It’s really weird from a story telling perspective to have a side character (Bakugou) to be the one to defeat the guy who was supposed to be the main villain (All for One) instead of the main character (Midoriya) who’s entire quirk and training revolves around defeating him. Bakugou has no business with One for All and has shown to hold no respect or sympathy for the past users and yet he is the one to defeat him while Midoriya is off to the side fighting Shigaraki. It’s like Hori is trying to retcon and make Bakugou the main character

I'm glad I dropped BNHA when I did, because if I had to read about Nana being blamed for her son, Kotaro, abusing his family, I would've lost my shit.

I've been seeing the "endeavor is the best written character in BNHA" take for a while and regardless of if that's true or not (because that's an opinion, not a fact) do the people saying this not think it's questionable or off-putting that the "best" written character is a middle aged man discovering after over two decades that neglecting, abusing, and overall traumatizing his wife and children is BAD and he wants to be a better person now???

i feel like this last day or so confirmed for me once and for all that bnha don’t care about the writing in bnha. the entire appeal, the entire reason why people care about it IS the characters.
i’ve never been in a fandom before where most people in the fandom don’t know what’s going on in the extremely simple story. most of my friends didn’t/don’t know what’s going on in the manga, or heck even the show. but they’re still technically a part of the fandom and care about it. that’s because they fell in love with the characters. horikoshi cannot write to save his life, but what he can do better than anyone in the entertainment biz is create characters.
he created these, enjoyable, lovable guys that are peak character design, pretty much most of the time, and no matter how minuscule, people will be interested.
people will make ocs out of background characters (me), people will make daily accounts for little guys that showed up for two chapters (also me), and people will make an endless amount of head canons, aus, fanart, and fanfics about a character, despite not giving a crap about the actual story (me, me, me, me).
and it’s a great skill to have, but ideally if you have that many characters you wanna pair them with really good, well paced writing. and yet, bnha fails at that on every level.
bnha fans don’t care about how good the writing involved in bakugo’s return is, they don’t care about how damn stupid that entire plotline was, they care that bakugo’s back.
and while i understand their joy, calling everyone who’s saying it’s bad writing “stupid bakugo/bakudeku haters” is so fucking annoying and it reminds me of the fact that i hate this fandom.
i can go on and on and i probably will one day, but tldr:
bnha fans don’t care about the story because the characters are so interesting (in theory, in practice it’s a different story)

Can't wait for My Hero Academia to end so I can make the five hour video essay called 'So BNHA Was Actually Garbage' where I dedicate an entire hour of it to the waste of ink that is Bakugou Katsuki.

I have expressed previously that I have an odd relationship with BNHA, which included hate watching most of it. It has its moments, but there's really not that many. It's also. Y'know. Rampantly sexist.
I picked up One Piece maybe midway through my watching via the manga (I was warned of the anime's terrible pacing) and just. Wow. I was hooked from the start. I read through the first 4 volumes day one. I fell in love with these dorks immediately.
Oda's style might not sit with everyone but. Holy shit. Holy fucking shit. His backgrounds and shading are phenomenal.
I don't normally get that attached to a cast of characters or a story. I don't usually cry with media. One Piece has, as of current, made me cry around I'm gonna say 8 times. It's also made me burst out laughing or start (quietly) cheering many, many more times. The writing is top notch, the characters are so fucking good, the story and foreshadowing are just. Woah. I'm not going to be okay when I finish it. I'm already 40% of the way there.
Anyways closing thoughts despite everything I can't help but unabashedly love Luffy. I feel like I should hate him and despise him and want to grind him up with my teeth for being so stupid and silly and optimistic but. I don't. I love him for all those reasons. He's peak silly little guy, and while I'm only just starting Enies Lobby, there's also definitely more to him than that. He's silly and optimistic and incredibly dumb, but there's definitely a lot of emotional intelligence under the surface.
Anyways that's my mini One Piece rant because I am mentally plagued by it it's so good

I think that at this point I can safely say that Bakugou is an abuser and that he will never be able to make up for what he did because Horikoshi is going to continue making slapstick humor of Izuku and Bakugou relationship because there is nothing more fun than the abuser being violent with his victim after years of abusing them. Like the only reason because we don't have more of these "jokes" is because they're are in a war and Bakugou is dead for the moment.

the struggle of reading bnha right now as somebody who just doesn’t care about the villains... the narrative assumes i do, and is trying to tug on my heart strings or whatever, given all the focus on dabi and toga, but it doesn’t interest meeeee
i’ve never particularly liked the villains. they’re just very stereotypical villains man, what’s there that’s interesting? i can’t think of one character trait for any of them that surprised me by not being what i expected.

@lacunammmm asked me to make this so i'll explain what was good, what was bad, and overall how mha ended up becoming so awful.
The GOOD: i LOVVVEEE the themes of determination, discrimination, and friendship that izuku learns over the series. Mha also USED to have some pretty good themes of abuse/abuse recovery until a certsin point. And finally the arcs were Exciting! Tense, action packed, and outright METAL up until the lame gentle fight and izuku becoming op for no reason.
The BAD: The fanservice, sexism, bakugo ends up taking over the manga for no reason, enji gets redeemed for no reason, izuku gets all 8 ofa quirks with no warning for no reason, and finally the war arc happens for no reason.
And the WORST part was that it came after the banger villain academia arc. A tale of oppression, mental trauma, and how to cope with negative emotions to better yourself spends the entire arc getting you to root for the "bad guys" just for them to be punished in the next one.
War arc is cool up until the point they kill twice THEN hawks gets nothing for doing so THEN izuku goes rogue JUST because GRAN TORINO OF ALL PEOPLE died THEN he hears nagant tell him that heroes payed her to kill people for no reason and he legit has no reaction other than "heroes are good so that's good even if it's bad" THEN izuku proceeds to hypocritically sell out aoyama to be tied up like an animal even tho HE WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED if he didn't tell AFO about their plans and he's JUST a kid!!!
That's not even counting that they killed magne--a lady i wanted to see more of--just so overhaul could live and possibly be redeemed as foreshadowed in the nagant arc. They turned my other fav eri into a plot device that will also forgive her abuser. And worst of all they rrewrote the todoroki abuse so enji can be redeemed and dabi can look like an unreasonable "maniac" that needs to be killed or whatever bs hero society wants for thr villains--who they make/rely on to look good lol

So apparently Bakugou is supposed to be the “Symbol of Victory” but i’m struggling to remember a time when he won a fight against a villain. Like I might be completely wrong and just misremembering something but like, I don’t think he does. Most recently the fight AFO could be an example but from what i’ve seen he rewound himself till he no longer existed so it doesn’t really count. I pretty sure there was that thing in one of the movies but they aren’t canon. But i’m pretty sure in all the other fight against villains he either loses or has help so how is he the “Symbol of Victory” if he doesn’t have any real victories. Again this could just be me being dumb and misremembering things so if I am let me know.

why sports anime charas wouldn't immediately get folded by ppl from shounens
okay so obviously this isn't going to talk about people from REALLY REALLY op verses like fucking dragonball or bleach or one piece, because literally everyone gets folded by them except for ppl from their own worlds and the mcs from those shitty reincarnated time-traveling tower climbing bullshit manhwas. i will mainly be talking about my hero academia and black clover bc these are the two that i think are somewhat 'weaker' (relatively!! relatively!!!!) compared to other mangas and animes ive seen. also when im refering to shounen i mean like,, ones with powers. ALSO, and this is really important, I AM NOT SAYING THAT THE SPORTS CHARACTERS WOULD WIN. i'm just saying that they're stronger than they get credit for, especially since a lot of people who i see debating this stuff aren't athletes and don't really understand how sport affects you in other parts of your life (including but not limited to fights)
SO!! point 1!! i think this gets swept under the carpet a lot whenever ppl are debating who's better, but powers that work in a specific sport can be translated into something outside of that sport. take midorima from knb as an example: he can shoot really good 3-pointers. well, outside of basketball, that probably means that he would have: a, really good spatial awareness since he never loses the ball or bumps into someone while shooting, b, insane hand-eye coordination, and c, crazy accuracy whenever he throws stuff in general. that's all stuff that's pretty useful in a fight, ngl. honestly, this skillset is kinda better than half the ppl in class 1a. like, sure, they've got quirks, but take away their quirks and most of them are basically useless.
POINT TWO. if a character has a power like isagi's meta vision or kuroko's vanishing thing (idk if it has a name) it's not gonna go away as soon as they get in a fight. meta vision literally lets isagi predict the future. there is no reason why this ability wouldn't give him the upper hand in a fight with someone else. especially since it's not strictly confined to football. the only thing he needs is data, and he can get a lot of that from watching fights. honestly, meta vision is so broken that i just know if he was in bnha it would count as a quirk.
POINT THREE, specifically for people like kise ryouta and reo mikage. anyone who can copy other people will still be able to do it. like obviously they're not gonna be able to shoot fire or do a domain expansion or summon a stand or any of that shit, but they can still copy physical moves. so if they go watch 100 videos of ppl doing krav maga or some shit they'll be able to do it, which would make them pretty strong. considering how in bnha (sorry bnha fans ur anime is just the easiest to compare too) people with more mentally-focused quirks can become really strong just by relying on a weapon or learning some sort of fighting style. in black clover literally half the people get beaten up by some kid who has zero magic and a sword. like, what's stopping kise from grabbing a sword and slamming into some random ua kid's head?? it's not like they'd see it coming.
okay i know you're getting sick of me at this point but just hear me out
sports anime are only underrated in fights because people assume that every single person with powers immediately solos. like, normally they do, but a lot of the time it's not a zero diff fight, like come on. sure, zoro would kill hinata, but would yaomomo really beat reo mikage?? like are you sure?? are you only going off the fact that since she has powers she wins?? think about it for a second, please, i beg of you. powers =/= strong. thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Considering that the Final War arc started in Chapter 343 in February 2022, I understand why people’s interest in MHA is waning because this storyline has been going on for more than 2 years and 70 chapters.
Even if Horikoshi was a great writer, it wouldn’t have stopped people from losing interest and getting burned out on MHA because of how long it's taking for it to reach its conclusion, making this arc extremely drawn out and tedious to read.

It really upsets me that Izuku barely had any closure regarding him being a quirkless cause I found him way more interesting than him gaining one. He would've defended and understand Aoyama if it wasn't for the narrative putting all of Bakugo's actions under the rug.
Everything that happened with Izuku angsting about not being a hero because of him having no powers was a waste of time if Izuku was going to have one anyway. He was sympathetic before and would've been a good example that heroes doesn't need to have a flashy quirk to be one.
Because what makes a real hero is saving the people who needed help, it was never the power they had.
