I just want to feel alright

Eddie fidgets a lot. He always has.

Sometimes he feels like he'd go insane if he couldn't fidget or do something with his hands. It's like his hands are bored. He fiddles with and touches his hair a lot when his hands feel bored and needs something to do with them.

He wears rings and plays with them, sliding them on and off repeatedly during class or watching movies. So he knows it's not just when he's feeling bored, like in class, because he does it even when he's completely engaged with something. Even watching his favorite movies, he needs to be doing something with his hands.

Pulling at or playing with his hair or playing with his rings helps, but what really seems to grab his attention are his nails. He bites them and picks at them and the skin around them because it gives him something to do with his hands.

If he forgets his rings or he's wearing his hair up, his nails are always there for him to mess with. Even when he has other options, sometimes he chooses his nails because it's the easiest way to just be doing something with his hands.

And when Eddie bites his nails to the quick or messes with the skin too much until it aches or bleeds, he puts bandages around his cuticles, whichever one is drawing the most attention usually, to stop himself from picking at it more.

It's something he's always done, since he was a kid, and he isn't sure how to stop.

He shows up at Steve's house one day with band-aids on two of his fingers and answers honestly when Steve asks what happened.

He tells him that sometimes nothing feels like enough, that he can put his music on loud or play his guitar or watch a movie to distract himself from the feeling of not enough, but sometimes he has this thing where he just needs to pick at his nails. He bites his nails and picks at his skin and does too much sometimes, goes too far, and usually he can catch himself before he breaks skin, but sometimes he needs a barrier or he'll keep picking at it even when it hurts.

Steve looks at him thoughtfully and says that it's not the same thing, but he has this counting thing that he has to do and if he doesn't do it, it sometimes feels like everyone around him is going to get hurt, that when bad things started happening with the Upside Down, he thought it was his fault at first because he didn't finish counting his steps.

There's a weird relief in Eddie's chest then, hearing that he's not the only one with weird quirks or whatever.

And after Eddie leaves, he thinks that conversation is going to be it. He's glad he has friends he can share this shit with so he's not carrying it alone. He wants to learn more about Steve's thing, to help somehow, if only to know when not to interrupt him when he's in his head counting something. He thinks maybe if Steve sees him picking at his nails later, he'll remind him not to - that's the extent of what he thinks will happen.

But Steve sees him a few days later fixated on the already damaged skin on the side of his nail when they're watching a movie and he leans over and puts a hand over Eddie's to stop him from picking at it.

He's a little embarrassed, but he mutters, "Thanks," to him because he was going to keep going until it felt right, whatever that means - he usually starts bleeding before the feeling of right comes along.

He gets up and washes his hands in Steve's bathroom and comes back to ask if he can have a band-aid because he didn't see them in the first-aid kit under the sink and Steve already has one in his hand, like he brought the pack of bandages out when Eddie said he was coming over.

Something feels raw and aching in his chest and he's embarrassingly blinking back tears as Steve holds his hand still and wraps a band-aid around his finger. He's glad the lights are off, the only light coming from the TV, where Steve paused the movie when Eddie got up.

He's still fidgety when Steve moves back to lean on the arm of the couch and starts the movie back up, but he tries to keep his hands still.

He's not as successful as he wants to be because after a few minutes, Steve asks, "Can we try something?" looking over at him from the other side of the couch.

Eddie's nodding before he even registers the words, because he'd do anything Steve asked of him.

Steve slides closer and puts his head in Eddie's lap and Eddie doesn't breathe for a few seconds, unsure what's happening.

Steve tilts his head up to look at him and says, "If it'll help, you can play with my hair." He sounds nervous, like he's afraid Eddie's going to push him off his lap and tell him he's weird for asking.

But that's not what Eddie wants to do.

Eddie nods down at Steve and Steve looks relieved, lets out a deep breath, and turns to face the TV.

It takes a minute for Eddie to get his bearings about what's happening, but his hands catch up with his brain and he runs a hand through Steve's hair.

He keeps doing it.

He sweeps Steve's hair out of his face and keeps running his hands through it - at first, unable to take his eyes off Steve.

He turns back to the movie after a few minutes and finds that he can pay attention again, his hands buried in Steve's hair, scratching at his scalp, tucking the hair behind his ear, running his palm over it, smoothing it down. It's a repetitive motion that isn't hurting him and he doesn't have to think about it. He can just keep doing it and watching the movie and Steve isn't complaining, so he thinks it's okay.

Steve is-

Oh.

Steve is asleep when Eddie looks down next, the movie almost over. His eyes are closed and his breathing is even and deep, his arms curled into his chest, his chin resting on one of his fists.

He looks as peaceful and calm as Eddie feels.

Eddie reaches down and strokes his thumb along Steve's jaw, his mouth pulling up into a smile when Steve grumbles in his sleep.

He returns his hand to Steve's hair, gently stroking and smoothing it down in the repetitive motions that put Steve to sleep and he continues doing that until the movie ends.

His hands feel heavy as the screen goes dark after the credits. His hands keep moving idly, one cupping Steve's neck and the other stroking the strands of Steve's hair between his thumb and middle and index fingers.

He doesn't remember falling asleep, but it's late - too late to drive home - when he wakes up to Steve kissing the palm of his hand, murmuring to Eddie that they should go to bed so he doesn't get a crick in his neck.

He falls into Steve's bed next to him, and wrapped up in the smell of Steve, his hair between his fingertips again, he sleeps deeper than he can remember sleeping in a long time.

After that, Steve isn't shy about lacing hands with Eddie to get him to stop picking at his nails when they're with their friends, isn't shy about flopping over his lap and letting Eddie play with his hair while they watch a movie. That last one usually results in both of them sleeping through most of the movie, but it keeps Eddie from hurting his fingers, so it's a win in his book.

Eddie's got his own hair to play with, rings to fiddle with - eventually has fidget toys to play with when he gets diagnosed with ADHD - so he's not in need of a fidget toy in the form of Steve Harrington's hair.

But Steve asks him to play with it sometimes anyway.

Combinatorics of n-Dimensional Chess

So my current project of n-dimensional chess has involved perhaps, some of the most interesting combinatorics I've ever handled. Let's talk about them! It's a perfect showcase of what I think are the 3 most important parts of math 1.> Start with simple, easy examples 2.> Break large problems into smaller parts 3.> Shift your perspective and abstract problems in a way that they are easier to deal with, while retaining a way to shift back once you've solved it to reapply what you've done. So, let's first start with the problem. Here's a piece in 5D chess known as a unicorn. It can move along any triagonal, which means it has to pick 3 out of the 5 dimensions available. in 4D time travel chess, it actually gets to move in 6 dimensional space, but it was originally introduced in space chess, a 3D variant. My point here is that n-dimensional chess means that we have to be able to list these kinds of moves for a lot of different dimensionalities, and hard coding them quite simply isnt an option. So, we turn to combinatorics!

We'll start with point 1.> by starting with our easiest example. Let's take a look at a bishop's movement in 2D space first to get a good baseline. The directions a bishop can travel along in 2D space are as follows

Now I purposely arranged this in a way that if we replace negative numbers with 0, we get

And hey! That's just counting in binary! Which makes sense, because we only have two choices, positive and negative. Once we move up to 3D space, we can actually re-use this tactic as well. Let's list all the possible combinations of directions in 3D space first, without worrying about the sign. This is what I mean in part 2.> by breaking complex problems into smaller ones, in this case breaking the movement into directions and signs.

Basically, now we can take each one of these 3 possibilities and just apply our same trick by ignoring whichever part the 0 is in. And this works for triagonals and quadragonals in higher dimensional space as well. This makes iterating through signs the easier part Of course, that means the other half is going to be the hard part. Now, with diagonals it isn't too bad. Lets look at diagonals in 5D space. Get ready because this one is a bit more of a jump

Basically what I'm doing here is I'm starting with each 1 as far left as possible, and sliding them over repeatably. not the best explanation, but its doesn't matter because this method doesn't extend well to triagonals very well (choosing 3 directions at once). Instead, we take a shift of perspective, demonstrating point 3.> Instead of representing this as a series of 1's and zeros, we simply represent the *position* of each 1. For example

We have a 1 in the 0th and 3rd locations, so we can simply represent this as just (0, 3). Suddenly, instead of trying to figure out how many ways there are to arrange 1's and 0's, we are asking how many ways can we choose 2 numbers out of 0-4. Now, there is a slight catch in that (0, 3) and (3, 0) are the same thing, so when counting them order doesn't matter, making this a simple combination problem. However we don't just want to count them, we also want to iterate over them. Lets try to generate all possible triagaonals within 7D space. That means we want to choose 3 numbers ranging from 0-6. We start with our easiest one

In order to avoid repeats (no pun intended) we maintain a strict order that is always increasing. Each number should always be larger than the previous one. To iterate through new combinations, we simply increase the last number until we can't anymore.

Now at this point, we can't increase the last number any more, so we increase the second to last and start over

And since the number after 2 has to be larger than 2, the smallest number we can roll over to is 3. From here we continue. Basically, it turns this complicated problem into a type of counting game. Just like with regular numbers, we increase the last one until it can't go anymore, then we increase the next one over and restart, just instead of restarting to 0, we restart to the smallest allowed number that keeps things in order.

And at this point, we now have to increase our first number. I'll go ahead and finish this up despite it being pretty long, so that we can make sure we have all the possibilities

Now if we do some quick calculations for how many combinations we have of 3 numbers out of 7 total we get 3 choose 7 = 7! / ( 3! * (7-3)! ) = 7! / ( 3! * 4! ) = (7 * 6 * 5) / (3 * 2 * 1) = (7 * 5) = 35

Which is exactly how much we counted to! There are a few reasons we know there aren't any repeats but this has gotten long enough, and I can't quite articulate them off the top of my head. From here we convert back into 1's and 0's, then we count up in binary for each one of them to get the sign permutations. To wrap things up, I'll finish up by demonstrating all those sign permutations for one of these direction combinations. As stated in point 3.> we can translate back from our abstraction back to the original problem, so we can apply the smaller part that is generating the sign permutations.

There we go. A little bit of a mess, but that's it! And that's how I generate arbitrary m-agonals in arbitrary n-dimensional space for my chess engine. Finally, here's a picture of a queen's movement allowed to move along any agonal up to heptagonals (seven!) on a 7D board generated in a precursor to my current iteration of nDimensional chess

Y'know, not that anyone would ever play that lol. Here's a bishop on the same board, which is (somewhat) more... manageable lol.

And that's all I got! this math right here is the bread and butter of what makes n-dimensional chess possible! and is potentially one of my favorite problems I've worked on.

Something I'm often asked is "how do I tell someone about my trauma?" I wrote an article to answer the question.

The very first thing to keep in mind when you’re considering telling someone else about your trauma is that you are in control of who gets to know about your trauma. You can choose who to tell, how much to tell and have absolutely no obligation to tell anyone you do not want to tell.

1. Why do you want to tell someone?

It might be worth considering why you want to tell a particular person. Is it to feel closer to them? Is it because you could use some support? Are there triggers you want them to know about? Are you feeling a need to unburden yourself a bit? Knowing why you want to tell them can help you figure out what to say to them. For example, if you know that you want support, you can tell them about it and follow up with ideas of how they can support you. This is also a good opportunity for you to consider whether you actually do want to tell them, or if you’re planning it for a reason that you might regret, such as because you’ve been pressured into sharing your story because you’ve been told “you have to do it in order to heal.” It’s okay if you’re not ready to talk about it. Please, do not force yourself to talk about something you are not ready for.

2. Decide how you want to tell them

Now, if you have decided you still want to talk about your trauma to someone, and you feel like you understand why you want to do it, the next step is to decide how you want to tell them. Maybe it would be better in person. Maybe it would be better by phone. Or by text. Or in an email. Or even in an old school letter. These are all valid options, with advantages and disadvantages.

3. Plan and practice what you’re going to tell them

Whichever you choose, it’s likely a good idea to write down what you want to tell them, beforehand. It doesn’t have to be written in clear sentences, it could just be in bullet points. This will help you to organize your thoughts. This will also help if you get overwhelmed when you begin telling them, as it will give you a reference point to get you back on track. If you are reading from a statement that you wrote, you can let them know that this is the easiest way for you to share this information. If you are able to, you should practice telling them by saying it out loud if you will be telling them in person or on the phone.

4. Think about what you need from who you’re telling

Think about what you need from the person you’re telling when you’re sharing with them. It might be best to tell them what you would need before you get into talking about harder things. For example, if you begin struggling and having a hard time speaking, is it better to get words of encouragement from them or would you rather they sit quietly so you can think? When I was first telling one of my friends, I told him that it would be hard for me to talk about and that I needed him to just listen even if I went quiet and that I would tell him when I was ready for him to talk.

It’s okay to change your mind during the conversation too. If you tell them that you need them to just listen, it’s okay to change your mind and tell them “I could really use some validating words/encouraging words/a hug” right now. The bottom line is to communicate.

Think about what sort of support you want from whoever you’re telling, so you can talk to them about it. A lot of people tend to feel helpless when learning about someone’s trauma and being told how they can be supportive to you will help them and you. Part of your planning can be figuring out what to tell the person you’re talking to about how they can help you.

5. Set things up to help them go smoothly

Try to pick a time that will work well for both you and the person you’re telling. This means allowing for time to process things, time for them to ask questions, and so on. If you are seeing your friend for a 30 minute lunch break, this might not be the best time to talk about your trauma. It’s important you do not feel rushed. You might need to do something afterward to help your mental state or that of the person you’re telling, and if you have limited time, that may add to your stress. If possible, choose an environment that will make you more comfortable. A place where there are loud noises or other distractions may make it frustrating or extra stressful to talk about difficult things. If you are telling multiple people, such as a group of friends, consider whether you want to tell them one at a time, all at once, or perhaps a few at a time. Telling them one at a time may make it less overwhelming for you, or it may be easier for you to just have to explain things once, just to give two possible reasons for different approaches.

Overall tips

As you’re thinking about what to say, remember that you are in control of how much someone gets to know. You may decide to share things in a lot of detail, or in very little detail. Certain particular parts might be especially hard for you to talk about, and require you to get through quickly, with a minimum of detail. You don’t have to tell everything at one time. You might want to tell someone in stages. For example, the first stage might be “something happened to me, and I’m not ready to talk about the details yet, but I could use some support/extra love/whatever else you might be needing.”

One thing that might be good to bring up is whether there are any triggers you want people to be aware of. For example, you might want to avoid going to certain places or things like that. If you have flashbacks or other symptoms they might witness, it is good to talk about this, and help the person to understand what to do if/when a flashback happens. When I’m having a flashback, my partner helps me ground myself and he knows that I cannot handle being touched in those moments. Knowing your limits and what can help things be easier for you is good information for them to know. If what you need when something like that happens is space, be sure to let them know.

It’s okay to have limits on what you’re willing to share, and it’s okay if you cannot or simply do not want to answer some questions people may ask you. You should also let the person you’re telling know that if they feel uncomfortable with what they’re being told, at any time, they should let you know. It’s important that they be in the right mental state to handle whatever you’re about to tell them. If they need you to stop telling them about it, that’s okay. It might be overwhelming to them because of their own experiences or something else that isn’t even about you and what you went through. It might be that they need time to process what you’re telling them, especially if they had no idea it happened (making it a shock for them) or it involves someone else they know (meaning it might change how they view that person). Hopefully, they’ll be able to continue listening about it later.

At the end of the day, do what you need to in order to be as comfortable as possible. While telling someone can really help, make sure you are not just telling someone because you’ve been pressured by another person or even societal expectations. Rushing into it before you’re ready could make the experience more upsetting. Remember that it is up to you what you share and who you share it to. You can share as little as you want, even nothing at all, and no one is entitled to your story.

for no particular reason other then this popped into my brain of it own voltiton raider groups ranked by how hard they are to get into, starting with most difficult and ending with the easiest

1. Vipers, for the fact that they almost always sacrifice any wastelanders they can get a hold of. they dont really bother trying to convert anyone. its exceedingly rare for them to take in any single outsider. but there are at least a couple ways to do it. the obvious one being getting into their temple and taking the trial venom and most importantly surviving it. the other way is somehow more difficult then just getting envenomed and living to get indoctrinated to their religion, its marrying in which doesnt sound like it should be hard but considering you have to get into a relationship with a viper, who usually only meet wastelanders theyre about to kill in the night it gets way harder. not even going into meeting the same viper enough times to get them into a relationship with you. but yeah theyll let you marry in. neither option actually protects you from being fed to a snake later on though, which is why hardly anyone actually bothers.

2. Scorpions, in that Yvette has to actually have a position open for you and you have to be able to work in that position decently well. It could be anything from chem cook to enforcer but you have to be able to do it. Shes a good enough boss that she rarely has any open slots under her employ and being one of her smugglers isnt quite being in the gang.  Shes a decent boss if you manage to snag a job working for her though.

3. Jackals. It sort of varies with them, they could take anyone for any reason, from needing someone with your specific skillset to needing someone to sacrifice to the vipers. You may ask how this is easier then the scorpions, the answer is because of the many many groups of jackals independently wandering around theres at least one that needs your particular skillset. just watch out for them agreeing to take you in too easily because thats usually a sign of needing someone to sacrifice to the vipers.

4. The Great Khans. They let anyone try for the initiation if theyre willing to ask and dont require you to have any skill prior to joining them. Theyre willing to teach you any of the skills they need in their group and even have dedicated teachers to start you with who can teach you the history of the great khans and get you started on learning the skills for whichever job you want to do in the great khans. all in all pretty sweet deal, Papa is a great leader and you really only need to worry about the NCR pre vegas cause most raiders dont bother trying to pick fights with them if they can avoid it

yt-dlp: An Installation and Use Guide

This guide specifically walks through how to download and use yt-dlp on Windows, but if you have a Mac, you should still be able to follow along. Just make sure to download the Mac version of software whenever the option comes up. I'm also going to be assuming that you have a 64-bit Windows system. The standard today tends to be 64-bit for PCs, but if you're not sure and you want to double check then go to Settings -> System -> About -> Device Specifications -> System Type.

This guide also focuses on the command line version of yt-dlp (accessed on Windows by typing cd in the search bar). If you prefer to access the program through a GUI, you'll need to download additional software. Here's a link to help you get started. (LINK)

If you have any specific questions that you can't find an answer to within the linked resources, feel free to reach out and I'll do my best. Also, as someone who can be incredibly computer illiterate at times, I'm writing this guide in a way that explains a bunch of things I used to be confused about, so sorry if it goes over something in too much detail.

Installing:

Click on this link. It will take you directly to the section on the yt-dlp GitHub page where you can download the program.

Feel free to download whichever version works best for you, but I recommend scrolling down to RELEASE FILES and downloading the version that works for your system from the Recommended section. I've included a picture below.

Once you've clicked on your version (yt-dlp.exe for Windows users), yt-dlp will download automatically. It should show up in your Downloads folder.

FFmpeg:

To merge video and audio files (which helps you get the best quality from youtube possible), you also need to download FFmpeg.

Scroll down even more to the DEPENDENCIES section.

Click on that first link. It will take you to the FFmpeg webpage. Clicking on Download in the sidebar will take you to a page full of different versions of FFmpeg. DO NOT CLICK on the big green button in the middle of the page. What we need is a version that is already compiled.

Find the section that looks like this (titled Get packages & executable files):

If you're Mac, pick accordingly. If you're Windows or even Linux, I actually recommend you download from this webpage. It contains the same versions as the Windows builds by BtbN but is instead managed by the developers of yt-dlp.

Find the one titled "ffmpeg-master-latest-win64-gpl.zip" (I've included a highlighted picture below for reference).

That will download and go into your Downloads folder too.

Setting up a Folder:

The easiest way to use yt-dlp is by placing it and FFmpeg into a folder. You can store the folder wherever you want, but you will need to remember (and type out) the path to the folder every time you want to use yt-dlp, so I recommend not making it too deep.

What I did was make a folder titled "yt-dlp" within my Desktop folder.

Move the yt-dlp application from your downloads folder to your new yt-dlp folder.

IMPORTANT: Assuming you also placed the yt-dlp folder into your Desktop folder (and assuming you are a Windows user), then the full path to your new yt-dlp folder should be C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\Desktop\yt-dlp. Fill YOUR_USERNAME in with whatever your profile is called on your PC.

For the FFmpeg zip you downloaded, extract the zip file into your new yt-dlp folder by clicking the zip, clicking Extract all from the tool bar, and then entering the path to your yt-dlp folder. Everything within the zip is already stored into a folder, so you don't need to create a new folder just for FFmpeg.

Now you're ready to go!

Using:

This section is going to be almost exclusively Windows-focused because I've never used a Mac before and I don't know how the Mac command line varies from the Windows one. I'm also not going to go into any details. If you want more info or to explore the options, I recommend checking out the links in the Resources section.

Type cd and then press enter into the Windows search bar to bring up the command line. If you've never used the command line before, this is what it looks like:

Type the following into the command line:

cd Desktop cd yt-dlp

This will take you to the same place where your yt-dlp application is stored. You must cd into the appropriate folders every time you want to use yt-dlp.

YouTube, Twitch, and Most Websites:

Find a link to whatever YouTube or Twitch video that you want.

Into the command line, type yt-dlp followed by the link you want to use. This is what it should look like (the red is what you type):

C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\Desktop\yt-dlp> yt-dlp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hECaXfk2Wo4

Press enter and viola! Your video should download! It will automatically go into your yt-dlp folder.

Twitter:

Twitter forces you to log into an account to view a video, so you have to give yt-dlp your account information if you want to download anything. I understand being wary of doing this.

The easiest way of going about this is by typing:

yt-dlp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hECaXfk2Wo4 -u YOUR_TWITTER_USERNAME -p YOUR_TWITTER_PASSWORD

And then your video should download as normal.

Alternatively, you can use your browser cookies as explained here.

Updating:

Here is the section on the GitHub that explains updating. Basically, type yt-dlp as if you want to download a video, but instead of also adding the link, add -U at the end.

Uploading:

If you want to upload a video or clip to tumblr and it's not working, my number one advice is to rename the video file to something simple and add .mp4 at the end. If that doesn't work, try converting it (either with yt-dlp itself or an online website). Sometimes you just have to fiddle with things before they work the way you want. Good luck!

Togawa is not a morning person. One of his favorite things about living on his own as an adult was the freedom to sleep to the very last possible minute every morning without judgment.

However.

Since he started sleeping at Nozue’s, he has discovered there is one compelling reason to get up earlier than necessary: watching Nozue get dressed.

Fortunately, Nozue is actually a morning person, so Togawa is able to watch while sitting at the kitchen table, only half awake, over a cup of coffee Nozue has learned to provide with an indulgent smile and no attempt at coherent conversation.

His favorite part is the when Nozue puts on the vest for one of his three-piece suits and then opens the drawer to select his tie. Togawa keeps his own minimal collection of ties haphazardly on a hanger on the back of the wardrobe door, and he tends to grab whichever one is easiest to extract that doesn’t actively clash with his suit. Nozue says he just doesn’t care about fashion; Togawa insists he has streamlined his options for efficiency.

Nozue cares about fashion, though. He has a collection of carefully selected ties that he keeps neatly rolled up in one of the top drawers of his dresser, arranged by color, very pleasing to look at, and he takes his time to pick just the right one every morning.

Togawa is sitting at the table happily observing the process through the steam rising from his coffee cup when Nozue looks up and smiles.

“Do you want to choose?”

Togawa shakes his head and smiles back. “That’s not the point.”

“No?” Nozue says, turning back to the drawer and holding up a tie to the mirror in consideration. “What is the point?”

“Watching you pick.”

Nozue’s eyes meet Togawa’s in the mirror, clearly curious. “Why is that fun?”

“I like seeing you be happy.”

Nozue visibly represses a smile and concentrates extra hard on getting the knot in his tie even. Togawa thinks it might be an extra complicated one today, but he can’t tell from across the room. He’ll have to remember to look more closely later.

He means to do it once he’s also dressed, but Nozue catches his hand before he can reach for his own (boring) tie and pulls him over to the dresser, distracting him from his purpose.

“Let me pick one for you,” he says, straightening Togawa’s collar with a soft smile.

Oh no. This is not what Togawa meant. He knows what Nozue’s ties cost. “I’ll spill something on it!” he says in mild panic.

“I have a good dry cleaner.”

“What’s wrong with my ties?” he tries defensively. It’s a last-ditch effort; he knows he’s going to lose.

Nozue is already studying the drawer, but slants him a judgmental look out of the corner of his eye. “Everything. I’m going to replace them one day.”

Togawa sighs.

Nozue turns to him, holding out a beautifully subtle navy blue and silver tie with the pattern almost entirely contained in the weave. “You said you liked seeing me be happy.”

“I do,” Togawa confirms helplessly.

Nozue flips up his collar and positions the tie with a sensual kind of care. “This makes me happy,” he says, eyes on his hands as he works the knot with the same swift confidence he would use on himself.

Togawa truly released a menace when he finally got Nozue to acknowledge his own feelings, and he suffers for it daily.

“There,” Nozue says, turning so they’re both reflected side-by-side in the mirror. “Perfect.”

Togawa kisses him in agreement, one hand on Nozue’s cheek to draw him in more deeply, careful not to muss their outfits.

Harnessing the power of the mfing sun to fuel a giant robot is sick as FUCK tho so I wouldn't put it past Oda. Definitely something a space age civilization could do. Tho mother flame is implied to be powered by a fusion power reactor, so if Vegapunk still couldn't get the robot working after all this time, but York is confident in replicating the mother flame, then they probably aren't the same bc I imagine they would've tried to use the fusion reactor on the giant robot by now... That or she's just straight up lying about being able to replicate it/the existence of the reactor. Or Shaka was lying. Or it's powered by something way more abstract than the sun, like joy or freedom or something and that's why it lost power in Mariejois and the Punks couldn't figure out the power source and then it finally started back up when Luffy went Gear 5. Kuma activated something on Mariejois that activates the robot again. I think this is the most likely one given what we know so far, plus it's the easiest explanation. It also would make sense if the G5 drums are a red herring. Then Robot is going to continue doing what he was doing all that time ago. I still hope it is looking for that giant straw hat. Robot please destroy Imu's stupid little butterfly garden.

There's another/outside group controlling the robot and they decided now would be a good time with all this shit going down. I think last time I talked abt it I mentioned the revolutionaries? They're a candidate but honestly with the way Oda writes it could be anyone, and probably a group we haven't met yet.

Side note, I wanna see gigant Luffy and demonio fleur Robin bro-ing it out now. A giant god and a giant demon... It will probably never happen since that'd take so much energy on both their parts, but it would be so cool!

You ever just look at the Met Gala outfits and think, damn, my sims would look amazing at an event like that? Well now they can!

Looking for sim actors/pirates!!

I got the amazing idea of, since my current sim is an actor, to have them be part of a Our Flag Means Death-like show! There are pirate show gigs in the sims 4, so why not!

I will mostly be doing the scenes and screenshots for the show *without* the acting gigs, however it’s still fun that they are an option! Maybe for when I feel lazy about taking screenshots.

BUT NOW IS THE PART WHERE YOU COME IN!!

I’m looking for sims to use as the other actors/actresses and/or characters for the show, and I’d love to include your creations in that cast!

If you choose to participate in this, here are some things that migth help you/some things to consider:

You can use cc in your creations, but please keep it either maxis match, maxis mix, or lite. You can also just not use cc at all! It’s okay!

You can make an actor/actress and give them a seperate character name and outfits for the show (ex. Jane Doe -> Lilly Drew in the show), or just create the actor/actress and leave the character creation for the show up to me, or you can just make the character without an identity outside of the show! Whichever seems easiest or more fun to you!

If you can, please describe what personality you’d like the sim/the character to have so I can try and do my best with them! Identities inside and/or outside of the show are apreciated too.

Backstories are optional.

If you happen to have ideas for ‘episodes’ or moments with your sim pirate that you think would be fun for me to do, feel free to let me know and I’ll do my best to make it happen!

A Spicy Kind of Lepacy - by bobapplesimblr

This lepacy is heavily inspired by legacy challenges like Not So Berry and, obviously, other Lepacies. It is also written with the idea that you have all the packs(maybe except Batuu and My first pet). 

Game packs and stuff packs will be added as optional generations in a different post OR a reblog attaching those rules to this post sometime later.

You are allowed to use premade save files and mods in this challenge :D I trust that you won't cheat too much.

Important Notes:

If you have mods that let you have different levels of fertility for your sims you may adopt the heir or have a surrogate/artificial insemination.

If you have mods that give your game deadly diseases or more sudden kinds of deaths and you’re scared you’ll lose the heir of some generations you may have precautionary extra heirs.

You may use custom traits, and custom careers in the generations that don’t have a specific career attached to them, but it is recommended that they still fit the theme of the generation.

The relationships can go however you’d like them to go. They can be monogamous or polyamorous, however you see fit. Spouses can hate each other even if it isn’t specified in the generation rules, siblings can hate each other, and you can have as many partners as you want your sim to have before finding a sim to spend the rest of their lives with. Or you could have a single parent! A lot of generations mention meeting your spouse at a certain location or a certain way, but you can totally divorce them later even if it’s not stated in the rules.

Generation 1 - Basegame

You just moved into a new town and you can't wait to meet all of your new neighbors! Your house is small, but that's fine, who doesn't like a bit of patchwork construction am I right?

Aspiration: Successful Lineage or Big Happy Family (If you have Parenthood you can also do Super Parent)

Career: 

With Get Famous:

Career Hop every time you get the new career call BUT ONLY if it is a basegame career.

Without Get Famous:

Career Hop manually and level up at least once in the career before changing it.

Skills: Max any 5 basegame skills

Goals:

Live in Willow Creek, Oasis Springs, or Newcrest. If you choose Newcrest it is advised that you at least add one other family into the world to be neighbors with.

Accept the welcome wagon and meet all of your neighbors and become friends with ALL of them.

Steal a neighbor's spouse.

Go through every basegame career before choosing one to stick with for the rest of the generation.

Start with a starter home but every time you need to expand you must add a room or story to the house in the style of the houses from "What Remains of Edith Finch" and "Hello Neighbor". Pictures bellow.

Have 3 similarly aged children, either triplets or just conceived one right after the other. These children can be had before or after marrying the stolen spouse.

In your old age buy a big new house, or move into an existing big house, with the money you've made over the years. **This will be the house that generations without worlds will live in**

2. Where do you get your fic ideas?

Almost always from either prompts, being particularly mad about something in canon, or being particularly mad about an aspect of fanon lol

18. Do you enjoy research?  Which fic of yours required the most research?

I do! But I try to avoid it for fanfic. My original fiction is usually historical or historically inspired fantasy so I try to not get bogged down in too much research for fanfic purposes lol. But that being said, my Grishaverse time loop fic has required the most research, both in just constantly referencing the books, but also I’ve had to look up appropriate food and specifically wedding customs when I ran out of worldbuilding/wanted to change it up a little bit.

22. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process?  How do you come up with titles?

Sometimes during, most often after! I usually either use a quote from the story or try to string together something random lol. When I’m really stumped or on a time crunch that’s when I go digging through classics and steal a line. For instance “Drop by drop upon the heart” is from Aeschylus. “Leave them and walk with dust” is from Cain by Lord Byron. and “And I said to the star: consume me” is from a Virginia Wolfe poem iirc? But I think that’s about it, I otherwise try to come up with my own titles.

23. Is writing the beginning, middle, or end of the story easiest? Hardest?

Hmm probably the ending! I often just struggle a little with how to end fanfic. Because while I do loosely outline, it’s usually not structured— which is how I would plan original fiction. So sometimes I do struggle with not knowing the ending or feeling like the story kind of just stopped instead of ending. With shorter stuff it’s easy because it’s a single scene, so ending the scene is enough. But I have the most trouble with ending fics that have multiple scenes.

24. How do you choose whose POV to write in?

Most of my fic ideas tend to center on something emotionally. Like a character learns of something difficult, is confronted with something, is trying to move past x thing, etc. So that tends to pretty intuitively lead to a POV choice. If I am doing multi POV however or otherwise undecided then I just try to pick based on whichever character has the most interesting internal thought process going on and/or whose emotional situation is least translatable via external markers.

Like if I’m writing a scene with and it boils down to on the one side, “Alina is sad” and on the other “Zoya is in love with her but she’s trying to hide it” then the latter is both more interesting and harder to get across from the alternative POV. So if I was weighing the two options, I’d write from Zoya’s perspective. (Which makes me a liar bc that was the last scene I just wrote in a fic and since it’s all Alina POV… I did not write from Zoya’s perspective)

25. What’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?

Brainstorming/outlining hands down. Everything else sucks and I hate it 💖

26. What’s your least favorite part of the writing process?

Drafting for sure. Also the last like 10% of editing really gets me. When something is close to done but not enough to post it. I just get frustrated and impatient lol.

27. What area of writing do you feel strongest in?

Probably matching character voices and keeping things ic, at least to how I perceive the character?

30. How much do you edit your fics?  Do you edit as you write or wait until you finish the first draft?

I try to keep editing at a prose level minimal tbh just bc I’m already really slow as a writer and my biggest challenge is just getting things written and finished. So I try to avoid any obstacles that’ll cause me to drag my feet. But also if I end up fucking hating a character choice I’m not averse to scrapping a scene and starting over. And again I will rearrange dialogue etc endlessly if I feel like it’s not working on a character level.

35. Do you use a beta reader/editor?

(hooboy, that’s a lot! I’m gonna omit a few if I think a previous question answers it already or if it’s stuff I haven’t done with him yet. this is still gonna be a long one though so strap in lmao)

Name: Kaen

Associated game/era: Skyrim

Age at beginning of game/relevant time period: Late twenties, a little bit younger than Amaril.

Race: Wood Elf

Sex/gender (bonus points if there's a cool answer): Nonbinary, a bit more masc-leaning, but he’s pretty much fine with any pronouns. Most people tend to use he/they.

Sexual orientation/preferences: Bisexual, tends to casually flirt with people

Class (or a general description of their skillset): Stealth-archer with a fondness for both illusion and restoration magic.

Where did they grow up? A city? A village? Isolated, in the wilderness? What was it like to leave?

He and Amaril both grew up in Leyawiin. They’d often go exploring in the wilderness outside the city together, although those outings became less and less frequent as Amaril’s parents tried to steer him towards fighting for the Thalmor. Although Kaen liked his home, he knew he’d have to leave someday, but he felt confident enough in his skills that the idea didn’t bother him too much. By the time he decided to help Amaril make a run for it, he had quite a good lay of the land, and with his guidance, the two were able to make it all the way to the Imperial City without being found.

What was their childhood like? Who raised them? Do they have siblings?

Kaen’s mother died when he was quite young, and his father, although loving, often found himself too busy with his work in the city to spend much time with his son. Kaen realized he was trying his best and never held any resentment towards his father, but he had to learn to take care of himself from a pretty young age. He’d often spend his days out exploring on his own or with Amaril, and he taught himself to hunt with a bow so he could help put food on the table.

If they are an adventurer, why did they choose that life? Did they choose it at all?

He always liked the idea of becoming an adventurer, but in the end, the choice was sort of necessary to help protect his friend. Going back home after that would’ve been too risky. And besides, he was having fun, so why not keep going with it?

Do they worship any gods? Who? How do they feel about the gods in general?

Kaen wasn’t really raised religious, but he’s gained a particular interest in Kynareth over the course of his travels.

What are their interpersonal relationships like? Are they close with many people?

Kaen’s definitely the more sociable of the two, and people tend to warm up to him pretty quickly. He has friends all over the place, and will often stop in and pay them a visit if he happens to return somewhere. His closest friendship is with Amaril though. The two are rarely ever seen apart.

Were they trying to cross the border? Why?

After laying low in the Imperial City for a while, blending in with the crowd, he and Amaril were unfortunately discovered and needed to go on the move again. They both decided getting out of Cyrodiil would be the safest for them, and since they were already heading that way, decided Skyrim would be the easiest option.

Do they follow Hadvar or Ralof? Why?

They weren’t really ‘following’ either, at least not intentionally, but ended up running into Hadvar after they ducked into a building for cover and stuck with him until reaching Riverwood so they wouldn’t look suspicious.

Do they pick a side in the Civil War?

No, since both Kaen and Amaril feel that siding with either would be risky for them.

How do they feel about Tullius and Ulfric on a personal level?

Kaen doesn’t really feel much of a connection to either of them for the most part. They recalled feeling a bit bad for Ulfric after reading his dossier in the Thalmor embassy, but it was only because

Absolutely not. Kaen may not be the Dragonborn himself, but he still thinks of Paarthurnax as family.

How do they feel about Delphine and the Greybeards?

He found the Greybeards’ silence a little awkward at first, but he’s alright with them. As for Delphine though, he’s still not over her asking them to kill Paarthurnax. Even though he isn’t the type to hold grudges, that still felt like such a slap in the face.

On a scale of 1-10, how much do they hate the Thalmor? The Empire?

They’re kind of on the fence about the Empire itself, especially in its current state, but they absolutely hate the Thalmor after what almost happened to Amaril.

What do they do at the war meeting? How does it go? Do they maintain neutrality?

They tried to stay as neutral as possible, but Elenwen being there was causing Amaril to get pretty agitated and they eventually had to tell her to leave.

How do they feel about their position as Dragonborn? Do they embrace the role? Does it terrify them? Do they take advantage of it?

Kaen isn’t actually the Dragonborn, Amaril is. But the two of them are practically inseparable, and even though Kaen can’t use the Thu’um himself, he’s happy to cheer Amaril on when he does.

first up is lon'qu

jesus christ he's fast ! that's even faster than my dear valentines effie. speed is in fact his most important stat in this build.

arcane devourer is such a nice weapon and gives him like every effect he wants... +5 to all stats in combat is always nice, extra damage reduction is good, and full null follow up effect if he outspeeds foe. nice. refine it for speed and he gets an extra +3 visible speed.

that is to say... i hope you're able to pull for rearmed chrom because he reaaaalllyyy wants this weapon.

speed is absolutely his most important stat due to the special he is running, godlike reflexes.

godlike reflexes provides true damage and unpierceable damage reduction ONLY if lon'qu wins the speed check against his foe. the green text in the description comes from engaging with marth, if emblem marth is not a unit you pulled for that is completely fine it only allows godlike reflexes to be looped easier, aka it isn't essential. godlike reflexes and speed smoke 4 can be inherited at the same time (more below)

atk/spd finish 4 is pretty much the best a slot skill a fast infantry unit can run currently. +7 atk/spd, true damage, healing, it has it all. important to note that the healing from atk/spd finish 4 will occur on lon'qu's counter attack after godlike reflexes is triggered

atk/spd finish 4 is on quite a few units but if you lack fodder for it you can run atk/spd ideal (with an outsourced visible buff) which is a cheaper alternative which still buffs atk and spd in combat

atk/spd ideal 4 is available from a monica combat manual available in divine codes 4

null c-disrupt 4 (stands for null counter disrupt) is an expensive skill but null c-disrupt 3 (which is easier to obtain) can be run instead. this prevents effects like windsweep, dazzling staff, and watersweep from preventing your counter attack so you never miss out on the healing on hit after triggering godlike reflexes. the difference between null c 3 and 4 is that null c 4 provides extra damage reduction and null c 3 does not. null c 4 is currently only available on legendary alear (who also has atk/spd finish !) and legendary guinivere.

null c disrupt 3 can be inherited from a fallen lyon combat manual in divine codes 2

lastly speed smoke 4 provides a debuff to foes within two spaces of the foe lon'qu attacked for -7 spd. it also grants spd +6 and the dodge status. the dodge status is a form of speed based damage reduction (that is pierceable unlike godlike reflexes) that reduces damage by the difference between lon'qu and foes speed stat multiplied by 4 up to 40% damage reduction.

for example if lon'qu has say 70 in combat speed and the foe has 65 in combat speed then lon'qu will get 20% damage reduction.

speed smoke 4 and godlike reflexes are both available from the flame tribe lyn combat manual in divine codes 4.

distant counter melee sacred seal allows lon'qu to be a mixed phase unit with the distant counter effect without sacrificing his a slot skill.

also look at my leif post for another build option (lon'qu can run the same build i suggested for leif)

as for virion

arcane darkbow is a nice weapon that grants the desperation effect in player phase, atk/spd +6 in combat, and grants half null follow up effect. it can also be refined to increase speed by 2

deadeye can be inherited from rearmed alcryst at the same time as arcane darkbow and grants virion a hefty damage increase as well as full damage reduction piercing when his special triggers.

flash sparrow is a nice A slot skill that can be inherited at the same time as both arcane darkbow and deadeye. it grants atk/spd+7 in combat if unit initiates and grants extra special charges if unit outspeeds. helps to trigger more deadeyes

as for phys null follow up... unsure what i was cooking, spd/def tempo 4 is a far better option. perhaps i forgot that darkbow has half null follow up. both phys null follow up and spd/def tempo 4 grant half damage reduction piercing on every attack so he can pierce damage reduction even when deadeye doesn't trigger.

what does half damage reduction piercing even mean ? if we take our example from before of the dodge status granting lon'qu 20% damage reduction against a foe with 5 less speed than him, if that foe had a skill with half damage reduction piercing then he would actually only have 10% damage reduction.

as for which skill to inherit... phys. null follow up is in the standard pool on ascended fir (who is also currently on the emblem marth banner) and it can be inherited alongside atk/spd oath 4. spd/def tempo 4 is currently only on attuned nino who is limited, however if you get spd/def tempo 4 you can also get the fleeting echo attuned skill at the same time.

if you cannot get either of these skills then i would recommend running spd/def tempo 3 for the full tempo effect (neutralizes skills that slow unit's special charging and neutralizes skills that increase foe's special charging)

spd/def tempo 3 (and flash sparrow prerequisite fodder) can be acquired from the young mia combat manual in divine codes 4.

atk/spd oath 4 provides extra visible +6 atk and spd as well as warping for extra mobility. it can be inherited alongside phys null follow up from ascended fir however its also available in divine codes.

the m!shez combat manual in divine codes 4 has atk/spd oath 4

blade session seal provides the most atk and spd stack from a sacred seal in hopes that virion will be more likely to win the speed check for flash sparrow

1. What was the first fandom and/or pairing that you wrote fic for?

OOF IT TAKES ME BACK i can't be absolutely certain, because i used to write a bunch of little things and i've forgotten the vast majority, but i'm pretty sure Warrior Cats was the first one. spent a lot of time on roleplay forums and started writing my own fan clans. i used to think it wasn't fanfiction because none of the original characters were there, and sometimes not even the original context, just the same framework or concept -- but i think it counts. that means no shipping, though, unless you count my own characters

the first non-OC pairing i wrote fic for was... hm.... almost batman/joker, except i only thought about scenarios and didn't put them to paper, so i'd have to say corvosider -- it's the first fic on my ao3.

6. If you’re really concentrating, how many words can you write in a day?

ohhhhhhh man i have no clue. if i'm focused and inspired and well-rested and everything all at once? i think i've managed 2500-3000 words in a day, maybe a little more? i've never properly counted. i'm constantly keeping track of Number Getting Bigger but not in any specific way, just as a Look See You Are Adding Words It's Not Completely Hopeless kind of thing. internet snail is slow

14. If you were stuck on a desert island with only two characters, which would you pick?

wait wait wait......... i have to pick two characters to potentially accompany me to a desert island and then pick which one out of those two i actually want? or is this an exercise in generalization?

if option two, i'd pick whichever one is least likely to kill and eat me, and most likely to know what the fuck they're doing in this environment, because i sure won't. OH WAIT I JUST REALIZED. YOU MEAN WHICH TWO CHARACTERS WOULD I PICK TO BRING WITH ME. NOT WHICH OF THE TWO

17. What fic are you most proud of?

an excellent question that i have no idea how to answer!!!! i have a hard time feeling proud of what i write. sometimes i'm proud immediately after and then i hate it with a passion for months and then a year or two later i'm like nah it's fine. i think currently the one i feel is most accomplished is the fae corvo one -- i set out to do a thing, i did the thing, it's finished, i enjoyed writing it, i enjoy rereading it, it doesn't bring up too many complicated emotions in me. but that's kind of the thing -- i know how to feel about it because how i feel about it is simple. i'm pretty proud of other stuff as well, but there's so much else going on at the same time that i can't really quantify it

19. Who is the easiest/hardest character for you to write about? Why?

easiest: i think emily (as a child), actually. this is a recent development but i got a grasp of what i wanted her to be like and got comfortable with it way faster than i'm used to, and i think her voice comes out clearest when i write fic where she shows up these days. i have ideas for how she'd react to things, how she sees the world and the people around her... basically she's easier for me to understand and give life/volume to.

hardest: i think i'd put a lot of characters on the same level there, actually, primarily because they're secondary characters i hardly ever spend time on and thus haven't gotten to know. of the characters i've tried to integrate into fic, i think the hardest ones have been delilah and corvo-trying-to-parent, delilah because i imagine her as constantly on the lookout for how to take advantage of a situation, which is deeply exhausting to me, and corvo-trying-to-parent because parenting is itself hard for me to parse and trying to see it through the additional filter of his eyes makes the task even more complicated

30. Tell us an idea for a longfic you want to write in the future.

OH MAN okay. i've probably mentioned it once or twice but it's been percolating for quite a while now, and even though i'd have to write the base fic first before this one, because it's an au of an au, i keep coming back to it. the basic principle is, you take the Prince Daud fic i half-wrote some years back, and you make it high chaos. corvo is killed on the way back to dunwall as a trade for daud's people, imprisoned in coldridge, but since this decision was very spur of the moment and daud and his retinue have made no plans for what they're going to tell the crew, his actual body gets dumped overboard -- and then the outsider takes over from there. think the Heart but with an entire human body, and think the world we got a glimpse of in that shard of black mirror or whatever it was that zhukov had, and think what would happen if the outsider was both worse and more proactive about walking out of the void. add body horror and corvodaud, obviously. delicious soup. something something contracts written into bone, something something the warping of emily kaldwin, something something physical codependence, hrrrgh

 “Tell me, Julie,” Yoshiko said as he looked around at all the creatures getting off the ship. “I assume Helvetian will not be an option for me…”  Julie shook her head when Yoshiko’s eyes momentarily rested on her.  “You will have to learn one of Earth’s numerous languages,” she answered. “It depends on the nationality you are given with your identification card, and what your name translates to up here.”  “They will translate my name?” Yoshiko was worried of losing the name which Kasumi had given him and which he had since then treasured.  Julie shrugged and started to rummage through the little pouch she carried on her waist. She pulled up an odd looking piece of hard material onto which was neatly written what Yoshiko assumed was her name and a series of numbers that looked like dates, along with a miniature portrait of her.  “It is called an ID,” Julie explained, handing it to Yoshiko. “It states your full name - in the language of whichever Earthian nationality is give to you - your birthday, how long the card is valid, and your nationality of course.”  Yoshiko looked closely at the card. It must have been a very skilled artist to have been able to make such a detailed yet small portrait of someone.  “See here,” Julie pointed at the top row of letters. “That is my translated name. Well, actually, it is my real name. My Helvetian name is my translated one.”  “Julie Fantasy,” Yoshiko read with a thick Helvetian accent.  “Better than nothing,” Julie chuckled at Yoshiko’s pronunciation. “We better get in line or we will never get out of here.” She pushed Yoshiko gently towards the forming line at the end of the dock.  “What do you think my translated name will be?” Yoshiko wondered, and Julie could hear the anxiousness in his voice.  “Let me see,” she said slowly, thinking it over. “How do you spell your name?”  “Yuxhecu.”  Julie went over the Helvetian letters in her head, translating them one by one.  “Yoshiko,” she said after a moment, and looked up at him. “It sounds Japanese.”  “Japanese?” Yoshiko had no idea what that meant.  “It is not the easiest language to learn, but I am sure you could do it. Do you have another name? Or is it simply Yuxhecu?”  “Yuxhecu Ice Wrisc,” Yoshiko replied.  “Aki… B- Black!”  “That sounds odd,” Yoshiko grimaced at the sound of his new name.  “Bilingual,” Julie corrected. “It means you could also be English with a surname like Black. Much easier. I would pick that if I were you.” “Thank you for your advice.”

 “ID?”  Yoshiko looked at the fat man sitting on the other side of the table.  “It is his first time on Earth,” Julie said from over Yoshiko’s shoulder and smiled when the customs officer glared at her.  The man sighed heavily before saying: “Name?”  Yoshiko said his full name and made sure to pronounce it properly so the man could spell it right and give him the easier nationality.  “Yoshiko Aki Black,” the customs officer said while scribbling it down on a sheet of paper. “Congratulations. You get to choose if you want to be Japanese, Finnish, or English.”  Finnish hadn’t been one of Julie’s suggestions, so Yoshiko quickly looked over at her questioningly. She mouthed the word “English” and nodded encouragingly.  “English, please,” Yoshiko replied and the man wrote it down.  “Okay, kid, here is the deal: you have sort of Asian looks, and an Asian first name…”  Yoshiko swallowed. Had he done something wrong?  “…so I will grant you a British nationality.” The customs officer continued scribbling down Yoshiko’s new information with a dull look on his face as he spoke. “But if someone were to ask, you are adopted.” The man gestured along the table as a sign for Yoshiko to move on to the next checkpoint. “Next!”  Julie gently motioned for Yoshiko to go as she stepped up to the fat man with her ID in hand.  Yoshiko was confused to what had just happened, but went along, hoping Julie would explain when they eventually got out of the line. The man hadn’t mentioned anything about English after he’d made his choice.  Julie was soon right back behind him and told Yoshiko that Britain was a good choice, and that their major language was English. Yoshiko vaguely wondered why the nation and their language had different names.  “That’s good,” Julie added with a smile. “I’m British too, so I’ll teach you as much as possible.”  With her reassurance Yoshiko felt a slight glimmer of hope for his new life on Earth.
