Why are there no more TV commercials for toddlers with disabilities?

The Shift in Representation: Why We See Fewer TV Commercials Featuring Toddlers with Disabilities
The landscape of television advertising, particularly for products aimed at children, has undergone significant changes over the past few decades. While commercials featuring toddlers with disabilities were once more prevalent, their presence has become less frequent. This shift reflects a broader societal evolution in representation and inclusivity. Let's explore some possible reasons behind this decline:
1. Moving Beyond Inspiration:
Shifting Focus: Early commercials featuring children with disabilities often leaned heavily on the "inspirational" narrative. The focus was on overcoming challenges, with the product playing a secondary role in aiding this triumph. This approach, while well-intentioned, could be seen as patronizing and fail to resonate with viewers who desired a more nuanced portrayal.
Authentic Representation: There's a growing emphasis on authentic representation in advertising. Audiences expect to see children with disabilities simply being children – playing, laughing, and enjoying their lives – instead of solely defined by their disability.
2. Targeting the "Real" Decision-Makers:
Parental Influence: Decisions about children's products are often made by parents or caregivers. Advertisers are increasingly targeting this demographic directly. Instead of focusing solely on the child's experience, commercials might highlight how the product benefits both the child and the caregiver, offering solutions to real-life challenges parents face.
Focus on Product Functionality: Modern commercials tend to take a more product-centric approach. The emphasis is on showcasing the features and benefits of the product in a clear and engaging way. This allows parents to assess how the product can specifically address their child's needs, regardless of ability.
3. The Rise of Social Media and Targeted Advertising:
Micro-Targeting: The rise of social media and targeted advertising allows companies to tailor messages to specific demographics. Instead of relying on mass-market television commercials, companies can reach niche audiences (including parents of children with disabilities) through online platforms and create more relevant, targeted messaging.
There are a few reasons why you might not see as many TV commercials featuring toddlers with disabilities:
Shifting Advertising Strategies: Advertising has moved heavily online, with targeted social media campaigns often replacing traditional TV commercials.
Focus on Authenticity: Modern marketing might favor featuring real families in their everyday moments, potentially showcasing disability in a more natural way.
Evolving Representation: The emphasis might have shifted towards inclusive casting across various media, where disability becomes a part of the character rather than the sole focus of the advertisement.

Influencer Marketing: Influencer marketing, where trusted individuals promote products online, has gained traction. Parents of children with disabilities might be sought out to showcase how a product works within their everyday lives, offering a more relatable and authentic perspective.
The Future of Representation:
Moving Towards Inclusion: The decline of commercials featuring toddlers with disabilities purely for "inspirational" purposes doesn't translate to a lack of inclusion. Instead, it signifies a shift towards more genuine and diverse portrayals.
Inclusion as the Norm: The goal is for inclusivity to become the norm, where children with disabilities are naturally represented in advertising alongside their peers without disabilities. This reflects the reality of classrooms, playgrounds, and families everywhere.
Ultimately, the advertising landscape continues to evolve. While television commercials featuring toddlers with disabilities might be less frequent, the broader conversation about representation and inclusivity remains ongoing. The goal is to create a world where all children see themselves reflected in the media they consume, celebrating individuality and the value of every member of society.

I chose to let it go, you should too.
Let's be serious for a moment. You think you can go your whole life holding resentment and it's not going to ruin you and rot you from the inside out? That's not how this life thing works beautiful people, no not at all. The more you hold on to it, the colder and harder you get. We start off as such innocent beings, such softness in our core, just to let our resentment and anger and lack of forgiveness turn us into someone harder, less compassionate, and even more defensive. Then we wonder why we attract the same type of people into our lives. WHAT YOU PUT OUT YOU WILL RECEIVE. Now I know, trust me God I know, hurt people hurt people and that's probably how some of us were hurt. When I had to forgive others (it was literally life or death) and I was figuring out how to go about it, I prayed and prayed for God to give me the ability to be able to let these resentments go so they wouldn't end up killing me. It was hard, I had been abused and humiliated and hurt by those closest to me at the time. But I wanted to come out to the other side, I wanted to get better. The second I showed up for myself and asked God for help and really made the decision to forgive, that's when I started feeling lighter. I felt like okay, I'm not in this alone, my chest doesn't feel like it's about to cave in anymore. I had let go of the poison I was drinking everyday, expecting it to hurt the person I was resentful at when in reality I was just destroying myself like a form of subconscious emotional torture. I wasn't alone anymore because I had God on my side but truly, falling back on his word and prayer. Seeking him was my first step to a world of forgiveness. Let's be real, he forgave me for all the terrible things I had contributed to the world at one point, so who was I to not forgive. Just another perspective, a more common one maybe.

Be Curious, Have an Open Mind
How to Navigate Disagreements
The difference between good conflict and bad conflict is never talked about enough. There can be forms of good conflict that allow for us to grow and for our minds to expand. Spending our lives having people agree with us constantly is stagnant. Our opinions have the ability to change and we should challenge them to as often as we can.
Who are we as people if we can believe in something so strongly and not be able to see its flaws? Or be able to understand someone else who feels this way about a different issue?
Be curious. Don't make assumptions on something based off of what you believe. If you believe in something so strongly you should be able to have a conversation about it where it's called into question.

Uganda Passes Anti-Gay Bill: A Perspective from Africa
It's a jungle out there if you get your information from the mainstream media, let's call them professional perception manipulators and they are relentless in pursuit of their mission to keep us misinformed. What a joke. The world is in the fast lane to the insane asylum, and that's insulting to the asylum. I wonder if I am the only one noticing what is happening in the world today
When I view this situation and apply some critical thinking that has since been long abandoned by today's society, rather let me put it as it is. It seems the West and by that I mean countries influenced by the five eyes agenda, reported by the media they control - America, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada - call them what you will, the hypocrites, the bullies on this global sandpit.
Since, I made it a point to not engage with their propaganda, brainwashing machine to hear what the arguments on one side are, these days that's all you going to get. It is completely insane, it is clear manipulation, I am beginning to think that this is intentional to drive a specific agenda.
Let's balance this equation, hopefully, we don't get canceled… .
Recently, Uganda passed an anti-gay bill, and it has sparked a global conversation about human rights, democracy, and respect for individual freedoms. Some have criticized Uganda's decision, while others have supported it, arguing that it is a reflection of the will of the Ugandan people.
As an African, I believe that it is essential to understand the cultural, social, and economic factors that have shaped Uganda's decision. Uganda is a sovereign nation, and its people have spoken. It is not for outsiders to impose their values and beliefs on them. People need to understand that we all people believe what you believe.
Instead, we should engage in constructive dialogue that respects Uganda's sovereignty and allows for a diversity of opinions. We must recognize that democracy is not a one-size-fits-all solution and that different nations may have different approaches to governance and human rights.
Furthermore, it is important to consider the economic and geopolitical context in which Uganda's decision was made. Uganda has recently discovered significant deposits of gold, which could make it one of the richest countries on the continent. In this context, Uganda may be exploring its options for economic and political partnerships that align with its interests and values.
One potential option for Uganda could be to join the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), a group of emerging economies that are challenging the dominance of Western powers in the global arena. By joining the BRICS, Uganda could leverage its natural resources and strategic location to promote its economic and political interests and strengthen its sovereignty. It is time for the BRICS nations to improve trade amongst each other. My observation is that these countries have a lot in common, we might be old fashioned and in my opinion let us be stuck in our old school ways of thinking, we will be fine.
People do not fight over a mathematical equation, example, 2+2=4. I don't recall any nation going to war over this. But nations do go to war over their beliefs. And it is becoming clearer and clearer in my opinion that we have two very different belief systems at play. And hence there can never be any constructive humanity developing talks between these two belief systems. The old way of doing things works just fine for us and if a new technology comes along, we can use the new technology alongside the old one. Is that a crime
However, as South Africans, we have our own local issues to deal with, such as load shedding, the growing mistrust in state institution, the aftermath of the pandemic of which no one seems to want to talk about, while on the ground we are bury our loved ones after dying suddenly and how can we forget the economic instability. We must also recognize that our nation's history and context are different from Uganda's, and we should not impose our views on them. Instead we should applaud them for taking action in a democratic process where 387/389 were in favour of this bill.
Moreover, we must also acknowledge that the US, a nation that often lectures other countries about democracy, has its own issues with its election process and voting systems. Before criticizing other nations for their approach to democracy, the US must investigate its own democracy and address the flaws in its electoral process. Furthermore, we are moving away from using the dollar as the global reserve currency, BRICS is going back to real money, the current system is not working for us. The US can continue printing their money, we will watch from a distance stuck in our old ways.
In conclusion, Uganda's decision to pass an anti-gay bill has sparked a global conversation about democracy, human rights, and sovereignty. As Africans, we must engage in constructive dialogue that respects Uganda's sovereignty and recognizes the economic and geopolitical factors that have shaped its decision. We must also acknowledge that different nations may have different approaches to governance and human rights, and that we should respect people's opinions while promoting diversity and mutual understanding.

Anyone else ever feel like someone they're not?
I spend quite a bit of time with my thoughts and I feel like I can't even admit to myself my own truth sometimes.
I have nothing but myself to be all day long, and yet I still find myself not quite living up to my best self. My true self.

The Difficult Conversations
I simply didn’t realize how much hurt I kept to myself! Until I didn’t. The words seem to fall out of my mouth….when they do. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still guarded. Mother’s Day was one of those times when I couldn’t even keep my pain from myself let alone the object of my anger. Nope, not sharing who I was mad at because ultimately it doesn’t matter. What matters is that I was honest. Brutally…
