I realize this is a weird question for a Sunday morning, but does anybody have particularly incisive articles about the tension between architectural preservation and the need (because I do think it's a need!) for new buildings, new spaces, and revising the landscape of a city?
I'm watching a piece on Richard Nickel, who is almost single-handedly responsible for photographing the work of Louis Sullivan and other architects of the Chicago Prairie School, prior to their demolition in the 60s. It's a great piece, and I love Nickel's photographs, but as someone who knows only the Chicago that sprang up in the wake of Nickel's, I can't help but wonder if there's more than simple aesthetics at play here.

“IGNITED FIRE”
★ Sypnosis  - Y/n S/n, an Architecture student and Bada Lee, a Performing Arts student shares an apartment at their university. They are doing great until Bada started bringing different girls at night forbidding Y/n to focus on her studies. Things went south when Bada stated her adoration towards Y/n. It all went downhill when one night ruined Y/n’s heart.
★ Warnings - suggestive??? bada making y/n a mess aaah
★ Bleu’s Note - waaaah i don't know what I'm doing here.. leave your thoughts below pleaseee. is this too short for a chapter or is it okay?
Read more. <3
Y/n started her day with productivity. She got up before the sun rises, fixed her personal bag and prepared an outfit so that she can finally start moving boxes to her shared apartment at her uni.
It was a new journey for her. She has never been away from her family for 22 years. She had to move to an apartment inside her uni because her father was moved to another state and changing uni would be more hassle.
She arrived at the apartment. It was humongous for a uni apartment. She wondered how much did her parents paid for her to have an apartment like this. She knocked at the door, expecting her roommate. However, she's not expecting to see a HOT roommate.. well..
She took a deep breath before stepping outside of their previous home. She's been here for all her life and now that she has to live alone, and do everything alone, she's scared. She didn't know what to do. All she can do is wish for her roommate to help her adjust in a life where she's all alone, without her parents.
The door swung open, revealing a tall woman in her sports bra and sweatpants. You looked at her, mouth wide open as you stood there, wonderstrucked.
“A-are you Bada? My r-roommate?” Why did i stutter, stupid Y/n! She then started getting conscious, she looked down at her feet.
“I am. You must be Y/n? You're prettier in person.” She muttered the last few words under her breath. “What?” Y/n wondered. Did she said something or am i just tripping?
Bada shook her head, and offered her hand out for a handshake. “I am Bada Lee, your apartment buddy.” Y/n was having second thoughts about bringing her hand out to shake Bada’s but at the end, for formality’s sake, she did shook the other girl’s hand. “M-my name is Y/n Choi. It's n-nice to meet you . . ” Why do i keep stuttering for heaven's sake. Y/n mentally cursed herself.
“You’re probably tired, let's go inside?” Bada offered. Y/n only nodded, not wanting to make another embarrassing scene infront of Bada. “Yes, of course but can you let go of my hand now . . ?” She looked down at their hands, and back to Bada’s face. The other girl chuckled as she released Y/n’s hand. “Sorry, your hand felt too comfortable to let go of.” Bada smiled at the girl before turning around to walk away, leaving Y/n startled.
What did she just say? Y/n thought, still can't believe what she heard. This girl is a flirtatious one. I can't believe she's hitting on me the first time we met. She continued to wonder and talk to herself not until it was snapped when Bada said something.
“Earth to Y/n.” She clapped her hands a few time to call the girl's attention. When Y/n finally came back to reality, she was met with a Bada leaning in the kitchen post, with her arms cross in all her glory for Y/n’s eyes to see. “Come here, Y/n. You should know a few things in our kitchen.”
She's 10x more hotter now. What the hell is happening to me? Y/n cried to herself, but walking slowly towards Bada. She knows how big of a failure she is in the kitchen given that the only thing she can cook are eggs.
“This is our fridge. It is spacious and has a partition in the middle. The left side is yours. You can store anything you want. You buy your own groceries and you clean your own mess.” She said, eyes fixed on Y/n leaving her once again, unable to speak.
Y/n only nodded, letting Bada know that she understands. “Use that mouth of yours. Use it for better purposes.” She deadpanned. “I u-understand Bada.” Y/n closed her eyes. Heavenly Father, I am not your strongest soldier. Y/n took a deep breath.
Bada replied with words that made Y/n’s breath hitched. “Good girl.” Bada smirks at Y/n’s reaction, loving every action and response Y/n delivers. The other girl however, has been so drained with Bada’s unrestrained flirting. “C-can i know where my room is? I-i wanted to rest already . .” She looked down, waiting for Bada to respond.
She felt the taller girl's presence before her and she closed her eyes, hoping Bada wouldn't notice the way her hands and lips are trembling. “Walk past the living room and you'll see a hallway.” Bada said. Y/n sighed in relief, only to be interrupted when Bada grabbed her chin, raising her head. “Don't be shy around me, Y/n. We're only on day one.” She smiles before patting Celene’s head and walking towards the living room where she flopped herself on the couch.
WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT FOR? Y/n didn't waste a second to run to her room and shut if close afterwards. It hasn't been an hour and she's already exhausted.
How am i going to face Bada everyday for the whole year??? Y/n let herself fall to bed the bed. Sighing and thinking if her choice of renting inside her uni is even a good idea.

So what I love about Old Louisville is how it is one of the most unique neighborhoods in the us. It is historic and gorgeous and yet definitively working class with amazing density, a great cultural scene, and stunning architecture. It even has shops, restaurants and the 1st co-op in Kentucky. If It had serious transit and a grocery store, it would be almost perfect

TOH Gallery Nucleus Info!
All right! The Gallery Nucleus livestream just ended, so here’s some info and trivia I found relevant!
When asked what they would’ve liked to see in S3 that they couldn’t fit in, JBO said “more dates”, while Cissy replied merely “Detention”. Sarah wanted to see the kids go to school, and Shawn Responts suggested one of the demon kids visisting the doctor, and us learning about demon physiology that way.
JBO continued his answer, saying he’d like to see the kids explore more via a road trip, with so many options; Maybe Maine where they’d be trapped in a lighthouse, or a haunted, mossy Charleston. The group joked about Hunter driving, or Vee disguised as an adult.
Sam Bosma would’ve liked to see them visit a comic con and see some Cosmic Frontier stuff, especially for Camila!
Cat Harman Mitchell suggested a grocery store; In exploring concepts for the Thanks to Them end credit illustrations, one idea was thrown out of Amity and Hunter looking suspiciously at a banana; Which, I guess that means the Demon Realm having bananas was retconned, Amity is also really sheltered, and/or Demon Bananas are much deadlier than human ones, hence Amity’s distrust. Gus and Willow would’ve been stoked by a bottle of mustard, which I find connects nicely to Gus’ ‘mustard ravioli’ recipe that he thought Camila loved!
Eden Riegel said she’d like to see King visit the human world and become a youtuber!
Amity’s witch outfit from the S3 montage was designed after Vivian from Paper Mario… Vivian is a trans girl, could this mean…?
The Duolingo homage initially looked too much like Garfield, so they had to change it.
In designing the Boiling Isles, they looked to Flemish and Dutch architecture, avoiding Gothic because it was too obvious and also complicated; Hieronymous Bosch paintings served as inspiration. The one thing that was too gross even for Dana was Latissa, AKA the Titan’s armpit, which initially had a lot more hair follicles.
It was confirmed that in designing the Boiling Isles, they had this idea of the Titan trying to regenerate, hence all of the fleshy masses, body parts, too many bones, etc.! Which can I say, as someone who guessed and analyzed all the way back in Season 1A… I CALLED IT!!!
JBO also mentioned that in early drafts, the show’s sixth episode (of S1) would’ve had Camila in the Demon Realm!
Likewise, he revealed that Belos wasn’t always Emperor; Originally, there was going to be an insect ruling family, with the current ruler being Emperor Pupa. However, they were stuck in their cocoon and had yet to emerge because of Belos, who claimed to be the only one who understood why the cocoon screamed; They changed the idea as it was too complicated and weird. VERY reminiscent of the Titan’s will, the implication he’s still alive and trying to regenerate, showing glyphs, not to mention the giant heart in the throne room…
Vee is around Luz’s age, at about 15-ish! All the kids would be entering Sophomore year, while Hunter is a Junior!
According to Rebecca, Dana said the timeskip was a few months, and the exact number didn’t matter, because in the end the characters would still act the same. Tbh, I respect that; Writing the main story and keeping in mind what matters, really does take precedence over the little details in the back imo.
Luz’s palisman egg is in her fanny pack!!! She took it with her into the Demon Realm!
In regards to the QnA, the first question asked that for writing a show like TOH, where everything comes full-circle, what was solidified?
JBO said that the main and only thing (and this can change!) is knowing exactly who the characters are. One of Dana’s great strengths is the cast, and having believable characters that you could know what they’d do in a situation. One thing that’s hard about TOH but helps make it what it is, is that the writers had to throw out a lot of stuff to get to what they felt was real and right. You go in with characters and think you know what they want and need, but that can change; It’s really about knowing what feels real. JBO also said that Dana had certain visuals/images she wanted for the ending of the show from the start!
When asked what surprised them for making it in, even if it was too gross; Andy Garner-Flexner brought up the magic shop the kids visited and all of the references, like the Ness shirt. They also put some Pokemon Team Aqua and Magma costumes in some boxes too! Fun fact, Andy’s husband asked him to hide a bunny for him in the background of S2 near the ending.
Surprisingly, some stuff would be gross or messed-up, and they’d make it even worse, only for the execs to love it; Like Flapjack’s death scene! Oof…
The crew had to avoid religious connotations for background books, so a D&D manual called “Advanced Sinning” was cut. Showing guts was fine, but no Donald Duck; Shawn wanted to put in a Donald Duck easter egg, for the implication he visited the Demon Realm or was even from it. Copyright was the hardest thing to get past execs in general… They tried to get Disney’s version of Hades on Luz’s wallpaper, but had to settle for the videogame instead. Cat can’t believe they got away with Hollow Mind and Lilith’s ice cream scene.
In regards to favorite fan theory? Sarah Nicole-Robles explained she didn’t know the plot in advance, so when she got the scripts for S2, she wondered if Hunter would be a homewrecker for Lumity, but was relieved and confirmed that no, he’s a SIBLING. Rebecca loved the Collector Luz theory, and JBO joked about the “Lego Eda” theory being right, their plans for a spin-off of her… Not to take it too seriously but this does remind me of my theory about the Collector turning everyone into toys…
In regards to a premise for a TOH spinoff, Sarah said she’d love an MTV cribs one-off of the Owl House, a tour of the rooms. Cat wanted a Lilith show about her historian adventures; Maybe a How I met your Mother style flashback show for the adults as teens, and how they got to the point they are now.
Andy wanted a Raeda prequel; JBO wanted to explore the deep past of the Demon Realm and the world beyond the isles. The characters would be unconnected to TOH’s on the surface; Different characters in a different part of the world. Rebecca joked about a Hooty spin-off.
In regards to the hardest character to work on; For JBO it was Belos… He was hard to write because he’s from so many different places and lived lots of lives in the Demon Realm, they had to ask does he have a set slang, a way he talks? Does he talk like a colonist? Likewise, Belos’ plans and motives are a secret for a good portion of the show, so it was tricky figuring out how much to reveal and when throughout the show.
Andy said that because he asked Dana, they changed the way they did glasses in side-profiles! This change can also be seen in Them’s the Breaks, Kid; Was he responsible for that too?
For Cat, one challenge was how short King was; They had to go for the shortcut of him riding on shoulders. This is because they’d want to do shots of characters, but not show their feet, but King was so short he’d be cut-off; So they went for the “Pikachu solution” to keep him in-frame.
When asked what their palismen would be, Sam Bosma said a penguin; Rebecca wanted a deer/elk, anything with antlers to stab with and use as a melee weapon in conjunction with magic. Andy went for a mole (which is also his fursona), JBO asked if anyone had a moth palisman? Shawn said he’d be a giant ground sloth, about the size of the Bat Queen, that he’d have to drag around.
Cissy went for a honey badger, since it could get stuff done; Be mean for her when she’s too nice. Sarah brought up a puppy, dragon, octopus (this last one reminds me of Thanks to Them!), Cat would be a puffball cat; The opposite of Ghost’s sleekness, just fuzz and eyes.
When asked what Hunter’s first day at Hexside would be like, JBO said that he’d simply “turf out”. Rebecca said he’d get eaten by a locker, as did Sarah; Rebecca explained Hunter would make the mistake of putting food into his locker, so the next time he opened it…
Cissy of course said detention. Cat said Hunter would get lost; Rebecca said Flapjack would have to help, and everyone cringed because y’know, JBO said that was too soon.
Someone asked how they approached fleshing out Camila through a dream sequence? JBO explained that from the start, they KNEW she was a good mom and wanted what was best for Luz, and not in a super wrong-headed way either. But at the start of the show, all we had was that she sent Luz to camp, so it was hard to reconcile this take with that action. It took a lot of thought, how did this happen? Everyone had their own experiences with their moms worked in.
In the end, the writers realized they’re all at that part of life where you realize your parent is their own person and doesn’t feel any older than anyone else. So when they looked at Camila as her own person and not just Luz’s mom, that helped them make their breakthrough on her character.
Andy brought up as another bit of Camila characterization was the background, and all of the queer community books she was reading; Not only does she support in one way, but she’s learning. And in regards to what Camila went through after Manny passed…
In the background, you can see signs of things being unfinished in the house; A lot of things incomplete, boxes not yet unpacked. It’s like a stand-still in time; Camila couldn’t keep going with some of these things. There were still boxes at the end of the hall with the family photos, it was half-painted. Given the short runtime, they really used the background and environmental storytelling to flesh out Camila this way.
When asked what coven they would be, Andy mentioned he thought of this answer in anticipation of that type of question, on his way to the event. He considered Oracle or Construction but decided on being a wild witch. Rebecca went for Abominations or Beastkeeping; JBO also wanted Abominations, so he could get to the bottom of what this thing is that he’s making, and talk to it; Is it bad to have it blown up every other second? Someone jokingly suggested what if Abominations were just Titan boogers.
Cat chose Illusions, Shawn opted for Potions and Oracle. Sam Bosma went for a smaller coven from Covention, like the Tiny Cat Coven. Sarah decided Bad Girl Coven was a cop-out answer, so considered Plant or Beastkeeping, ended up really feeling the former today. Lilith would be Emperor’s Coven; Just kidding, it’d be beast-keeping to keep all eight-legged friends far away. Eden chose Bard Coven.
When asked about the human outfits they liked, Bosma mentioned he loved the Cosmic Frontier ones; They always had the red and yellow in mind as a DS9 reference, but he still experimented with other colors.
At one point, Dana couldn’t decide between two Gus shirts; So she flipped a USB drive instead of a coin, and with that opted for his Dinosaur shirt! Cat said Hunter’s wolf shirt was a vibe; Andy mentioned they ‘tortured’ Matthieu Cousin by asking for more and more costume variations, until he said he needed a break for his wrist. Andy said Amity’s fits were good, Sarah concurred that Amity looked so hot and was killing it.
When asked if Flapjack ever tried flapjacks, Sarah said objectively yes. Rebecca figured he probably did; Andy suggested it was because of Camila, and Flapjack was told he was eating flapjacks too, but didn’t know if they were good.
(This led to a question among the group of whether palismen had taste buds, which they figured only Dana could answer. We know palismen hate the taste of goreberries, so the answer is yes!)
When asked what the characters’ zodiac signs would be… Dana prepped Rebecca with an answer ahead of time for this; She told Rebecca to tell them that Earth’s astrological calendar didn’t exist in the Demon Realm, they didn’t even have the same number of months. It’s a much more confusing system and they can’t answer that question; There’s thirteen months and 666 days, and the animals associated with each month are worms or other tube-shaped creatures.
(Andy did say he HC’ed Willow as a Virgo since he was one too and related to her. This isn’t canon however.)
When asked what anime the kids would like, Andy brought up My Hero Academia, Naruto, Yuyu Hakusho (which inspired his fashion choices). JBO said Gus would really get into a show about some dude addicted to gambling but also GREAT at it, always finding a way to pull it off; Like a mahjong anime.
In regards to their favorite creature/demon, it was the skin-eating fairy from the first episode for Cissy, whom Eden voiced! Cat said Hooty was a disgusting work, Rebecca liked the little version of the Owl Beast and had a plush on hand of it! For Andy, it was Titans. Bosma liked the detention guards, and…
Shawn said he liked the Bat Queen; And in their discussion, JBO revealed she wasn’t the Titan’s palisman (pointing out he was too big for her), she just belonged to a giant who lost her. Shawn liked her story of becoming a ruler after that incident.
And that’s it! Very illuminating stuff about production. Very sad to hear the Bat Queen’s backstory here, since it likely means we won’t have it addressed in S3, nor will the writers retcon her as the Titan’s to fit it into the remaining storyline. Thrilled about what we heard of the Titan’s regeneration and Belos’ original story concepts, especially since I WAS correct in likening him to a beetle in Season 1B, after all! Between this and Titan King, my earliest S1 theories have been getting vindicated, babey!

this surely has been written about but idk where
one of the big things software does at my grocery store job is it allows a delocalization of policy controls
if I need to clear an item off the current order so I can start afresh, because it doesn't end in a purchase, I need to call for a manager, who has a key card to permit this
I assume back in the day receipts had a notation for these sorts of things that you needed to store in your register likely with a stamp or initialization of approval, but a manager could shout an adhoc override of the override and you would note it and all could proceed
but these ad hoc policy changes based on the needs of the moment are incredibly important and so much of the infrastructure has been baked into an always correct, always networked computer
the computer cannot be trusted to always be correct and its errors are sharp and irrecoverable without drastic action that often takes hours, if not days.
on the one hand, private equity hollowing out enterprise software (of which POSs are an epitome) is a great fear of mine and I think there's good arguments that this should be treated as a national security crisis for CISSA to issue legally binding guidance on but that might just be that "national security" is the best way to get the govt involved where it shouldn't be
on the other hand, one of the few good results of the FAANG layoffs is the making more likely of greater diffusion of proper software architecture and testing, such as how to build a system that lets you mock the terminals as state machines & experiment with worst-case scenarios. but will it happen?

Rome on a Budget: Tips for an Affordable Day Trip
Are you dreaming of soaking in the rich history and vibrant culture of Rome but worried about breaking the bank? Fear not! With some savvy planning and insider tips, you can experience the wonders of the Eternal City without emptying your wallet.
In this guide, we'll walk you through how to make the most of your Best day trip of Rome without sacrificing the experience.
1. Plan Ahead for Savings
The key to a successful budget-friendly day trip starts with careful planning. Research and book your transportation well in advance to snag the best deals on flights, trains, or buses. Consider travelling during off-peak seasons or taking advantage of mid-week rates for even greater savings.
Additionally, look into combo tickets for attractions or guided tours, which often offer discounted rates compared to purchasing individual tickets.
2. Opt for Free Attractions
Rome is brimming with iconic landmarks and attractions that won't cost you a single euro. Take a leisurely stroll through the historic city centre and marvel at architectural wonders.
Explore the charming streets of Trastevere or venture off the beaten path to discover hidden gems tucked away in the city's neighbourhoods. Don't forget to visit the breathtaking Piazza Navona and soak in the lively atmosphere while watching street performers and artists in action.
3. Pack a Picnic Lunch
One of the simplest ways to save money during your day trip Rome is by packing a picnic lunch instead of dining out at restaurants. Head to a local market or grocery store and pick up some fresh bread, cheese, deli meats, and seasonal fruits to create a delicious spread to enjoy al fresco.
Find a scenic spot in one of Rome's picturesque parks or squares, such as Villa Borghese or the Pincio Gardens, and savour your homemade meal while taking in panoramic views of the city.
4. Take Advantage of Public Transportation
Navigating Rome's extensive public transportation network is not only convenient but also budget-friendly. Purchase a Roma Pass or a day ticket for unlimited rides on buses, trams, and the metro, allowing you to explore the city at your own pace without worrying about expensive taxi fares.
Alternatively, embrace the city's pedestrian-friendly layout and wander through its cobblestone streets on foot, soaking in the sights and sounds of Rome up close.
5. Seek Out Affordable Eateries
While dining out in Rome can be a delightful experience, it's easy to overspend on meals, especially in touristy areas. To stretch your budget further, seek out budget-friendly eateries and trattorias frequented by locals.
Look for "menu del giorno" specials, which offer a fixed-price menu featuring traditional Italian dishes at a fraction of the cost. Don't be afraid to venture beyond the city centre to discover authentic neighbourhood restaurants serving up hearty portions of pasta, pizza, and other Italian favourites at wallet-friendly prices.
6. Embrace the Art of Bargaining
Last but not least, don't be afraid to haggle and negotiate prices, especially when shopping for souvenirs or goods at local markets and street vendors. Polite bargaining is a common practice in Rome, and you may be able to score some great deals by flexing your negotiation skills.
Remember to approach the process with a friendly attitude and a sense of humour, and you may be pleasantly surprised by the discounts you can secure.
Conclusion
With these tips in mind, you're well on your way to enjoying an unforgettable day trip Rome without breaking the bank. By planning ahead, embracing free attractions, packing your own meals, making the most of public transportation, seeking out affordable eateries, and mastering the art of bargaining, you can experience the magic of Rome on a budget.
So, grab your camera, lace up your walking shoes, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime in the Eternal City!

✍️ - Blog #8 Looking back on my time in Italy, the Trevi Fountain was my favorite structure, I was amazed by seeing the real fountain in person that I had seen online and in movies for so long. The baroque architecture had incredible detail and grandeur.
As for my favorite city I think that Florence would take the top spot. Offering a mix of not only history and art, but iconic structures like the Florence Cathedral, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Vecchio and the Basilica of Santa Croce.
As for my initial travel goals, I'm thrilled to say Italy fulfilled almost every one of my goals.
My first goal was to try new foods and I did try some new foods and drinks like red wine and tagliatelle but those items were not as adventurous as I envisioned with my original goal.
My second goal was to expand my architecture photography and I am happy to say I was able to practice unique angels and capture iconic structures through the lens of my camera.
My third goal was to engage in local conversation with locals and when I visited a grocery store in Florence I spoke only Italian. I asked the worker where to find the water, how she was and told her I was having a good day. While the conversation was quite basic I was impressed with my ability to have a conversation with a local.
My fourth goal was to explore hidden gems and visit lesser known areas. I think I was able to accomplish this goal in Florence by seeking out local restaurants recommended to me from my sister that were authentic. I also accomplished this by walking around different neighborhoods and popping into different gelaterias and sampling those. This enriched my culinary experience in Italy and I am thankful I was able to try some hidden gems.
My last goal was to participate in a local cooking class. Along with 9 of my classmates I learned how to make pasta in a 3 hour workshop. We learned how to make ravioli and fettuccine, this experience helped me connect with local culture of making fresh pasta and connect with my peers.
In summary, Italy exceeded my expectations, providing not only unforgettable sights but great memories I will cherish for life. I know I will revisit this country again later in life and I hope to have new goals then.

Yesterday we got a late start. Our niece and her dad were in Amsterdam for the Friends Experience because they are both HUUUUUUUGE fans of the show.
They had tickets for a while now but my niece somehow forgot and went already with a friend of hers. Then yesterday she went again with her dad because, you know, Friends.
The experience involves accurate and various Friends sets and moments... and the two of them took full advantage with photographs of themselves in iconic spaces recreating iconic moments.
They both said it was super busy because the day got off to a delayed start due to technical problems... so there were more people than expected crammed into a shorter schedule. Still, the pictures they took make it seem like they're the only ones on set.
Adorable. 😊
Tumblr media
Around 2 in the afternoon I get a text they're on their way back from Amsterdam... so at 230 we leave our hotel for the local grocery store, Aldi, because Kimmer literally cannot get enough of the place.
Also, I'm not clear why we need more food. My aunt is a relentless feeder of family members. Plus we've got a stock of baked foods we keep receiving as gifts from family over the last few days.
Still, we're going up and down the aisles looking... looking...
And yeah. We find a gift or two for someone or someone's at home.
Don't tell them, though.
It's a surprise. 😉
3pm and my niece and her dad are pulling up to our hotel. Since we're still at Aldi, they drive down the street to pick us up...
And then we're on our way to the center of Gorinchem.
Now first we've gotta a coupla highly important things to figure out.
Here's how my niece put it:
"So my father and I are discussing a few options. We thought we could get a chai latte 😆 we could go into town and drink some in one of the local lunchrooms. Then I can take the card game to my grandparents tonight! Or we could get the chai latte to go and go to our house. Or we don’t get a Chai latte 🤣🤣 so many options😆"
Yeah.
Complicated. 😉
We quickly decide the Chai Latte is essential to our afternoon so we head to Gorinchem Centrum and park in the Kweeklust parking garage along one of the rivers surrounding the centrum.
We spend the next hour walking from the north end to the south end where there are locks and then those boats that take tourists down the Merwede river to castle Slot Loevestein.
I'm pretty sure this is the dock from which my cousins 'n I as children made that trip ourselves with our parents, one of whom took an iconic photograph of us.
From the parking garage, Kimmer 'n I do a pretty good job of walking and being present with family. This part of town is so picturesque, though, there's so much unique architecture, so much fascinating detail, that for a while in there we become raging photography monsters, eating up everything we see along the way.
youtube
This is, of course, my niece and her dad's hometown. It's also a small town and every so often they run into someone they know.
And then another someone.
And another someone.
Yeah.
That small.
Either that or they're both quite famous and we just don't know it. 🤔🤨
Along the way, both my niece and her dad point out the shops and cafes they frequent: a record store here, a high-tea restaurant there. It's a lovely bit of family Show 'n Tell. 😊
For example, my niece points out an entrance to a church that used to be walled off, hidden from the Nazi's during the occupation of Holland during World War II.
My niece's dad one-upped her by pointing out a lane along which is a row of connected, narrow homes. In one of these, he tells us, is the home in which he was born.
He just can't remember exactly which one. 😕
He can tell us, though, that the building across the narrow lane from the row houses used to be an orphanage. And then a block later we run across a shop featuring a painting of Hugo the Great and an illustration of castle Slot Loevestein which prompted a telling of this slice of dutch history in which Hugo is captured, taken to the town center where villagers help him escape inside a wooden cabinet.
Huzzah!
By 'n by, we wander to a historic door that's related to the Hugo the Great story... next to which is Espressobar Hugo.
Where we get our Chai Lattes.
It's 4pm.
Tumblr media
A lovely little espresso place, the bar offers a full sit-down experience: take your seat, check out the menu, and soon someone comes by to take your order.
Eventually, our Chai lattes are brought to the table. Actually, three Chai lattes and one cappuccino 'cause that's my niece's dad's jam.
The Chai, by the way, comes in tall, thick, clear glass cups accompanied by a shot of whipped cream with Bailey's and a little square of chocolate brownie.
Kimmer couldn't have hers... so she gave it to me for a sum total of two little brownie squares for my afternoon.
After a lovely hour of hot drinks, good fun company, and a bunch of photos Kimmer felt compelled to take at the back of the espresso bar, we take our leave of Gorinchem in order to swing by the home of my niece's family.
Why?
Because our day's primary agenda with her is to play her Harry Potter trivia game.
We've taken most of the afternoon with a lovely city walk, so now we're gonna grab the game on our way to my aunt and uncle's to play after dinner there.
Of course it's not a grab 'n go we do. The "stop" easily turns into a Show 'n Tell of their home including the "shed" out back that's a pretty massive deal with plenty of storage inside and a covered space outside for lounging on chairs. There's even a sign over the window facing the covered space that reads
Surf Shack. 🙂
It's actually more fun than I'd guess getting a tour of someone else's home. But this one's comfortable and hits a lot of the same design notes that we love from lighting to furniture to decor (including the old-school LPs and the Lego VW bus).
Tumblr media
6pm We're back at my aunt and uncle's place for dinner. At the dinner table's their daughter (arriving a little later than the rest of us due to work), her husband, their daughter/my niece, and then us.
Once again it's a lovely time had by all with a thoroughly traditional Dutch menu including variations on mashed potatoes, sausages, and beef.
After dinner, we settle around the table to play my niece's Harry Potter trivia game. We don't specifically read or follow the rules... we just play in a way that makes sense to us and is fun for us.
So.
Is it fun?
Well, all I can say is it's LOUD. It's competitive. And we're super into it against each other and with each other.
Because that's how we roll. 😉
Now, while we're thoroughly into all things Potter, my cousin's husband's in the living room with my aunt and uncle revisiting some of my uncle's history.
Meanwhile (and I don't know how this happened) the game we're playing at the dining room table turns into a wide-ranging conversation about the British royal family, from "The Crown" to the tabloids to each royal to each royal couple.
Again. No idea how that happened.
Definitely the conversation drew my aunt into the room. My aunt... who isn't into Harry Potter trivia games but is quite able to weigh in on British royals past and present. 🤔🤨
And then somehow (again, I don't know how) the conversation pivots to the challenges of being a parent and the simultaneous, complementary challenges of growing up. It's another wide-ranging and detailed conversation with everyone everyone everyone at the table weighing in.
'Cause we're all experts like that.
With so many parents at the table, it's like a support group. 😉
Inevitably, our arrival at 6pm flips through more hours than I would've guessed because suddenly it's 11 o'clock at night.
Did not see that coming either.
So, with hugs and kisses all around, my cousin's husband and niece drop us back at our hotel at 11:30.
Dang.
Talk about Time Travel.
That time at my aunt and uncle's flew.
And yeah. It's amazing how much life you can cram into those hours...
When you're with your tribe.
☺️

Hi,
recently i tried to pay more attention to what surrounds me. As i’m walking down the street, as i’m crossing the road, as i wait at the bus stop.
I look around. I look down and up.
And i want to focus here on the “looking up”. I think we don’t usually look at what’s above us. We mostly see what’s on our eye level.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But as i was walking back to my dorm - the weather sunny, music playing in my headphones, gentle breeze on my skin - i looked up. I looked up next to this sad-looking building, it’s condition is bad as you can see in the photo, but it has its charm. I mean it’s architecture.
Looking up i actually saw the shape of the building, how tall it stands. How the shape draws the lines in the sky. How it was nice looking at it. So nice i took a photo.
Yes. I am that person - i see it, i like it, i want a photo of it, and i got a photo of it.
Shameless, that’s what i am in those situations. (And that’s also why my gallery is full and i have to buy space on icloud+)
I want to encourage you to look up. On your way home, on your way to work, school, grocery store - whatever is may be (just a walk is great) - look up, and then, take a photo of what you see.
Life suddenly is more interesting. Funny that.
Sending kisses.
PS. If you happen to do the photo. Send it to me, or comment it. I would love to see what you can see when you look up.
#see what’s up

Sorrento Weeks 6 & 7: Food, Relaxation, and Museums
Ciao!
I’m back with another blog post. I’ve decided to combine weeks six and seven into one blog post because I got sick with a cold for most of the week and didn’t do a whole lot other than relax and recover. It’s also been so hot that doing things after class is getting difficult.
To celebrate the fourth of July, my friends and I did an “American Dinner” complete with burgers, potato salad, coleslaw, watermelon, and brownies! I decided to make potato salad and coleslaw because I was really craving potato salad. It was a fun experience trying to find all the ingredients as mustard and pickles aren’t really a thing in Italy. I was luckily able to find some in Dodeca, the largest grocery store in Sorrento, but it took some hunting. I’m super proud of how they turned out and it definitely satisfied my cravings. I think it’s important to note that Italian grocery stores are much, much smaller than American ones and things don’t last as long (especially bread and fruit) so I often end up shopping nearly every day. That being said, groceries are also super cheap here. I cook most of my meals and have been able to spend about 50-60 euros a week on groceries which includes my splurges on things like candies or interesting ice cream. The key is to try and think of dishes ahead of time and know what you have so you don’t buy duplicates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

I spent most of my time these last few weeks relaxing and recovering from two weekends of heavy travel as well as a cold I caught. It’s also starting to get to the time of year where going outside after like 1pm is a miserable experience so I spend a lot of time reading (I’ve been enjoying checking out ebooks from my local library) or watching TV just to beat the heat. The dorms, luckily, have great AC so you don’t have to worry about it being too hot inside. Some tips I have, besides just avoiding the sun, are to wear a hat to help shade your face, drink plenty of water, and try your best to avoid shopping at midday (try to go in the evenings or mornings). CIS Abroad planned a beach day one day where they reserved some lounge chairs at one of the beach clubs which was a fun and relaxing experience. Beach clubs are expensive (but come with sun loungers and umbrellas) so it was nice to not have to pay extra to go to one and enjoy the breeze as it was cooler than on the streets.

This weekend, I decided to go to the Naples Archaeology Museum because it’s where many of the famous frescos and statues from Pompeii are held. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve always been interested in Ancient Greek and Roman history and savor every museum I visit. It’s also a great activity because it’s out of the blazing sun. I bought tickets ahead of time to see both the museum and the Magna Grecia special exhibition. Getting to the museum was super easy as I just rode the train to Naples and hopped on the metro line 1 and got off at the Museo stop which put me right at the Archaeology Museum. The museum itself was so cool! I had all the original mosaics, frescos, and statues from Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as some artifacts from Ancient Egypt and many pieces of Greek pottery. A lot of the museum was focused on the history of settlements in the Campania religion which was really interesting to learn about. I spent four hours just wandering around and seeing all it had to offer. It was also nice because it was inside and out of the heat. It's definitely worth a visit just to see all the splendor of Ancient Rome.

Various photos from around the museums including some amazing frescos, beautiful architecture, and a gladiator helmet.
I’m excited because I’m headed to Rome to meet my friend next weekend and I have a bunch of field trips planned next week. I’m also sad that my time in Sorrento is coming to an end as it’s been a really great experience.
Ciao! Reganne Watts Aerospace Engineering Engineering in Sorrento, Italy

May 28th --- Asakusa
Welcome to the blog! My name is Matthew Martinez, a public relations student at UF, and today was my first day in Tokyo. First impressions are huge in public relations, whether it be giving a pitch or cutting a deal, its imperative that professionals understand that their first step leaves the biggest footprint. I’ve got to say, I am so pleasantly surprised with Japan. I always knew it would be cool to be here, but I was expecting slight resistance being a foreigner but I was wrong. Virtually everyone was polite and the language barrier is very easy to navigate in daily life like buying goods and reading signs. Trains are quicker than I expected, and I saw more behavorial diversity, even among Japanese people. Such an interesting culture here, and the commitment to efficiency is unreal. If we had a city that was a fraction of the size of Tokyo in America, it would burn down the next day. I will say this, an interesting thing that caught my eye was how the architecture in many places, primarily residential buildings, seem like they are from the 70s and 80s, yet they are so well kept that it feels like time has stood still. That along with the smoking areas really gives this place a feeling not just of a different country, but a different era. Anyway, we went to Asakusa and saw the Senso-ji temple. Such a crowd there, but things moved around quicklyly so that was nice. The architecture is so intricate and ornate, it was quite refreshing to see such a high-effort religious site, compared to American churches, some of which are in old strip malls and formerly abandoned buildings. My fortune, while eerie but good, remarked about something like finding success, but dealing with great and long hardship before reaching the goal in the end. I guess they knew how hard it was to get scholarship money to get here, and how my bones turned to jelly on that 11-hour flight.
The May 28th readings help bring Japanese religious history into view when paired with the excursion. Senso ji temple was built when two fisherman, Hinokuma and Takenari Hamanari pulled a statue of Kannon, the “bodhisattva” in 628. Kannon is a prominent figure on the path to enlightenment, particularly for compassion and mercy. The reading talk about the path to enlightenment in great detail. In Mayahana buddhism, people are subject of endless death and rebirth. To escape this cycle, one must reach enlightenment and get to nirvana. However, this path is incomplete unless the one who attains enlightenment seeks to bring others to enlightenment too. These fully enlightened students, or bodhisattva, are revered for delaying their enlightenment to bring others to it. Kannon resides in the Senso Ji temple, and millions visit each year to pray for a multitude of blessings over their current life. Other temples can serve to deal with past and future lives and their issues as well. Later in our excursion, we went to the Fukagawa Edo Museum. This museum houses a recreation of a block of Edo period Japan, right next to the Sumida River. In the readings, the Edo period in Japan saw amazing growth fostered by the consistent economic engagement of the samurai, or elite. Edo period social hierarchy was very different than it is today in Japan. In that time, it was very difficult to transition between social classes, and very often the working class was held down. At this museum, you can get a peek into how these commoners lived. There were merchant buildings, commoner homes, early grocery stores, and many more. It was clear to see how the transition to modern life was on the horizon, and how the logistics of Edo period Japan served as a base for the urban sprawl we see today in the same spot of Tokyo.
I've had some trouble with wifi here and cannot upload pictures through Tumblr. Try this google doc link instead!

The Best Neighborhoods to Live in Philadelphia: A Comprehensive Guide
Introduction
When you think of Philadelphia, you probably imagine the iconic city skyline, the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, or even the Rocky steps. But did you know that Philadelphia is also home to some of the best neighborhoods in America? From historic brownstones and cobblestone streets to parks with breathtaking views, this city has so much to offer. In this guide, we'll explore nine different neighborhoods in Philadelphia (including our top picks), their pros and cons, as well as what makes each one so special.
Society Hill
Society Hill is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Philadelphia. It was originally home to early settlers who built their homes around a church, which is still there today. Society Hill is located near Penn's Landing and Independence National Historical Park, so you'll have easy access to plenty of restaurants and nightlife options if you're looking for them.
The neighborhood has some great public schools: There are three elementary schools within its borders (Powelton, Franklin Learning Center and St Michael's), while two middle schools serve students from all over Philadelphia (Franklin Middle School and William Penn Charter). If your kids want to go on to high school, they can attend Central High School or Academy at Palumbo/Archbishop Wood Catholic High School--both located just outside Society Hill!
Society Hill has several grocery stores within walking distance including Whole Foods Market (which recently opened), Foodtown Supermarket & Pharmacy Inc., Acme Markets Incorporated - Food Stores & More!, ShopRite Supermarkets Inc., Giant Food Stores LLC - Grocery Stores & More!
Queen Village
Queen Village is located in the heart of the city. It's a neighborhood bordered by Washington Avenue to the north, Front Street to the south, South Street to the west and 7th Street to the east.
Queen Village has become one of Philadelphia's most popular neighborhoods for people who want an urban lifestyle but also want access to green space and outdoor recreation opportunities.
Schuylkill River Waterfront
The Schuylkill River Waterfront is a neighborhood in South Philadelphia that sits on the banks of the Schuylkill River. The neighborhood has a long history as an industrial area, but today it's one of the most desirable places to live in Philly thanks to its proximity to Center City, its abundance of amenities and great rental market.
The Schuylkill River Waterfront is bordered by Girard Avenue and Washington Avenue on the north side; Delaware Avenue on its east side; Oregon Avenue on its south side; and Front Street/Kingsessing Avenue on its west side (though some consider Kingsessing Avenue part of Southwest Philadelphia). The blocks between Oregon Avenue and Front Street/Kingsessing Avenue are known as "Brewerytown" because they were once home to several breweries along Second Street Pike (now called South Street).
Bella Vista
Bella Vista is a neighborhood in the Northwest section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The neighborhood is bounded by Castor Avenue to the north, Front Street to the south, Washington Avenue to the east and Roosevelt Boulevard to the west.
The Bella Vista Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and currently consists of more than 700 buildings constructed between 1882 and 1930 that contribute to its significance as an intact late Victorian / early 20th century urban residential community with unusual architectural styles.
Old City
Old City is the historical center of Philadelphia, with a large number of historic buildings and sites. It has one of the highest concentrations of historic buildings in the city and was home to many of Philadelphia's founding fathers.
Old City was also where William Penn established his first settlement in 1682, making it one of the oldest neighborhoods in America that still exists today. The neighborhood has since grown into an eclectic mix of restaurants, bars and shops along Market Street--making it one of our favorite places to hang out in Philly!
Center City West and Fairmount
Center City West and Fairmount are two of the most popular neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Both are located in the western part of Center City, which is where you'll find most of Philly's skyscrapers, businesses and financial institutions. They're also close to each other--and they share several key characteristics that make them such desirable places to live:
They're both located near Schuylkill River Park (which spans between Fairmount Park and Wissahickon Valley Park). This means you can easily walk or bike along trails without having to worry about traffic or other obstacles getting in your way.
The historic Boathouse Row on Kelly Drive provides access to boats for rowing practice at dawn each morning during warmer months; if you don't have your own boat yet but would like one someday soon anyway then now may not be too early for planning ahead!
Graduate Hospital and Point Breeze (North of Center City)
Graduate Hospital and Point Breeze are two of the best neighborhoods to live in Philadelphia. They're both located north of Center City, but they also have excellent public transportation and access to hospitals and medical care as well as shopping and restaurants.
Public transportation: The neighborhood is served by several SEPTA bus lines (including Routes 1, 17, 32 and 33) that connect it with Center City Philadelphia as well as other parts of the city such as Northern Liberties or Fishtown. There's also a subway station at 5th Street & Girard Avenue if you want to commute via train instead!
Schools: Residents attend schools within the School District of Philadelphia including Central High School for Boys; Girls High School; Friends Select School; Martin Luther King Jr Elementary School; Sayre High School; Southwark Elementary School; Thomas A Edison Middle School & William H Hallahan Academy Charter School For Girls among others
Fishtown and the Delaware River Waterfront (South of Center City)
Fishtown and the Delaware River Waterfront (South of Center City)
Fishtown is a popular neighborhood in Philadelphia. It's located just north of Center City and has lots of great bars, restaurants, and shops to explore. The Delaware River Waterfront offers plenty of beautiful views of the city skyline as well as plenty of places to relax on the waterfront if you want to go for a walk or run along the riverbank.
Horsham
