just re-watched asoue netflix finale episode.

you guys don't even want to read this, i am about to be so weird about this series.

ouugghhhh the. them finally driving in the fact that neither side of the schism is free of sin <2 hehe, sudden new perspective that changes the moral and ethical implications of everything that's happened in the series before *twirls hair and kicks feet* <222

olaf just being casually objectified. good. as he should. im happy. im happy he got put in that cage too btw. he is sooo pathetic and unwell and dramatic in this episode btw. if u even care.

klaus has grown up so much holy fuck. looking back at the first episodes and comparing him in them to him in this??? even his voice is so different oh my god. the boy really grew up. damn.

honestly i don't blame violet for wanting to stay on the island at first. she's been through so much, she's had to actively protect her siblings for so long, i don't blame her for being drawn to what seems like a happier, safer place.

i wish we would've seen sunny all grown up and stuff. see her be like an older sister to bea ii. might have to make a teenager/young adult sunny design. i think she'd be a culinary arts major. i also like to think later on in life she reached out to fernald and they're still friends and occasionally meet up and play card games whenever fernald's not at sea with his family :)

"and people hurt me." actually losing my mind rn. that wasn't an accusation, and that wasn't an apology. that wasn't a judgement, and that wasn't an excuse. it's just two statements, both equally true. and they're both acknowledging things that they clearly haven't shared with each other before: kit's acknowledging how her feelings for olaf are in conflict with her morals, and olaf's acknowledging that his actions directly mirror the way he's been treated, specifically because he was unable to break that cycle. kit's admitting that she is not fine with what olaf's done to other people, and olaf's admitting that he's not fine with what's been done to him. it's not an emotional scene because they're in love; it's an emotional scene because of the lives they've lived.

Saiki Kusuo No Psi Nan (JP: 斉木楠雄のΨ難, ENG: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., Abbreviations: 斉Ψ, SaiPsi) is a multimedia franchise that has started as a manga drawn and written by Asou Shuuichi.

The manga started as a one shot work, but since its release in 2012 it has recieved a serialization that ended in 2018. In 2013 is has recieved a Flash anime adaptation that was exclusive to Shonen Jump's mobile app, as well as a series of Vomics that dubbed the manga. The series recieved two novels written by Hinata Shou and illustrated by Asou-sensei. It's currently best known outside Japan for its 2016 anime adaptation.

When is the next season of the anime coming? - There won't be one. Unless the studio decides to adapt the novels, which is unlikely, they don't have enough source material left to make a full season out of it.

Will Saiki get more manga chapters? - The manga finished in 2018. It's unlikely for Asou-sensei to continue this project after concluding it.

Is Kusuo aroace? - Canonically no, but it's a popular headcanon.

20 Questions for Fic Writers

@snarky-wallflower Thanks for the tag! This was a lot of fun :)

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

67 currently, but I have deleted a few old ones lol

2. What’s your total word count?

Now, when I tell you I went overboard on this question, I went overboard. My private, unposted, solely-written-by-me fics' total word count is 227,868. My total word count for fics I've collaborated with @charismabee on is 477,549, and my total word count on AO3 is 389,530. However, quite a few of my AO3 fics are collabs with Red, so if you take away everything like Wilting Flowers and Owl House but Kindergarten, you're left with 225,235 words written solely by me. So, if you total up 225,235 + 227,868 + 477,549, then you get a grand total of 930,652 words! Then, of course, there's the whole matter of my old fics on regular Word and not Docs, which would probably add up to at least another 50,000 total considering we're talking about my ASOUE and DT17 phases, as well as all of the private Viva Pinata and miscellaneous musical stuff lurking in there, and we've got that weird writing app on my tablet that I used a lot a couple of years ago whenever my phone got confiscated, but I cannot be bothered to search through all of that right now. So, it mostly rounds up to around 1,000,000 words. Fanfiction may or may not be taking over my life. (Gosh I love maths <3)

3. What fandoms?

I've written mostly for the Kindergarten 1 and 2 fandom, my total fics on AO3 for it totaling 38. However, I have written a heck of a lot of OMORI as well, and dabble in the Owl House, DHMIS, a few webseries on YT as well as the Hatchetverse sometimes, too!

4. Top 5 fics by kudos

1. World's Okayest Uncle at 799. My latest WIP, written for the Hatchetfield Universe and based around the concept of Paul Matthews becoming the accidental uncle of every kid in town. Each chapter focuses on a different child (the three so far about Alice, Richie and Pete respectively), and once all of them have been sufficiently adopted, I've been considering adding some slice-of-life stuff, exploring the changed character dynamics, and looking into parts of canon that would change in the AU as well. 2. Hollow at 455, a Hunter-centric one-shot for the Owl House set immediately after season 2 finished. It was written in the post King's Tide craze of awesome Human Realm content, so it got quite a lot of hits at the time. It focuses on Hunter dealing with the aftermath of Belos seemingly having died, and himself having being thrown into a completely new, unfamiliar world as an unfamiliar God took over his own :) 3. Flapjacks at 279, another Hunter-centric piece because TOH fans can't get enough of him lol (I am very much one of those fans). I began writing it back when Thanks to Them was first released, then got the motivation to finish it after I saw Watching and Dreaming. It focuses on Hunter returning to the Human Realm after the Collector's defeat, as well as Camila's thoughts on being a parent of who knows' how many kids at this point. Hunter finally gets the chance to mourn, and finds out what a flapjack actually is. 4. Gravesfield Historical Society, at 275. In which it's only natural that the Boiling Isles' leading Human Expert decides to do some research, and Gus does his very best to ignore the images plaguing him from looking into Belos' mind. Vee looks for some closure, Hunter is very protective over his little siblings, and Gus just wants to have a fun day at the museum. Things... Don't go to plan. 5. Fading, at 215. Yet another TOH work (I was around when the fandom was active as heck), one of the shortest pieces I've ever written at only 722 words. It's from Flapjack's POV during that scene in Thanks for Them. You know the one. I made lots of people cry, and sacrificed the birb.

5. Do you respond to comments?

Of course!! I thoroughly appreciate every comment I receive; they really make my day. Being part of an active fandom with the Uncle Paul AU has sort of taken me by storm so my inbox is pretty clogged at the moment, but I promise that I have read and smiled over and will reply to the comments all of my lovely readers have left behind! It means so much that someone's not only taken the time to read what I've written, but that they liked it enough to leave a comment behind. Even just keysmashes or "<33"s are really lovely to see, so thank you to the wonderful commentors out there! You guys are awesome :D

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Ooh, now this is a tough one! Pretty much 95% of what I write is angst, with a good 70% being Hurt No Comfort. Still, I think the angstiest ending I've ever written would have to be that of either "Enough", in which 13 y/o me decided it was a good idea to follow the perspective of kindergartener Theodore Huxley as his brother pushed him to his death, or "Wilted", in which 13 y/o me decided it was a good idea to follow the perspective of suicidal kindergartener Lily as she gave up on finding the one person who cared about her and committed suicide as a result of being bullied. Wilted should probably win out considering the implications of what would happen to Billy as a result, and bc the ending subsequently led to Nugget's death too, but Ted's train of thought in Enough is so gosh darn sad.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Definitely "McDonald's". That's the fluffiest thing I've ever written, no doubt about it. Not a smidgen of angst, just a bunch of kids with colourful eyes and pointy ears walking into a fast food restaurant and discovering what chicken nuggets are. It literally ends with the promise of more cute adventures to come, so I'd say this one's a no-brainer loll

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I've only ever received hate once, on a little Gravity Falls AU I made entitled "Puppet Strings and Stage Curtains". I got some pretty nasty criticism on it and, as a kid who was still very anxious about posting stuff online, it really impacted me at the time. I'm still a little nervous even now to open up my inbox because I think I might have gotten another comment like that shfjdhhgkjh. I wound up abandoning the fic because my motivation was completely destroyed, and I couldn't even look at the thing without feeling ashamed. However, I haven't received any hate since, which is great! There's just no reason for it, really; if you like something, leaving a comment is wonderful, and it makes the author happy! If you don't, just don't read the fic. Leaving a hurtful comment isn't going to make anyone happy, and can be really damaging to writers. Shoutout to @weedkillercentral, who, without fail, leaves the bizzarest comments known to man on almost every work I post.

9. Do you write smut?

Nope! I am a ✨minor✨ (@snarky-wallflower dw I too am a nerdy prude, sex jokes are Ew). Still, I do enjoy writing romance from time to time! Some ships are straight-up hard not to enjoy reading/writing for :))

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Funny story, actually. I used to have Wattpad and, as much as I hated using it, a friend of mine liked the site so I used it to support her. I wound up posting some of my own stuff on there at one point. I will never be able to get over the fact that when you searched up my username online, the images used to show a picture of Sharkbomb Glomgold. How do I know this? Because small me got bored and looked up my username, and accidentally found a mirror site to Wattpad with some of my stuff on. It credited my username and everything, but I panicked about it because as far as I was aware, I had no control over whether I could take it down or what else could be put on it. So, I deleted everything on my account, and just like that, the fics on the mirror site vanished. So no, I've never had anything outright stolen-- at least, I hope I haven't-- but that was a Not Fun experience for little me a few years ago

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, I'm not famous enough for that lol. I did have an offer for someone to make a podfic of smth I wrote a few years ago, but they never got around to it. Still, if anyone ever wants to translate one of my fics, I'd love it if you did! Please just let me know and acknowledge me as the OG author; having a work translated sounds awesome.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! Many thanks yet again to the amazing @charismabee, my dear co-author and the Kel shirt to my Maverick cosplay wig. The amount of hours I've spent writing with her is actually insane, as well as the times we've just messaged brainstorming AUs or having far too strong feelings about the show Elena of Avalor. We've done joint Whumptobers and Febuwhumps, fics that are combinations of the nichest stories and characters, a lot of redemption arcs for 5-year-olds... If you like my stuff, I thoroughly encourage you to go give her work a read at TheFearIsRed on AO3! :D

If anyone else ever wants to try collaborating on something, I think I'd be willing to give it a try! There are loads of talented authors on here, and co-writing is a lot of fun <3

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Hmm... Well, Paulkins is an obvious one (remember that one post about "hatchetfield fans when normal man and his barista crush show up for 5 seconds"? yeah that's me). They have a level of mutual trust and understanding that's just really nice to explore, they both have issues galore but will support each other no matter what, half infected Paul content is golden and as an avid Uncle Paul truther, Emma finding out about his many children is just too funny a concept to me. They act like teenagers when they see each other, they're both down bad, she knows he doesn't like the Christmas advert jingles, he thinks she's funny,,, they're so <3

Another strong contender is Pearla (Penny x Carla), from the K2 fandom. @goldmoth82 was the one who got me into writing about them with their absolutely incredible stuff (art, fics, you name it!). They're just a traumatised android and a thieving arsonist, what more could you want?

Gold rush (Kel x Mikhael) is another of my favourites though, mostly because it's so funny. Mikhael has declared them rivals, and Kel could not care less. Mikhael challenges him to races, and Kel beats him easily. Mikhael insults him often, but Kel doesn't retaliate. Mikhael wants to be independent and special, to stand out from everyone else. Kel wants to be appreciated as more than just Hero's brother, to be liked and acknowledged as himself. Mikhael would vehemently deny his feelings until Daphne and Bowen tied them up together and forced him to confess. Rivals are just lovers in disguise, everyone. One-sided gold rush is even funnier, because they're technically one-sided rivals. Kel was Mikhael's homosexual awakening. Mikhael looks so dumb and flamboyant because he's trying to impress him. Mikhael claims he hates him and that his bright red face is from anger after Kel effortlessly beats him time and time again. I love them.

But I think out of everything, Wrightworth would have to take my top pic for favourite ship. Gay lawyers who would die for each other for the win.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?

Ohh gosh. There are quite a few, but I'd probably say this year's Whumptober. My mental health went schwoop this October and I only got up to day 11 despite my plans. I still intend to finish the collab one with Red when I have time again (exams suck), and I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to get around to completing it. At least there's always next year! :"]

16. What are your writing strengths?

Definitely characterisation. I have a lot of fun getting into characters' heads and making studies on them in different scenes or just overall, and have a lot of fun bouncing different personalities off of each other. Once I know a character, I know the character, and writing their POV is as simple as breathing lol. I'd also say that I'm pretty good at tension building and breaking, as well as Hurt No Comfort (you need some good old angst, I'm your gal).

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Action scenes, for one, though I've been improving on them since I started the TOH Kindergarten AU! I'd also say that I struggle with slower-paced, filler sort of stuff. I might like to build up to an event, but chapters that don't have plot relevance just sort of stump me lol, even when they're necessary :)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?

I enjoy learning languages, and have been teaching myself Spanish for the past couple of years or so. However, writing them is a whole separate thing entirely. If I had a translator, I'd be all good! I just get a little worried when I write any language that isn't Spanish because google translate is unreliable as heck, so I typically tend to avoid it. Luckily, none of my fandoms really require it- but if that Franziska & Miles brainrot doesn't go away soon, I might be in a bit of a pickle trying to write German dialogue hshjhgfk

19. First fandom you wrote for?

A Series of Unfortunate Events (the Netflix show). It was the first fandom I got really, properly into, diving in headfirst at the age of about 12 and finding a lot of awesome content. The obsession I had with VFDBaudelaireFile13's Violet Snicket AU "Misery Loves Company" a few years ago was wild. My writing back then was very jolty, and I wrote in chapters that only lasted a few paragraphs with big, bold titles that often had at least two exclamation marks at the end. Still, ASOUE is one of my favourite shows to this day, and I don't regret a thing from my time binge-reading everything I could find for it (except that one lemons fic I accidentally came across when starved for content), nor any of the silly little unposted AUs I wrote on Word.

20. Top 3 fics I've ever written:

I puzzled over this question for ages, but found it impossible to choose just one! Ignore that I'm cheating a little here, and take three instead <3

1. An unposted collaborative work with @charismabee/TheFearIsRed that we called MPT. It was the first big fic I ever wrote, and it was probably what really got me into writing as a hobby. I got to spend time at random intervals writing about and whumping my favourite characters with someone I'm very close with, making up the plot as we went along. I remember coming up with the initial idea on a swingset, and spending hours colour-coding every segment of those 50,000 words based on each mention of a character as well as who wrote what. MPT is messy, and a tad repetitive in places, and while finished, I don't believe it's something I'll ever post. But it holds a special place in my heart, and it's a lot of fun looking back on my writing from a couple years ago compared to now 2. Not sure if this fully counts, but an untitled Omori WIP I've got going atm is definitely up there. It's Hero-centric with huge emphasis on his trauma, following the course of the year the events of the game occur in. I've had a blast writing his thoughts and time at college, and I'm geberally just really proud of it thus far. Hopefully, it'll be done by January in time for his birthday! :) 3. Now this one is a posted work– Magical Girls: Omori!, another collab with Red. We came up with the idea, binge-watched season one of Glitter Force on Netflix, and ran with the plot. We've planned out all of season 1 with ideas for season 2, incorporated a plethora of great characters, and been able to mess around with a fun fantasy high school full of our favourites. It's always wonderful to write, and I really like how it's been going!

I randomly recall when netflix wanted to advertise for asoue season 3 and they started to make an advent calendar for it, where they showed sneak peek clips (as s3 was gonna come out january 1st), and they skipped days and then awkwardly stopped doing it after they realized...

Hi! I'm really late to the ASOUE fandom, so I'm happy that there are still some great fanblogs around. I loved reading through yours. I wanted to ask what you think of the Netflix series and the movie in relation to the novels. Apologies if you've already answered this question!

Also (and slightly related) do you have any Jacques Snicket headcanons for the book or the Netflix character? I never really noticed him in the novels but I loved him (probably Nathan Fillion) in the show.

welcome to asoue fandom! i’ve been a fan of these books since they were first published and didn’t get involved in fandom until after the netflix series had finished, so it’s never to late, and i’m glad you enjoyed my blog!

i have talked about my thoughts on the netflix adaptation (i forget which tag i used, i was trying to use a consistent one for that at some point…), but i love talking about adaptations and how they work and i’m always happy to talk about it some more!

i saw the movie when it came out, and i don’t remember feeling very strongly about it one way or another, which says something because 2004 would be around the peak of me obsessively rereading the books so i should have cared a lot. i mostly remember really liking violet’s costume in an objective, aesthetic sense and also feeling it was deeply deeply wrong for the tone of the books/how things looked in my head. i’ve only rewatched it once since then with lemony snicket’s commentary track, which is just absolutely delightful, so i’m afraid i don’t have much to say about it.

i think the netflix show is a good adaptation with some things i will go to my grave mad about. i love the visuals, it’s the exact right amount of fantastical and timeless. it’s the right amount of funny while still having moments of intense seriousness. i love the musical numbers in season 2. i love what they did to change the vibe of this being a tv show so it shouldn’t exist in a world driven by books like the books do. i love the addition of the recurring adult characters.

since you asked about jacques snicket, i really love how they re-conceived that character to be a suave, james bond-y, spy type. i think it serves the rest of the changes they made really well. i enjoy his relationship with olivia and larry the waiter. i love the dynamic he has with olaf. i will die mad that they didn’t give him a unibrow. we deserve otherwise conventionally attractive jacques snicket with a unibrow. it’s thematically important damn it!

book!jacques snicket, who we only really get to know through his letters in the unauthorized autobiography and quigley’s memories, will always be the jacques snicket of my heart, but i can love both.

also still mad about the opera night. it is absolutely thematically critical that the viewer not know what happened, and what you gain isn’t enough to offset that. also wish we had gotten more morally grayness from vfd. i really love how the organization is introduced in season 1 and 2, but it never got to evolve into being about how kind, well meaning people can do horrible things either because of their own flaws or because of intractable circumstances, and we all have to live with that because it’s part of the human condition.

i don’t have any netflix!jacques head canon, except that in the fictional version of the show that i got to have input in, olivia learns that he’s done really difficult to rationalize things from the snicket file and that puts her in a much more similar to book!olivia’s mindset when the baudelaire’s meet her at the carnival.

i have lots of book!jacques head canons. i think i’ve talked about most of them before but these are my favorite: 1, jacques looks almost exactly like lemony but is several inches shorter and 2, jacques is the least committed to vfd of his siblings, and he will always put the safety of the people he loves (but especially lemony) over the greater good.

8) common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

That Saiki is MEANT to be aroace representation / is CONFIRMED aroace (which then people use to harass anyone who ships Saiki).

Throughout the course of canon you can easily argue that Saiki is SOMEWHERE on the aroace spectrum— personally I see him as demiromantic gray/asexual or somewhere thereabouts. He's clearly not impressed by human bodies but is not immune to offu once he respects Teruhashi enough, and based on the Chiyo/Kaido love letter situation he thinks that dating is just a step beyond best friends.

HOWEVER......... There is pretty much a 0% chance that Saiki as a character was meant to be 100% aromantic asexual.

While it's certainly possible to headcanon him as full aroace (especially easy in the first season), unfortunately it's pretty obviously not the author's intent.

Think about it this way: if you wanted to create explicitly gay male representation (especially if you were not allowed to SAY he's gay, remember that this series was made for Shonen Jump lol), would you also create a female character that he's immediately obsessed with, blushing at the sight of her and spying on her and sighing that he can't be with her? So much so that people often think he's in love with her, both in canon and IRL?

Obviously not, that's super counterproductive... So if Saiki was MEANT to be full aroace, Satou Hiroshi simply wouldn't exist. Or Asou would have made Saiki react to him in a completely different way, like make him try to study Satou like a labrat in an attempt to copy or steal his normality / normality powers, without blushing or putting him in a romantic crush chain diagram.

It's just way funnier throughout the series for Saiki to NOT be interested in dating anyone 99% of the time, which then makes it EVEN FUNNIER when he INSTANTLY falls for Literally Just Some Guy, even if it's left unclear what the exact nature of his obsession is (again... this is Shonen Jump lol, and he's literally the protagonist).

So yeah there's literally nothing wrong with shipping Saiki even if you have the bizarre puritanical belief that playing dolls with imaginary little guys in certain ways is Wrong and a Sin. It's just cringe at worst tbh, and that's never inherently bad.

No need to attack people for shipping something you don't like... just block the tag and/or OP if you hate the content and move on....

Thank you! As I've been rewatching the series, I've remembered what I loved about s1, and what other people loved about s1--the sort of dark academia feel, the pure psychological drama, the theme of recovery from abuse. The two seasons after can feel like a whole different show, and I don't think that's a bad thing. S1 indeed gave us the most angst, but the other two seasons gave us great plot and drama. By the end of s3, it feels more like Stephen King than ASOUE. And again, that's not a bad thing. S1 is wonderful, but it's okay for a show to be dynamic like this as long as it's still a good show.

But the reason s1 had so much angst and that dark, aching feeling is because they're so isolated from each other. Over the course of all three seasons, though, the family has come closer and closer together, and that's what's been healing their individual and collective traumas. It's not that their healing has brought them together--being together is what has been causing their healing.

Also I'm a little lenient on s3 just because they had to change so much due to filming during the pandemic. However, the soundtrack was way better in the other two seasons, so there's that. The pandemic didn't cause that one.

OTP: Baker's Wife and Cinderella. Straight up, I think it would be really fun and also the whole "when you know you can't have what you want what's the profit in wishing?" vs "how can you know what you want til you get what you want and you see if you like it?" I'm just saying, their little late night heart-to-hearts could have turned into something fruity

Guilty pleasure pairing: the Witch and the Stepmother. Do they ever interact? No. Do I think it'd be super funny to pair up the only villainous women just because? Absolutely. They can start an "I was a bad mother but also I love my children with my whole heart" club and make each other worse

A pairing you want to see more: Florinda and Lucinda with Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, respectively. First of all I think it's funny that it would fulfil the whole 'good marriage' thing, but also I just think the stepsisters get a really rough deal and someone needs to get those princesses out of there before the aspiring Henry VIII's get on to their second wives

She cheated, he undervalued her at every turn, yells in her face because she just wants to help, and then has this ~wonderful realisation~ that "wow, maybe I should work with my wife!" before going straight back to his "you stay here and do nothing Because I Said So" mindset in act two. Mans has anger issues and I don't like it. Also, again, she cheated. There is no good angle to this relationship

Favourite non-romantic pair: Cinderella and the Baker. They really said "well, that was an awful lot of trauma none of us asked for. Guess we're sticking together and raising a family of two orphans and your infant son that you had with your wife (who's now dead) who cheated with my husband (who's telling people I'm dead)". Like that's so fuckin iconic.

Wait but ALSO the Witch and Rapunzel??? That's a fucking fascinating dynamic right there, like the Witch does love her! She absolutely unequivocally does! But also she doesn't know how to love her, and it is SO endlessly interesting to me and always will be

Hiiii ~ I'm good, how are you? Reading your message really warmed my heart :3 I know I'm like a broken record, but hearing people enjoy the stuff I put effort writing in makes me feel ecstatic. Take these hearts!!

Very good questions, and I had a hard time picking uke characters because I love them so much??? Interestingly, when I first started reading BL I found myself gravitating towards the seme but in recent years I like uke characters more. Tropes and trends surely change in years so it's possible that more artists started writing the type of characteristics that I love. Anyways, enough rambling and onto the recommendations!

If I had to find one characteristic that I ADORE in an uke, that would be emotional maturity. They may not be experienced romantic relationship-wise or confused/mislead depending on the situation but I love it when they are honest to themselves and their love interest/partner. Here are some recent or all-time favorites that fit this bill:

An Extremely Haphazard and Weak-willed Kiss - Koshino (desperately need that 2nd vol!!)

Tsubame's Happiness - Arima Arashi

The Farthest Love in the World - Asou Mitsuaki

As you can see... my brain fried up trying to limit the characters I love to a list! Not possible.

As for female characters in BL!

As you know, they aren't as prominent in BL for whatever reason, so it wasn't too hard to limit myself (sadly). I like that they increasingly become a part of the narrative, as a character themselves and not just for jealousy reasons! Here are my top 3:

The Insatiable Man: Jiho has two older sisters, and while at first one of them is not as likable as the other, both serve very important roles in the narrative and Jiho's journey, including their mother. I'll wither away if we don't get the 3rd season anytime soon.

Who Can Define Popularity?: There are two female characters in this story that I especially like, one of them is the friends with the main couple, and the other is the sister of the main character Siwon. This completed manhwa is a MUST READ because it's fun, it's emotional and full of goodness.

Love For Sale: I know I know, you're SO tired of me bringing up this series everytime I get an ask but what's a girl to do???? It's just THAT good! I actually adore the uke in this as well but I held back, so cut me some slack for mentioning it here. The main character Namwoo has an older sister, Eunjung. I like her not only because she's her own character, interesting and have lots to offer, her and her brother's relationship is extremely similar to what we have with my older brother. And because of that similarity, reading about their relationship was super emotional for me.

Honorable mention: They aren't exactly in the center but Traces of the Sun has two side characters that are a joy to see when they make a cameo.

Last Show: i'm rewatching the originals, i honestly could not tell you the last new tv show i consumed, closest i can get is that i recently finished a complete re-binge of all four seasons of wolf 359.

Craving: honestly just good ciabatta with some homemade mayo that my mom makes (it's more acidic than storebought because i like things acidic and we tend to eat it with asparagus). also a roast chicken.

What you are wearing right now: i'm feeling lazy cuz i'm done with school until the fall so i'm honestly in my loungewear, which is basically black cashmere sweatpants and my pajama top (it's beige).

How tall are you: 5'8.

Piercings: none, i have a horrendous pain tolerance.

Current obsession: adhd means i've got twenty thousand on a given day that are all cycling through my head at top speed and have been for at least a year, but this week it appears to be batfam (bruce wayne was little amelie's very first blorbo) and an asoue resurgence due to the recent fandom gift exchange and all the subsequent content i've been consuming.

Favorite fictional character: right now, victor frankenstein.

The last place you traveled: my family splits our time between seattle and carmel, california, and as i'm in seattle right now, that means the last place i traveled was carmel.

Hello Anon-friend! Thank you so much for the ask and for playing my Penny for Your Thoughts ask game! 💖

(Warnings: Some spoilers for ASOUE Netflix ahead)

I'm always so excited to get asked about ASOUE, and Jacquelyn is my girl! I just love her! She's honestly one of my favorite additions made by ASOUE Netflix! I really loved her immediately. She's such a strong character, and it was nice to see that there was someone remotely competent at Mulctuary Money Management. (Honestly would've never expected that 😅). I enjoyed her snark so much and her sub-plotlines were always so much fun! (The "For Secretary's Day!!" sequence is one of my favorite moments in the Netflix series).

She had some really wonderful friendships with some of the other characters too. I especially loved her interactions with Gustav and Larry and how she got to bond a little with Netflix Olivia! I wish her storyline/character arc had gotten a little better wrap up since she just sort of disappeared without a lot of explanation, but it's my understanding that that was due to production issues rather than a narrative choice still...they could've offered a little more explanation, I think.

I have a long wip about her that I started but never finished years ago before season 3 came out. It takes place in the aftermath of Gustav and that pond... (trying to avoid spoilers here 😅) and focused on her dealing with that and also on this friendship she had with Kit--based on this headcanon (AU?) I had at the time that she had spent some time as Kit Snicket's apprentice. Season 3 hadn't come out yet so it was this strange combination of Netflix canon up to that point with book canon for all the rest. It never got finished... Maybe it would be worth looking back at again but I'm not sure how I'd explain it besides calling it an AU at this point... 😅

For a Jacquelyn song, I have picked "Afterlife" by Ingrid Michaelson because I think it speaks to her determination, dedication, and resilience. Throughout the story despite the trials and tribulations she has to endure, Jacquelyn continues to believe in and fighting for a better future, and she definitely has that kind of "never give up" up attitude that underpins this song despite also being practical enough to realize that there is a lot of bad out there. I really think that, to Jacquelyn, the best act of defiance to the all the misfortune in the world is choosing to keep trying and keep living, and I think this song really captures that sentiment.

So i know youre a series person not necessarily a book person but mbs (books) have the same sorta vibe as series fo unfortunate events but as in like...asoue has ambiguous time setting and mbs has ambiguous place setting

This may be entirely unintelligible but i am just reading riddle of ages (read the first 3 books at like age 11 and only just found book 4 at the library over 10 years later. Fully did not know it existed until recently) and now my brain is mush trying to figure out what country this is meant to be set in?? The first 3 have such american vibes? It's all american spellings??? And now they're talking about brighton and the north sea and how american french doors are different to british french doors and i?????

Perhaps i am overthinking this and it is simply a case of an american author trying to write british kids but also i am so confused send help

oh absolutely! i feel like i've talked about this before but absolutely no idea where. they both have that ambiguous all/no time vibe (the show versions of both of these also have this but slightly to the left of their original source material.) and the setting feels like. the real world but to the left a bit (or in asoue's case, kind of a lot, tbh, but part of that is the time thing).

i will say as someone raised with a british parent and an american one with literature/media from both, i have no idea what would be intelligible or not intelligible to me on that front? like i have no idea what would seem like what. those things blend a bit for me. although i will say i always got the impression it was set in the us, or more accurately us adjacent, i couldn't tell you why. could very well be just bias. (i know some people argued for canada, too.)

that being said if it helps in the show it is canonically the us? it's on the adoption paperwork for baby nicholas, and then in season two they specifically mention going off to europe, as in, they are not already in europe. but you know, that doesn't guarantee the books take place in the us.

although honestly, because of the nature of it i never really try to place things like MBS or ASOUE in a literal real world context. they're more like... to me, they feel like. us inspired or adjacent, maybe, but throwing in some european or canadian or whatever shit is fine because to me it's not literal, just as it can't be placed in a literal time period. because it isn't taking place in our world (especially asoue, i think, which feels even more like just straight up another fictional world that just happens to be similar to ours in some ways) but its own setting, if that makes sense? like the question of "what year/place does mbs take place" is a pointless one to me personally, because there's no real-world correlation that's going to fit perfectly, because it's like. its own thing, its own setting, its own world.

that's not to say there's no potential value in attempting to place it in a real world correlation, it's just not something that's interested me personally because i'm happy with "yeah it takes place when it happens. where you ask? well that's easy. stonetown. where's that? idk, mbsland. what about it"
