jesus fucking christ where do i start. i hate kl*nce so much it has the cultural impact of nuclear waste.

kl*nce is the ship of keith/lance from voltron: legendary defender. if you werent on tumblr 2016-2018 i just cannot explain to you how the hellscape was. KL became sooo popular and i got the appeal at first but then they started treating everyone like shit like sending death threats and doxxing so i ended up shipping their rival ship which actually had more to back them up compared to their twink bland gayboy ship. the shippers just really ruined the show for everyone.

past the first season, KL had little to actually back them up romantically, and you could even argue that within s1 itself little really backed them up. however a good number of KLs were obsessed with KL being the promised queer rep and turned down any other proposed queer rep - if it wasnt KL, it's not rep. they made the most reachy meta posts and constantly inserted either keith or lance in the roles of shiro or allura, the two characters who actually mean the most to keith and lance respectively and called that canon. they also had a one-sided rivalry going on with lance insulting and bullying keith unprovoked because his fragile ego can't handle keith being better than him. KL's reach was huge and they constantly dominated tumblr's fandometrics for ships.

when i say aceshun/danshun is the "KL of bakugan" i mean it in the sense that they're both twink gay ships, have a one-sided rivalry where the loud, boisterous one attacks the quiet, more skilled one unprovoked, shippers constantly place one or the other in the roles other characters canonically fill to prove their ship and call it canon, and they have a fairly large following within the fandom. aceshun and danshun aren't as dominant as specgus and their fans will never reach the noteriety of KLs, but they do have a sizeable and sometimes incredibly annoying following considering the current size of the bakugan fandom.

Klance bloggers wondering why a part of the fandom considers shiro "old" at 25 like... Are you simply brand new to the fandom or straight up ignoring its history? Your fanbase did this. Your fanbase attacked and harassed anyone who threatened your otp by shipping shiro with keith, and what did they say to make it sound legit? That shipping sheith meant endorsing pedophilia and incest and power imbalance in relationships, eventually extending it to any shaladin ship... I've noticed something like that in the VLD fandom, Klance was the gay ship for young women (women of all sexualities but mostly straight women, because most people are straight ofc) but it was common to see women claiming to be gay men or "mlm" shipping Klance because they didn't want to be seen as "fujoshi". Also Klance fans would say stuff like "Sheith is the gay ship for straight people" even though more gay men seemed to ship Sheith. A lot of gay men don't have problems with age gap relationships because its hard to find other gay men to date so age gaps tend to become inevitable. I'm not a gay man (I'm a lesbian) but one of my best friends is a gay man and he saw the appeal of Jetko immediately, he doesn't understand Zukka at all. Fandom spaces have made people way too afraid of just being straight and they pretend they're other sexualities and genders.

tbh yah i get the feeling a lot of people equate straight with boring so they keep trying to insert themselves into lgbtq spaces where they don't belong so they can feel special. rlly annoying for those of us who are actually lgbtq. when are we going to accept that gay people are just... like... normal ass people. we are not a personality trait or a club

Re: Looking back on VLD fandom post Greatest serenity I ever got was entering the fandom late, and wandering around between ages 26-31, picking up the burned-out corpses of things to hold up in delight (yes, I am still here). Like: "Wow this is great art!" "Hun, that's the husk of a ship war icon. Thousands perished." "I know but lookit! Neat piece! I love this! OoOOoO look, another one! And a fanfiction! Amazing. I love Voltron." I am Too Old & Tired(TM) to do anything but skip cheerfully through the ashes of the apocalypse, and love the show with my whole heart. It's also lovely, watching people look back for themselves, to go, "Hmm, you know what? Nah, that was silly, people were silly. OOOO anOTHER ONE!!!"

it was pretty hard when it was still airing to be younger bc you were so susceptible to being influenced into hating so so hard on others over fictional things.

bullying people over liking those things and being so proud while doing it and claiming you're doing it because of morals..... it always rubbed me the wrong way. felt like christian puritanism reborn in the new generation.

i still think there's a big stigma (for good reason, some people were literally brutal back then) against the fandom, but for the most part i'm glad that a lot of people have matured and adopted the "don't like, don't engage" attitude that was so prominent in the early days of the internet. it truly was never that serious, to be doing all that.

zukka shippers are so totally obsessed with gender/sexuality headcanons and think sokka is the narrative foil to zuko lmao. sure, there are parallels between zuko and sokka but AANG is definitely the one who has the most parallels to zuko. aang and zuko are two sides of the same coin!

katara also parallels more with zuko than sokka does since katara and zuko are both the deuteragonists of the series to aang's protagonist. zuko and katara bond over the loss of their mothers and zuko chose katara to fight against azula since he sided with azula against katara in the crystal catacombs and now he was siding with katara against azula at the fire nation capital to fix his previous mistake.

plus zuko got a scar from azula's lightning from protecting katara just like aang got a scar from azula's lightning from protecting katara. then both of them were healed by katara! that's why the whole "zuko would have taken lightning for anyone" argument zukkas use doesn't work. of course zuko would have taken lightning for anyone but in the narrative it had to be katara for symbolic reasons.

i say this as someone who doesn't ship zukaang or zutara. it's just blatant in the series and dvd commentary points it out too.

zukka shippers have this distinctive viciousness and obnoxiousness to them. you can really tell that most of them got so upset by klance never happening that they latched onto atla when it got put on netflix. they treat zukka as klance in a different font. the irony is that keith and lance have far more interactions with each other than zuko and sokka do, and the two also mean more to each other. lance always admired keith's piloting skills and considered him his rival (the rivalry is imaginary in the tv series but it does exist in the comics) but then he later comes to trust him as their leader. keith thought lance was annoying but came to respect him as his right hand man (literally when forming voltion) and the two watched a sunset together lol.

i say this as someone who doesn't even ship klance. the ship is not terrible or anything but its fans are just so awful. klancers are like zukkas but at least the klancers have more content to go on. 💀
