🍌Maduros🍌(Based on these au headcanons by @livvychoclate! Luz is an 8 year old in this.)
"Wow, that was the bestest most funnest night EVER!" Little Luz exclaimed with excitement as she ran inside the house with her plastic pumpkin bucket filled with Halloween candy after Beardo Philip unlocked and opened the front door.
"I got SO MUCH candy! 🎃 🍬"
Stepping inside, the bearded man smiled at his hyperactive step-daughter as he closed and locked the door behind him.
"I'm glad you had fun," he told her.
Philip was asked by Camila to take Luz trick-or-treating after explaining the tradition to him, since she had to go to work today.
Racing towards the dining room table, Luz plopped herself down on a chair.
After removing her medieval helmet from her head, she placed it down on the surface before unloading all her candy from her bucket.
Luz had planned on being a good witch princess this year, but accidentally spilled maple syrup all over her pretty dress.
Philip attempted to handwash it, but the stain remained.
He was concerned about ruining the material by throwing it in the washer, so he took Luz to the costume store.
During his search for a new princess costume for Luz, he saw her wearing a helmet and joyfully exclaiming about being a crab maiden.
The helmet seemed to be a favorite of hers and he found her adorable in it, so using Camila's credit card, he purchased it for her.
Luz began to examine her treats with a twinkle in her eye while Philip went over to the sink to wash his hands before drying them.
His plan was to prepare some maduros for her as a pre-dinner snack since she loved them.
The recipe was taught to him by Camila.
"Luz, that's a great deal of candy. Make certain to brush your teeth tonight," Philip said, cutting a sweet, ripe, peeled plantain into smaller pieces on a cutting board.
Luz nodded to her step dad with a smile, popping a pink piece of unwrapped taffy into her mouth. "I will, I promise!"
Philip gave her a smile then turned to the large skillet on the stove and carefully placed the plantain slices into the bubbling oil.
"Ooo, can you add some chia jelly to the maduros after they're done, Dad?"
"Of course, dear."
During his childhood, his sugar cravings were almost as strong as hers.
He chuckled at the memories.

Drop Them Bones Chapter 4 notes
land ho! (nautical) Shouted by the ship's watch to inform the crew that land has been spotted. Synonyms: land ahoy
First of all, I was so surprised and excited when GHOST _WARD, now cower-inside made fanart for the last scene of Chapter 4! So much love for them!
Science note, Nami is referring to island formation via volcano in her discussion of the island chain.
Recipes harmed in the making of this chapter:
Kedgeree - If you like eggs, curries, rice, and fish, this recipe is all things good in the world.
Tomato Chutney - While I'm sensitive to nightshade, tomatoes don't immediately disrupt all my bodily functions like peppers, so this recipe gets employed and adapted in our house when anything calls for chutney, salsa, etc. I don't recommend using canned tomatoes for it, but I trust that Sanji can make anything edible.
Conch fritters - We're not huge fans of frying noms, but I couldn't resist this one. You'll find that often any cooked snails are basically beaten/drowned/diced until they're unrecognizable as snails, then served. Like, I've had escargot in Paris and all I can say of the experience is "garlic! butter! chewy!" and that I loved the bread that came with it.
Pan fried plantains - Plantains are one of those staples that just make everything better and so many cultures have different ways of preparing them. I prefer ripe plantains to greener (think maduros vs tostones), and I love sweet plantains with sticky rice and caramel sauce for dessert.
Soundtrack!

Yom Kippur break fast has ballooned into a significant event in the American Jewish calendar over the past couple of decades. Hype has escalated, guests have increased, and menus have become more extravagant. But at the heart of this tradition is classic Ashkenazi fare: bagels, smoked fish, blintzes, and cake.
It’s the same sort of thing I grew up eating in the U.K., where my family’s Polish and Lithuanian roots dictated that we must bring in and break our fasts on fish. One of my most horrifying childhood memories is returning home from synagogue on Yom Kippur afternoon for a nap to find a huge glass jar on the porch housing whole, pickled herrings — heads and all — delivered by my grandmother for that evening.
We’ve added our own twist on break fast fare, influenced by our surroundings — cups of tea with milk alongside our cake, and marmite on our bagels. Correspondingly, a Costa Rican friend serves gallopinto (rice and beans) and platanos maduros (fried plantains) alongside her lox; another friend with roots in Baghdad’s Jewish community subs zimsterne for kakas (ring-shaped caraway cookies) and babas (stuffed date cookies).
Outside the Ashkenazi community, however, there are many very different, centuries-old break fast traditions that are tempting enough to ditch the bagels for. Read on to learn more about Yom Kippur break fast traditions from around the globe.
Iraq
Iraqi Jews know that you can’t beat a drink and bite of something sweet post-fast, turning to crumbly, date-filled cookies and hariri — a homemade sweetened almond milk that’s often flavored with cardamom. Once that’s settled in the stomach, many embark on a full-on meat meal, like t’beet — a stuffed chicken and rice dish flavored with a mix of warm spices that’s prepared pre-fast and cooked low and slow until Yom Kippur is over.
Morocco
Instead of coffee, Moroccan Jews opt for mint tea accompanied by marzipan cookies or fijuelas, fried pastries dipped in sweet syrup, before diving into a break fast feast. Many prepare a hearty tomato-based soup called harira, featuring chickpeas and/or lentils, lemon, cilantro, and often chicken or beef. Others turn to traditional Shabbat dishes like dafina (or skhina), Morocco’s cholent equivalent, flavored with saffron and stuffed with all kinds of delights – marrow bones, chickpeas, eggs, meatloaf, rice, the list goes on!
Iran
Iranian Jews keep it simple with black tea, drunk alongside a soft-boiled egg and faloudeh seeb – a refreshing apple-rosewater treat that’s somewhere between a drink and a dessert. Learn more about Persian Yom Kippur traditions here.
Greece
Similar to Iraqi hariri, Greek Jews break their fast on a traditional homemade beverage called pepitada. Made from toasted melon seeds that are blended with water, sweetened with honey or vanilla, and flavored with rosewater or almond extract, this unique concoction is an excellent thirst-quencher. A version of avgolemono chicken soup called sopa de huevos y limon is a Yom Kippur staple, eaten either before or after the fast.
Syria
Syrian Jews, too, opt for the “more is more” approach. Stone fruits feature heavily: refreshing apricot water serves to rehydrate the weary; dried apricots and plums are mixed with rice and ground beef and then stuffed inside zucchinis; sour cherries paired with tamarind make a sweet-sour sauce for meatballs. Others choose to ditch the meat in favor of sambusek, triangular turnovers stuffed with cheese, spinach, or chickpeas.

...
It's that the good is definitely repeated, and if it has a Venezuelan flavor, even more so. Here in unbeatable company enjoying some tequeños for starters, tequeños are sticks of white, hard or semi-hard cheese, which despite the heat are not very melting, wrapped in wheat flour dough, and fried in oil. Then taking a bite of the cachapas, yellow and sweet corn tortilla, made on a budare or griddle: shredded chicken, mixed, combining shredded meat and "Reina pepiada" (combination of shredded chicken, avocado, garlic and mayonnaise), and a coarse cachapa called "Caripe mixed cachapa", stuffed with mano cheese, slices of ripe plantain, shredded meat, fresh avocado and grilled plain cheese; with our respective juices, passion fruit for the Caribbean friend, the traditional papelón with lemon for the Catalan friend and soursop for this Venezuelan heartthrob. The dessert couldn't be missing, a shared portion of a delicious quesillo, and a couple of Zulia beers to conclude the dinner. Confident that this group will meet again soon!
