Anna leaned forward and tweaked the frame a little, straightening it up, and then stepped back to look at it.
‘That looks nice,’ John said, coming to stand behind her.
She leaned back against him, his arm coming up around her waist as he rested his chin on the top of her head.
‘Do you recognise this?’
‘Should I?’
She shrugged, suddenly feeling a little bashful. ‘There’s no reason you should, I suppose.’
He looked again at the item in the frame, sensing she was disappointed with his answer. It still meant nothing to him. He jiggled her gently.
‘Tell me. If it’s important to you, I want to know why.’
‘Do you remember the night of the fair in 1913?’
He cast his mind back. ‘You were ill.’
‘You brought me a tray of food. And a flower.’
John stared at the pressed flower framed on the wall of their cottage and felt a rush of love for his wife.
‘I did,’ he said, softly. ‘You kept it.’
‘Yes. It was the first flower anyone had ever given me.’
He tightened his arm around her, felt her small, strong hands on his, her fingers touching his precious wedding ring.
‘And it was you giving it to me,’ she murmured. ‘It made me so happy, I thought I might die.’
‘Did it?’
‘Yes. I was already so in love with you, but I never thought I could even hope you’d feel the same. Not until that night when you brought me bread and soup. And a flower.’
He nuzzled her temple, pressing a tender kiss there, filled with love for this wife of his, who seemed so oblivious even now to her own charms.
‘Oh, Anna, believe me, it was I who thought you were beyond my reach back then. You were too young and good and beautiful for the likes of me,’ he said, honestly.
She smiled, huffing out a tiny laugh. ‘Oh, yes? But I’m not now?’
‘No, you’re still too young and good and beautiful for me, but it turns out that, all evidence to the contrary, I am the luckiest man in the world because you agreed to become my wife.’
Anna leaned back against him. ‘I would probably have agreed to marry you that night if you’d asked me.’
‘Perhaps I should have.’
‘Perhaps you should,’ Anna agreed, happy and content with her beloved husband.
