just finished in memoriam by alice winn and. I don’t think it was very good

#the way I KNEW she was going to be a public school kid when I got to acknowledgments #whole thing was like an ode to old boarding schools #and idk it felt kind of. bad. to have a WW1 novel that focused p much exclusively on the losses of the upper classes #when it was the lower classes who were generally thrown in the line of fire #like you wouldn’t know from reading this book #also the ‘hallo’ and ‘old chap’ shtick really grated after a while it was too much to the point of parody #the pacing of the central relationship also felt off like it reaches crescendo in the first 100 pages and then everything peters out #and finally it’s yet another Great Gay Novel w the vibes of someone weaned on fic…. it’s giving a little life #two stars???

nobody asked for this but here are some queer theory thoughts inspired by a tik tok

“queer” is not a synonym for “gay”

it is not defined by what you do experience (ie same sex attraction) but by what you do NOT experience— the ability to occupy cisheteronormative spaces

“queer” encompasses anyone who is unable to occupy these spaces. anyone who experiences alienation from the experiences and expectations of cisgender and/or heterosexual people

this is why this word is so wonderful and so useful. rather than asking yourself “do i feel an experience that places me in a label that is define by having a certain experience”, it asks “do i NOT feel like i can exist authentically in the gender binary and/or in heterosexual relationships and life pathways”

for me, it was much easier to identify the fact that i don’t experience straightness than it was to identify that i experience asexuality. that more specific label came with time, education, and reflection, but what my body and my soul always knew from elementary school onward was that i am alienated from the experiences of heterosexual people around me. 

i didn’t always know i was asexual. in many ways, even though i lacked the word, i always knew i was queer. 

#thinking about the normalization of the word queer #which is overwhelmingly good #but normalization also leads to the loss of nuanced understanding of its precise meaning #as people with less education about the queer community become familiar with the word #so many cis straight people don't understand this concept and view queer as another word for gay #but it is so much richer and broader #also obligatory disclaimer that using labels that do describe experiences #like lesbian gay bi ace etc #is not bad obviously #but we should also have the understanding that umbrella terms contain immense power #because of the fact that they encompass so much #and we should embrace that broadness rather than requiring specificity from people
