Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
If you see a worm crawling along on the ground, take a closer look; it might actually be a worm lizard! Due to their pink or purple coloring, reduced or absent limbs, and rudimentary eyes, members of the group Amphisbaenia bear a striking resemblance to earth worms. However, their closest relatives are actually the wall lizards in the family Lacertidae.

Slavoia darevskii was a lizard that lived in what is now Mongolia and Kazakhstan during the Late Cretaceous, about 85-70 million years ago.
Around 12cm long ~(4.75"), it had a compact skull, small eyes, a short neck, shovel-like hands, an elongated body and slightly reduced hind limbs – all features that indicate it was a burrowing animal, digging tunnels and feeding on underground invertebrates.
Its exact relationships are uncertain, but recent studies have suggested it was an early amphisbaenian, representing a point in the group's evolution before the full loss of their legs and the development of their extremely long worm-like shape.

Amphibuary day 26: Honorary! I decided to go with one of my favorite reptiles, the Mexican mole lizard! They remind me of caecilians, hence the honorary-ness. Mexican mole lizards are quite strange- neither snakes or lizards, they fall under the small category of Amphisbaenia! So, so cool.

Amphisbaenia /æmfɪsˈbiːniə/ (called amphisbaenians or worm lizards) is a group of usually legless squamates, comprising over 200 extant species. Amphisbaenians are characterized by their long bodies, the reduction or loss of the limbs, and rudimentary eyes. As many species have a pink body and scales arranged in rings, they have a superficial resemblance to earthworms.
okay so it is still reptiles.....

Cryptober Day 7: Mongolian Death Worm.
Tumblr media
The Mongolian Death Worm is described as a large, blood-red worm measuring anywhere between 2-7 feet; in short, it looks a lot like an intestine, hence its native name "Olgoi-Khorkhoi," meaning "intestine worm." It is said to have the ability to spit a corrosive yellow saliva and to generate blasts of electricity, however the latter power is thought of as being folkloric by the nomads of the Gobi.
Legends say that as the creature begins to attack, it raises half its body out of the sand and starts to inflate until it explodes, releasing its acidic yellow poison all over its prey. The poison is so venomous that the prey dies instantly. Livestock and humans are supposedly its main prey.
Because Mongolia had been under Soviet control until 1990, very little was known about the Death Worm here in the West. In recent years, investigators have begun to look for evidence of the creature’s existence. Ivan Mackerle, one of the leading Loch Ness Monster detectives, studied the region and interviewed many Mongolian people about the worm. Due to the sheer number of sightings and strange deaths that have occurred, he theorizes that the Death Worm was more than just a myth.
Nobody is entirely sure what the worm could actually be. The possibility of it being a real worm is slim, because the Gobi Desert is too hot for annelids to survive. Some have suggested it might be a skink, but they have little legs and scaly skin whereas witnesses claim that the worm is limb-less and smooth bodied. One likely explanation is that the deathworm is a new species of amphisbaenia or worm-lizard, a group of burrowing reptiles. Although the native Mongolian people are convinced of the Death Worm’s nature, like with most cryptids it will take many more years of research and evidence to satisfy the world’s scientific community.
Also, fun fact: The Graboids from the movie series Tremors were heavily based on the Death Worm.

Swedish Phrases Explained - Special episode! Linguistics, science, and words not meaning the same thing.
Ödla.
Tumblr media
So, I decided to add this little thing I discovered into a tag I used to post with - but the last one was around 8 years ago. Usually they are Swedish phrases, and now it is "just" a word, but it is a little bit involved so I think this works. So, uh. Revival time.
And what I found out is that the translation for the word "lizard" to Swedish is "ödla". However... scientifically it is inaccurate. And it is because the Swedish scientific classification is the same as the English one - using cladistics and all that - but the Swedish one is more specific.
Because scientifically, a "lizard" is the Order of Squamata, which are part of the Reptilia Class. Now, Sweden has ödlor. But they are not Squamata. In Sweden, "lizards" are actually the Suborder Lacertilia which is part of Squamata, but not all of Squamata.
In Sweden, we have specified lizards as being all the Squamates with the exception of snakes. Yes, scientifically speaking - in the English speaking world - snakes are lizards. But not in Sweden. Not even including the lizards without legs, that are not technically snakes, namely the worm lizards Amphisbaenia.
Instead, the Order Squamata are called "fjällbärande kräldjur". Or, translated, "scaled reptiles".
So! For visual clarification...
Tumblr media
So, now I have learned you without anyone asking for it, that English lizards are not always Swedish lizards, but all Swedish lizards are always English lizards. Sort of. Kind of.

Temozolomide Sticking with and also Stopping Amongst Sufferers Together with Diabetes type 2 symptoms: A new Retrospective Cohort Review
If the design demonstrates profitable along with cost-effective, equivalent surgery could be used to enhance the proper many patients along with unrestrained hypertension #Link# . (C) 3 years ago Elsevier Corporation. Most privileges earmarked. The entire nucleotide series with the mitochondrial (mt) genomes regarding about three species of squamate animals: Blanus cinereus (Amphisbaenidae), Anguis fragilis (Anguidae), along with Tarentola mauritanica (Geckkonidae) were identified over. The particular deduced amino acid sequences of all 12 mt protein-coding family genes had been blended into a one information collection as well as phylogenetic associations amid principal squamate lineages were reviewed under optimum likelihood (Milliliter) along with Bayesian Inference (Bisexual). Within just Squamata, the monophyly of Iguanidae, Anguimorpha, Amphisbaenia, Gekkota, Serpentes, and also Acrodonta gotten higher record support with both approaches. It really is especially dazzling that may be the 1st molecular examination that retrieves the monophyly associated with Scincomorpha (including Scincidae, Xantusiidae, Cordylidae, along with Lacertidae), eventhough it is only recognized inside the Bayesian examination, in fact it is sensitive to alterations in your outgroup (notice under). Phylogenetic interactions on the list of principal squamate lineages can't become fixed with #Link# Milliliter but received powerful assistance with BI (over 95%). The particular fresh refurbished phylogeny regarding squamates does not offer the Iguania-Scleroglossa divided. Acrodonta as well as Serpentes type a clade, the cousin group of the remaining squamate lineages. Within these, Gekkota had been the initial branching away, then Amphisbaenia, plus a clade including Anguimorpha because sibling group of Scincomorpha + Iguanidae. The restored topology differed drastically through in the past described ideas upon squamate connections, along with the family member aftereffect of utilizing distinct outgroups, body's genes, and taxon samplings were explored. The sister class partnership involving Serpentes + Acrodonta, along with their family member basal situation within Squamata could possibly be as a result of long-branch fascination doll. Phylogenetic associations amongst Scincomorpha, Amphisbaenia. and Anguimorpha put together to get somewhat uncertain. Long term enhancing of squamate phylogenetic connections would depend about locating snake as well as acrodont varieties with sluggish mt transformative rates, guaranteeing comprehensive taxon coverage regarding squamate diversity, along with including far more fischer body's genes along with proper evolutionary costs. Have you ever heard the tale of the runaway ✨magical✨unicorn phallus? Yeah, me neither. I also never heard of these Bipes aka Mexican Mole Lizards until my recent trip to Baja ~ thank you 🙏 @islandsseas . Another case of truth is stranger than fiction: due to their secretive lifestyle little is understood of these unbelievably cool creatures. Found only in Mexico, these unique reptiles use their forelegs to burrow through soil like a mole. The hind legs have completely disappeared! Why are they Pepto-Bismol pink?! What is the evolutionary advantage of this adaptation? Do they pick up carotenoids in their diet like flamingoes? So many '?????????????' 💕🌸🦄 #islandsandseas2017 #Bipes #amphisbaenia #curiosity #lizard #discovery #pink (at Baja California, Mexico)
