs her friends... and I love the leaf blowing by as younger Chihaya turns to the older one. It also all really syncs well with the song, so it feels cohesive.
Nichijou OP 1:
youtube
This is a perfect example of an OP reflecting the energy and zaniness of the show it comes from. The wacky imagery is non-stop and lets you know just how weird these characters are, and the song is frantic and contains several different melodies and it makes your head spin. It packs so much in that the OP actually feels longer than it is, and that’s impressive. But it still comes together to be an enjoyable watch and listen.
I actually might like the melody and energy of opening 2 of this anime even more, that op is also pretty obviously meant to be a viewed as a sequel to the first one (its style and format being the same and also there's callbacks). Since they're a matching set I figure part one should be the one on the list.
March Comes in Like a Lion Opening 3:
youtube
March Comes in Like a Lion has many gorgeous openings, but I think this one is my favorite. The eye-candy visuals, the arc, the warmth of it all…and the action matches the pretty song and even the lyrics are taken into account. I did a full breakdown of the OP here.

My part of the DCMK Fanworks Server Halfiversary Exchange 2023! For @blenderfullasarcasm!
I decided to follow the Yu-Gi-Oh! and DCMK crossover prompt, which specifically highlighted "Season 0," the colloquial name for the first anime adaptation of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. So, I paired Detective Conan (and the eensy-littlest bit of Magic Kaito) footage with that anime's theme song, "A Yell of Thirst" by Field of View.
For as long as I've known about it, I've had my own soft spot for the Season 0 series. The portrayal of Yami Yugi as this frightening, malicious personality who emerges only in times of danger gripped me—and still does. Revisiting the series for this project, I could still so strongly recall scenes of Yugi and his friends grappling with his mysterious "other self."
And I also realized that maybe Detective Conan and Yu-Gi-Oh! are more similar than I previously thought. After all, couldn't "Sleeping Kogoro" also be described as a frightening, malicious personality who emerges only in times of danger?
(Or, more in line with the actual video I edited, Conan is "another Shinichi" who both terrifies and helps him, a dynamic perhaps not so unlike that of Yugi and Yami Yugi in Season 0.)
I hope you enjoy what I came up with! My goal was to utilize clips featuring every character and relationship noted in the prompts, and though an AMV can't exactly be a casefic or delve into worldbuilding per se, I also tried to capture the spirit of those prompts, too, including more actual detective-ing and backgrounds than I ever have in my Conan AMVs before. Huge shout out goes to @dcmk-scenery, an absolutely fantastic resource who were a tremendous help, as well as the Detective Conan World wiki, which definitely led me to clips from episodes I haven't even seen yet! The English translation of the lyrics are also courtesy of the Yu-Gi-Oh! wiki.
As a final note, though I know the requirement for the exchange was a 15-second AMV, I really wanted to make my gift special; Blender is so kind and does so much for the DCMK community, including setting up this event in the first place! I'm so glad I was able to to be a part of this, and I hope my final result brings joy.
This AMV can also be watched on YouTube in full 1080p and with subtitles that can be toggled on and off. Sources used are:

Top 5 pre-2000 manga/anime, for the ask meme?
Thanks for the ask! I’ve read almost no manga, so this is gonna be all anime. Instead of just making a list, I thought I’d go into more detail on what I like about these shows that makes them my top 5. I actually keep going back and forth about which I like more between my #1 and #2 picks, so you can probably consider them a tie for #1.
1. Great Teacher Onizuka
youtube
Great Teacher Onizuka is easily one of the funniest things I’ve seen, whether animation, live-action, Japanese, or non-Japanese. Onizuka’s faces and the noises he makes are absolutely priceless. Uchiyamada’s (the Vice Principal) faces can be equally priceless. The English dub isn’t *good* (and they have a handful of VAs doing multiple roles), but that just adds to its charm for me in this case (I haven’t seen the Japanese dub). I like how Onizuka helps his students through their problems by teaching them how to become good people, not just good students, even though he’s not necessarily a good role model himself. I like how he views them as people, not students. I like how the show keeps its characters around, and doesn’t sideline them after they’ve had their feature episode(s), so we can see how they interact differently with each other as they grow and change.
FWIW, Urumi Kanzaki and Onizuka are tied for my favorite character from the show.
2. Belladonna of Sadness
youtube
Belladonna of Sadness (Kanashimi no Belladonna in Japanese) is an absolute visual treat. Its visuals can be incredibly surreal and metaphorical/symbolic, which I tend to find inherently interesting aesthetically. They can also be pretty psychedelic/mind-trippy at points. The movie was released in 1973, and had never had a U.S. theatrical release until last summer (apparently it had a limited screening here in 2009), when it was restored and shown in 4K. Unfortunately, no theaters in my area showed it, which is a huge shame, as I think it would’ve been incredible to see on the big screen.
I like how the movie handles misconceptions of sexuality as inherently bad: The setting of the story is feudal, so its world’s ideas about sexuality, especially for women, are incredibly limiting. The main character, Jeanne, has internalized that mindset, so she views her sexual awakening as being brought on by the devil. There’s a lot that I’m leaving out, but eventually she makes a pact with the devil, and expects to be thrown into a world of fire and darkness and evil, etc. etc. as a result, but she wakes up and it’s springtime, and it’s lush and green and vibrant. I love that way of conveying Jeanne’s misconceptions about (her own) sexuality and her realizations that her previous mindset was wrong.
Jeanne’s journey and growth and change over the course of the story is something I really enjoyed watching and found very gratifying, both emotionally and thematically/ideologically.
I feel like there’s a lot more I could say about the stuff I mentioned above, including about the movie’s source, and how that informs the movie. I’ll probably write a post about it at some point.
I should also mention that this movie is INCREDIBLY sexually explicit. It had a red band trailer, and is rated Rx on MAL (that’s the rating they give to hentai). I’ve heard it also inspired Kunihiko Ikuhara, one of my favorite anime directors, to work in anime, though I don’t think that’s something he’s confirmed.
3. Mega Man
youtube
Mega Man is the first anime I ever saw, well before I even knew what anime was. I remember getting up super early before Sunday school literally every week when I was a kid (I wanna say it was like 5 a.m.), just so I could make 110% sure I was awake when Mega Man started. Like, it was usually about an hour early, because I distinctly remember watching episodes of two other shows before Mega Man came on.
I don’t think it holds up well in terms of “objective” quality, but at the same time, I also don’t think there’s really anything bad about it. It’s a very average, typical, episodic kids’ show. The animation and (especially) art quality can vary wildly from one episode to the next. The one-liners can be pretty bad, though I have a massive tolerance for (read: love of) bad puns, so that doesn’t really bother me. XP
It’s simple fun soaked in nostalgia, but I also love some of the really silly/doofy absurdities here and there. For example, in one episode, a vampire robot created by Dr. Wily hypnotizes a human character into believing she’s a vampire robot. And she actually turns into a vampire robot somehow, even shooting lightning from her fangs. XD In that same episode, Dr. Wily creates a werewolf robot that actually transforms based on moonlight. In another episode, a robot dinosaur lays an egg, which hatches. And in yet another episode, there are lion men who shoot eye beams that turn humans into lion people.
This isn’t the case anymore, but when I was a kid, my favorite episode was the one where Mega Man X, Vile, and Spark Mandrill from the Mega Man X video game make an appearance. As a kid, the Mega Man X games (at that point it was just the first three on Super Nintendo) were my favorite, so I thought that the episode with Mega Man X was the best thing ever. :’D I still want a full-fledged Mega Man X cartoon/anime, preferably based on the earlier games (up through X4 at the latest).
My favorite bad robot used to be Elec Man, because I thought he looked really cool, and also Vile and Spark Mandrill when they had their one-off appearance. More recently (yes, I do still re-watch this show from time to time), I’ve come to really like Proto Man. In general I enjoy his attitude, and I find it amusing that he compliments Mega Man from time to time. I’ve also come to like Roll quite a bit.
4. Yu Yu Hakusho
youtube
Of the really long-running (70 to 80+ episodes) shounen stuff I’ve seen, Yu Yu Hakusho is easily my favorite. I love the English dub (I’ve never seen it in Japanese), as well as the English-dubbed versions of the OPs and EDs (man, I miss when companies did that). I really like how much character work and moments there are in the relationships between characters. For a show that has the oft-used theme of friendship that so many shounen shows have, I like how Yu Yu Hakusho handles it, where it’s not just characters supporting each other, but it actually feels a bit more…real? Like, I can easily see these characters hanging out or interacting in very normal circumstances. It’s not just, “Yeah, you can do it! Keep going!”
These are the relationships that have stuck out to me the most:
Yuusuke and Kuwabara
Yuusuke and Keiko (mainly in the 4th season)
Yuusuke and Genkai
Yuusuke and Younger Toguro
Genkai and Younger Toguro
Yuusuke and Raizen
Kuwabara and Shizuru
Kurama and Yomi
There are just so many good moments, too. Some of my favorites are Genkai’s “final” words to Yuusuke in season 2 about having to fight with time to find your place in the world; the stuff between Genkai and Younger Toguro (especially in Spirit World) and their backstory; the stuff between Yuusuke and Keiko before he leaves for Demon World in season 4; Sensui’s final moments; the stuff between Yuusuke and Raizen.
I love how the characters all have such distinct voices and perspectives. Like, Genkai’s views of Toguro, what he did, and why he did it are different than Toguro’s views of those things, and both characters’ views of their own past and present are surprisingly nuanced and complex, given the rather limited screentime those things get. And I love how they both, in their own way, sort of become surrogate parents to Yuusuke. And then, at the end of the series, he also has Raizen, and I love the dynamic the two of them have.
I think maybe the best I can explain what I like so much about Yu Yu Hakusho is that it has the fun stuff that a lot of shounen shows have, the fighting and the superpowers and overall energetic tone, but it also has a lot of meat under the surface, and that meat is woven throughout practically all of the character work in the series, which I think is part of what makes the character interactions and friendship themes in the show seem more real and true to life, somehow, than many of the other shounen shows I’ve seen (I think the English dub helps with this a lot, too).
For a long time, Kurama was one of my absolute favorite anime characters because he embodies what I think is sort of the pinnacle of humanity: he has great intelligence, wisdom, and logical abilities, but he also has tremendous warmth, empathy, and caring. And he sort of uses them to augment one another, like a synthesis/harmonization of these two general aspects that we all have.
5. Princess Mononoke
(Sorry there’s no video here. I couldn’t find an AMV I liked, I can’t think of a particular clip that would be fitting, and I wasn’t too fond of the movie’s trailer, either.)
It’s been a long time since I last watched Princess Mononoke, so this entry is shorter and less detailed and/or in-depth than some of the others.
Generally speaking, I like how the man vs. nature theme is handled. It wasn’t simply man = bad, nature = good. Both sides are given depth and nuance. Further, I like how the nature side is depicted as such, where the animal gods behave more…beastly? animal-like?, if that makes sense.Like, I’m thinking of the way that Moro talked to Ashitaka the night after he’s saved by the Forest Spirit. Nature isn’t humanized, but it’s still presented in a way that you can empathize and sympathize with it.
I like how the movie doesn’t sugar coat anything, as well as how the ending doesn’t tie everything up nice and neat with a bow. The way it ended felt very realistic, which I thought was very much in keeping with the movie’s overall approach.
Honorable mentions:
-Revolutionary Girl Utena
-Serial Experiments Lain
-Neon Genesis Evangelion
-The Vision of Escaflowne
These aren’t actually “honorable mentions,”but I couldn’t think of a succinct way to put it. Rather, the first three of the abovetitles are shows that I feel like, based on my first viewing, if I understoodthem better, could very likely have made it into the list. I think this isespecially true for Revolutionary Girl Utena, based on my first viewing, as well as things I’vecome to understand in retrospect about both the show and itswriter/director/original creator, Ikuhara. As for The Vision of Escaflowne, I’m currently watching it, though I’m only seven episodes in.
Again, thanks for the ask! I had a lot of fun writing this! :)

The Definitive Ranking of Bleach OPs
For many years Bleach ruled the roost in the United States fandom as the coolest comic running in Shonen Jump magazine. For a period of time the anime was similarly successful, inspiring everything from cosplay to fanfiction to a live-action movie. Even more than Naruto, a far more sprawling franchise, Bleach defines a specific period of early 2000s anime fight media that briefly enraptured countless high school students as they illegally pored over multiple-part episode splits on YouTube, crafting AMVs set to Linkin Park while listening to Number One on repeat. And yes, I'm including myself in that crowd.
The Bleach manga ended years ago, and the anime did too. That's all to the good for our purposes though, because it lets us build a genuine historical record based on the anime's most significant achievement: its range of incredible opening songs and animation. What is the best Bleach opening of them all? To craft this list I used this thorough and objective criteria:
  1. Is the song a banger?
  2. Is this opening at least as cool as Sonic Adventure 2's "Escape from the City?"
  3. How does it stand up as an artifact of its time, and how does it stand up today?
  Let's begin!
  15. "BLUE" (ViViD)
youtube
I like the attention to scale and space in this opening, with energy blasts blowing through whole rows of buildings and Ichigo knocking enemies over like bowling balls. But there's so much fighting happening here, crammed into such a short space, that it's hard to follow. Not a fan of the song either, so this one's placing at the bottom.
  14. "Anima Rossa" (Porno Graffitti)
youtube
Porno Graffitti has a long history composing opening themes for anime, accompanying everything from 2003's Fullmetal Alchemist to My Hero Academia. The song they've contributed here is a bluesy number that I'd rank above several other entries on this list. Then why is this #14? When watching this opening, I couldn't shake the feeling that this sequence could have been servicable for any other shonen anime series. Bleach earned its fame through a certain je ne sais quoi, and if it's not here, no matter how competent the sequence is otherwise, what's the point?
  13. "Chu-Bura" (Kelun)
youtube
When rewatching openings to put this feature together, I was frankly blown away by the first half or so of this opening sequence. The cast being cute together and hanging out at the beach! Some unexpectedly fluid animated hijinks as Ichigo walks to school! A pretty good song! Then the fighting kicks in and the rest of the opening is comparatively boring. Worth a watch, though.
  12. "Harukaze" (SCANDAL)
youtube
This was the last Bleach opening to be featured in the anime series, and features some fun callbacks to earlier episodes like a runthrough of every episode title card (!!). I wouldn't say this is one of the show's best, but it gets stronger as it goes along and features some neat and stylish visual tableaux. The doors opening at the end to reveal the sponsors is a nice touch, too.
  11. "Alones" (Aqua Timez)
youtube
Watching Bleach openings on YouTube as a child, I used to be freaked out by the sight of Kon the stuffed animal very loudly singing the theme song. On rewatch, though, I think I underrated this one: it's a splintered sequence of memory, love and grief that bears the strong iconography Bleach had in its prime. Aqua Timez would later do better, though!
  10. "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" (Beat Crusaders)
youtube
What makes a Bleach opening? Is it the music? Outrageous poses? Fast-paced fights? This opening doubles down on "style," which is admittedly Bleach's ace in the hole. There are sequences here that refer back to the first opening sequence, but on a grander scale: like the red and black silhouettes of Ichigo and Rukia being mean to each other, but projected on several television screens! Or every character recieving their own cool spinning CD cover. The song isn't really to my taste, but overall it's a good time.
  9. "chAngE" (Miwa)
youtube
This opening makes an immediate statement when we see Ichigo's hometown erupt into an unmistakable mushroom cloud freeze frame. My other favorite bit is when the spooky devil hand reaches towards the other hand, just as the vocals spike. What can I say, I'm a mark for scenes in anime when hands reach out to each other but don't quite connect! I'm an Ikuhara fan, sue me.
  8. "Velonica" (Aqua Timez)
youtube
This is the first great example on this list of a classic trope in Bleach openings: The Pose. It's no secret that Tite Kubo draws not so much to tell stories (though he can do that on occasion) but to showcase characters wearing cool outfits while they do cool things. This opening wrings everything it can out of the cast of the show standing in exaggerated poses while the camera swings from one angle to another. And it works! The bit of the Vizards being swallowed up by darkness, followed by Urahara's hat tip, has been lodged in my brain since seeing this.
  7. "Ichirin no Hana" (High and Mighty Color)
youtube
More poses! The main cast looking very tired and noble as they stand on the battlefield. Shunsui's sword kata. Screaming vocals. When I asked the barista at the coffee shop today for his favorite Bleach opening, this was his answer; the harsh sound of the Soul Society arc's grand finale. It's a great pick, but the effects are a bit dated for me in 2020. Byakuya's special attack in particular screams early 2000s CG.
  6. "Shojo S" (SCANDAL)
youtube
More outrageous poses from your favorite characters, except that you also have Rukia, Orihime and Rangiku doing a choreographed dance! I wasn't sure what to make of this sequence when I first saw it, but it's risen higher and higher in my estimation with each successive watch. Now I'm at the point where I'd say this is the Bleach opening I initially underrated the most (though there's some real classics coming down the pike!)
  5. "After Dark" (Asian Kung-Fu Generation)
youtube
Bleach openings can be maximalist, so I find it fascinating how restrained this one is. Ichigo's friends running in the desert, the repetition of symbols juxtaposed to flaming credits, and a black-and-white super-cool layout of Aizen's war chamber. That's it. But set to the riffs of all-time great Japanese popular rock band Asian Kung-Fu Generation, that's all you really need.
  4. "D-technoLife" (UVERworld)
youtube
This is the Bleach opening that defines the whole series for many folks. The theme song to the start of the Soul Society arc, it harnesses the band UVERworld (still putting out songs for shonen anime even today!) to a carnival of non-stop forward momentum that keeps topping itself with cool characters and fight sequences. Within its specific niche of early 2000s anime openings about shonen heroes determinedly running toward the camera, this one's never been topped. But it's not my personal favorite, so I'm putting it at number 4! The scene where Yourichi takes a bite out of Soi Fon's sword and holds it between their teeth is outrageously good, though.
  3. "*~Asterisk~" (Orange Range)
youtube
It's fascinating in retrospect how little Bleach's first opening actually has to do with what happens in Bleach. We don't see much in the way of hollows or shinigami, and the only swordfighting we're given is a brief few seconds of Ichigo fighting some interchangable bad guys in kimono. Instead we're given a vibe: Ichigo's friends wearing stylish clothes straight from the manga while the camera darts from one angle to another, Orihime and her friends spray-painting the title of the theme song on the screen, the camera revolving endlessly around Ichigo as he stands in the middle of the city. The promise of this sequence was eventually crushed beneath a never-ending tide of new characters and concepts as the series collapsed under its own weight... but for me and my friends, watching this opening relentlessly on YouTube as teenagers, it convinced us of Bleach's effortless cool. The best first Bleach opening.
2. "Ranbu no Melody" (SID ❤)
youtube
Like the previous opening, "Ranbu no Melody" is notable as much for what it doesn't show as for what it does. We see Ichigo, the hero of the story, for only a few seconds. Instead of our heroes running endlessly toward the camera, we are given the slow unravelling of reality by invisible forces that repeatedly squish and stretch the aspect ratio and blast the viewer with impossibly fast, overlaid images. The brainchild of Masashi Ishihama, one of the best directors of opening sequences working today, this one works as both a horrifying short film of dramatic climax and as a sneakily crafted foreshadowing-laden promise to longtime fans of Bleach that the story has been building to this arc from the very beginning. The best opening.
  1. "Rolling Star" (YUI)
youtube
As a child, I would watch the first six openings of Bleach over and over on YouTube. I loved the first, and the second, and the third. But the one I would return to over and over again, even though it came from a section of the series that I never reached myself, was "Rolling Star." Seen in retrospect, it's a synthesis of all the aspects that made Bleach openings memorable. It's stylish, rendering Ichigo's hometown as a neon-lit sunset hangout where battles secretly play out just around the corner. It's just a bit scary, with Ichigo duelling his masked evil self as traumatic future events are carefully foreshadowed. But more than anything, this opening sells a closeness between the main cast as they eat together and fight together. A careful juxtaposition between the high school gang of friends who were way cooler than you'd ever be, and the supernatural terrror just barely poking out from beneath the surface.
This opening was also directed by Masashi Ishihama, though the previous listed entry represents a more concentrated form of his style. "Ranbu no Melody"'s sequence may very well be superior from an animation perspective, but from my point of view, "Rolling Star" is and will always will be the best Bleach opening. And the song's a banger, so there's that!
What is your personal Bleach opening ranking? Did I underrate "D-technoLife"? Is Bleach more or less cool than Sonic Adventure 2's "Escape from the City?" Let us know in the comments!

And so here it is, nine anime series that are basically what calls out to me either over the years or in recent memory. These are the series that really move me, that excite me, that tickles me, or more.
There were many other series I had in consideration, a number at 35, then dwindled down to 26. None of these are in any particular order, although Maid Dragon is centered is the truly odd one out of all the others. Focusing on these for the moment, let’s try to describe each one and why they are here:
Kekkai Sensen: Kekkai Sensen was a series that filled me with joy every day I ever watched it. The OP, the series itself, was just a dazzling ride that you could almost watch without subtitles and still have fun. It’s just a really good series and I really am excited for the next season
Black Blood Brothers: The most unfortunate anime to ever be made. It’s slick, it’s well written, fully realized, and was totally banking on getting a second season. But then Studio TAC fell apart and I will NEVER see more Black Blood Brothers because nobody fucking cares about this series. Series was based on a Light Novel as well before Light Novel adaptations were such a red flag.
Hellsing (Ultimate OVA): The great thing about 3x3′s is the fact I don’t have to question whether Hellsing is my number one anime or not, thus removing the pressure a top ten list would bring and thus removing the question of whether anything may be better than Hellsing (in my eyes). The 13 episode tv series color my eyes red with blood lust as did the manga. The OVA series is just a masterfully crafted series overall based on Hirano’s highly influential series. Animation quality does skimp a bit in later OVA’s with the use of 3DCG in certain unimportant scenes, but it’s still a fantastic adaptation that does well where it truly counts.
Fullmetal Alchemist (2003): This needs a very clear distinction here, I’m not talking about Brotherhood. I haven’t seen Brotherhood. However, even if I did, I don’t think Brotherhood would have the same impact the first adaptation has. What the first adaptation did was plant the seeds to an interest in anime in my head, sorta (Inuyasha is a little more to blame and AMV Hell 3 made the bamboo sprout). But even then, it’s a certain genius in writing. The series does not fully feel like it bullshits itself with the anime original writing, at least not fully. It still does an admirable job in continuing with what it can and giving us a fantastic anime series in its own right.
Kobayashi’s Maid Dragon: This anime nearly did not make the list. It was nearly sacrificed. However, as I was writing about the pain of removing it from the list, I realized something: I felt way too much regret in that decision. I knew I wasn’t making the right choice, one of the rare moments I was able to listen to instinctive reason in my life. It took down “Angel Beats!”, which while a great series, I felt I only kept it on because of the fact that it was such a feels trip. Kobayashi is like Kekkai Sensen in that I was in love with it every episode of the way. It was fun, it was engaging, and it was highly memorable. AND IT HAS NOT BEEN A FULL YEAR SINCE IT FIRST AIRED. It’s that good of a series.
Black Lagoon: This also accounts for Roberta’s Blood Trail as well, which is a fantastic addition, it doesn’t even feel like there was a gap of time between the second season and that. Black Lagoon is very well paced, well written, and well animated. There are moments of CG used in the series that is brilliantly blended with the 2D Animation that I can not complain about it at all. While it’s level of violence is in no way over that of Hellsing’s, it does have a way in its writing and character development that, I hate to admit, makes it leaps and bounds better.
Darker than Black (Season 1): Not a big fan of the second season to be honest. I do like the second season, but there’s so much changed. The musics changed drastically, something about the writing feels off, and I just don’t know. I’d kill for a third season. But the first season is just magical though. Well animated very interesting, and just a pleasure to watch.
Code Geass (Season 1): Another situation where I like the first season more than the second. But more so here. I kinda forgive the second season to a degree, but even still I wish they had kept the tone and age rating they had in the first season. Funny enough, I originally did not like Code Geass. I dropped it after the first episode. But then I gave it a second shot and was absolutely in love. I’m big sucker for military anime, watching small forces take on bigger forces with expert strategy and seeing the carnage set in as victory draws in closer. The second season sort of does this, but not as well as the first. Third season hype is real though.
Shingeki no Bahamut (Season 1): This anime was a pleasant surprise. It’s beautifully animated, but what’s more is that it’s writing is very well done. It’s based on a mobile game of all things and does a splendid job in just going from there. This basically plays out like a D&D game that I’d love to be in. I love this series ever so much, and the second season is just as good as the first so far.
Now with all that out of the way, let’s touch on some runner ups. This isn’t an exhaustive list, just ones that cross my mind or ones I feel I do need to mention. And they are:
Tumblr media
Angel Beats
This series nearly made the cut. It was a beautiful looking anime with some gut busting comedy in it as well. But as I kept thinking about it on the list, I realized that to a degree, I was only putting it on here because of the fact it had a feels factor. Sure, I think of this series a lot, and certainly it has a major impact on me, but there’s something about it that brings it down. It could have been a potentially far greater series, but I feel like the writers were a tad all over the place when they made this series. They were lucky to have actually made it as good as they did.
Tumblr media
Highschool of the Dead
It’s a favorite for sure, and it’s a series I am constantly defending and arguing the merits over cause everyone wants to simply complain about this series and the amount of sexual fanservice in it.
Or they bring up this scene
Tumblr media
As far as I remember, that scene is not in the manga. The scene of a bullet passing through boobs is not in the manga at all. It’s anime original. Thus I’ve concluded that the series director, Tetsuo Araki, was doing what he could just to make this series more talked about. I’ve written a post on the matter before.
Put simply, I don’t give a shit or have much issue with those complaints. The series does well to have people killing zombies with gratuitously overpowered weapons. There’s a fucking character named after the author of Hellsing, Kouta Hirano (Hirano Kouta?). Fucking Black Lagoon names a bowling alley after him as its nod to influence. This series? They make him a character AND make him a Gun Otaku. The manga most likely knew its priorities though. The anime had marketing on the mind. And sex sells along with controversy.
Tumblr media
Fate Zero and Fate/Stay Night: UBW
I like this series a lot. I remember just being so hyped to talk about Fate Zero every week on a forum I use to frequent. Sure, nobody actually TALKED to me, it was just forum posts really, but I loved just talking about it. I didn’t have anyone to talk to though. One friend was so detached from anime he’d have just talked about how he had a much better idea for a series twenty years ago. Another friend just kept calling the series “Fake Steak Knife”.
Zero is kinda understandable though for a drop. Good as it was, it was just a good addition. I had read F/SN earlier that year it began airing, so it was great to get more Fate in the form of prequel material. But the prequel isn’t astounding compared to my personal likes. It does a good hell of justice for Fate though, that’s for sure.
Then there’s UBW. This one is kinda painful, but not enough to justify putting it back on the 3x3. UBW is my personal favorite route in F/SN, so seeing it be the adaptation they used for the Ufotable adaptation was just amazing. But there’s something about the adaptation I have faults with, and in a way it’s those faults that make me feel that the original VN’s are much better works than the adaptations ever will be.
Tumblr media
I watched this series recently some time last year on recommendation from a friend. That recommendation, among many, confidently put faith in this man as a man of cultured tastes.
Why didn’t this get on the 3x3 though? Good as it is, it’s not THAT good. It’s great, but not THAT great. What it is is a video game adaptation to anime that does an astounding job at being an adaptation of a video game. In fact, it probably would have been better if it wasn’t a video game adaptation and instead an original anime series about gangsters.
Honorable Mention
Tumblr media
Kara no Kyoukai
There’s a lot of anime that could make the list of Honorable Mention for any number of reasons. These would be series that didn’t even get to compete on a check list, but was listed somewhere during the years
Kara no Kyoukai was so iffy of a movie series though that it didn’t even make the listing by years. It didn’t even get fully considered.
My opinions of this series has made an absolute 180 since 2015. Certainly though, I still love it. Yes, it has an impact on me. The movies are gorgeous and the music does well to support the visuals. But the writing is just questionable to the point of unsatisfying. Of all of Kinoko’s work to end, this is the one that is the most unsatisfying. So much so that I don’t even want a sequel to it because I feel that a sequel would ruin things from a logical perspective and be some weird pandering to hard core fans on another.
To reiterate, yes I still do love this series, but not as much as I once did. Ryougi Shiki is just an absolutely badass character, both in personality in design, and the music for when she fights is just spectacular.
But it appears something in Kinoko’s writing translates poorly to the screen that makes this series feel almost boring to me in certain films, while other films I’m far more engaged.
My favorite film is honestly the third one, “Remaining Sense of Pain”. I don’t know why, mainly because my memory of these movies despite a rewatch last year is hazy as hell. It may just be because the fight between Shiki and Asagami Fujino.
Although I have to admit, it would be interesting to see any other character from this series appear in some later part of the Nasuverse timeline. But by the time Fate/Stay night happens, Shiki’s a married woman leading a peaceful life. I’d rather let her have her peace to be honest, as with every other character in the series.
Really, I just want a proper Tsukihime anime series with every route carefully adapted to animation. But I can dream and sell souls, can’t I?
