Entirely subjective yadda yadda. Organized by favs in each category. No numbered lists anymore, tumblr be buggn'.

End of Aug Start Sept 2023

Ongoing Series - Thai

Laws of Attraction (Sat iQIYI) 8fin - Oh the DRAMA. Why does the insane ex (my true love) remind me of the cartel leader from Romancing the Stone? Even the sides got HEA! It was fucking great!!!!! Charn remains a bonkers spoiled evil murderous brat with a cruel smile beloved by his one true paladin. Also: post it love note trope! Been a long while my old friend. NO SINGING!!!!! I do love that wedding jacket frock coat cape thing Charn wore.

In conclusion: This is a great gay suspense thriller with several solid couples, fun plot, killer characters, queer rep, and a happy ending. Charn may be my favorite lead character of 2023. However, this show is not entirely BL, more on the fringe, like Manner of Death. Add that to several "singing incidents" and pairs being a little weak in the chemistry arena, and this lands safely in 9/10 territory. It’s tons of fun tho: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I Feel You Linger in the Air (Sat grey) ep 3 of 12 - This show is getting more and more lakorn each ep. Apparently the straights are having a class divide arranged marriage crisis. Who cares? Our boy is ALWAYS in trouble. Crazy that he has to save the people who betrayed him in a previous life - but I guess he chose revenge! That's unexpected.

Had to switch to grey and couldn’t find a working rip. It was frustrating and I wouldn’t have bothered except I like this show so much. Still, it means no screen caps because the rez is naff.

Dangerous Romance (Fri YT) ep 3 of 12 - Uh oh. Kang wants to save Sailom and be his hero. The fact that K’s Pa puts no pressure on him whatsoever, makes me wonder if K's Ma committed suicide or something? It’s definitely the opposite parental dynamic we normally see in BL. I have to say, the pacing is great in the show. And the acting is on point. It’s really great.

Hidden Agenda (Sun YT) ep 8 of 12 - these two just kiss well. I mean not "rip your clothes off Taiwan-style," but sweet young boyfriends-esk. Joke wants to be claimed so bad. It’s great. I enjoyed this ep, unfortunately it looks like we have a manufactured angst drama drop in the next episode. Is this a 10 episode arc? I thought it was 12. It’s odd to have doom happening next episode already.

Only Friends (Sat YT) ep 4 of 10 - Back story time! Ray and Mew are HARD to watch. Incestuous friend group gay is the worst. Omg I got such QAF vibes from this ep. Nick Boston Sand chats = very throw back 90s gay soaps.

Location game moment: Top's hotel room is also Chan’s apartment in Laws Of Attraction.

Naughty Babe (Sat YT) ep 1 of 8 - Ooo. Est is back! Hi handsome. Head of security suits you. Please lead out the new Waterboyy remake? You’re perfect for the role. (If it must happen.) Yi’s Pa is GREAT. Please give daddy a nice boy? Could that be our secondary couple for this series?

Meanwhile, with the leads (sorry I was distracted by daddy) we got us an arranged marriage, run away bride, and an amnesia trope. Put in a secret baby and it's squarely 1980's Harlequin. Will there be Vikings? Sex herbs? Pirates? Dub con?

Be Mine Super Star (Mon Viki) ep 9 of 12 - Again with lovely sex scenes, it’s just the plot stringing them together is frayed. Also don’t fuck in an onsen. Both yech and ouch.

That goes for all y’all.

Wedding Plan (Wed YT & iQIYI) ep 7fin - Trash watch here! Honestly this was an okay ending, I’m not mad at it. If you can tolerate Mame and liars (kinda the same thing) you’ll be fine with this show.

Summation: An innocent wedding planner falls haplessly and hopelessly in love with a groom who relentlessly pursued him, even though he’s about to marry someone else. A somewhat lackluster mame offering with less of the usual stellar chemistry, but all of the usual lies and manipulation. 7/10

Love in Translation (Sat iQIYI) ep 3 of 10 - I skip everything to do with Tammy and it’s fine. There’s only about 20 minutes of fine but that’s more than enough. On the bright side. So far. No singing.

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) ep 2 of 24 eps - Cassanova Begins Part 2. Aw. It was sad. Another variation on the “my ghost boyfriend” trope (usually sad). 2/10 I don't do sad BL.

Next up is Merry Go Round featuring the pair from Destiny Seeker (we likey) who want to marry each other, but end up fake engaged to the same woman. Beard squared? Looks silly.

Crazy Handsome Rich (Sun Gaga) ep 1 of 10 - There are 2 things I like about this. I bet you can guess what they are.

There wasn’t enough of either in this first ep. ALSO the captions, sound effects, and voice over are truly next level bad. Utterly atrocious.

The 2 leads fucking around in the end credits was the funniest part of the whole show.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Jun & Jun (Korea Thur Viki) ep 7 of 8 - I am confused and frustrated about what the communication delay is between the two Juns. It feels artificial and narratively manufactured. But since this is a short form KBL and I know it will be resolved quickly, I’m not as annoyed as I would be if this were Thai BL. Still it feels audience manipulative. I also feel sorry for Simon. BUT it looks like it’ll be a sweet boyfriends final episode.

Stay By My Side (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 10fin - Omg they’re so cute!!! Taiwan the purveyors of ultimate sappy gay domesticity. I am going to miss having these to nonsencing all over my dash.

This show was an interesting take on the "ghost boyfriend" trope. About a boy who is tormented by hearing the dead, except when he is around one other boy - desperation+proximity = love. Unfortunately, the story was erratic and waffled about. While the leads turned in solid performances and the sappy domesticity was off the charts, it never really had the strength of the narrative convictions such a strong concept should have supplied. Highly rewatchable and enjoyable for that sappy domesticity but not a whole lot more. Still I always give extra credit for the diabetes-inducing sugar content and rewatch capacity. 8/10

Kisseki: Dear to Me (Taiwan Tues Viki & iQIYI) eps 3 of 13(?) - I love the punching thing - there is a lot of violent flirting in this show. I’m not mad about it. Ugh, poor thing has real abandonment issues. And now trust issues. I see why we’re getting 12-14 eps. This gonna be MESSY.

Meanwhile, does EVERYONE have a guest cameo? Not that I’m complaining. Hi BLIHID boys! Now I need to rewatch that show.

Love Class Season 2 (Korea Fri Viki) eps 7-8 of 10 - Oh my God the next morning w/ couple 2 was so darn cute. They are all such terrible flirts with each other. Honestly, this show makes me laugh more than any other BL currently airing. I’m not sure it is meant to be as funny as I find it. While couple 3 (the mature characters) is by far my favorite, I actually think they don’t work with the other two pairs, they feel superfluous to the show. I like the show better because they’re in it, but it feels like two different BL‘s stuck together. KBL certainly can’t handle more than two couple threads at the same time.

Why R U? (Korea Wed iQIYI) eps 3-4 of 8 - Ugh. I am such a sucker for the FighterTutor dynamic. Why so good? Uh oh. Real kiss! KBL you're spoiling us. But, isn’t sad-seme-hyung dating some chick? Argh. Poor Sunwoo. This show is even worse at repping Fighter's character sympathetically. Who knew that was possible?

My Personal Weatherman AKA Taikan Yoho (Japan Sat Gaga) ep 3 of 8 - The date episode! Even Japan is doing it now. And these two who have been living/fucking together for ages still dance around each other like junior high kids. I gotta say, I watch this one twice because Vicki has different subs from Gaga. I feel like it’s easier to understand if I watch two different translations of the same script. But it’s still quite a taciturn piece.

Minato's Laundromat Season 2 AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry Season 2 (Japan Thu Gaga) ep 8 of 12 - Sides are great. It was mostly a cute ep with tiny bits of Progress and a proper Confession. I miss Shin’s siblings. And then… the much loathed amnesia trope. Really?

Everyone say it with me: Must you, Japan?

Stay Still (Hong Kong Tues YouTube) ep 5fin - It ended happier than I was expecting. Optimistic for one couple, and most likely optimistic for the other.

Summation: What to say about this offering from Hong Kong? It’s different, a mix of early CBL, Taiwanese shorts, and Pinoy visuals. It felt like the story was 2 independent shorts that had been lengthen and then stuck together, and I wish they'd been approached as separate and tighter entities. Nevertheless, this was a complex little piece, interesting in a sweaty grungy way, with a certain aura of queer authenticity that made it simultaneously tense, unpredictable, and refreshing. I’m not sure I would necessarily call it BL, but any county’s early foray into the genre usually starts out this way, so perhaps nascent BL? Worth watching, especially if you enjoy stuff from the Philippines and Taiwan. 7/10

In case you missed it

Dinosaur Love ended its run but the final 2 eps are behind a paywall. Word on the street is they aren't good anyway (shocker) so I'm marking it as DNF and moving on with my life. If I can find em grey I'll watch 'em merely so I can give it a rating, but I can't imagine it will get more than 5/10. Seriously, do not bother.

9/15 Bump Up Business AKA Bump Up Project (Korea movie) suspected cinema release? I don't know much about what's going on. Last status update. Love story between a trainee who is about to debut and a celebrity from the same agency. Kpop boy group OnlyOneOf has signed up to star in this idol-based BL (based on a webtoon). They’ve been auditioning for this since Libido IMHO. You can watch me chronicle their BL MV series in this post. It’s from Idol Romance who will do sad but can do good kisses (Wish You, Nobleman Ryu, Once Again, Kissable Lips, Poongduck 304, Tasty Florida, Tinted With You).

9/26 I Cannot Reach You AKA I Can't Reach You AKA Kimi ni wa Todokanai (Japan ????) - Adapted from the manga, childhood best friends: The cool, smart one who’s good at everything, and his average, dorky friend who struggles. Always by the other’s side, but not together in the way they truly want to be. No matter how hard they try, their hearts cannot reach each other.

9/27 Absolute Zero (Thai iQIYI) - from 2021, Studio Wabi Sabi and New Siwaj finally bring us this “time loop to prevent tragedy” romance. We don’t always get HEAs from them, so I'm on my guard.

Hello, can I ask why do you think there are so many BL ships from BNHA and JJK? Do you also have fav ships from those two series?

I don't mean any negative things to any fan fics writers or fan art artist (thanks so much every one for sharing your hard works in the fandom).

But like, I'm a fan of both series for years now, and I saw them mostly as just platonic (bakudeku, tododeku, kiribaku, satosugu, itafushi, etc). Now, I'm not anti mlm or wlw because I love BL and GL media (manga, manhwa, books, tv series, etc), but I'm kinda hard to enter into shipping. Do you think I'm weird? Or maybe I'm slow in understanding the romantic subtext in those scenes from both series?

My take on it I guess is that people just love shipping characters together. Fandoms low-key thrive on shipping most of the time and especially when it comes to rareships. In my opinion any legal ship can work depending on how someone writes the story so there's that.

Iam not a huge shipper myself and if I do ship stuff I tend to be a multishipper prefering to enjoy multiple amount of contents that people make. MHA has horribly written ships point blank. Sure togaocha could of worked but it doesn't the same with BKDK. Any ships in MHA that were introduced as possibilities also lack any sort of development. This obviously doesn't stop people from shipping and developing their own ships (as they rightfully should) but canon wise there isn't much going for MHA

When it comes to Jujutsu kaisen akutami already acknowledged that he isn't that good at writing romance so he chooses not to excpet of already established ships like hakari x kirarka or tragic ships like mechamiwa. Even when it comes to that people do view stgs and itafushi as heavily romantically coded and I can see where theyre coming from as there is some heavy romantic subtexts.

Overall, Iam not much of a romantic shipper myself I just love platonic bonds and ships. For some reason I find that platonic ships and bonds are just better written and can connect with the audience a whole lot more easily and better compared to romance. Iam not much of a romance fan so I don't consume much of that side of media. Iam not sure if it's only me but stories centering around one ship get really boring for me whereas other stories that go out to critique stuff or explore ideas are more enjoyable.

Also no I really don't think you're weird I do somewhat relate to you tho.

I don't think MHA has any romantic subtexts however I definitely do see the Jujutsu kaisen romantic subtexts.

Writers usually give readers freedom to decide how they view things. Iam not much of a romance type of reader so I just like viewing a lot of things as platonic just because I think platonic relationships are overall stronger and better then romance ones

Rain was SO READY too - he closed his eyes as soon as Phayu's lips touched his. infinity/10 sweetest first kiss. It looks very aesthetically pleasing with the blurred out, neutral background.

Phayu says thank you to Rain here. At first, I thought he was thanking him for the kiss, or for coming to see him. Now, I think it's probably for everything - thank you for meeting me, thank you for making me like you, thank you for not running away, thank you for meeting my expectations, and thank you for liking me back. And then we barely get time to recover from the sweetness of that kiss before Phayu is giving us this adorable face (which is my second favorite of Phayu's faces)

Listen, I know this shot is for dramatic purposes and that Rain looks truly beautiful in the rain, but you can't tell me that he and P' Saifah haven't exchanged numbers yet. Rain totally could've waited in the house or even in his car, which he definitely drove there in. My dumb son

It's ok, Phayu is here though!! And Rain gets to tell him the good news!! Phayu seems more concerned about how wet Rain is though, and for good reason. He's probably watched a few BLs so he knows that the male leads often have the constitution of sickly Victorian children when it comes to the rain. He's rightly concerned for Rain's health.

Also we get the switch from Pum to Rain (the way Rain refers to himself) during this convo! I did not notice this on my own and will try to find and link the person's post who did. To my understanding, this is a more personal way of referring to oneself and it's yet another way Phayu and Rain are closer now! They're about to get real close tho ;)

Rain's death-grip on Phayu counter is probably up to 10 now too. I don't think I've said this before but Noeul has really nice hands. They're good for holding a certain someone's face and neck:

I was going to tell you all a story here and make you wait a bit longer, but I'll post it separately. As for these two, they literally did not wait any more. From here on out this is entirely self-indulgent. Enjoy!

I absolutely ADORE how they framed this scene with the curtains and the rain and the soft blue lighting that looks like moonlight. I also really like Phayu's hand placement in this entire bathtub sequence. Additionally, Rain gets a good amount of active participation in during these kisses (BossNoeul said dead fish kisses whomst?? we don't know her). It's another indicator of how happy and comfortable Rain is to be there

Another thing I've already mentioned is that I completely am in love with the way BossNoeul portrayed the way that PhayuRain look at each other. I have never been as convinced that the on-screen couple is in love as I am with these two. Also I am counting this as a headpat even though it's more of a cheekbone stroke :)

Again, they look so comfy and I love how softly their eyes slip closed when they kiss. Also reiterating that I love Phayu's hand placement here - it's like he's cradling Rain in his palms

Hi...Do you know what anime you'll watch this season?

My top 3 fav this season are :

- Tadaima, Okaeri (wholesome BL, also one of my comfort read)

-Black Butler : Public School Arc (yes the ship is problematic but you cannot deny the shipper when you watch it. I'm not shipping SebasCiel but I'm not anti too. Their canon relationship is complicated but great story)

-Wind Breaker (bucchigiri but way better and loveable mc)

Hey hey ( ◜‿◝ )♡, Literally following all of these already.

Black Butler was definitely a must, since the announcement dropped sometime last year I've been unable to keep it out of my mind. It's understandable not everyone will ship them but I personally have missed Sebaciel shenanigans so much and seeing favorite characters like Soma (although with less melanin than I remember lol what =_=) in the recent episode just made me so happy.

As for Tadaima Okaeri, I was looking forward to it for a long time, so far I'm not disappointed and it's definitely so fucking cute. All I'm saying is...if any country needs to push baby making propaganda they should go for this instead of the trashy het stuff, I don't make the rules.

I have almost no thoughts on Wind Breaker. It's definitely an upgrade but after the disappointment that was Bucchigiri, I've began to keep my expectations for Delinquent shows low (Tokyo revengers and IWGP are yet to be topped for me). It's not bad but do feel like it's lacking substance in some areas and trying too hard. The main character isn't a bitch tho so I know there's hope for it yet.

To me this year's winter season had way more exciting stuff but there are a number of other anime I'd love to recommend for this spring.

Karasu wa aruji wa Erabanai (The Raven does not choose it's Master) Is almost like the apothecary diaries, but with magic, and without the herbs and medicine...but it has the court politics so yay (｡•̀ᴗ-)✧ taking place in a world where people can turn into three legged ravens called Yatagurasu, Yukiya after causing some trouble for his family is taken to serve the most special of specials crown prince who is to become the next Kin'u after picking a bride from the four daughters of the clan heads sent to him. So basically every gay historical romance Wattpad story lol. Unfortunately this isn't a bl and though you can probably tell the prince will get married in future episodes, from these three eps, I think it establishes the focus will be on him and Yukiya, which, I couldn't ask for more.

Another Recommendation is Kaijuu no. 8, I have no words (in a good way). Just spacial forces slaying gigantic monsters while the main character suddenly becomes one of those monsters and has to still join the special force that at some point will kill him if they find out, or if they have found out they realize he's different from other monsters and can help them win the war for humanity *aot flashbacks ಥ‿ಥ* What I'm trying to say is that... it's good. I think it's funny with characters that have to potential to reel you in. I've been told the manga is pretty average tho but we'll see.

Touken Ranbu Kai is...something, I don't watch anime just for pretty boys but even if I didn't like the plot of this one I'd stick with it just for the guys. Beautiful character designs, the lore feels very fresh and intriguing and as well. There's a lot of philosophical topics I think the show has potential to dive into and I'm excited to see where we go moving forward from the three eps out currently.

Last but not least, there's Sentai Daishikkaku (Go Go Loser Ranger) I really don't want to spoil anything but let me just say, it's a brilliant subversion of the Power Rangers narrative. The sound track is fun while also hitting hard, and the characters definitely leave you wanting to know more about them and the world they're in. Definitely give it a try, I don't think you'll regret it.

Got a bit carried away with this one hahah, welp that's all my recs for now. Aside from my shipping stuff I'll probably talk about any of these every now and then, my top three right now tho are definitely Black Butler, Sentai Daishikkaku and Karasu wa aruji wa Erabanai. Anon has amazing taste but I'm a very big action and supernatural fan at heart so I'm based.

Depending on how disappointing or exciting things get along the line this list might change but unfortunately my feelings don't help the state of my FAL ranking so yeah wish me luck (〒﹏〒)

everyone x Captain Marvelous (GokaiRed) is canon and real so do with that what you will. I especially like Alata (GoseiRed) x Marvelous tho, not just because they're handover buddies but because they genuinely do match very well. The Gokaigers are insanely OP yeah but the Goseigers are pretty much the only team that could take them 1:1 even with all of their powers imo just because THEY'RE so OP too lol. That aside, Alata's bright and pure literally angelic but NOT stupid or foolish personality complements Marvelous's wild, reckless, morally questionable one so well.

pretty sure GaoRed and AbaRed never met but kakega is 1) a really funny ship name and 2) they're both similar enough that they would have a lot in common 3) different enough they wouldn't be turned off by the mirror effect I think. And I think Ryouga deserves a man who would know how to look after his daughter. Not that Kakeru (weird calling him that and not just Red) would instantly be the world's best dad, but being a veterinarian shows a level of maturity and care that lbr the very vast majority of reds are missing lol. Jan (GekiRed) x Sosuke (Go-OnRed) would be entirely fucking stupid and it should happen just because of that.

Takeru (ShinkenRed) x Yamato (ZyuohEagle) are a fair few years apart I know BUT I think zoologist with daddy issues Yamato would do verryyyy well with kitty boy samurai lord :)

not sure if Tatsuya x Naoto (TimeRed x TimeFire) counts as redxred but they ARE both red so I'm counting it. uhhh watch Timeranger or check my recentish posts about it bc holy fucking SHIT dude. They're the proto-Shinji/Ren in many ways but like. even more painful.

not redxred but Lucky (ShishiRed) x Emu (Ex-Aid) 4 eva btw it's so fucking funny that Lucky is the literal only person Emu has had romantic tension with when they met for like 5 seconds and Ex-Aid was basically a BL. AND that nishimen shoot wants to make out with iijima or whatever is going on with their twitter accounts. ghost-aid...

there are definitely others but that will do for now lol

I know it's been a hot sec since Only Friends ended, but I have love your analysis but have some thoughts about Boston's ending in the context of the show's themes. You said in your reflection that it reeks of branded pairing and interference. Could this be the point!

We know Boston is the photographer which has lots of implications for his character and sexuality, but photographers also have a unique interest for directors, and can even be stand-in characters for the director's perspective. Boston's non-monogamous approach to dating estranges him from the clear pairing off of his friends in traditional couple units, as if in a legal marriage, in the same way that a more radical director like jojo might feel in response to the contractual obligations of the branded pairs by studios.

Getting back to the brilliant title of "Only Friends," you could start to see it as a commentary on some of these issues. Only friends can refer to the limits of being excluded from the status of boyfriends, or, in a more official manner, being excluded from the status and benefits privileged through marriage. But we also know that the actors for Boston and Nick were the first chosen by jojo & co before the branded pairs. Only Friends can also refer to these two actors previous roles within the BL genre as supporting cast that lacked the narrative possibility and the contractual obligation to become a couple by the end of the series, to remain only friends to the romantic leads.

Perhaps the ending is supposed to feel empty. There is a veneer of campy happiness to the last scene, but most of the online audience reactions seem to understand that what we felt we saw was a tragedy. Jojo seems too perceptive of a director to have created that reaction by a failure to realize how the viewers would feel about Boston's fall and exclusion. It actually seems really impressive to have what is basically the foundational definition of a comedy (the couples get together in the end) feel so sad--Ton's absence replaced by a picture of what they used to be before the mandatory coupling. Then the guest comes in, played by Mixx, a member of yet another contracted pair. "I booked a single bedroom. I'm here alone." The malevolent theme of the series kicks in as the cast looks from him to one another and offers to be his 'friend,' as if that was allowed. Is it a coincidence that Mixx shared this summer that he'd be taking a break from acting, thus escaping his contractual coupling!

It seems to me like jojo used the guise of the BL genre in 'Only Friends' to critique the genre (and more traditional gay political ideals) and we all felt the pain and disappointment we were supposed to feel about what we're being robbed of.

You're more versed in the genre and jojo's previous works tho so what's your take

I am glad you are interested in my take, but I'm not sure that I have one. I think your read is a perfectly valid one, just as I also think saying this wasn't intentional commentary and GMMTV interfered is a valid one, just as I think saying Jojo and Ninew dropped the ball at the end and this was ultimately their responsibility is valid.

I think it would be based as hell if Jojo and Ninew did what they did at the end of Only Friends and obliterated some of their messaging as commentary against the current BL structures, but I don't think we have a way of knowing that. I think I am generally more forgiving to the narrative and to Jojo and Ninew than others might be, but that doesn't make me correct or other people wrong. I don't think we have any way of knowing what went on behind the scenes, in the writing room, with the directors, with the studio execs to get to where we got. But I have found other pieces of Jojo's more legible in their intent at the end.

Overall my hot take is that ultimately I am glad this show was made, regardless of overall fandom reaction, regardless of how the narrative was perceived, because I think it is important for GMMTV to get more comfortable mixing and matching their branded pairs, to get GMMTV more comfortable with higher heat in their BLs, to give Neo a really difficult role that he absolutely blew out of the water. And while international and tumblr reactions were on the displeased or angry side of the spectrum, I don't know that that was the case domestically, and it did well enough to have a few nominations in the most recent awards show. So regardless of what myself or anyone else thinks about Only Friends, I think it did enough to perhaps show GMMTV proof of concept for general fandom interest in more mature BLs from an intimacy and messy relationship perspective. And, depending on the reactions they saw, maybe it showed them that at the end sticking to the branded pairs ended up hurting the show.

honestly i don't know, i think of actors i really like but i'm not big on their counterparts..? i enjoy it a lot when they mix and match, i don't have anyone i particularly follow.. i will say MaxTul were super powerful, i really appreciate the bonds between a lot of pairs like ForceBook and i think some of them have amazing chemistry like FirstKhao but even though there are a few i would always try to tune in for like OffGun and YinWar, there's no one i can call a fave, i don't think..currently JimmySea are eating it up tho

🎭Most underrated actor: just the Wayufilm crew in general, I see them do fundraiser lives on yt all the time and I don't think they're that well known by the fandom

🧍‍♂️Favorite character: ig it is Karan currently, Tay really made the character shine in a different way than Machida Keita's Kurosawa and i can't get enough of those puppy eyes

15 Day BL Challenge

☆*:.｡. Day 11: Breakup that should have stayed broken up .｡.:*☆

Okay, my main problem for this one was that I didn’t have it in me to go back to some of those shows to double check that they actually do get together/break up/make up but I tried to the best of my recollection. If I got them wrong. well… know I really didn’t want them together.

I will say Yi and Kondiao in Cutie Pie who I think fit the bill on technicality (I have not watched their spin-off series but I do not believe it would warm me up to them). Look, there is nothing that worked for me there. Yi refuses the engage with Kondiao with the stubbornness of a mule on a bad day and for what. Despite the explanations the show provided, there was never a single moment where I could fathom them managing to make their way toward a relationship. There was no trust there, no communication, no sharing of anything, and frankly they always only seemed held together by guilt and responsibility (no matter how hard they tried to make me believe otherwise) and while this could definitely make for a good premise (I do love an arranged marriage that blossom into love), the spark was never there for me.

I am going to throw Pi and Mork from Fish Upon the Sky out there too, tho I have no confidence they do actually get together before the end. I do not like the dynamic in that relationship at all and, sorry to say and despite Pi being a brat (which I do like), is all on Mork’s writing for me. There is no reciprocity between them, Mork keeps secrets, decides what is best for Pi and doesn’t stop pushing until Pi relent, trample all over the limits Pi tries to set up, and while I can enjoy a persistent LI this was just SO MUCH. Keep these two apart.

And then, as a little bonus and because I mentioned the show in an earlier ask so I thought of them, Bon and Duen in My Engineer. I do think they could make it work, ultimately, but MAN we were NOT there by the time they get back together at the end of the show. They both had a lot of work to do on themselves before even thinking of getting back into that, and giving themselves time apart would have been a good idea.

I'm sorry but the crazy hate for top doesn't even make sense at this point. like even in comparison to some other characters he isn't as bad yet they all get treated like innocent meow meows and he gets villanized. repeatedly drunk driving and putting innocent lives in danger? my poor baby :( manipulating a whole scheme to get back at a guy you hate with no concern for how it will destroy others? king behavior! (And tbh no hate to sand I respect what he did lol but there's no need to lie about what it was). recording people having sex and commiting numerous other crimes? he's just in love :/ and I don't even need to get into how Boston can do all the sick shit he does and still be called a "bad bitch." Is top a flawed character with MANY issues he needs to work on? yes absolutely but if you're gonna call him the scum of the universe you sure better do it for all the other characters too is all I'm saying.

although, i don't respect what sand did - i just love him for it lol that man is insane 🤣 he finally did something interesting to me🫢 and the fact that he did it, knowing how much it would hurt ray in the process? just the rotten cherry on top of the shit sundae he served that friend group. now that is messy. and at least he seems to actually understand the gravity of how fucked up what he did was once he saw the consequences, unlike boston😒 who really had the gall to say that he "let" topmew have their happily ever after, after he had tried to sleep with top again and continued to lie to him about mew and ray - only leaving top alone because top finally stood up for himself, pushed him away, and shamed him about it.

the point is that all these characters are flawed; they'd be boring otherwise. that's the case in literally all storytelling. does BL fandom think that all their faves in other series are perfect? no one is perfect.

however, top's flaws are what make him perfect to me. he's a well-crafted character who is fun to watch. plus, if you make a list of all his "sins" and "faults," he doesn't compare even slightly to these other characters. besides mew (uh, at least before ep6 lol), he's literally the least messy of them all - he's just a mean girl, who slept with someone else because the objectively worst of them tricked him through some of the nastiest, most underhanded means i have ever seen. all his other negatives aren't even unique to him - in fact, he seems to be the only one of the boys (besides mew) who doesn't do anything nasty unprovoked. we've seen in literally every episode what he said here is true:

and even when ray "messed with" top by telling him he wanted to give whoever punched him in the face a trophy (because *checks notes* top was irritated that ray raised his voice about mew not wanting to leave the party. and that he's dating mew... that's it lmao ray was rude just from top hitting on mew. he didn't even know him yet! what kind of "if i can't have him no one can" kinda bullshit is that? wtf ray, grow up! ), top just stared at him sadly - and that was when he still thought that ray was sleeping with mew.

every (idk, i might be missing a couple) other "flaw" of top's could be used to describe other characters in the group:

"smug" because he's hot and rich (ray)

"smug" because he's "good at sex" (boston)

promiscuous (boston)

drug user (ray)

lying/not telling mew about sleeping with boston (boston and nick)

"betrayed" mew by sleeping with someone else (boston)

not mentioning that someone kissed him without consent (mew)

punches someone in the face (sand, ray, boston, and mew lol)

he "stole" (tbh i'm not convinced) someone's lover (boston)

and guess what? he's stopped doing all of those things. (i'll concede this: he might get in another fight later. i hope not, i'm a little over all the punching soz mew can have his attempted drowning of boston tho, i won't complain about that.) (and he's definitely going to relapse and take mew's pills, probably in the next episode. but at least he's stopped before then - i haven't seen any evidence that ray has ever tried to get sober.) can't say the same for the other characters.

meanwhile, negative things he hasn't done that others have:

violated consent (boston and ray)

instigated a physical fight (sand and ray)

insisted that the person he was seeing was "just a friend" (ray and boston)

recorded someone without their consent (nick and boston)

made fun of mew for being a virgin (boston)

smashed his own phone into pieces so he could steal a sex tape (sand omg i really cannot get over how truly insane that was)

hit the person he's sleeping with (boston and ray)

drove while drunk/high (ray)

got high and sent his best friend a sex tape of his boyfriend with their other friend ON HIS BIRTHDAY, AT THE BIRTHDAY PARTY WHERE BOTH OF THEM WERE (ray lol also can't get over that one. and everyone saying he did it with "good intentions" like nah just because he knew that mew wouldn't fall in love with him over it, doesn't mean that he didn't do it out of revenge against boston and top - even if he thought he was avenging mew. ON HIS BIRTHDAY, BITCH. maybe he convinced himself he was doing the right thing, but he did it because he was angry and high.)

exposed his friend's darkest secrets about their love lives to their partners, only to hurt them because he's miserable (boston and ray)

and i don't think top would. (maybe the driving while drunk/high but based on the kind of drugs he likes, i don't think he'd be able to, like, stand let alone get in a car lol but we'll see.)

and by compiling this list, i don't mean to say that all these characters are evil, except boston, and by his own admission lol,

or that they're bad characters, just that the hate top gets is ridiculous and disproportionate. i'm not even saying that you have to like him, just don't exaggerate his faults or blame him for all the shit boston did to him. oh, you hate him based on "vibes?" don't act like it's not because he's played by force and you don't care about forcebook. it's not subtle😒 we can see your clown shoes😒

and this isn't really directed at you, anon, i know you mean well, but i am really tired of the fact that top fans seem to be the only ones who feel the need to say stuff like "he's flawed" and "he has issues," when every single fucking character is and does. why do we have to be defensive? we don't. he's a good character, and not even a bad person lol

i fucking love him, no caveats. i love everything about him.

AND ANOTHER THING lol i should just shut up but this is really bothering me: i am SO annoyed by these "huh i guess top does love mew" and "huh i wonder if top has some sexual trauma" posts LIKE REALLY??? REALLY???????? NOW YOU THINK SO?? Alright, I know I'm late but it’s the time of the year again where I post my favorite BLs of the year even though no one cares about my opinion lmao. Buckle up cause this is gonna be long...

Top Thai BLs

I Feel You Linger In The Air

What a breath of fresh air this was! Not only was the romance top-notch, I was also really invested in the plot and what was happening to other characters. The wlw sideplot felt natural and not shoehorned in and was what we all deserved. I'm just so happy to have experienced this masterpiece!!

Only Friends

Came for SandRay, stayed for BostonNick (and SandRay). Though it had its ups and downs I can't help but love it. There was so much messy drama that I was LIVING for every single week and experiencing that along with the rest of BL tumblr was the best thing. We desperately need more shows like this in the BL world.

Laws of Attraction

Ridiculous SFX could not deter me from loving this show. It's dramatic, it's over the top and it's ridiculous at times but it's crime so of course I liked it. Bonus points for cutting from the villain being killed in prison straight to the main couple's wedding. We love to see it!

Top Korean BLs

Our Dating Sim

This was my last watch of the year when I was looking for something that I could squeeze in without many expectations. How could I have guessed that it would turn out to be my favorite Korean BL of the year? Though the story is nothing new or groundbreaking, I enjoyed the main actors chemistry so so much. Korean BLs, to me, often feel a little stiff but they managed to make it feel so real and easy, I loved it.

The Eighth Sense

Oh, this was something else... High quality cinematography and high-quality story-telling. In the end I went into it with expectations that were too high to meet but still, such a touching BL that will definitely move you (maybe even to tears).

Why R U? (KR)

A show held together by three pieces of duct tape but enjoyable nonetheless. I don't think it's comparable to its Thai original. Yes, the plot is more or less the same but you gotta see it as its own thing. I do love me a panicked gay/confident gay pairing so it already had me from there. And let's talk about the kisses cause !!!

Top Japanese BLs

Tokyo in April is…

They just have that je ne sais quoi, that special 'make me fall to the floor and bite my fist' quality to them. BZY and FZR also had their insane moments and in combination with everything that ChenAi were doing this show just hit the right spot. Can't wait to rewatch it.

Was it ridiculous? Yes. Was it cute tho? Also yes. Nothing I would rewatch but it did make me laugh a lot so there's that.

It’s not like we have much of a selection regarding Chinese BLs (cries in when will Eternal Faith, Immortaily and Winner is King be released from the dungeons?) but HOLY SHIT did they deliver with this one. I'm not a fan of cheating stories at all but DEAR GOD these two!!! It's the YinWar magic that pulled me in and will never let me go. The constant back and forth did get a bit annoying at some point but I won't complain when we also got things like the shower scene...

Roommates of Poongduck 304 (2022)

Can ZB1 disband faster so Jiwoong can return to BL acting please? I jest, I jest... kinda. I loved the relationship dynamic in this one so much because they both held power over the other (and both were petty bitches about it lmao).

My Gear and Your Gown (2020)

The girls that get it get it, the girls that don't don't :) Falling for MarcPawin during Dangerous Romance and THEN realising that they're the mains for this show immediately put it on top of my watchlist and I'm not ashamed to say I liked it. It's very 2020 but sometimes that's all you need.

What a hodgepodge of genres... One second you're chasing a murderer, the next you're having sex fantasies about your coworker and then you're having visions about your past life with your soulmate (who is also said coworker). Love it!

Most disappointing BLs

Be Mine Superstar

I was so excited for a new JaFirst series as I really enjoyed Don't Say No, and Remember Me didn't quite quench my thirst. But this... if this was a BL then why did we spend SO MUCH TIME on the beef between the agents?? Shit was annoying af. Moreover, I really could not deal with Ja's character. I know a lot of people liked his innocent puppy-like behaviour but it was just too much for me. The only redeemable thing was the side pairing but even that turned into a hot mess quite quickly. Had to drop this at some point after I started watching it on 1.5 speed and realized that I'm torturing myself.

Low Frequency

Exciting concept but stiff acting and a plot that dragged on. Dropped halfway through.

Bon Appetit

It's not bad but just straight up boring. I finished it but it didn't leave any lasting impressions. I know you can do better, Korea...

Next up in the end of the year posts and it's new surprising bl ships. For this post it only includes ships who are (semi) permanent. Two actors who worked together once and won't do so again aren't a ship to me.

I just wow. Billy already had good chemisty with his previous partner but this is a hit as well. Saint really knows who to cast. Not to mention Babe is damm good actor for a first timer. Glad he got rejected by Starhunter. They would have waisted him. Chemistry is off the charts here.

So Bosston and Jo from Be Mine Superstar. I know their storyline was mainly NC scenes. But damm they were good tho. And they definitely showed of their chemistry. I am glad the novel of their characters is getting turned into a series. Let's just hope we mainly get good storytelling.

Look yes I already knew them long before they starred in a BL and long before there were even plans of doing so. But hey off screen chemistry and on screen chemistry are two different things. Plus Daou was also a first time actor. But damm they nailed it! And that iconic earth quake scene? People who watched Love In Translation will forever remember that.

Now My School President wasn't the first thing I saw them in. It was Moonlight Chicken. I also wasn't planning on watching My School President because I was like "Most of the actors are to young for me". But then I saw Gemini and Fourth in Moonlight Chicken and I fell in love. Such cuties. So I watched My School President and it was one the best BL's I have seen.

Last one and it's NeoMark! To bad we didn't get them together in Cooking Crush as well. But let's hope we get them in part 2 of GMMTV's announcement show. I would totally like to see more of them.

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?

Love In The Air!

I remember watching the pilot trailer when it aired but truthfully I forgot about this show until everyone started talking about it again 😅 Anyways... I fell in love so fast it’s not even funny. My mental health has been meh at best the past few months and I needed a show like LITA to just watch without having to really think :) Also the cast? Like?! In love with all four of them (especially Noeul).

The Eclipse!

I watched ep 1 when it first came out but never continued the show because I wasn’t feeling it (little did I know 🤡). Everyone was hyping this show up so I made myself sit down and watch it... ended up binging all 6 (aired) episodes and safe to say I was hooked... I mean if anyone on here saw my blog you were probably fed up of me talking about this show (very sorry). So yeah... It’s now one of my favourite BLs. We won’t talk about the cast because I will never stop, lets just say I am now a Neo and khaotung fanpage!

This technically doesn’t count but I finally watched Bad Buddy this year and I’m mad at myself for waiting so long.

What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?

Cutie Pie- I didn’t dislike it but I found myself getting bored and skipping a lot, especially towards the end... shout out to Perth in that black shirt tho😏 Also loved the side couples

Even Sun- Listen I will do anything for BounPrem but lord I was struggling with this one. Why was the intro so long?! also who wrote the script because ooft. Skipped everything apart from the BounPrem scenes.

What has been your favourite BL this year?

KinnPorsche- Lets all act surprised! This show was my entire personality all summer and the reason I came back to tumblr lol. Met so many lovely and amazing people because of this show and it will always have a special place in my heart. It also gave us the masterpiece that is Why Don’t You Stay aka my most played song of 2022. Again the cast is everything to me!

Semantic Error- No explanation needed for this one really. I swear Seoham has been in the military for years! Why is it going so slowly?!

Between Us- Are we only 4 episodes in? Yes. Do I care? NOPE! After waiting almost 3 years they could just stand in that locker room arguing for 12 episodes and I would still watch every second! As much as i tried not to, I did and still do have high expectations for this show BUT so far everything is perfect- I don’t really care about Team’s friends as characters or the relationship between Bee and Prince? but I also don’t hate it.

Favourite BL couples (not just of 2022)?

Do you remember what Matarai said to Aki when Akihito went to editor-in-chief after returning from Hong Kong? They said it's uncomfortable to do this with your parents' connections. Did other photographers think Aki was a parent connection? Please understand that I am awkward because I am not good at English. 😅

Yes you are correct! I’ll pull up exactly what mitarai said

This is a little detail iv noticed a few times within the story where someone mentions aki’s “connections” or alludes to the fact he is a “nepo baby” (ie someone whose parents are either rich or helping them in same way with their career)

Tho this is the only time I can think of where we see it directly being mentioned in the main storyline, it strangely is mentioned more then once in a few extras. Sometimes as a continued gag.

The extra’s where aki plays the boss of a company that asami, fei and mikhail work at is one such time where it’s brought up - In this context it is used as a joke because how else would aki be the superior next to people like Asami, Fei and Mikhail- who are all big boss men in their own right.

Though this is just an extra and obviously Aki is not a real life boss, considering the other times it’s been mentioned it might be something that is actually somewhat accurate to reality.

Another time it’s mentioned is in the extra and crossover chapter “Kou Suru Finder No Hyouteki” where akihito acts as a chaperone on a school trip to Kyoto alongside sensei’s other characters from her one shot series “Kou wo Suru DNA”

Again here he mentions he “pulled some strings” to get this job. Alluding again that he might be some sort of nepo baby??

Obviously in the first panel Mitarai is bringing it up to be a meanie and suggest aki is not a pro like he is. I am guessing he is doing that because freelance work is not easy and competitive - there is definitely a little bitterness there for Mitarai. But he is probably like that with everyone who might be competing with him for a scoop. So I don’t think it’s personal 😅

Iv seen other anime where nepotism is sometimes used as troupe or as a plot device. Used in a demeaning way to make others feel like they don’t have accomplishments of their own and got everything due to nepotism - a favorite BL of mine “Sekaiichi Hatsukoi” also uses this troupe a lot. So I think in general it something that is sometimes brought up in Japanese work force. even if it’s not necessarily true. If your parents are in the industry people will think you only succeed in that same industry because of ur families connections.

Though we don’t know much about Akihito’s family, Sensei herself has at least confirmed that Akihito’s father is a photographer as well. And aki grew up and wanted to be a photographer because he watched his dad. Given how many times it’s been brought up - I am sorta under the impression that Akihito’s father might even be a famous big shot in the photography industry. Which is maybe why Mitarai is bringing it up because he knows who his dad is.

This is just my own guess, but I think it explains why Akihito is so determined about his own career. We know as the audience that he is a good noodle and would never use whatever connections he has to get a job. If he refuses any support from Asami I think it’s safe to say he probably refuses any support from his dad either. We know he is only just scrapping by, and is frugal and responsible. His stubborn attitude and his determination when it comes to his job most likely comes from a place of not wanting to be accused of nepotism.

Yet he is still accused of it anyway despite basically starting from the lowest position and doing what he can to work his way up. And doing it all in a way that he feels is honest - unlike Mitarai who is sneaky and backhanded. Aki is not willing to give up his morales for a scoop.
