Daily wood tournament: Boxer brothers

Jyri (top), Justus (left), Julius (right), and Jouni (bottom). The only group of four brothers in the tournament, as well as the only twins (Justus and Julius), all four are definitely ones to watch. Jouni, the youngest, started things off strong, absolutely dominating Lauri in a violent beatdown only rivaled by Leo's knockout of Johannes. Justus took things a step further, nearly knocking out the former champion Ville in a double knockout, though failing to beat the count in the end. We're expecting the same level of power and aggression from Julius and Jyri too, and wouldn't be at all surprised if it comes down to another brother-on-brother faceoff in the quarter- or semi-finals.

This scene was the first one I wrote for this Roddacember, and the one that struck me so deeply that I decided to do these ficlets in the first place. Something about Rowan having to take more responsibility than he deserves as a literal middle schooler is just so devastating. This moment was so crazy to me but in the book it's just glossed over like it's nothing, just another day in Rowan's life.

Marlie had never wanted children.

Bearing children was expected of a woman of Rin, of course, like working the farms in spring or participating in town meetings. While the people of Rin married for love, no one spoke of soulmates, of finding the perfect family. Such was life in a small town like theirs.

Marlie had grown fond of Allun the baker in the past years. He was in the corner of her eye now, laying out a bedroll. Perhaps one day they would wed and have children of their own.

Gazing at the frail, frightened boy across from her, Marlie had never feared anything more.

Rowan, the young Keeper of the Bukshah, stared blankly into the distance, knees hugged to his chest. He shivered despite the warmth of the fire.

The boy was quiet but hid his emotions poorly. He had not complained after nearly falling off the cliff they had climbed earlier that day. But facing swarms of spiders and a swamp of horrors, his wide eyes and balled fists betrayed him.

Rowan had always been a gentle child, a black bukshah amongst the strong Rin people. Marlie silently cursed the wise woman Sheba for dragging him into this quest. He should not be terrified to death on this cursed mountain, pulled into a struggle far greater than he. She rummaged through her travel bag, searching for anything she had to provide some small solace.

“It is not worth carrying this last piece of toffee,” she told him, handing over the candy. Her words distorted her true feelings, in the Rin way. “You could finish it for us, I am sure.”

She was taken aback to hear Strong Jonn and Allun the Baker provide words of comfort alongside her. Jonn suggested that Rowan look over their map one more time, while Allun muttered something sentimental about the moon.

Rowan looked at the three of them, bewildered at the outpouring of affection. His mouth formed a tight smile, as if they were the ones in need of comfort. He dutifully returned Allun’s comment, ate the toffee, and opened the map.

Marlie could never bear the responsibility of a child, she decided. It was too heartbreaking.

im just so soft for how proud of her brother Annad is. she’s so full of love and admiration for her oddling (and yet not) of a brother.

i think she was too young to understand how different Rowan was to most of the villagers in Rin, and then when he brought the stream back home for the bukshah he became a hero to everyone, but no one more than Annad. i think she’s always loved him and has relied on his judgement and his knowledge.

‘If we do not act soon, [the bukshah] will die.’

‘Not Star,’ whispered Annad to her brother, who was the keeper of the bukshah. ‘Star will not die, though, will she, Rowan? Because you will give Star water from our well.’

‘Bukshah cannot drink from our well, Annad,’ said Rowan. ‘It is not sweet enough for them. It makes them ill. They can only drink the water that flows down from the Mountain. It has always been so. If the stream stays dry, Star will die like all the rest.’

i love her boldness and her confidence in her big brother, but also in herself. she would 100% be down to fight for what she believes in and to defend her loved ones.

i like to imagine Rowan and Annad growing up and being very supportive and understanding of one another. they may not necessarily be in sync or understand each other on an empathy level, but they understand each other on a sympathetic and compassionate level. they know how each other will react to certain things and how to help each other and what they love and what they hate and such. they are best friends, filled with so much love and admiration for the other. and i hope they give each other courage, by showing different types of bravery and different ways to overcome obstacles.

Supergirl season 5 episode 3

Ok.... so this episode wasn't all that exciting for me, I think the whole Lena/Kara scences were hyped up and we barely got 5 minutes of them before oh lo and behold Kara got a call and had to leave, so same old same old.

I did like the little touches of her flying around the world getting all of Lena's favourites though. Feels like someone read a fan fic!

I have to start properly by saying i LOVE Kelly Olsen! The fact she's giving advice to vendors she just met!

William Dey is still acting super dodgy, but I think the fact he looks highly uncomfortable with this means he is being coerced. Still seeing NOTHING that indicates he's Kara's new love interest yet.

Naww Kara is nervous about seeing Lena and binge eating donuts! Only her wanting the lunch to be perfect sounds like she preparing for a date.

Oh, awkward Hope/Eve hug. Sooo is Hope becoming sentient because she's evolving or because she's merged with Eve? AI do not usually voluntarily hug people.

Wait.... Lex Luthor, THE Lex Luthor let Eve know what he was writing in his journals? I mean I know Hope decifed it, but why did Eve know what was on them in the first place?

I actually don't have that much of an issue with Lena basically manipulating Kara into getting those journals. I mean one of the first things Kara did when she met Lena was to try and manipulate her into giving her info on her mother, then proceeded to spend 3 years lying, using and manipulating her. So yeah... not all that fussed. Plus Kara read a bunch of those journals with Lena, how is Lena getting her hands on them healthy at all? Kara is being a dumb ass here, she should have just said no.

Ha! Finally Kara admits she breaks the law all the time!! Take that 'Kara has never done anything wrong ever' people. This scene reminds me of when Kara discussed her relationships with James and Mon El with Alex.

😂 Alex is going to scold Brainy, and Kara learned all the rule breaking from Alex!

I've never said this before, and I don't want to, but Nia can f**k off with the way she just treated Brainy! Nia told him to be himself and now she's not happy with that, confusing the poor guy! 'Its too much! No more food, no more anything!" Harsh words! Now the poor guy thinks there's something wrong with him. Nia just let this carry on when she could have dealt with it when Brainy gave her the chance to. How could you hurt Brainy that?!

Way to much 'me and Lena' 'Lena forgave you 'it worked out for me and Lena' ugh we get it already! Some dodgy stuff is going to go down.

Lena doesnt look happy with what she's doing at all, remember how excited she usually is when making tech? This isn't excitement, Lena knows this isn't right, but she feels she has no other choice. Lena is still traumatized and Kara's even said that in the episode. But this was the first time Kara has seen Lena since she confessed, so no one has been bothering to try and help Lena at all? No one thought, you know what, Lena could do with some help? She is dealing with this all on her own, she's not even putting her trust in her AI since she said she doesn't trust. Lena is in need of help. But I honestly think they are pushing the dodgy bits so she can be saved down the line.

All in all a bit of a boring episode, the Lena and Kara scenes couldn't even save it. Jonns flash back was the most interesting part. The villain isn't memeorable and I couldn't even tell you her name. They made Kelly a real dumb ass in the episode, they made Nia awful to Brainy! Waaay to much James Olsen, it's like they are trying to cram as much of him in as possible before he goes and he's still useless. Alex needs help and is to clingy. Not surprised by the William stuff, Andrea was actually awful in this episode.

I give this episode a meh...

Under the cut is again some notes on the Temmie talk, and some talk about why the ”Finnished” Temmie did not go to school in the translation above. This includes stuff like government-sustained benefits so here’s a tw: politics I guess.

Like the other times Temmie has shown up I tried to incorporate my lack of knowledge of Finnish dialects into something semi-coherent. Results vary, but at least I tried! There’s a lot of Temmie talk and small speech bubbles so this time I added some spelling mistakes too. However, the stripeshirt-Temmie is imitating what’d be the unique internet speak of teens/pre-teens that are generally called ’Jonne’(it’s a newish male first name associated with younger folk, used as slander when making fun of their antics, or as a general name for someone who’s young, it’s context sensitive but always rude.). I’m not sure how well it comes across, since the example sentences I found involved drug and energy drink use, memes, and being general jerks and/or idiots, and the Temmie here is doing nothing like that.

University and college education is free for Finland’s residents. At that level the lunch is no longer free like in the mandatory education, but with student ID you get it starting from less than two euros (no portion control except in fancier things) per day, and the same card gives you discounts on public transport and museums etc. too. Possible reasons one wouldn’t be able to go to the college despite wanting to are: - Not getting in because of not enough points from your grades in your previous place of study, or not getting enough points in the entrance exam. - Not being able to afford the expenses that come from studying. The school is free, but existing outside of the school hours is not. If you need yet cannot afford or find an apartment, or reliable transportation (though these days some universities and colleges are very happy to let you study from home), or don’t have money to eat, buy books for the courses and other needed study equipment, you’re in for a hard time. Libraries can only help the fastest students when it comes to books, they cannot carry enough copies for a whole class. Some people take a student loan to cover the expenses of being alive without having to work, so they can fully concentrate on their studies and student life. The guarantee for it is the government, and you have 30 years to pay it back from the first time you use the money, the first payment is two years after you’ve finished your studies. There’s also a student benefit that’s quite low but still helps some, and a separate benefit for living expenses for the ones who don’t live with a parent any more, it’s supposed to cover the minimum humane living condition it seems. Benefits aren’t paid back ever unless they find out later they overpaid you or you weren’t actually entitled to it.

In the underground, I strongly doubt distance to the school would be any issue, so if Temmie lived at home her basic needs would be covered, and once she goes to the school in the game she learns a lot there, so she’s smart and the exams wouldn’t stop her. I think the only reason she couldn’t afford her studies in a Finnish society would be not being able to afford the books and other equipment. Anything made of paper that’s thrown away gets recycled for new paper here, so only very dirty ones would go to landfill (well where I’m from those get burned for energy), and the trash area in UT has a lot of water so maybe any school books they get are ruined to the point of not being usable or recyclable at all. They do have a lot of trees in Snowdin that could be made into paper, so monsters probably make their own books from scratch. In case they make book copies by writing them by hand, they wouldn’t be very cheap(or at least niche college books wouldn’t be). Also stuff like pencils aren’t usually thrown away in good shape either so they’d have to make those too. So, in the hopes this doesn’t come up in the future to bite me in the butt, I referenced a joke from a commercial: Some years ago Finland’s post office had a campaign where they promoted sending postcards all year round, since unlike in other ways of being in contact, ’you don’t have to tell them everything’. In their radio ad a young man was in the middle of a wild student party and writing a card back home, saying everything’s fine, he’s studying really hard, and please send some money for pencils and erasers. I used to know John Woo as the director who filmed Mission Impossible II, though before his Hollywood period he has been making a lot of crime films in Hong Kong. A Better Tomorrow (1986) starring teenager star singer and actor Leslie Cheung, Chow Yun-Fat and Ti Lung was John Woo's breakthrough. The film was made on a tight budget but became an Asian blockbuster Hong Kong box office records. A Better Tomorrow is a story of two brothers, one of whom is a young policeman, while the other is mafia boss. It's needless to describe the plot, as it is quite naive, and many things are way too corny making it unwatchable for western viewers. The most important part is crazy shooting scenes with almost endless ammo characters have in their possession. Chow Yun-Fat performance is actually, he has over-shined the other co-stars which led him to become one of the most famous Hong Kong actors. Till date, he remains the highest paid Hong Kong actor after Jackie Chan. A Better Tomorrow was a cult film for Hong Kong which has influenced Asia a lot. Many teenagers were trying to act and dress "like Mark" (played by Chow Yun-Fat). Lots of references in pop music and cinema were made to A Better Tomorrow. Later, John Woo produced two sequels to the film. To be frank, I decided not to watch it, but try the other two famous films of Woo which happened to be better.

The Killer (1989)

The Killer is not only known as another Hong Kong blockbuster becoming a huge success on the box but as the film became quite popular in the West. It was praised by Tarantino who took some things from it as the features of his own films, just as he did with the Japanese Lady Snowblood starring Meiko Kaji. Luc Besson and Robert Rodriguez were also influenced by this film. Chow Yun-Fat returns to John Woo's cast as The Killer. Despite his violent killings, he appears to be a man of honour never killing the innocent people or policeman. Accidentally, he injuries a female singer (Sally Yeh) and later he tries to do everything to help her recover. He also saves a baby during one of the shoot-outs. The killer is being hunted by the detective (Danny Lee) who learns how to think like the killer to capture him. As the plot develops, the detective learns that a killer is actually a decent man. They develop friendship and confront the gangsters together at the final long shoot-out. Again it is quite corny, but this is already more fun than a Better Tomorrow. Especially, shoot-outs and stunts are much better here. Keeping in mind, The Killer is a film of its particular genre, I would conclude it is a good one.

Hard Boiled (1992)

The third famous Hong Kong crime movie of Jonn Woo is Hard Boiled and it is actually very nice! Comparing with A Better Tomorrow and The Killer, there is not so much unrealistic bullshit as "good killer" or exaggerated relationships between cop-mafia boss brothers. The plot is surprisingly not so linear. It has one important twist with Alan happening to be a police agent undercover, and it is not that obvious. The story kept me entertained till the end, and I liked it. 

Unlike the other crime movies of Woo, this one was really epic. The final shoot-out lasts 50 minutes, can you imagine that? The badass fight in the hospital where toddlers are takes as hostages, many patients are brutally killed, dozens of policemen being shot, etc. Moreover, there is an arsenal in the morgue of the same hospital. It is needless to say, it will explode in the end. The whole scene is really epic, the way it lasts is awesome and very catchy. I have never seen such a long shoot-out on the screen! The stunts and visual effect during the shooting scenes are carried at a decent level, which is another advantage.

Chow Yun-Fat this time portrays the policeman, while Tony Leung Chiu-Wai appears as Alan. It was one of the best early roles of Tony Leung who is actually my favourite Hong Kong author. The Western audiences loved Hard Boiled very much, it was well-received in the US and Great Britain and became a typical bloodshed Asian movie for western viewers. It was a surprise for me to know, that the success on the box of Hard Boiled in Hong Kong was very modest, comparing to The Killer and A Better Tomorrow. Nothing, but a mystery as Hard Boiled is not corny like other crime movies and it is actually pretty cool!
