Thoughts on “Essex Serpent”

So, first of all, I’m very glad I read the book before watching the series. 

Second of all, Tom Hiddleston in a sweater makes my heart happy. 

After watching the first episode:

The variences from the source material are...interesting. And in some cases seem to me to change the whole timbre of the story. Not sure if that’s good bad or indifferent yet. 

Spencer being not a pure-bred upper class man kind of undermines his whole characterization to me? Like, the whole point of his character is that he is the opposite of Luke Garrett. Spencer is a mediocre student, a mediocre surgeon, but he comes from All the Money, with All the Breeding, and all the power that comes with it behind him. He’s able to cover for Garrett because he has everything Garrett lacks. 

The introduction of the hyperreligious/superstitious/anglocatholic curate is interesting. I’m not sure he adds anything, frankly, other than a slightly more obvious foil to Will? I don’t feel he needed a foil in that direction, but its a choice I suppose. 

Nit picks from a liturgical pedant. 

“Abide with me” is an interesting choice. It is traditionally sung at funerals, but also during times of distress. I’m not sure it’s one that Will would have chosen

Given that Easter was April 2, 1893, there were not that many weeks in winter that the liturgical colors would have been green. Given the timeline in the novel, Will’s stole should defintely have been purple for Lent.  Having Will cross himself after finding Gracie defintely runs contrary to his Reformed characterization in the book. 

The book explicitly mentions him having removed the ornate cross from the altar.

Possibly my last Christmas

CW: religion, racism, lgbt bigotry

I’m not dying or anything haha, but I’m considering moving from Catholicism to Anglo-Catholicism or Islam. I’m beginning to start the process of learning more about Islam. From there, I may convert or move to being an Anglo-Catholic, but I haven’t been satisfied with the Catholic Church in the US getting in bed with fascism more and more. Over the past two years being a Catholic, I’ve experienced increasing racial bigotry at the hands of fellow parishioners, especially in TradCath spaces, whose liturgy and rituals themselves have fed me well up until COVID.

Since that last experience at mass a year ago, I’ve come to the realization that perhaps this isn’t a space for me anymore, nor can I comfortably commune with these people. In addition, I’m beginning to feel complicit in the systematic bigotry of my LGB and definitely T siblings. Furthermore, seeing how some bishops and priests denounce BLM and non-stop conservative propaganda on EWTN have solidified that the Catholic Church may not be for me in any form. I thought I could work around the conservativeness and rigidity as a Queer, Black leftist. However, I don’t have the energy anymore to forge that space that keeps getting destroyed.

To my liberal Catholic mutuals, I love y’all. I will continue to root for you keeping up the good fight, and I hope we can remain mutuals after this. This isn’t a referendum on the faith, but the religion that has even turned on its own pope in some instances. This advent I’ll take in the spirit of the holidays, and maybe go to a midnight mass. However, past this point it will not be as a practicing Catholic.
