Catgirl was sitting in front of her godfather Batman and spoke to him in sign language. He was listening to her explanation of why she won't talk about her grandmother's powers, the Lucky Girl was half alien and was a magic user. The Dark Knight held his hand up, which made the young girl stop immediately and nodded with an understanding look.
Batman knew her mother and father so well. His friends were loyal and nice to him that they let him hold their daughter, who's sitting on a chair in front of him at a conference room. The billionaire playboy was the first person who saw the symptoms and kept a sharp eye on his godchild, because Catgirl was staying silent about her pain.
"Eva, it's not good for you to hide your powers away and contain them against your will. That inhibitor collar has to come off your neck or they'll be no missions for you anymore, you're hurting yourself and not trusting what you can do. They saw how you can use magic, but this is what made you special and unique like your mother. Let me see your left arm," the Lucky Girl was hesitant and complies, rolling her long sleeve to reveal that the transformation has begun due to negative feelings and emotions. "I do truly appreciate your decisions of getting therapy from Dinah, yet you're still hiding yourself from the Team and not letting them have their pain back Eva. Your mother and her family was excellent help to you...just trust me on this and stop doubting yourself. Your insecurities will haunt you for the rest of your life if you don't tell the Team why you haven't been doing missions with them since wearing the Mask of Destiny and Helmet of Fate...please for the sake of your loved ones. We'll always love you for how caring, kind, loyal, and supportive you've been with all of us...including me."
Catgirl hugs him after pulling her sleeve down and covering the proof. Batman pats her back as she begins silently crying and sobbing. The Dark Knight let her break down into tears and hide her face from the view of Justice League members, who were part of the meeting about the Lucky Girl.
Once the meeting was over, Batman held her hand in his and ruffles her hair. Catgirl smiles sadly up at her godfather and nods. He lets her go back to Mount Justice and hears her designation number being called out.
"Bruce, I know you're worried about her like I am, that's why she got us and the rest." The Dark Knight sighs and hugs his best friend Astro Woman. "We gotta hope for the best and pray nothing bad happens over in the mountain, especially when Wally tends to surprise her the most."
Catgirl walks through the Boom Tube with her bag on her back and tired eyes. Her platinum white wig was miraculously stuck in a high ponytail and her matte black lipstick wasn't stained around her soft lips. The Team heard their teammate walking and saw the Lucky Girl still exhausted from last mission, which almost cost her life.
"Hey Cat, how's your meeting at the Hall of Justice?" Catgirl grumbled softly underneath her breath and tiredly plops onto Wonder Girl, who caught the Lucky Girl on time.
"You want me to carry you to your room Kitty?" The Lucky Girl nodded quietly and clung onto the female demigod's front.
Wonder Girl carries her back into her bedroom and gently set the younger girl onto her bed. Catgirl hums in appreciation and purrs softly as the Amazon warrior pets her head, coaxing her to fall asleep hard. As soon as Wonder Girl heard soft snores and deep breathing from the Lucky Girl, she smiles and puts a blanket over the young girl.
The female demigod carefully left the room and closed the door. Wonder Girl heads back to the lounge, raising an eyebrow at her boyfriend Aqualad and shaking her head no with a deep frown. The Atlantean soldier understood that look and knew it meant there's something wrong with their youngest member.
Ever since the Team was formed...Catgirl was the first heroine to be part of it, she lived in the mountain and was always doing her work at her bedroom due to personal spacing. The Lucky Girl got used to the Boy of Steel and would be his support system whenever he's having problems with Superman, which shocked the Justice League cause the young mute girl rarely let people rather than them and Red Arrow be close to her. The rest of the original members in the Team will treat her like a baby and always adore Catgirl for being independent.
For example...the Team came back wounded and hurt, she sprung from her chair in front of the Super Computer and took them to med bay. Wonder Girl managed to heal herself and helped the Lucky Girl with treating their comrades, though an appreciative comment from the Boy Wonder threw Catgirl's brain off so quick that she went redder than a strawberry. The three teenage girls never stopped pinching her rosy cheeks since that incident, what got the Lucky Girl on her feet and running away into her hiding places from the trio will be the words "DRESS-UP", and all four boys will chuckle from how the mute girl showed fear for the first time.
"Is Cat okay?" Superboy asked the female demigod, worrying about the mute girl who became a baby sister to him.
"The League took her to an important conference meeting this morning, based on her reaction...they wore her out." Robin answered for the Boy of Steel.
"Roy did claim to me that Cat's been keeping a secret from us, he thinks she's the mole...but seriously? If she was the traitor, how come she'll always return back in the mountain stressed out and exhausted? That's the most dumbest thing I'd ever heard," the Amazon warrior explained to them.
"Unless...we could...you know," the teenage speedster suggested, earning raised eyebrows and confused looks until they realize what Kid Flash was trying to suggest.
"Baywatch, Cat will never forgive us if we do that. That's her private diary, it has her personal life in it." Artemis told him, smacking him upside his head.
"First off...Ow! Secondly, don't act like you wanna know what she writes in it." Robin nodded in agreement and the rest was hesitant, but they finally agreed to their plan. "Now who's getting it and the key?"
The Team said "NOT IT" at different times, Robin groans in defeat s the rest gave him pointed looks and the Boy Wonder does the deed. He slowly hacks into the room and slides the door open, seeing the Lucky Girl curled up asleep in a tiny ball. Robin smiles and quietly awes at his crush's cuteness.
'Alright Robin, it's just a book. My crush's book of secrets, it can't be that bad.' The Boy Wonder thought as he sneakily took her book case with the key and leaves the dark bedroom without being noticed. 'Cat must be dead asleep from that meeting with our mentors, poor little kitten must be tired from all those mission reports as well to stack that much stress on her body.'
Robin silently closes the door and resets the password to her grandma's name. Kid Flash immediately takes his best friend to the living room and they high-five with proud grins on their faces. The Team sat down on their chosen spots as Miss Martian takes the book and opens the case with the key.
"This is so wrong in so many levels guys," the female archer said while seeing the front cover has a picture of her with the Team on it. "She got us on the front and the back...let's hurry and agree not to do this anymore."
The female Martian takes the personal book out from the case and sets the diamond box down. Catgirl's private diary was themed with black words, gray covers, white paper, and silver lining. Miss Martian gulps nervously and passes the book to Wonder Girl, who gave her best friend a wide-eyed look of disbelief.
"M'gann," the female demigod said with an offended look. "How could you? I'm not dying in the hands of a twelve year old girl...here Rob, you read it."
The Boy Wonder pouts at Wonder Girl and opens the book. Robin begins reading it out loud to his comrades, blushing when he finds out Catgirl got a crush on him and saw many insecure thoughts she has about herself. Red Arrow was wrong about the Lucky Girl, but they were beginning to feel concern on the mute girl's issues and problems.
"Ever since the League found out what was happening to me within the Helmet of Fate, I've been contacting my grandfather Kent through Nabu with my grandma's help and assistance with the Mask of Destiny. All the stress, fear, and pain was causing negative reactions to my powers and humanity. My father fixed one of those problems...that golden collar on my neck, it was containing my alien side from losing control and it sorta helped me. After twelve years of it on my neck, it's not working and was making it worse. The Team are starting to see signs of it, I've lost my appetite with food last week, I couldn't get sleep since a few months ago, and becoming much sensitive with my emotions on a daily basis that Batman forced me into therapy sessions with Black Canary. I'm afraid of the rejection and betrayal the people I cared the most think of me. There's five stages of it, I went through four of them, the fifth one will be most painful one cause this will damage me inside out and turn me into a monstrous freak. I got many anxiety attacks and went into panic mode during the meeting. I'm not relieved from it, not because my grandmother injected me with my painkillers and antidepressants...I had almost hurt the League. I know they're scared of me...who won't? After all, I'm nothing but a burden and a monster. Nobody can change that, not even the Team...I should probably run away and never return to Earth after tomorrow night when everyone's asleep. They won't be hurt anymore...especially when I'm gone far away from my grandmother's home planet." Robin read, closing it and putting it inside the black box.
The Boy Wonder locked the box shut and hung the key back onto its hook behind the case. Robin got up from his spot and walks to his crush's room. The Team watches their youngest male teammate slowly opens the door and sees that Catgirl was still resting.
Kid Flash ushers Robin out of the room and freezes when the Lucky Girl moves in her sleep. The rest drags the two boys out from her room before letting Superboy close the door shut and hearing it lock itself automatically. The Team frowns sadly as they stared at Catgirl's bedroom door and felt guilty for how they assumed that she's the mole.
The next day inside the mountain, Catgirl wakes up and does her daily routine before taking her prescribed medication. The Lucky Girl rolls up her long sleeves and gasps silently when she sees it got worse than ever from the nightmarish thoughts echoing her head. The mute girl takes a deep breath and hides the proof from view.
"Kitty, are you up yet?" Wonder Girl asked the Lucky Girl.
The young child quickly grabs her baggy jacket and a pair of black sweatpants to conceal how her casual clothes she loves wearing the most have vanished. Catgirl puts on her wig and applied her makeup before putting on her shades. The Lucky Girl heads out of her room with her bag strapped on her back with her diary case hidden inside it and walks to the kitchen for some fruit.
Once she found a green apple, the Black Cat vigilante took a bite from it and passes her teammates with a greeting wave. Catgirl pets Wolf and rubs Sphere gently with a softened look while going outside to the beach. The Lucky Girl begins absorbing some solar energy and feeling it generate some pure cosmic mana for her to devour by consuming the life-force phoenix within her inner self.
Inside the mountain, Robin begun hacking into the cameras and managed to get full access to the beach's ones. The Team watched Catgirl meditate by herself on a large rock and levitating, which made them shocked cause they thought it was all something she wrote behind their backs. The Lucky Girl used her mana to grab a bottle of nectar and drank the liquid, humming in content while she takes pure magic energy from the Sun and use the life-force from the Moon to try fixing her issues.
"Everything in that book was true, she does have powers." Kid Flash said.
The seven heroes noticed something glowing from her left side, the Team gasps in disbelied when Catgirl rolls up her long sleeves to reveal that her right arm was scarred and her left arm was encased with some kind of cosmic ice mana. They continued seeing the Lucky Girl getting distressed and on high alert. The mute girl begun taking deep breaths and slowly tries to calm down.
"That was her secret," their leader told them after understanding why she wore long sleeves and anything baggy.
"Recognize: Catgirl; B-0-0."
The Team froze to hear their beloved comrade's designation number called out by the Super Computer and knew she's behind them now. Wonder Girl slowly turns and sees Catgirl, who was looking scared and was actually frightened. The rest followed and knew by her scared expression that the Lucky Girl was caught red-handed.
"Cat, it's not what it looks like. We're worried about you," the Lucky Girl immediately flinches when Superboy takes a step forward and tries not to lose her composure.
"What was that on your arm?" Catgirl shook her head no while backing away and panting with a horrified look on her face.
"We're not gonna hurt you Kitty, we wanna help you get through this...just trust us okay?" Wonder Girl told her, following the mute girl and walking closer to the young child's personal space.
'Get away Opal, stay away from me.' Catgirl thought while shaking like crazy and trying not to lose control of her powers. 'Stay away from me, stay away from me, stay away from me...'
The Team could see that Catgirl was sweating from the fear and discomfort while she cuffs her hands together to keep her powers in check. The Lucky Girl's inner self was trying their best with her host and attempting to comfort the mute girl from the tension. As soon as Wonder Girl got closer, their six comrades grew concerned and wait for the next move.
"I said...STAY...AWAY...FROM ME!!!" An energy wave of mana was shot through her hands and hit Wonder Girl hard along with their loved ones, who groaned in pain from the magic blast.
'I hurt them,' the Lucky Girl thought with fear and guilt. 'I really am a monster...'
Robin watches Catgirl rushes into the Boom Tube through blurry eyes, hearing her call number and passing out with his six best friends. The Lucky Girl made it to her stop at the nearest subway station and luckily got herself a ticket. She sat down on the bench and wait for her subway train to come.
"Excuse me miss," the Lucky Girl turned to see some little kids and gave them a wave. "Do you got some food and water for us?"
Catgirl nodded, she begun taking out some sandwiches and bottles of water from her duffle bag. The kids thanked the mute girl and hugged her, which she responded with a pat on their backs and ruffling the hair on their heads. The Lucky Girl got her violin and thought about something to do for the children.
The selectively mute girl put her duffle bag to the side with a protective mana shield around it and stood on the bench. Catgirl thought about the hard times and good memories she have with the Team. The Lucky Girl takes a deep breath and begins playing her song.
Once the song ended, the people surrounding her applauded for her performance and put some money into her backpack. Catgirl bows for the crowd and hands some candy to the children, who cheered for her generous gifts to them. The Lucky Girl put her violin back in its case and heard her train number.
'Great, Raven and the rest are going after me too.' Catgirl thought as she heard her crow cawing ring tone for Raven, hanging up and setting her phone on silent mode.
Meanwhile near New York City, the Team couldn't find their Black Cat and won't give up searching for the mute girl. Catgirl's icy aura left some trails that leads to her and the seven sidekicks followed them to reach the fixed subway station underground at Manhattan. The Lucky Girl must've gotten down there for a train ticket and go somewhere else.
Around Broadway, Catgirl stepped onto her destination and gave a sincere smile to the people who helped her with her things. The Lucky Girl walked upstairs and saw the lights in amazement. The mute girl was relieved that her clothes she wore was back in her bag, but her gym clothes was affected by the transformation and was worrying her a lot.
The transformation was almost done, Catgirl got until midnight and the pain will fade from her body by replacing it with euphoria. Her inner alien side was keeping her stable from the toxicity of every environment and person she walks into by accident. The Lucky Girl tightens her cloak and vanishes into the shadows of night.
"Cat? Cat, where are you? Please come back home, we miss you." The Lucky Girl froze to hear the worry and saw the concerns of the Team's faces.
Catgirl gulps while looking at the mirror, seeing that it was getting darker and the metamorphosis was getting close to completion. She checks her watch and went scared...it was around eleven fifty-five at night, which meant her travel through New York City and its famous place must've been lasting longer than a hour. Catgirl kept her breaths silent and her heart couldn't stop beating like crazy.
The Lucky Girl suddenly shivers from the cold air and tries not to sneeze, which will trigger Superboy into finding her first. She held back the noise while sneaking away and going between a billboard. Catgirl sighs in relief until she lets out a sneeze, which sounds soft and cute like a kitten.
The Cadmus clone heard Catgirl's adorable sneeze, freezing and snapping his head at the billlboard. His six teammates followed his glance to the billboard where they were having a music award show and realized that she was in Broadway. Catgirl begun panicking with distress while her ice mana went into waves of energy and kept glowing bright like the stars in the sky.
"Kitty, please...for everyone's sake, just show yourself and we'll take you home...safe and sound." Catgirl scoffed from Wonder Girl's words in response, she sees a clear opening and takes a deep breath. "Cat...I don't wanna chase you all through morning, it's Saturday now and all I wanna do now...is sleep."
Catgirl's black pupils turned into slits and she let her transformation consume her completely after hearing her watch beep, signaling that it has struck midnight. The Lucky Girl starts flying in the air and the Team begun chasing her. Catgirl dodged the signs and construct some cold mana to block her loved ones from grabbing her.
The mute girl found herself flying to Central Park and hiding inside one of the cherry blossom trees, shifting into a white cat with blue eyes and black collar that has a silver bell on it. The Team reached there, they didn't see her use her witch arts to turn into a cat and climb up the blooming tree. Robin and Artemis saw ice footprints of a cat leading up to the tree they saw in front of them.
"Cat, please come down." Robin said, desperately begging for his crush to come down the tree.
"No! Go away!" Catgirl replied, refusing to come down and face her fifteen loved ones. "Y'all went through my book and spied on me to see my secret! I just wanna be left alone...like I'm always been."
The Boy Wonder begun climbing up the tree, seeing Catgirl as a domestic white feline heal herself with her mana to close the scars and burns away. Robin sees the burns on the cloak and knew they accidentally hurt her during their chase, which led to her using her magic for a portal as a transportation route to Central Park. Not only that, Catgirl took off the cloak and left it behind after it made her feel uncomfortable.
He kept his eyes alert while she shifts out of that form and reveals something...beautiful. The Lucky Girl was looking extraordinary within her final alien form and was trying not to have another anxiety attack. Catgirl felt a familiar presence close to her space, which meant her crush and destined mate have found her.
Tumblr media
The younger vigilante slowly turns and grew scared to see Robin staring at her form. She saw his hand reaching out for her and flinches out of fear. The Boy Wonder shushes her soft whimpers as he pulls her in a hug and she breaks down into tears.
"Shhh, it's okay Cat, we're not hurt, you're not alone." Robin said, comforting the Lucky Girl as she hiccups and sobs in his chest. "We're sorry for what we've done...please, just come home with us."
Catgirl closes her eyes and lets the Boy Wonder carry her out of the cherry blossom tree. The rest of the Team freezes to see the Lucky Girl went through her final transformation and became her true form. Robin cradles her close while she cries softly in his chest and clung onto him tight.
Catgirl slowly relaxes and turns to face the Team with her head down. When she raises her head up, Miss Martian was shocked to see an Anodite for the very first time and realized that bedtime stories about that alien species from her uncle were true...the Lucky Girl was one of them. The female Martian walks over to the shy girl and hugs her tight, causing Catgirl to freeze with shock and accidentally release a wave of mana from her body that made the rest of the Team relaxed.
'Oh you poor little thing,' the female Martian said to Catgirl in a telepathic link while holding Catgirl.
'Why M'gann,' the Lucky Girl whined while blushing and hugging her back. 'Conner, help me...she won't let me go now.'
Superboy joins the hug with the rest of their friends, Catgirl pouts at the alien couple in betrayal for their friendly affections on her and how it spread towards them. The Lucky Girl's inner felt the trust and safety within all fifteen sidekicks, leading for the shy girl to close her eyes in content. As soon as the Team pulled away, Catgirl opens her eyes and felt somebody holding her hand in theirs.
Robin squeezes it in reassurance before kissing her forehead and she squeaks, flustering madly while the rest smiles at the two vigilantes. Catgirl crosses her arms and grew a bit confident. The Boy Wonder sees the mischievous smile written on her lips and was suddenly floating around her cyan mana hair, staring at his crush in amazement for pulling that trick while their loved ones watched the two from above.
"You're beautiful Cat, I wish I could've help you with your pain." Robin told her softly while she hugs him and hums with a bright grin on his face.
"You and the Team did that, I can actually sense the genuine worry and concern y'all have for me. I finally realized that I wasn't alone anymore, I have all of you...especially you pretty bird." Catgirl replied before kissing him passionately and smiling when Robin kisses her back.
The two pulled away as the Lucky Girl helped them both safely on lower ground and smiled at each other, chuckling at the romantic scenario with amusement. Robin was about to kiss her again when Kid Flash cheekily takes Catgirl and zooms away from his best friend. The Boy Wonder gawks at the speedster in shock as he storms after him and tries to grab his Black Cat back.
"Did you get your picture now Artie?" Artemis nodded with a victorious smirk and sends it to Roy with the money signs on it.
"Told that jerk Robin will be her first kiss, he lost big time." Her four comrades chuckled before heading into the Bio-Ship with their female archer.
Robin came back with Catgirl over his shoulder and back in her human form at last, setting her down by his side. Kid Flash sped up and went in the ship next. The two vigilantes smile before stepping into there and holding hands together...as a young couple.

Biology of Billy Hargrove [11]
Fandom: Stranger Things Pairing: Billy x Reader Word Count: 1.7k Warning: none Read more: Biology of Billy Hargrove Masterlist
“Language!” Your father yells, peeking his head out of the front door.
“Sorry,” You drop your head, watching your feet as you walk back to the door, stopping before you walk in and turning to Max. You open your mouth, but before you say anything you shake your head and walk inside closing the door tightly behind you.
“What’s going on young lady?” Dad asks, eyebrows raised and arms folded across his chest. “I’ve never heard you use words like that.”
“Just frustrated and tired, it won’t happen again, I promise.”
“I doubt that,” He chuckles, “Just watch what you say around your mother, you know how she gets.” His eyes widen dramatically as he pats your shoulder and walks past you.
Your parents are polar opposites and most days you wonder how in the world they have been together. Your dad is laid back and goofy, and always was, as he would say ‘the class clown of Hawkins High’ which your mother would agree was a fact and likely holds the record. Your dad is also a hard-working business man outside of the home. He is basically an older, male version of his sister, Lottie.
Your mother is kind, but no-nonsense woman with a love of literature and sewing, which is probably where you got your determination for doing well in classes and love for reading. Your parents purchased an old video store in which they turned into a bookstore that your mother has been managing for the past four years. You normally work there during the summers to help out, but once you graduate, you’ve agreed to take over the bookstore as she has grown tired of it. She is the kind of mother that would sing lullabies and bake cupcakes for your class, but would also ground you for a week for getting a ‘C’ on a spelling test. She would set up beautiful parties for your birthday, but leave someone else to watch over you and your friends.
“…Y/n?” Your dad’s voice calls out from behind you.
“Yeah?” You turn to face him.
“You having trouble with that Hargrove kid?” He asks, eyebrow raised.
“Kind of, but it’s nothing that I cannot handle.” You shrug it off. “Thanks, Dad.”
“You let me know if you need me to…” He draws his finger across his throat as he crosses his eyes and sticks out his tongue.
“You’ll have to get in line behind Gary and Lottie.”
“Hey, I’m your dad, I think I deserve first in line.” He playfully boxes the air.
“I love you, Dad.” You laugh, wrapping your arms around him in a hug.
“I love you too, kiddo.” His deep chuckles vibrate his chest. “Now you better go make sure you have everything together for school tomorrow.”
***
At school the next day you are walking the hallways with Angie, books held tight to your chest as the two of you walk to your class together. She’s going on about her boyfriend, Joseph, who moved an hour away for college and how he is going to be back in town this week as college classes had just ended for the summer. She’s ecstatic because they actually get to spend some quality time together, especially with the school year coming to an end in a week and a half.
“…And his cousin Davey, the hot one, is going to be staying with him for a week or two and Joe said Davey thinks you’re cute. You should go to Vickie’s party with Davey on Wednesday.” Angie rambles.
“Wait, Angie is having a party in the middle of the week?” You ask, confused.
“Oh, yeah! Thursday is senior skip day. You think your mom’ll let you skip?”
“Mom would rather walk through hell in heels before she lets me skip school after being suspended.” You scoff. “I may be able to get away with going to the party and work something out with Dad, he’d understand.”
“I would die if you couldn’t!” Angie says dramatically.
“Angela, we are in English not theatre, please tone it down and take your seat.” Mr. Jordan glares over the thick brim of his glasses.
“Tone it down and take your seat. Blah, blah, blah.” She mocks him under her breath as the two of you walk to your normal seats.
The class slowly fills and right before the bell signals the start of class, Billy strolls in smirk playing across his face eating up all the attention from being back to school after being suspended. The popular, empty-headed girls warmly welcome him, calling him to a spot they save especially for him. As he stalks up to them, he glances over at you, face unreadable. It feels like the two of you are caught in a staring battle before one of the girls break it by grabbing Billy by the shirt and pulling him into the seat next to her.
“What was that about?” Angie leans across the aisle and whispers.
“I told you we aren’t on the best of terms right now. He’s just trying to intimidate me.” You open up your book.
“Y/n, that wasn’t a ‘fuck you’ look, but a ‘I want to fuck you’ look.” Angie nudges you, eyebrows raised.
“Whatever.” You scoff quietly.
“Y/n, you’ve just returned to school after your lengthy suspension, is being in my class today an issue?” Mr. Jordan call out in front of the class.
“No, sir.” You shake your head.
“And I trust you can act like a proper lady in the class room and keep quiet?” He looks down at you, arms folded across his chest.
“Yes, sir.” You say simple, biting your tongue in order to refrain from calling him out for talking to you like that.
“Thank you.” He smirks, turning back to the chalkboard.
With your head ducked like a scolded puppy, you glance over at Angie who mouths a guilty ‘sorry’ and you catch Billy looking at you, small smirk playing at his lips. You want to smack that smirk right off his devilishly handsome face. You want to not think he is so handsome, that his lips are so soft and kissable. You sigh, looking back at the chalkboard and your teacher accepting the idea that today is going to suck.
Class continues per usual, Mr. Jordan going on about whatever the hell he is talking about, normally you’d be paying attention, eating up every bit of knowledge that comes from his mouth, but you find yourself zoning out, staring down at your hands and just letting the world continue without you, until Angie nudges you with wide eyes, nodding toward the front of the class.
“Please bring your brain back to Earth, Ms. Y/L/N. Also if I could have you and Mr. Hargrove speak with me after class, I have some things to discuss.” Mr Jordan says with that normal sour-look on his face.
“Yes, Mr. Jordan. My apologies.” You nod, tucking your hands under the desk and tuning into what he is saying, despite the fact that it’s just going through one ear and out the other.
When the bell rings you hang back, slowly gathering your things and standing up to walk to Mr. Jordan’s desk in the front once everyone has filed out and to their next class. Billy slowly swaggers over, a look of disinterest on his face and a subtle glare at you before Mr. Jordan speaks.
“I received your final project while the two of you were out suspended. You had another week to work on it are you sure you are ready for it to be graded?” He asks.
“Yes sir, we worked hard on the project while we were out and I made sure to triple-check it before turning it in.” You nod, refusing to look at Billy as you hold your books close.
“Okay, I just wanted to make sure I spoke with you and give you the opportunity before moving forward. Another thing I wanted to mention is the fact that the two of you were suspended and now you are at school, make sure your brains are on the work and not each other.”
“Sir, I know I was a little distracted today, but it has nothing to do with Mr. Hargrove.” You defend yourself, but Billy stays quiet.
“Please, Ms. Y/L/N, I am not a fool.” He shakes his head and nods to the door. “The two of you received a 96% on the project. Now I will see you both here and mentally ready for class tomorrow.”
“Absolutely, thank you!” You smile wide and turn, exiting the class.
“Absolutely, thank you.” Billy mocks after the two of you make it into the hallway. “Why are you avoiding me Y/L/N?”
“Oh no stupid nickname? Why the hell have you been avoiding me, Hargrove?” You whip around, eyebrows furrowed and jaw set.
“What gives you that idea?” He chuckles, leaning against some lockers.
“Oh I don’t know, maybe playing drag race on our street every time you see me. Can’t get away from me quick enough? It doesn’t matter anyway, we have no reason that we need to associate with each other anymore so don’t worry about it.” You go to turn around but he catches you by the arm.
“What are you doing Wednesday?” He asks in a low, sultry voice.
“Besides school, I have plans and you aren’t part of it. The only reason I talked to you that day in the first place was because Max asked me to. I was civil with you because we had a project together-”
“Is that what you call making out and wearing my clothes?” He cuts you off.
“I have no desire to speak with you about this anymore or at all. So fuck completely off.” You turn around so quickly you’re surprised that you didn’t give yourself whiplash and march over to Angie who is waiting at your locker, eyes wide.
“Well shit.” She says astonished.
“Tell Davey I’m excited to see him again.” You shove your books in your locker and slam it closed before walking to your next class.

On TLC, an anon who was at the show posted this:
So I was in the London crowd tonight and had a pretty good view of both Tessa and Janelle. What a night! Really didn’t expect this. Tessa seemed to stand on top of a step or something so she was pretty visible. Nate was maybe 4 meters away from her by the mixing booth. A couple of things I noticed:
Tessa did not look at the screen when the audience cheered for her video clip appearance during PYNK. She kept looking away during moments like this throughout the evening. A couple of people took selfies with her so she must have been aware of people watching. She laughed a lot during I Got the Juice, particularly when Janelle told the crowd: ‘If I point at you - you will come on stage and you will dance!’ …
Tessa seemed to giggle and repeated Janelle’s pointing motion followed by a simulated lasso into Janelle’s direction. She was on the phone throughout the rhythm dance intro in the beginning of Make me Feel… We all know what happened next - she must have gone live soon after
There were a couple of moments where she was flat out beaming.
Tessa was laughing really hard when Janelle did the microphone dildo pose…
Note how Janelle snuck in an 'I see you baby’ at the end… Not sure if she meant the crowd or someone particular there
Tessa was watching the whole thing with her bright, beaming smile - that was definitely one of those moments when you could see that they have a connection. It was a great thing to see the two across from each other.
I remember watching Tessa’s reaction to the 'If I’m gonna sin it’s with you line’ and she was definitely singing / speaking along with the lyrics… and then Janelle inserted 'London’."

Behind 'Black Panther': The hidden meanings of those stunning Wakanda costumes
Tumblr media

Oscar-nominated designer Ruth Carter takes us on a guided tour of her exquisite fashions and explains their authentic African origins.
Even before Black Panther premiered in theaters, costume designer Ruth Carter saw her Instagram feed blowing up with fans emulating the film’s style. That’s unlikely to change anytime soon. Director Ryan Coogler’s record-breaking film is easily the best-looking Marvel movie to date, in large part because of Carter’s dazzling vision of fashion in Wakanda. Carter’s prestigious résumé includes Oscar-nominated designs for Malcolm X and Amistad, along with costumes for beloved films like Selma, Serenity, and Love & Basketball. But Black Panther presented a unique challenge: creating the look of an African society that was both untouched by Western influences and more technologically advanced than any nation in the world. As Carter told Yahoo Entertainment, she turned to ancient African tribal designs for her inspiration, then remixed those elements to create a futuristic, cutting-edge fashion aesthetic that, not incidentally, makes everyone in the movie look fabulous. It’s no wonder the film is already showing its influence on the fashion world. Carter spoke to Yahoo about creating the film’s many distinct tribal looks, her source for the royal family’s stunning jewelry, the inspiration behind Michael B. Jordan’s sexy Killmonger street look, and the secret superhero element she worked into Letitia Wright’s Shuri wardrobe.
Yahoo Entertainment: The concept of Wakanda as an African nation that was never colonized by the Dutch or British is so powerful. How did that inform your design choices? Ruth Carter: I discovered so many things about Africa that I didn’t know — like, the cloth that we normally see in many African-inspired things, the wax cloth, was brought in from the Dutch. There are influences of the British; when you see a Nigerian wedding, you’ll see a Nigerian traditional drape and a guy with a top hat on. [laughs] So you have to dig deeper and go to the indigenous tribes of Africa. You’re not a real historian, you’re just kind of the temporary historian for the picture, so you’re looking at beadwork and you’re looking at carvings and you’re looking at masks. And you’re being inspired by patterns. There are a couple of patterns that I saw repeated throughout the continent: one is like a checkerboard, another one is a triangle.
And I looked at books on African ceremonies, since ceremonies reminded me of pre-colonization. So for example, the Dogon tribe were the first astronomers. They do a ceremony once a year where they adorn themselves in these brilliant raffia skirts and wood-carving masks that shoot up to the stars — they’re really tall. And they do these moves that sweep the earth. I was fascinated by that. So Ryan wanted the Jabari to wear grass skirts during battle, and the Dogon was the perfect place to start with the inspiration. We used the wood carving design for the armor for the Jabari. So when we see Winston Duke (as M’Baku), he really is representing the Dogon tribe of ancient Africa.
Tumblr media
Winston Duke as M’Baku (Photo: Marvel Studios)
And then the Dora Milaje were inspired by many indigenous tribes of Africa. The color was the brilliant red of the Maasai. When you see these pictures of them with their beadwork, you see this red that is just so prominent and so strong, and really beautiful with these bald heads, and they stack beads, and it’s just phenomenal. So I upped the color of the design to be a much more brilliant red so they could have this part of Africa that was undeniable in its brilliance and in its color. Also their neck rings were inspired by the Ndbele tribe of South Africa. Ryan really wanted to use them, and it was his idea to have these neck rings and these arm bands to represent this form of adornment that we see throughout Africa. Using them as armor just felt very natural. But Ryan also said he wanted them to feel like jewelry, especially Danai [Gurira]’s. When you see Danai in the opening scene in Nigeria and she impales the guy behind her and she walks straight [towards the camera] — you see this gold just glimmering, and it’s very regal.
Tumblr media
Okoye (Danai Gurira, left) with the Dora Milaje (Photo: Marvel Studios)
So those are kinds of ways that the costumes represented the ancient indigenous tribes of Africa. And I used so many books — I think everybody loves African art, I don’t know anybody who doesn’t, but we didn’t want to approach it from an anthropological point of view. Like the man with the lip plate. You see him with this lip plate, and you mostly see that in National Geographic, on a woman who’s bare-chested in her village, you know, cooking outside on a fire. But this way we honored it, and we made it classy and regal, and we gave the actor a beautiful suit to wear that represented the tribe, and we painted the lip plate to match the color of the suits, and we made it an outfit. So in those ways we gave it honor.

Can you talk about how you used fashion to express the cultures and beliefs of the different tribes of Wakanda: the Border Tribe, the Panther Tribe, the River Tribe, the Mining Tribe, the Merchant Tribe, and the Jabari?   There was a color theory that Ryan set out. It was pretty basic: he wanted the River Tribe to be green, the royal palace is purple, the Border Tribe is blue — they represent the police, they patrol the border of Wakanda — and the Merchant Tribe is this aubergine with lots of metal.

So I just took it from there. And once I divided my research by the different tribes of Africa — the Merchant Tribe representing the Tuareg, the River Tribe representing the Surma and the Kongo, the Mining Tribe representing the Himba — I was able to apply it.
Tumblr media
The Mining Tribe (Photo: Marvel Studios)
And I wanted to apply the art of the tribes to their costumes. For example, silver is a precious metal for the Tuareg, and that fit within the Wakandan ideology of vibranium, because vibranium is also silver. So I combined the silver from the Tuareg look with that aubergine-baby blue kind of mixture for the Merchant Tribe of Wakanda.
The same goes for the River Tribe. The cowry shell was a form of commerce [in West Africa], it was how they traded. And so I used a lot of the cowry shell on Lupita’s costume, and a lot of beads and shells because she represented the river and the water and the grass. So I had a wealth of resources of artistry to pick from.

You mentioned metal, which reminded me how amazing the jewelry is. Were those all custom pieces? Ramonda’s earrings are bought from this man in Atlanta, and I’ve been looking for his name since then. He came into my shop, this old guy chewing on a licorice root.
Tumblr media

He had everything rolled up in a black cloth, and he unrolled it, and then there those earrings were! And I just bought some things from him. But much of the jewelry was handcrafted by Douriean [Fletcher], who I hired — she’s a jewelry designer who I met and I really liked her aesthetic, I liked her work ethic, and I felt that the jewelry of Wakanda needed to have this hand-tooled look that would also be reminiscent of the craftsmanship of Africa and of ancient Africa. So I started everything with a prototype that was made of metal, and then we molded it and were able to recreate the jewelry in rubber and paint it to look like metal.

I want to talk about a couple specific characters.  Wakandan princess Shuri (played by Letitia Wright) has such a distinctive fashion sense. What was your inspiration for her? When when we first meet Shuri, the tradition is uncomfortable for her — she says, “Can we get this over with? This corset is really tight.” So that informed the rest of the story. When we first meet her at the airstrip and she asks T’Challa if he froze — she’s the one who’s wearing the cape! She has a little cape on her costume. All of her costumes were inspired by fashion, were inspired by new technology. When we see her in her lab, I didn’t want to use a lab coat.
Tumblr media

I wanted to present these overlays — everything was overlaid, and I wanted the overlays to feel as if they were different recycled fabrics. So I chose carefully whether it was a mesh, or a sheer white kind of a sweatshirt-y feel. Also, I wanted her colors to be young and fresh, and her look to be that of, not a 15-year-old, not a preteen, but of a girl who’s going from teenage to womanhood.
Tumblr media
Chadwick Boseman and Letitia Wright (Photo: Marvel Studios)
I also want to talk about Erik Killmonger’s street look when he first see him in the museum, with the denim jacket. It’s such an unexpected look for a villain, sexy and geeky and cool.  In one of the first versions that we read, Killmonger was an anthropologist. And we thought, when you think of the stereotype of an anthropologist, you think of a tweed coat and slacks, like he’s coming from the university. And Ryan really wanted him to feel like he was basically urban, he was unapologetic about his look. He was learned, which is where the glasses come in, but we gave him drop-crotch pants, Balmain boots, a shearling denim jacket, and an oversized T-shirt.
Tumblr media
Michael B. Jordan and Killmonger and Andy Serkis as Klaue (Photo: Marvel Studios)
He’s also wearing some kind of African beads, so there’s a little bit of culture there. There are signs that he has a connection to his past but it’s not overt. He is representing the Lost Tribe, so we needed to make him really feel like an African-American urban cat, you know, an urban guy, and have the security surround him as if they don’t really know what to make of him — is he a thug? What is he? And so it just really plays him against T’Challa really great, because T’Challa comes from a place that’s never been colonized, he was raised a prince, and so his look is completely the opposite.
This movie is looking to be hugely influential in the fashion world. You’ve done so many iconic films; is that an experience you’ve had before, of seeing designs inspired by your films on the runway or in stores?  I have not had this experience before. I feel like we’ve got an opportunity here to have a voice and shape the world in a sense, and that’s where fashion comes in. If that’s what people want to buy, the fashion industry usually provides that. And if the Panther film has influenced people to want to wear these things — I see it on my Twitter feed all day long, I see it on my Instagram all day long. People are re-creating the fashions because they feel a connection to the story, they love the story so much, and so I feel like the H&Ms and all those people will have their Wakandan vibe in some of their clothes. And hopefully it won’t go out of style like most things in fashion sometimes do. Because it’s a movement more than a fashion statement.

best-ofs, 2017
putting in a break here, this is real long
best book I read: The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood
It seems trite to pick this in a year where every Tom, Dick, and Harry was comparing the Trump administration to Atwood’s novel and when Amazon was putting on a big-budget adaptation (which, for the record, I have not seen). The effect that this had on me, though, cannot be understated. Sad, wry, and all-too-familiar in places, this is a masterpiece that deserves to be up there with 1984 and the rest of the great nightmares.
honorable mention: The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, David Mitchell
I’m not much of a historical fiction person, but this masterfully wrought story of a Dutch clerk and a Japanese midwife in early-1800s Japan is well worth your time.
best comic: Batman, Volume 1: I Am Gotham, Tom King, Mikel Janin, et al.
King and his collaborators’ work on Batman since DC’s most recent relaunch seems to be on a trajectory to match or even surpass the Grant Morrison era in the pre-New 52 era, a reshuffling of the core cast that will pay huge dividends down the line (if DC actually makes a wise long-term decision for once, which, who knows). Despite his tendency to learn a little too hard on certain stylistic tics, I think King might be the best writer working in superhero comics today.
honorable mention: Detective Comics, Volume 1: Rise of the Batmen, James Tynion IV, Eddy Barrows, et al.
Yes, two Batman titles in one year is a bit of a cheat, but this is so fun that it’s hard to pick something else. Tynion turned up on a panel discussion on the great comics podcast Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men where he was introduced as the writer of “DC’s new X-Men title, Detective Comics”, which is exactly what this is - a team of misfits and outcasts cobbled together by a reticent, demanding mentor...who in this case is Batman. This is easy to miss out on with all the fireworks over King’s work, but give it a shot.
best comic (non-2017): MIND MGMT, Volume 2: The Futurist, Matt Kindt
Kindt’s work on the beginning of his psychic-X-Files saga MIND MGMT was good, but the second collection reveals it as a ship-in-a-bottle in the middle of a much weirder, wilder museum - there are few volume 2s that build on the success of the first as much as this one does.
honorable mention: BPRD, Volume 3: Plague of Frogs, Mike Mignola, Guy Davis, et al.
The first few collections of this series, following Hellboy’s teammates after he quits the secret BPRD organization, kind of flounder, but Davis and Mignola really hit their stride here with this sequel to an earlier Hellboy story that grows into a hybridization of Mignola’s earlier work and a Stephen King novel.
best movie: Blade Runner 2049
This also feels like kind of a cheat given my love for the original, but there was simply no other movie that had my gears turning after I walked out of the theater like this one did. The plot elements of this, of course, have been speculated on endlessly since Ridley Scott released the Final Cut of the original film, but My Guy Dennis Villeneuve manages to introduce enough new elements and uncertainty in the mix to keep you guessing - I found myself continually questioning what I really knew about anything that had happened or was happening. It was always going to be impossible to make a movie as good as Blade Runner, but Villeneuve came closer than anyone could dare.
honorable mention: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
I have my misgivings about the Finn and Poe portions of this, which feel like they mishandled the two more than a little, but the Rey/Luke Skywalker storyline is, as a whole, a barn-burner, building on both Rey and Luke’s characters in extremely satisfying ways. It was easy to imagine where they might go from Rey and Luke on the island at the end of The Force Awakens, but I don’t know if I imagined they’d go here, which is what makes this so great.
best album: I See You, The xx
I gave this a pretty casual listen on Spotify when it came out as I was kind of a marginal xx fan - I enjoyed their first album but didn’t really care for Coexist. I was totally blown away and listened to it all the way through several times (this is something I rarely, if ever, do with big pop/pop-ish releases). Virtually every track on here except for the extremely forgettable closer is perfectly performed and produced, from the playful, somewhat taunting “Dangerous” to the self-doubt-as-anthem “On Hold”. Should go down as their best album to date.
honorable mentions: Piety of Ashes, The Flashbulb / Sleep Well, Beast, The National
I couldn’t decide between these two, so here’s a twofer for you. Benn Jordan’s style as The Flashbulb has shifted along a spectrum of sweet spots between acoustic music and electronic music, and he seems to have somehow found the sweetest one yet in Piety of Ashes, which alternates between intimate material you might have expected on Arboreal or Love as a Dark Hallway (”Starlight”, “Goodbye Bastion”) and big, broad electronic pieces that feel like Jordan uncovered something he could always do that was just off-camera (”Hypothesis”, “As Water”).
When I first heard Sleep Well, Beast my comment to a coworker was “I only like some of it now, but I think I’ll like it more as time goes on”. This was a rare example of me actually showing some predictive ability, because this has really grown on me with time (maybe its intent as commentary on life in the Trump world as something to do with this). Highlights are the sad, sweet “Nobody Else Will Be There”, also-sad-and-sweet, but in a different way “Carin at the Liquor Store”, and the driving dark heart of the entire thing, “The System Only Dreams In Total Darkness”, which has been a constant play for me this fall/winter.
best TV show: Twin Peaks/Twin Peaks: The Return
A triumph for David Lynch and Mark Frost in every sense of the word. The era of “prestige TV” feels like a cheap trick by HBO, AMC, et al. to get us to watch the same old stuff with a slightly higher budget after 18 hours(!!!!!) in, around, and beyond (and I mean beyond) Lynch’s little town in the Pacific Northwest. Kyle MacLachlan deserves about 400 awards for his triple (quadruple?) role here.
honorable mention: Mr. Robot
I think Sam Esmail failed to stick the landing again (I wasn’t a fan of season 2), but the earlier parts of this season are maybe the highest highs the show has ever hit - Elliott and Mr. Robot fighting over his body in the bowels of the ECorp fortress from the end of season 2, Darlene struggling to extricate herself from the FBI, and the terrifying-yet-awe-inspiring scene of Angela laying out her plans to Mr. Robot as New York comes back to life at the end of the first episode. This isn’t always the best show, but boy, can it ever be good.
best video game: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
This is to video games as Lynch’s third season of Twin Peaks was to television: a throwing of the gauntlet to every competitor to dare and match this. Where other games would put physics puzzles in their own little sandboxes, BOTW applies its physics to just about everything and lets you see how far your tools can take you. Where other games would put everything on the map in perfectly zoomable, filterable control for you, BOTW challenges you to build the map yourself and actually get out there and explore. I’ve gone back to this in the harder Master Mode with the release of the last DLC, and there’s still nothing that can touch this. This is destined to be a touchstone for decades to come.
honorable mentions: The Talos Principle/Batman: The Telltale Series
The Talos Principle is everything I wanted The Witness to be that The Witness wasn’t: thoughtful without being heavy, clever without being impossible (well, mostly not impossible, there are a few of those puzzles I don’t think I could have cracked on my own). The writing is sharp as a tack, featuring a variety of philosophical discussions between your character and a whip-smart AI. A really excellent puzzler.
Batman: The Telltale Series marks yet another appearance of the Batman on this list, but what an appearance! Telltale throws out several sacred cows of the Batman behemoth, but instead of making something malformed and uninteresting, it feels like the freshest Batman has been in ages. I eagerly await every new episode of this, because I never know where they will go next.
best podcast: Important If True
This is yet another “feels like I cheated” entry, but the Idle Thumbs guys’ work on Important If True deserves to be recognized. They could have simply recycled the Robot News segments from Idle Thumbs for this, but instead they went for something much wilder, taking people’s advice on what wishes to ask for from a genie, going through breakdown procedures for old Chuck E. Cheese competitor restaurants, and speculating on a Jessica Fletcher vs. Jaws matchup (as in the shark). The most wildly funny podcast going now. Recommended episodes: “Fight Garbage With Garbage”, “Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins”, “A Wish Upon a Star”
honorable mention: Waypoint Radio
With the Idle Thumbs guys winding down to a monthly schedule (sorta), Vice’s Waypoint staff’s podcast has readily stepped into the hole left behind by the Thumbs for regular doses of industry coverage. It’s great to see Danielle Riendeau and Rob Zacny getting more exposure outside of the Thumbs ecosystem, and Austin Walker, Patrick Klepek, and Danika Harrod are this sort of perfect perpetual motion machine at the heart of everything. Recommended episodes: “The Orange Casket”, “R.I.P. A.I.M.”, “Someone Explain To Me The Alien Alloys Before I F'ing Explode”

Tumblr media
via 75 Books for the Next Four Years)
In the last weeks as I’ve found myself rereading George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel 1984, a work I never took to in high school yet felt even then, all the same, that the context of how the work was being taught had eluded the experiment of my sophomore English class. Orwell’s gray fantasia had been reduced to a Cold War allegory (if even that) about the joys and necessities of unlimited self-expression. In short, what happened in the world before or outside America in the late 1990s. This time round, more than 15 years later, after three presidents and two imperialist wars and so very much else, Orwell’s text strikes me less as science fiction or totalitarian parable. It describes a world I know, today, intimately. It renders the temperature of our corporatized media and the destabilizing rhetoric of the incoming administration under President-elect Trump.
On page 101, Winston wanders into a shop in the prole district forbidden to all Party members such as himself, in part to revisit the scene of his great crime some 50 pages earlier where he purchased a blank diary with the intent of recording language freed from the trappings of ubiquitous Newspeak. Orwell writes:
There was a small bookcase in the other corner, and Winston had already gravitated towards it. It contained nothing but rubbish. The hunting-down and destruction of books had been done with the same thoroughness in the prole quarters as everywhere else. It was very unlikely that there existed anywhere in Oceania a copy of a book printed before 1960.
This ever-eerie image of the destruction of knowledge compresses and resonances with so much of imperialist, colonialist, genocidal and fascist history: The book burning by the Nazis in May 1933 and then even further back to the criminalization of literacy for African slaves and indigenous peoples in colonial America. As Paula Gunn Allen reminds us: “The root of oppression is the loss of memory.”
Today’s inauguration signals the emboldened resurgence of fascism and white supremacy under the banner of global populism. I am chilled by yesterday’s news of how the Trump administration plans to completely gut and cut the National Endowment for the Arts as well as the National Endowment for the Humanities. In response, I asked a few dozens writers over text and email to respond to the following question.
“What book is necessary reading in the face of today’s inauguration?”
I am thankful for their generosity and fortitude, hopeful for the renewed commitment to staying informed as well as informing others. Perhaps such a task is the principle service upon which all of teaching, literature, the arts—not to mention our democracy and civil rights—relies. May we take root in these voices and texts, may we honor their differences, end the persistence of the distinct oppressions they point to and are drawn from, be ever vigilant to preserve the rites of their memories.

Ça l’a visiblement tué.
Michael B. Jordan (Erik Killmonger)
Martin Freeman (Everett K. Ross)
