Idk if ASAW will still be going on when this is posted, but I was scrolling through the aromantic tag and I'm so confused by how many people are calling it Aromantic Awareness Week / AAW????

Like granted it's a minority that and I /know/ learning new terms can be really hard for some people, but I remember when I first learned about ASAW back in… I think 2018 or 2019 it was very much talked about and explained to those who asked; That Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week was much preferred and was trying to become the new default because arospec who weren't the aro version of "black stripe aces" feeling left out and dismissed during our week. So well I assume it's probably mainly just people who didn't know that, I can't help but feel like it aromantics specifically trying to exclude arospec folks as I saw that happening way to much in the past to trust it suddenly died out and everyone who used Aromantic Awareness Week in their posts aren't exclusionists. This kinda turned into a half vent half history lesson lol, but I was not expecting to see AAW used especially more then I personally saw even last year.

This is coming a bit late for ASAW, unfortunately, but I just finished it earlier today. Gotta love some aro pride flag origami.

I began identifying as aro when I was 19. I was relieved to finally have a name for this part of me, but I was also upset, scared for my future, and in some ways lonelier than I had been previously.

It’s taken over five years to get to where I am today, but at long last I’m at a place where I am proud to be aro. The future doesn’t seem as hopeless as it once did, and I have (in large part) the aro community to thank for that. All I can go from here is forward.

how i found “aro” was a thing

like many allo aros (afaict from reading aromantic tumblr), i assumed that romance was fake. i thought it was a thing that symbolized sexual attraction, because i felt that, and it made enough sense.

society in general seemed to consider sex both highly valuable and highly taboo. so it was logical that romance would stand in as a non-taboo symbol for sex. and it was also logical that people would do the romantic stuff for access to sex, because it was valuable.

the only puzzle left was friends-with-benefits, which was just sort of, “You can do that!? (How do I do that?)” and also, how was it different? but i was old enough by then to be careful of looking bad by asking the latter question, so i mostly just forgot about it.

it wasn’t until asexuality came across my radar that i really started to think hard about it. there was a lot of “aces can still love!” and that didn’t make sense. it actually made me wonder, if aces could love, that meant sex wasn’t love? and that would mean there should be “aromantic”?

and through that, i discovered the split-attraction model, which also treated romantic attraction as a real thing, and that pretty much settled it. i was aro.

aaand then i had a new appreciation for how i hurt people along the way. which i still don’t want to talk about, but which also forms the basis of why i want representation. it’ll be better for everyone.

I think now’s a good time to recognise that aromanticism isn’t performative and that ASAW, while nice, is not a time of all-importance. There isn’t some quota of activity to fill or then ‘oh no, your aromanticism has expired!’. There’s no such thing as a ‘good’ or ‘bad aro’ or a ‘you can’t do that and be aro’.

For those who also feel like they should do something more this week remember that’s it’s fine even if you don’t. For those who don’t really see this week as a big deal that’s absolutely fine as well. Just do what you’re comfortable with and enjoy your week however you want, that’s what I’m going for, at least.
