Smack about Empathy.
Smack is a mini-podcast in which I try to tackle topics with common sense and logical reasoning, without bad intentions or ulterior motives. If a take happens to align with any political, religious or other kind of ideology, that is purely coincidental. It will inevitably upset someone, but please hear me out and remain civil.

Ci sentiremo ancora. TRANSLATION Today we conclude a cycle that began on January 1 with a gift. Today, December 31, I want to conclude with another gift, conclude in the sense that the 3-minute podcast, as you may have noticed, is no longer daily, but I do it when I have something to say. So what gift do I want to give you today? It is the gift of the Moscow Rules, and you will wonder, what are these Moscow Rules? Surely you are familiar with them, because if you have ever watched a spy movie, or read a spy book, surely they talked about, or at least applied the Moscow Rules, which are the rules you have to follow to become a spy who does not get caught. There are ten of them, they have been codified, but it's not that they exist like that, in short they have been codified and I'll tell you about them and then make use of them as you wish, because then, applying the Moscow Rules, you can also feel like characters in a novel, adventurous spies even when you go to the supermarket to do your shopping. Then rule number one says never take anything for granted, and this seems to me to be a rule that can be safely applied in our lives as well. Then, never go against your instinct, when you feel a thing in your gut stomach, that says "mmm... this thing is a little..." That's it, follow your gut. Number three is that everyone is potentially controlled by your enemy. This means to tread lightly, to tread carefully, to never overextend yourself, to not tell things you should not tell. Another rule, do not look over your shoulder, because looking over your shoulder means thinking you are being followed. And this rule says don't look over your shoulder because you are never completely alone or lonely, there is always someone watching you. So the triumph of total paranoia that everybody is watching you, everybody is spying on you. Rule number, five go with the flow and blend in, be inconspicuous, and confuse everyone in the crowd. Rule number six, always vary the things you do and don't do the same things too often, so be a little unpredictable. Number seven, make your enemy think he can be comfortable, thus giving him a false sense of security. Number eight, don't pick on your enemy, because you must always respect him. Number nine, you choose the time, time, and place to act, and number ten always keep your options all open. I will add a caveat that these that I read to you are the Moscow rules in English, on Wikipedia, and there are four other languages; Chinese, Russian, French, and Lombard. I will leave you to think I don't know if there is anything to think about. We will be in touch again. LINK https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Moscow_rules

How did YOU #celebrate 🍦 #NationalIceCreamMonth 🍨? Still celebrating? You’ve got a few days left to indulge! Or you can just listen to my 1st #MiniPodcast #episode all about ice cream’s (barely known) origins in #America. It’s under 10 min long — a short, semi-sweet story that blends back in essential (18th-19th C.) black chefs & culinary pros who made American ice-cream the amazingness that it is today…CLICK (Or Copy & Paste into your browser) THE LINK HERE: https://thephiladelphiacitizen.org/foodizen-how-philly-invented-ice-cream-as-we-know-it/ TO LISTEN & ENJOY🍦! Then StayTuned for a fresh new episode focused on a diff topic each month — now through Dec 2019!….Thank You for listening, commenting — and for SHARING! ….So did you even know #July’s National #IceCream Month? With several ice cream-centric days all throughout: ~ “#Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day” on July 1st ~ “🍑 #PeachIceCream Day” on July 17th ~ “#IceCreamSodaDay🥤 Day” — July 20th ~ Actual “#NationalIceCreamDAY” was Sunday July 21st… ~ And “#NationalVANILLAIceCreamDay” on July 23rd… [For whatever reason — #CHOCOLATEicecreamday’s segregated over into the month of June. Early June (7th). Well #chocolateicecream DOES come onto the scene way before vanilla ice-cream, historically speaking. So that might be alright. I supppose. 😉] * * * * I’m honored to be the newest contributor to #Foodizen, @TheCitizen’s dive into the nexus of #foodandculture in cities. I record monthly #audiopieces re: #Americanfoodhistory — starting in #Philadelphia, “#BirthplaceofourNation”, via a “#uniquelyAmerican” lens — that of my heritage, as a descendant of both free and enslaved people, particularly those who were black/#Negro/colored/#AfroAmerican/#AfricanAmerican along the #timeline — who played such critical (too often unacknowledged) roles in every aspect of America’s #food& #drink industries * * * * * * * * * * I’m delighted to be collaborating on this imprtnt proj w/ @onWURD: PA’s ONLY black owned & operated talk radio station. ..And the most special of shoutouts to the Talented Team + their wonderful work at #MarketRoadFims: an indep prod co bringing evocative storytelling to unusual, otherwise untold stories; founded by 2X Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright @lynnnottage + Emmy Award-winning film director @tgerber63 (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0e_7smBLW5/?igshid=46e5lxow67f0

TRANSLATION Every now and then images from my childhood come back to me, I think this happens to everyone. I often recall bits and pieces of TV series that I used to watch on black-and-white television, TV series that were broadcast in prime time, back in the day, when there were very few opportunities to watch anything on television, and my mom would let me stay up late watching them with her, especially when my dad was working the night shift. One of these scripts that came back to my mind today is La traccia verde [the green track], aired, I think IDK in the '70s, I was a child anyway, and I still remember it because, I remember this very, very beautiful black and white, it told the story of a scientist who was doing research on plants and he had found a way to make plants talk, more or less, he would connect electrodes to the leaves of the plants and depending on what was going on in the room, the plants would react, and in this way he had managed to locate a murderer who had killed somebody in the lab where there were the plants. Now, at the time this TV series, which I think was based on a short story but now I don't know I haven't checked, anyway it was presented as science fiction, because it talked about a crazy, distant, unbelievable future where humans would be able to communicate directly with plants. This morning in my inbox I found an article published by The Guardian where they tell exactly this, how in a laboratory somewhere, after many studies, it was determined how plants produce very, very loud sounds, comparable to the human voice, only we can't hear them because they have a very different frequency from what our ear perceives, they are ultrasound. These ultrasounds usually come once about every hour, however, when the plants are sick, because there is a lack of water, because there is too much sun, because there are problems with the fertilisers, they emit them much more frequently. Then it is hypothesised that these sounds made by the plants are used to communicate with each other, although no one is sure how or why. The thing that made me laugh, though, is that at the end of this article in The Guardian, I'll write the link in the notes, whoever writes it says: anyway, yes, it's true that plants make sounds, but also the pipes that carry water make sounds when water passes through them, but it's not necessarily that these sounds are used to communicate from pipe to pipe. It seemed like a thing, a fun way to end the article. Who knows, anyway, look after your plants and water them.
