Sorel Etrog (1933-2014)
For us in Europe this is a lesser known artist/sculptor. But it appears that Etrog had his exhibitions at the Marlborough gallery and Galerie d’Eendt in the mid Seventies. In 2000, a Toronto newspaper dubbed artist Sorel Etrog the “Grand Old Man of Canadian Sculpture.” It was an apt description, after a career spanning five decades including the installation of outdoor sculptures across Toronto,…

Gordon Cheung and Sorel Etrog EXPO Chicago 2019 with Edel Assanti Booth 161 | 19-22 Sept 2019 More info contact [email protected] Expo Chicago Navy Pier 600 E.Grand Avenue Chicago, IL 60611 💫 Sat 21 Sept 15:30-17:00 Gordon Cheung talk hosted by @iscreativeagency at Chicago Public Library, Chinatown 💫 Gordon Cheung, Staring at the Sun, 2019, financial newspaper, archival inkjet and acrylic on canvas, 78 3/4 x 59 1/8 inches (200 x 150 cm) 💫 In many cultures the sun symbolises the Emperor and staring at would blind you. The graffiti image of Winnie the Pooh is in reference to the internet censorship after an image of Pooh went viral when compared to Xi Jinping, President of China. The reference to Pooh here has been updated to reference his inclusion of himself into the constitution that no-one has achieved since Chairman Mao. The building, a nail house is so called due to the proverb ‘if a nail sticks up bang it down with a hammer’. Normally it is the last home to sell in a development and some went viral on the internet due to resisting the developers’ predatory techniques of pressuring owners into vacating. They symbolised the family unit versus corporate and state power. As a result the censors banned images of Nail houses. The title plays on the idea of blindness and that which provides life; the relationship between power and subjugation in the name of progress. 💫 #GordonCheung @edelassanti @expochicago #Art #Painting #ChicagoExpo #EdelAssanti (EXPO CHICAGO) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2cXvm6FmHY/?igshid=nfdzo8drob4u

“4me4you” visits Edel Assanti Gallery, which featured Sorel Etrog: -Doors open from the inside only - .
Drawn primarily from the period between 1968 and 1975, the works focus on two motifs that remained consistent through much of Etrog's oeuvre: links and hinges. These devices were frequently deployed in his "abstracted figurative" sculptures, paintings and drawings as a means of transforming the human body or landscape into a web of industrial forms appropriated from common hardware stores. The works' joints, muscles and limbs - rendered as mechanical, functional apparatus - oscillate between a poetic expression of humanity's interconnectivity and an anxiety about our place within an automated society.
