What pet would they give MC:
Lucifer:
Lucifer wouldn’t just gift them a pet, but that pet requires the ability of homing and caring. He would gift them an aviary. Attached to this aviary would be a large enclosed area with a pair of peacocks. He selected them personally, ensuring that not only were they physically beautiful, but also that their personalities meshed well together. After all, he wants to ensure that this gift, as all other gifts he gives you, are as perfect as possible.
Mammon:
Mammon would pick a pair of his young crows and assign them to you. As they are his familiars, he can keep a watch on you no matter where you are. Crows are also resourceful and able to work out how to live no matter where they are… they do like to stay in the aviary a lot, but most often they stay in the tree within your room.
Levi:
Levi know without being told that a snake is a bad idea, look what happened with Henry 1.0… so he will get you a goldfish also. And if you want, he would get you an aquarium set up for your room.
‘What? You want Lily to be in the same tank as Henry??’
Cue happy Levi noises.
Many an evening are spent watching the two goldfish swim happily together as you hold hands and cuddle.
Satan:
Come on… do I even need to say it?
You open the box to find an adorably fluffy silver furred kitten inside with a green collar. A small heart tag hangs from her neck.
‘Diana’ you read and then giggle softly. ‘You remembered?’
You had told him about your favorite show to watch as a child, which had started as a manga. He read them all with you when he managed to get a full set for your birthday.
‘Of course I did… when the owner of the cat cafe told me he had a surprise litter he offered me first choice. When I saw her I knew.’
I mean, it could have been a unicorn, technically, but unicorns are for war. (Guy Kay fans ftw) Satan wants no part of you near a battlefield, so he hasn’t even allowed you to see his own unicorn.
Asmodeus, Beel, & Belphie:
Ok, you guys don’t hate me… but these three just aren’t animal people. Like they don’t hate animals at all… but they’re the least able to truly care for animals.
For Asmo, his priorities just aren’t there. And that’s ok. He knows his limits and is responsible enough to stay in them. He’s ok with other people’s pets as long as they stay off of him. He puts a lot into every aspect of his appearance and doesn’t want to give that up. (No hate at all for him. He know what he does and doesn’t want, and not everyone wants a pet). If you asked him for a pet, he would get you one, but he has no self-interest.
Also, his ‘animal’ is a scorpion, which horrifies him, he wouldn’t give one as a pet.
For Beel, he loves animals, especially dogs… but also has a tendency to eat animals if he goes on a rampage…he would never want to put you in a situation where he would accidentally hurt your pet.
His ‘animal’ being a fly isn’t really the kind of pet anyone wants…
For Belphie: I mean, while he’d love to get you a cow to rampage through the HoL gardens and piss Lucifer off, the truth is, he just isn’t willing/able to put that kind of effort into a pet. Instead, he’ll get you a cow plushie.
Diavolo:
Our sweet demon would get you a phoenix. He finds them absolutely fascinating, and you remind him of one, the way you always rise through any troubles in your wake.
(Dragons are not pets, but they will befriend you)
Barbatos:
He has enough on his plate without adding another pet. He’ll just assign you a Little D to take care of whatever you need while he is away.
Simeon & Luke:
This angel would gift you a pair of white doves.
They don’t get along with Mammon’s crows, so don’t let them in the aviary at the same time! Luckily they tend to avoid each other. That said, these doves are super sweet, just like the angels who gave them to you
Solomon:
No. Keep this man away from the pets. His penchant for experimenting on others is already problematic at best. Lucifer banned him from the aviary after he turned one of the peacocks into an owl and turned a crow into a mouse… it got really crazy for a few minutes.
This man is the pet, good luck us.
Hope you liked it, I wanted to keep this one light hearted.
I’m thinking of doing some more song vids, let me know what you think?

you should tell us more about tia. what's her lore?
tia is actually male (dont know who named him or why they chose the spanish word for aunt)! he's about 20-25 years old and was poached from the wild as a chick and his history is pretty unknown bc he's a black market bird. we're not sure how many homes he's had but either his first one or the one he spent the longest at (and likely multiple) were abusive and didn't know how to take care of a bird let alone a cockatoo. he can't really fly because he just never learned, and it'd be very hard to teach him now because he tends to barber his flight feathers a lot which doesn't usually mesh well with flying. he can fly very short distances and cushion a fall though. i can't remember when he came to the aviary but he's been here a while and much happier and healthier now! he doesn't like most men most likely bc he was abused by men but he does have a select few that he likes. he can be kind of a dick (it's agreed upon by pretty much everyone that he's the hardest bird to read and is very unpredictable - he doesn't show warning signs for bites very outwardly, and his tells are a little different from other birds' just because he doesn't really know how to be a bird) but he's just an absolute sweetheart to me. all he wants is to be close to the people he likes and will stay with me for hours (i usually have to coax him off me when it's time to put him back in his cage with an almond). he's so so so sweet, he'll preen my hands back and he's so gentle when he does. he might view my hands as my "face" or understand rudimentally that i use my hands in the same way he uses his mouth and treats my hands as my "head" - parrots that are friends with one another will preen each other on the head and neck to bond (body is generally reserved for mates) and he kinda treats my fingers as big feathers lmao. he was preening my face a little the other day too which tracks bc i was kissing him a lot that day lol. he's never once been aggressive or made any kind of negative motion towards me and he's pretty easy to read once you know him well. he's a citron crested cockatoo which are illegal in most markets because they're critically endangered (about 550 left in the wild when counted in 2016 i believe) which is always a little fun fact to tell visitors. he loves bruno mars

Here lies a little pocket of the multiverse, full of flora and avian life
In this lovely little alcove, lives a peculiar being. An aviary Home variant, who cares for the plants, birds, and any other creatures who stumble into its home (haha funny)
Tumblr media
They call themselves Av. A very friendly Home, akin to an average Julie in personality. Despite their outgoing personality, they don't quite get to talk very much...
Sum facts: They/it pronouns, probably smells like grass, wings are made of wire mesh and Home Goo™, has beef with cassowary's Asks come in the form of messages with this cute lil birdie :> (as of now, unnamed)
Tumblr media
[Av is NOT related to WTTMV, the Out of Bounds AU, or any of my other aus. However, that may change in the future.]

Rehabilitation
Travis Hackett x Laura Kearney
Summary: Laura feels guilty that, out of all the scars Travis has, the biggest, ugliest one is from her bite.
Post canon. Fluff. This was supposed to be a drabble but it got out of hand. (Definitely more than a little inspired by this fanart + ty @norrington-hell for the title!)
960 words
Tumblr media
Before lifting the next wooden beam, Travis mopped his forehead with a flannel sleeve, then rolled the fabric up over lean but well-muscled forearms. Laura couldn’t help but glance over—under the guise of surveying construction, of course.
Her ogling turned into—not a gasp, but the playful comment she was preparing died on her lips.
Travis’s tanned arm is spiderwebbed with pale scars, but the biggest, ugliest one is right in the middle, in the meatiest part just below the elbow. While the others are pale and flat, this one healed red, and raised in places, while dipping hollow in others, as if something had tried to tear a chunk out of him with jagged teeth.
Because something had.
Laura.
“Don’t,” Travis said gravely.
She realized she was staring, and not being subtle about it, either.
“It wasn’t your fault.”
“Sorry,” she said, quickly finding somewhere else to put her eyes.
They landed on the organized piles of lumber, wire mesh, and tools that would become the newest aviary for the North Kill Wildlife Rescue and Sanctuary. Max had wanted to call it the Rescue Association for Wildlife Rehabilitation for the funny acronym, but Laura said calling it RAWR made it sound like an AOL Instant Messenger anime chatroom. Then Max said she was insane for going back to Hackett’s Quarry and he wasn’t going to help her get killed. She said she didn’t want him there anyway. And that was that.
Going back wasn’t as strange as it sounded.
Travis and Laura were a team. Maybe he had stolen a summer of her life and left her with scars the werewolf infection couldn’t heal as easily as a missing eye. Maybe she had killed his niece, mother, brother, and gotten his only surviving family thrown in prison. But for that one night, they had been an unstoppable team.
They stood together under the full moon and ended a curse.
So when Travis invited her to use his family’s land to open the wildlife rescue she had always dreamed about, it felt right for them to partner up again. After the bloodbath of that summer, and with no one left to run it, the camp closed its doors. But Hackett’s Quarry still had so much space—acres and acres of pristine forested landscape, with unused buildings in various states of repair.
When she saw him again for the first time in four years, SUV tires crunching on gravel as she parked in front of the run-down lodge, he waved, and his smile lit up so brightly Laura hardly recognized him.
Travis must have been so alone with all that space to himself. It’s too much for one person. And the taxes didn’t pay for themselves… unless it became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
The wildlife rescue was a mutually beneficial arrangement.
“Really,” Travis said. “It’s fine. Six years hunting werewolves, I’ve got plenty of scars. You know how it is working with dangerous critters.”
“Still…” She placed her palm over his scar without even thinking, and sighed.
Goosebumps ran up his arms at her touch, and didn’t stop until they were zipping up and down his spine.
He said it was fine, but that wasn’t what he meant.
The truth was, of all the scars he carried, the deep, red, mangled one on his forearm was his favorite.
If his arms had shocked Laura to silence, he trembled to think what her reaction to the rest of him might be. There were twelve full moons per year, times six years, times three cursed family members. Do the math.
He didn’t have to mess up often. Just once too slow with the needle, too gentle with the restraints. Add to that his appendix scar, the time he’d hit himself in the leg with an ax when he and Chris were kids running around the camp collecting firewood… Normal life stuff. It all added up. Live as long as he had, you end up with scars. Live with werewolves for six of them, and…
His family had always lashed out at him with their claws. At the time, he’d felt lucky—he never got infected, so he could always remain the one to take care of them. Protect them during the full moon. That was his job as the big brother.
But the scar Laura gave him was different than all the others.
He thought it was luck, until he felt Laura’s fangs sink into his flesh. Then a small voice in the back of his head, one he’d almost forgotten, sighed: “Finally.”
Finally, a wolf wasn’t trying to rend him with claws meant to eviscerate and kill. She wasn’t trying to kill him.
Finally, someone wanted him to join their pack.
No matter how far away she traveled, he could look at his arm and think of her. Part of her was always with him, her bite indelibly etched into his body as deeply as the mark she left on his soul.
He covered his teammate’s hand with his own and squeezed. Her eyes widened, as if suddenly becoming aware that she had been touching him now that he was mirroring her intimacy. An adorable tint colored her cheeks. She didn’t pull away.
“Quit yer dawdling and grab the nail gun. Haven’t got all day.” He gave her a light shove.
She snorted with surprise then marched off toward the power tools bench, twisting as she went to throw him a mocking salute. “Aye aye, officer dickwhippet!” She grinned.
The nickname made his lips want to curl into a scowl, but he’d learned that sometimes when Laura insulted people in that way, it wasn’t actually to insult them, but to indicate they were close friends.
He let her.

It’s going in an ask because it’s going to be too long for tags. I hyperfixated on pet birds like… last year I think.
Going to specifically be speaking a lot about parrots because they’re the ones I know the most about and because the peach-faced lovebird in the article is a parrot (the article keeps talking about “resembling” a peach-faced lovebird and not just?? Being one? I don’t know if that’s a weird language thing but anyway.
Reasons why the cell is bad:
NO PERCHES! Nowhere to fly and land and climb (parrots especially often love to climb using their feet and beak). Did you know dowel stick perches are really bad for birds because they’re flat and have no variety and so the feet don’t get sufficient exercise and that leads to developing bumble-foot (where the feet get really swollen and bumpy).
BREAD??? Who feeds a parrot bread??? You shouldn’t feed birds bread in general but if you do it’s recommend to only be in small quantities because of the high sodium content and low nutritional value, and it should be whole grain and brown bread. TWO WHOLE SLICES OF WHITE BREAD for a bird that small?? The bird can barely fit in a hand like come on there’s more bread than bird in that cell.
No toys!! Birds need a lot more enrichment than people think (seriously I am so so mad about the birds as low-maintenance pets that can be kept for decoration opinion that’s so widely spread) and there is NONE in there. Parrots especially are also quite destructive and they love to destroy things for fun so toys should be able to be “used up” by the bird (via tearing and chewing and generally just being obliterated) so plastic toys Don’t Work. Natural materials are also preferred because plastic and rubber is very bad when digested (obviously). So stuff like tweed and sticks and branches and dry grass and stuff all good. You can put seeds and other food in some of them so that the bird has to dig or forage for it which is good for them because it’s a natural behaviour that they still retain (did you know parrots aren’t fully domesticated yet. Not even close. So they still retain a lot of those instincts and especially prey instincts which leads them to fly when threatened and be generally scared of people so that you have to earn their trust first before you can actually do anything because you are huge and they are so small and so scared. Anyway)
I’m still mad about the bread. Anyway. Seeds are also pretty bad for one birds, especially if it’s all they’re eating. They have a very high fat content and because the pet bird is not flying many many miles a day to burn all that off it just sits there and often becomes fatty liver disease. This is probably one of the biggest contributing factors that makes up that “pet birds have very short lifespans” nonsense, because people don’t feed their bird right and don’t get it enough exercise. Also the smaller the cage the more time the bird needs to spend out of it, to get the right amount of exercise and enrichment. A lot of people just don’t let their birds out of the cage ever??? Fucked up. The only time you’d maybe justify keeping the bird in the cage for its whole life would be if you have a literal huge aviary with a cage the size of a room, and even then you should still let it out occasionally to actually experience like. The outside. (Did you know you get bird harnesses. Like the ones for cats but for birds. So that you can take the bird outside without it flying away). And also some people section off their backyard with mesh around it so that the bird can have the whole garden without the danger of flying away. You can also train your bird to fly back to you even when outside but that’s more difficult so I’m not gonna go on about that here.
I’m just so confused as to why people would get a pet that can fly if they don’t want their pet to fly. Like come on. What’s the point. And flight training is so so cool and so rewarding. Your pet can FLY and you’re not going to let them?? You don’t want a little bird to come from the other side of the room and sit on your shoulder or up onto your hand like you’re an adventurer with a falcon for a best friend?
Whatever. I’m so mad that I can’t have a bird. They’re also probably the most loyal pets on the planet once you bond with them. Birds actually automatically favour one person over everyone else (you have to be careful that you don’t tip thst 60/40 scale into 100/0 if you don’t want the bird to attack everyone that comes near you. Insane) and you are their best friend if you only have one bird. A lot of birds are also really cuddly (I don’t know about lovebirds but I think they can be? Conures especially are (green-cheeked specifically because that’s the bird I was looking into)) and they can be very vocal and make little trills (ahhhh) and chirps. But they can also scream. Most birds are so so noisy (ESPECIALLY sun conures and macaws. Oh my god. They just screech all day I would die I think).
…Most pet birds (especially parrots) cannot be fed a seed-only diet. Birds can eat fruit, vegetables, berries, nuts and seeds (as treats), grains… other stuff that I’m forgetting… And they should be fed regularly, like two or three times a day. And their water also has to be changed regularly because they poop in it (especially if it’s low in the cage. Same with food ideally you should put the food higher up and not under any higher perches).
Some birds (thinking of African greys and macaws) do this thing called eye-pinning where they dilate and contract their pupils really fast to show that they’re interested in something (I think it can also show when they’re angry? Can’t remember) and it’s very cute. You can use it for taste-testing foods for the bird to see if they like it (birds have preferences. Some really hate sunflower seeds but love macadamia nuts and some are neutral towards them but hate almonds etc etc).
Birds are also really sensitive to the air they breathe! Humans have very strong lungs and we can survive a lot without even noticing but birds can’t. Anything that damages air quality can kill them really quickly if you’re not careful (I suspect it’s another contributor to the “pet birds have short lifespans” thing because people don’t know what killed them when in reality it was like. The dust). Cockatiels are very dusty birds (wing dust) and they usually need an air purifier in the room to keep the air clean (and also you probably shouldn’t get a cockatiel if you have a dust allergy). Scented candles can be dangerous to birds because they often burn oil, except for Yankee Candles which is apparently bird safe because they don’t use oil (did spend a lot of time verifying this, apparently one of the employees sent an email saying they have a pet cockatiel and regularly burn scented candles around it and the bird is fine so. But still). There’s also a type of cookware that’s extremely deadly to birds because it releases a chemical whenever it’s scraped that can kill them instantly so bird owners have to watch out for stuff like that.
Most houseplants are also very toxic to birds. You have to be very careful when letting your bird out and should never leave your bird unsupervised because of stuff like that, because one bite of a leaf can kill them. Parrots are generally tougher than smaller birds but they’re still very delicate.
The bird cage should also be cleaned regularly, including the bars of the cage. Removable trays at the bottom are good because then you can do it easily and just replace the newspaper or bedding and whatever. Perches should also be cleaned. Did you know bird poop doesn’t actually have a smell and if it does that means something’s probably wrong. Also have to inspect poop for signs of illness (which is why the newspaper is a good option so that you can actually see it properly).
Cages should also preferably be square (and MUCH larger than the stupid little Tweety Bird round cages). Round cages are awful for birds it makes them anxious when there are no corners to hide in. You know like how round tanks are bad for fish, it’s a similar thing. Your bird should be able to fly at least a little bit in the cage from perch to perch. If you’re at work regularly so you can’t let your bird out for most of the day then you need a big cage. And probably another bird to keep your bird company. They’re very social creatures. Cage should also be sturdy and off the ground, especially if you have other pets (dogs, cats) because they might try to knock over the cage. You have to also acclimate your dog or cat to be around the bird safely but you have to be VERY careful with that because it’s still a prey animal and your cat/dog are still predators and are going to want to kill the bird. I don’t really trust anything that says the cat/dog and bird are 100% besties because there’s still a very real chance your pet will just snap and kill them either accidentally or on purpose (once again birds are very delicate). If you’re flight training your bird you need to be especially careful because often the flapping of wings can set the pet off. I’ve seen some people keep their other pet in a cage while the bird does flight training so that they can get them used to seeing it so that they don’t get spooked.
…I have more but this is enough I think. Apologies I just really like birds and this info has given me nothing except the response of getting irrationally angry whenever I see a pet bird in an unhealthy living situation.
whao‼️‼️
i really want a pet pigeon (based on a love founded by another bird hyperfixation) but i haven’t actually done any research into keeping birds because i know realistically i can’t get one for years to come, at least, and i didn’t want to learn all about them as pets only to not be able to get one cause that would make me sad (so i learnt all about them in the wild and in history lol)
this is really interesting though, i did not know parrots were so sensitive. i mean i knew theyre hugely mistreated pets and it’s very hard to keep one alive and happy but i figured it wasn’t like. that hard, idk.
very thanks for the bird infodump!! it was really fascinating :3

Shops & Activities in Menzoberranzan's districts:
THE BRAERYN:
The Wan Hag
Information Broker
During the Time of Troubles era and the beginning of the War of the Spider Queen, an information broker named Smylla Nathos operated in the Braeryn. A human, she captured the attention of a drow slaver aid on the surface world and returned to Menzoberranzan as something more than a slave and less than an honored guest of House Faen Tlabbar. For a time, she used her skill as a sorcerer and diviner-as well as her drow like poise, charm, and ruthlessness to serve as an advisor to Matron Ghenni'tiroth. But when she fell ill, and healing magic failed to offer remedy, her sickness was viewed as a curse inflicted by Lolth.
Escaping assassination by her former benefactors, Smylla fled to the Braeryn to eke out a new life among the dregs of drow society. Although her illness left her withered and weak, the Wan Hag, as she came to be known, employed her eldritch talents to cobble together a formidable web of informants and spies. However, by the beginning of the War of the Spider Queen, her illness had robbed her even of her divination talents, and she was soon killed by Ryld Argith.
Quaggoth Drool
Tavern
The Stench streets is notorious for its déclassé “drinking pits" those crude establishments where drow of every station go to forget about caste and rank for a few hours, guzzle raw spirits, and watch lesser creatures slaughter one another in bloody contests. One such place is the Quaggoth Drool. As is common inn such pits, revelers must surrender all weapons when they enter the tavern. Then they can get as drunk as they want, shout, argue, talk, and have a good fight. Priestesses often use magic to eavesdrop in such ruinous places, listening for treachery, plans for attacks on houses, or other business being discussed. The entertainment focuses on the sunken arena at the center of the common room where patrons wager heavily on brutal and often lethal pit matches.
DUTHCLOIM:
The Cathlyre
Exotic Bird Aviary
Anchored to a sweeping battlement of stalactites along the Clawrift's easternmost perimeter is a spectacular latticework enclosure crafted of basalt support beams and a mesh of calcified webbing. Within the free flight structure, soar countless types of avians from the World Above, including many exotic species (among them the namesake peacock-like cathlyre). From the large shop, perched along the ledge of the Clawrift, the birds are sold as pets, live targets, or roasted alive before the customer's eyes-a hot meal seasoned and done to order.
Rhauvais' Arms
Munitions Supplier
Proprietor Rhauvais del'Ygana, a tall and strong female drow, specializes in discreet manufacture and sale of exotic, high-quality ranged weapons and ammunition for her noble clientele. Specialty armaments of her design include “the spinagon” (a repeating hand crossbow), "the kocrachon” (a hovering, envenomed, dart-like projectile that strikes upona triggered condition), and "the hamatula” (a basilisk-hide bandolier that magically recalls any dagger thrown from its pockets); all are named after devils of the Nine Hells.
The Bazaar
The ever-changing, never-sleeping Bazaar is the commercial heart of Menzoberranzan. This circle of bare bedrock about 750 feet in diameter is a crowded, untidy labyrinth of stalls and hagglers. The ongoing trade fair attracts merchants and goods from all over Faerûn, and the drow go there to buy and sell almost everything imaginable.
Warriors training at the Academy patrol the Bazaar heavily. The patrols are performed to keep a lid on the violence, but they do not interfere with haggling, arguments, or fraudulent dealing. The merchants suffer the patrols to keep the house nobles in line. The Ruling Council maintains the patrols to prevent giving the merchants a reason to hire large numbers of guards that could grow into private armies.
By decree of the Ruling Council, the Bazaar contains no permanent structures. No stall can remain in one spot longer than 66 days. The law is intended to keep the Bazaar from dwindling away aspermanent buildings replace the stalls. Also, the constant shuffling forces buyers to tour the Bazaar, searching for favored stalls or merchants.
Fights and covert sabotage are common since vendors jostle for more space for their booths or try to avoid being relegated to a bad location. While merchants are not allowed to openly sell their space at the Bazaar, wise merchants arrange to trade spots with other established vendors for favors.
Merchants of all races and lands are welcome in the Bazaar, and shoppers can get almost anything they desire in its curtained booths and stalls, given enough patience and money. The stalls carry goods and services that range from the mundane to the wondrous. Tailors, potters, and crafters of every stripe can be found in the twisting paths of the Bazaar. Surgeons, potions, and herbal medicines can also be found there by those who want to avoid seeking healing from the priestesses of Lolth. Some vendors even sell wines, cheeses, and other exotics from the surface lands, and one is able to send and receive messages to and from the world above.
Living commodities can also be purchased in the Bazaar, and many drow go there to hire mercenaries and outlander wizards. While slaves can be bought there, most purchasers looking for such goods go to the Braeryn to fill those needs.
Bhaelundryn's Bestiary
Underdark Hostler
Heavily guarded by a dozen drow guards and gnoll overseers, this stall provides pack lizards and riding-lizard mounts, including the harnesses, goads, leadlines, and carrying frames for the creatures. VhurnBhaelundryn, an old, fat, affable, and heavilyscarred drow warrior, always has one of each sort oflizard harnessed and ready, but the cost is astronomical The fee does include immediate help from the overseers, however, in delaying pursuit, patrols, and anything up to angry high priestesses. In addition tobeasts, Vhurn sells "underdark packs" for adventur-ing in the Underdark and is knowledgeable about places to buy other gear and weapons.
Dhode's Fine Piwafwis
Tailor and Clothier
Dhode Lu’orz is a tailor who sells all manner of clothing cut in drow fashions, but he specializes in making piwafwis. He staffs this stall with six apprentices who he treats as little more than slaves. Dhode has a number of contacts in Sorcere willing to add enchantments to a piwafwi if the price is right.
Quild's Mobile Parlor
Information Broker
This stall is little more than a bench and a cart full of cheap trinkets. Quild, a wiry, muscled male drow, moves his cart and bench regularly to follow shifts in traffic around the Bazaar. He engages non-drow and other males with nonstop chatter while he works but is quiet and submissive before female drow. Quild is an excellent source for rumors and gossip, and he can give direction to most locales in and around the city. Of course, generous tips greatly enhance the accuracy of the information.
Sense of Sensuous Scents
Perfumery
The mixture of scents wafting on the light breeze of Menzoberranzan ensures that shoppers smell this stall long before they see it. Rauva Zoldyth, a female drow, sells a wide variety of incense, from bricks that burn in braziers to sticks that smolder slowly. She also sells oils and candles, most of which are treated to burn with a low eldritch-colored flame that won't hurt sensitive drow eyes. Rauva notes which priestesses buy what incense and how much, and discreetly sells this information to those who might be interested in knowing what houses are preparing certain rituals.
Shimmerdark's Decanter
Vintner & Alchemist
Named for its handsome, charming (and smart-mouthed) young drow proprietor, this stall stocks rare and fine potables from all over the Realms. Daelein Shimmerdark carries a wide selection, from fortified wines of the Sword Coast to hard liquors made by the dwarves. Daelein offers love potions and sleep poison to rich and discreet shoppers. For a small fee,he will also provide directions on the best places to sell stolen goods.
Whispers in the Dark
Courier
A human wizard named Fethlorn Kelapanch set up shop in the Bazaar late in the Spellplague era, specializing in delivering messages around the city. Young drow commoners, especially orphans, camp outside his stall, waiting for a chance to run a message and make a few coins. Fethlorn also has connections with many caravan masters and can arrange for messages to be delivered to far-off locations in the Underdark or even to the surface. He can also arrange for messengers to run the missive directly, but this is ruinously expensive. A number of spells and rituals for magical communication are at his disposal, allowing him to contact virtually anyone in Faerûn, including in the World Above.
EASTMYR:
Battered Beholder
Arms and Hardware
The inside of this weapons shop is almost as battered as the beholder (said to be Many Eyes) on the sign at the store front. The inventory varies widely from day to day.and the shop fences goods with no questions asked. A male dwarf named Olask Dhauluin runs the Beholder. Olask came to Menzoberranzan shortly after the War of the Spider Queen and remains there throughout the Spellplague era, which is a good indicator of his caution and deviousness. Olask lives in the floors above the shop, using monsters to guard it during non-business hours, when they are allowed to roam freely.
Calask's Hands
Hairstylist
This hair salon is named for the male human who founded the business during the Sable Years, Myrlyth Calask. His shop survived him, passing to a male drow commoner named Filraen after the War of the Spider Queen. The clientele claims that Filraen's delicate drow fingers are much better than Calask's, but Filraen keeps the name because of its novelty, which attracts customers. Filraen is secretly a spy for Bregan D'aerthe. He relays messages to other agents and reports on what he overhears. He never takes any action that could expose his cover.
Darkled Depths
Tavern
Located across from the abandoned House Kenaf incompound is the Darkled Depths, one of the most popular taverns in the city. The depth is a higher-class establishment than the drinking pits, though it does admit non-drow. It is renowned for its glowing drinks made from phosphorescent lichen and a wide variety of stuffed mushrooms. The tavern fills four floors carved from the interior of a stalagmite. One wide winding stair connects the floors, but several open locations allow drow to levitate from one floor to another. In addition to music and singing, the depths' features shadow plays performed on an illuminated canvas. The owner is a commoner drow female named Kialara, who oversees an almostentirely male staff.
Dylchanta's Furfeathers
Massage House
The best massage house in Eastmyr, Dylchanta's Furfeathers regularly hosts massage parties for large groups. The parlor is run by Dylchanta, a female drow commoner, who is assisted by a staff of a dozen masseuses evenly split between genders. Dylchantahas no aspirations for nobility, only for the wealth as successful business can bring and the influence that wealth can buy. Some in Eastmyr whisper that she ensures that Furfeathers remains the only good massage house in Eastmyr through threats and violence, but nothing has ever been proven. Her principal clients are members of House Hunzrin, but on any given day, members of any of the lesser houses and common families can be found there.
Narbondel's Shadow
Rooming House
Narbondel's Shadow is one of the two surviving rooming houses that cater to non-drow visitors in the city. Narbondel's Shadow is very expensive, but the service is excellent. Rates include all meals, basic drink, stabling, and a private room with a magical light source. A human adventurer named Morl founded the rooming house shortly before the Time of Troubles. He left the place to his son, but in the late Spellplague era, it is run by a halfling named Dalfred Noakes.
Dalfred had a violent encounter with a young Hunzrin noble, which left him scarred and without his left ear. He has never forgotten or forgiven the noble. To this day, he makes full use the rooming house's prime location overlooking the Clawrift, and a connected small cave system that does not join up with Dark Dominion, to smuggle goods and hide people fleeing angry drow nobles. Dalfred also has contacts throughout Eastmyr and Braeryn for clients looking to discreetly hire or purchase needed magic, healing, weapons, and other gear. He plays a dangerous game that will likely get him killed in the near future.
NARBONDELLYN:
Red Tears
Cartel of Gem-Cutters & Moneylenders
Red Tears is a secretive consortium of lesser merchants that have banded together against the most conspicuous and haughty merchant houses of Menzoberranzan. This cartel of “dealers in the shadows”was formed in the Year of the Vitriolic Sage (1047DR) by a sardonic one-eyed drow known as Farseeing Phurn. Phurn is credited by those in the know for fomenting the bitter rivalry between prominent gem-cutting Houses Belek'tyr and Shadalun-a feud that has resulted in countless assassinations and significant loss of profits over the decades. Today, Red Tears is an expansive criminal organization with a coterie of smugglers, fences, racketeers, thugs, and cut throats operating throughout much of the city. Phurn governs his illicit empire from his compound in central Narbondellyn, carved from the ruins of House Tuin'Tarl. The organization takes its name from a rare teardrop-shaped gemstone of unusually-vivid, blood-crimson hue in Phurn's possession.
Brothers Jaszarr
Perfumers
Narbondellyn is home to the wealthiest (and most expensive) perfumers in the city. In the crowded, damp underground, perfuming is an art born of necessity. The best drow scents mingle with less desirable smells to mute everything into a pleasurable background. The brothers Dhellorn and Dirziir Jaszarr are together regarded as the finest purveyors of perfume in the city. Sold only to the finest drow of high society, their scents are woven with magical compulsions that make them more than simple cosmetics. In the right hands, such a perfume is the key to power and influence-two of every drow's favorite things. Unknown to all but a discreet clientele, the talents of the brothers Jaszarr extend to the crafting of toxic potions and ointments as well. For a hefty sum, these poisons-often seamlessly blended into their exotic perfumes-can cripple or slay a rival with little chance of detection.
Feathered Masqueax
Theater and Festhall
Unlike most playhouses in the city, which stage low-brow comedies, the Feathered Masqueax prides itself on hosting only innovative, well-acted dramas. Mostastonishing for revelers in attendance is the fact that many of the actors in the troupe are, in fact, undead; Their performances flawless and eerily lifelike. At show's end, privileged clientele are welcomed back-stage to enjoy food, libations, and the company of performers they fancy.
The owner and proprietor of the theatre company is an enigmatic male drow named Phaless. Nearly seven feet tall and always shrouded in a dark, blood-splattered robe resembling a funeral shroud, Phaless strikes an imposing figure. A tiny animated skeleton pendant pinned to his robe reveals to those in the know that the drow is a deathsinger, a rare bardic practitioner renowned for songs of dark glory and necromancy.
Black Sapphire Bath
Public Bathhouse
One of a dozen public baths scattered about the city, the Black Sapphire Bath is primarily a gathering place for males seeking to rid themselves of a day's sweat and grime, not to mention a place to socialize and relax in leisurely comfort away from the over-bearing presence of females. Patrons can be bathed by servants or left alone as they wish. Many fires keep the octagonal pools warm, its steaming mineral water scented with a choice of fragrances. Although not a festhall, there are no rules against guests enjoying more amorous activities with each other or with the bathing staff if additional coin is forthcoming.
WEST WALL:
Elstearn's Escorts
Hireling Agency
As one of the few businesses that has flourished in West Wall, Elstearn's Escorts provides carte-blanch services of intelligent, well-groomed, and attractive drow of either gender to its discerning clientele. Although some clients avail themselves of the agency for simple carnal pleasures, the escort service's pool of diverse hirelings has a wide variety of skillsets useful to Menzoberranyr social climbers. Many are hired as well-spoken and charismatic escorts for social functions; others as guides and interpreters of outlanders visiting the city. Some even seek out Elstearn's Escorts for well-trained bodyguards when business takes them to dangerous parts of the city or for quick excursions into the surrounding Underdark.
Xeva's Den
Gaming Pavilion & Tavern
The common room of this drinking establishment offers its discerning patrons a quiet place to enjoy a relaxing game of sava, table dice (backgammon), or oldmen's bones (pick-up sticks). Gamers looking to make wagers can do so in Xeva's private rooms. Elderboy Aumon Baenre is a frequent guest at Xeva's, sometimes gambling away hundreds of platinum in an evening.

Storm Hawks Writing Workshop Entry
*kicks the door down* IT'S HERE!!! Holy shit this took too long!
Here's my entry for @grimm-the-6th's writing workshop. A day in the life oneshot focused on my character Quiz Pharo.
I had a lot of fun with this despite the roadblocks. It's been ages since I last wrote proper fanfic and it shows, but hey, this got the words flowing and I'm looking forward to the next one.
Word Count - 1531
“Good morning, dearest.”
The day started, like most, with a mug of coffee and a kiss from his wife. A slow and easy morning of feeding the birds in his aviary breakfast before going to make some for himself. Quiz Pharo considered himself to be a man of simple needs.
“How was your father this week?” he asked over eggs and toast. Patricias was leaning on the kitchen counter opposite him, contentedly sipping on a blood bag.
“He’s doing well,” Patricias remarked. “A little restless, but who isn’t at his age?”
“Of course,” Quiz nodded, knowing that with his father-in-law, ‘restless’ could mean anything from wanting to hold a spontaneous fencing tournament to wanting to feast on every mortal he could get his teeth into for the next few nights.
“I also got a gift for you,” Patricias purred sweetly.
“Did you now?” Quiz asked in mock surprise. It wasn’t surprising at all; Patricias loved to share the finer things in life with him. But they did both love to play up the theatrics. “Oh darling, you shouldn’t have.”
The merb grinned and sauntered round towards him, “But I wanted to, sweetness. And I couldn’t resist when I saw these. You’ve been working so hard, and they go so perfectly with your eyes.”
“You’re torturing me with the suspense, love.”
Chuckling, Patricias drew out the black jewellery box she’d been hiding behind her back. It was leather, with a crest embossed into the middle in gold to match the clasps, and she opened it to reveal a set of shimmering red pearls. A necklace, bracelet, earrings and a brooch all gleamed up at him.
Quiz’s eyes went wide, “Are these..?”
“Blood pearls from Aquinos, yes,” Patricias crooned, “From father’s newest contact in the Mareenas. I’d like to see these in your family’s collection.”
“They’re beautiful.”
“And they’ll be beautiful on you.”
“I’m sure; you have excellent taste. I look forward to trying them on, but first; you need some sleep.”
“But darling,” Patricias protested.
“We have dinner reservations,” Quiz reminded her. He gently took the box from her hands and kissed her. “I like seeing you look your best, but I love seeing you feel your best first and foremost. I’ll wear these tonight, now go and rest.”
Patricias relented and drew back. “Okay then. You have a good morning now.”
“Sweet dreams. I’ll see you tonight.”
There was a smile on Quiz’s face as he watched Patricias leave for bed. When she was gone, he tidied up the kitchen before going back to the aviary and going through to one of the side rooms. One with a door emblazoned with Cyclonia’s insignia.
The room he entered was much like any other ‘quarantine’ room in which he kept any new arrivals to the aviary, however built for just a single occupant. One large, floor-to-ceiling enclosure decked out in live flora, branches and feeding platforms. Rushing water from the faux-rock fountains filled the air with a peaceful aura, and bright early morning sunlight filtered in through the greenhouse-glass ceiling.
“It is quite lovely here, isn’t it?” he asked, smiling lightly, “You know, sometimes even I never want to leave.”
The response he got came in the form of a baneful screech, “Piss off!”
Quiz dropped the smile. “Come on now. There’s no need for that language. We’re civilised gentlemen, are we not?”
The bird in centre enclosure – a comically small, chubby buzzard with heavy white patterning across its face. How fitting – scowled at him with beady brown eyes, feathers fluffed up in agitation.
“Whatever you’ve done to me, undo it right now!” it shouted, and clumsily flapped towards Quiz to rattle the mesh barrier with its beak. It moved like it didn’t quite know what to do with its own body. “Turn me back, this is humiliating!”
“I’m afraid I can’t do that yet, Hermund,” Quiz said, shaking his head. “Not until you tell me what your squadmates are planning with your latest shift in tactics this past week.”
“So you can send that information off to Cyclonia? Fat chance,” Hermund spat. Quiz was only half-listening, more interested in how a Blusterian accent somehow managed to translate across into the pee-yow! shrieks of a common buzzard. Or perhaps that was just how his own mind translated the angry calls. “What kind of interrogation is this anyway?”
“One I’m sure you’d much prefer to the ‘conventional’ forms,” Quiz said without looking at his ‘guest’. “Believe me, there’s far worse people you could’ve been sent to than me. This might be ‘humiliating’, but at least it’s temporary. Provided you tell me what I’m after.”
“I’m not telling you anything.”
“I hear that a lot. It’s astounding how often it’s proven false.”
Hermund scowled at him and grit his beak shut. Mottled wings drew up to his ears, making Quiz raise an eyebrow.
“You’re pouting?” he asked. “Really?”
“No!”
“Quite unbecoming for the eldest member of the Buff Buzzards, no?”
“I’m not pouting!”
“If you say so. I’m afraid I do have to get going, there’s other guests I need to take care of. Don’t forget to eat your food, it’s right there.”
The man turned bird seemed surprised at those words. He hadn’t noticed Quiz sliding a tray of eggs and meat into the enclosure through a sliding panel.
“You’re feeding me?” he asked.
“Of course,” Quiz said, shrugging like it was completely obvious. “This isn’t a torture chamber. I treat all my residents the same; I feed them, house them, make sure they’re able to live comfortably for the duration of their stay. Think of it like a hotel.”
“Hotels let their guests leave whenever they want.”
“Hotels also take payment. Yours just so happens to be battle tactics.”
“Get bent, Cyclonian scum.”
He couldn’t help but laugh, “Been there, done that. I’ll be back later with dinner. Do make yourself at home. Or don’t.”
With that, he left the room, locking the door firmly behind him.
------
It was mid-afternoon when Quiz came back to Hermund’s room with more food for the man. Said buzzard was currently perched on a branch in the middle of the enclosure. He’d clearly been waiting for him.
“Are you going to cooperate?” Quiz asked, though he got the feeling Hermund wouldn’t. Not today. “The sooner you tell me what I want, the sooner you can go home.”
“Who are you?” Hermund demanded.
Quiz shrugged, “It was worth a shot. Here, I have dinner.”
Yellow eyes scowled at him while he slid the food into the enclosure.
“Y’know, not everyone can talk to birds,” the buzzard said.
“I know. That’s why Cyclonia hires my services.”
“And they say someone who could was responsible for Cyclonia’s invasion of Merbia.”
At that, Quiz couldn’t help but smile with a knowing glint in his eyes.
“Did they now? And who’s ‘they’?”
“Some merbs. Refugees who got a good long look at the culprit.” Hermund’s eyes narrowed in thought. “It was you, wasn’t it? You were the one who leaked the intel on Merbia’s defences.”
“I knew you’d figure it out quickly Hermund,” Quiz congratulated, giving the bird some mocking applause. “Your file did say you were one of the sharpest of your squad.”
“Why?” Hermund asked, voice dripping with venom. “Merbia’s done nothing to anyone, they’re too scared. What did you have to gain from selling them out?”
“Cyclonia paid for it,” Quiz replied with a shrug. “A much better price than whatever the Free Atmos would’ve offered, too. Do you think this place runs on appreciation and well-wishes? I worked hard to make this aviary into a sanctuary and a learning space.”
“For Cyclonia?”
“Yes, for Cyclonia.”
Hermund was pacing now; waddling back and forth along the perch with confused agitation. Quiz could practically hear the gears turning in his head.
“You’ve got an avian tongue,” he muttered. “You turned me into this.”
“A common buzzard. I found it fitting.”
“Hush! There’s only one group of people capable of that, and their means to do so was stolen by…”
The bird stopped and slowly turned to look at Quiz, slackjawed. There was practically an audible ‘click!’ as the pieces fell into place for him.
“You. You’re that thieving bastard prince from Amazonia!”
“Rude, but not incorrect,” Quiz replied with a nod. Hermund gave an enraged screech and flung himself at the metal barrier between them both.
“Treacherous scumbag! All this because you lost a throne?!”
“Oh I never wanted the throne. Though I’m a little concerned about who’s next in line for it. My sister is quite unpleasant.”
“You’re sick.”
“I think you’ll find I’m perfectly healthy.”
“…Why tell me this?” Hermund growled, “Why let me figure this out? It won’t get me to tell you anything.”
“Oh but it will,” Quiz said with an innocent smile. “See, now you’re at a fork in the path. You can tell me nothing and selflessly protect your squadron, but at the cost of your freedom, your humanity and the chance to tell the Buzzards what they’re up against. Or you can cave in and trade information for your freedom.”
Hermund didn’t say a word.
“I’ll let you think about it. Goodnight, Hermund.”
----
Did I make Hermund up on the fly for this? Yes. Yes I did. Was it fun? Absolutely, and now my brain is taking off with the desire to flesh him out some more.
Also yes! Quiz and Patricias (my dracula parrot character) are married! I don't think I ever revealed that here on Tumblr.

Is there any reason not to build an outdoor aviary for my parrotlet for the summertime? Provided that the cage can be secured from predators (of which we have very few in the area). Summer is usually when our human lives are less indoors around the parrotlet 24/7 so I just would like to give him as much space as possible for further enrichment possibilities (but of course still spend plenty of time together).
There's some risks with outdoor aviaries, one more recent example would be the breakout of avian influenza in wild bird populations. If you get a lot of wild birds in the area there is a higher risk of them contracting it while outside in their aviary.
Otherwise you're looking at things like stress and escape risk. Making sure the bars are thin enough for a tiny parrotlet, dual door entrances, non-toxic materials, properly set up ground (usually you dig down and place a layer of mesh so that critters can't dig under the aviary). Some captive parrots are very nervous and stressy, so even with the best aviary setup it's very possible that traffic, wildlife, wind and neighbours could be too stressful for them to feel safe. Proper environmental introductions can help but again, some birds can be too nervous to thrive in an aviary environment.
Also I wouldn’t recommend leaving them in an aviary unattended. All it takes is one predator or one little critter to cause a lot of damage, there’s also a lot of horror stories of people’s birds being stolen from their cages when left on patios alone for short periods of time.
There's always risks to weigh, just depends on what your bird and your area is like!

[Image ID: A photograph, taken through aviary mesh, of a pair of pigeons inside a loft. One of them is a white old german owl pigeon, the other is a grey turkish tumbler. They are laying, very relaxed, around a small, brightly coloured xylophone. End ID]
so, my camera is still broken, so i have not been taking many photos, however, i borrowed a phone to take this quick shot of the birds (Seagull and Pigeon) not understanding how to use their new toy, right before i went out to wash the loft because, you guys, the poops that pigeons do when they’re sitting on eggs are disgusting. no one prepared me.
the four eggies have been swapped for pingpong balls (and candled to verify that they are unfertilised) and are still being cared for by all three birds, although they have some sort of hinge thing going on, because Pigeon is only allowed in the nest when Seagull is in it- Sparrow chases her off. Seagull, you slut.
the birds have been enjoying the winter weather- as soon as it starts raining they run out to bathe, or stand on the most exposed perches and get really sodden. during a recent storm, Seagull found a spot under a broken gutter that absolutely pelted her with water and stood under the waterfal like a swimsuit model. comfortable!

Bournemouth aviary criticised as you can't see the birds

Bournemouth aviary criticised as you can't see the birds
Tumblr media
Visitors to a brand new aviary that cost more than £400,000 have branded it a ‘waste of public money’ because they cannot see inside it.
The large dome which is home to 200 exotic rescue birds is supposed to offer a ‘360 degree viewing experience’.
But it has been built using a double layered metal grill to stop people feeding the birds and to protect their fingers from being nipped.
Tumblr media

And as the top of the dome is made of solid metal hardly any light passes through the aviary. As a result, the facility is too dark for people to see most of the birds.
The much-anticipated conservatory, predominantly funded by public donations, has been 20 years in the making and took several months to build.
Yet after its grand-unveiling in Bournemouth, Dorset, visitors have been left underwhelmed.

Dozens of squinting observers leaned in close to the aviary to catch a glance of one of its many inhabitants which includes zebra finch, love birds, cockatiels and parrots.
Paul Rice, from Marlborough, Wilts, who frequently visits Bournemouth with partner, Karron Fitchett, said: “The majority of people just walk past now because they can’t see inside.

“£400,000 is a lot of money for that, isn’t it? You can’t see a thing – all you can see is shadow.
“All those people who have put money into it can’t even look at the birds”.
Ms Fitchett described herself as a “bird lover” but that she was disappointed by the aviary. She added: “You’d think they’d have had experts looking at the design who would realise”.
John Holmes, 70, and wife Nina, were also struggling to see. He said: “It’s very hard to see the birds. You can see the utility of the double grill but you need some light coming in from the top of the cage”.

Giran Bhardwas, 65, from London, said: “I was trying to take some pictures on my phone to show my granddaughter but I couldn’t see anything.
“I don’t think it was worth £400,000 – they should have spent the money on more public toilets.
Tumblr media

“It’s the double caging – the narrow holes make it difficult. If they were a little bigger with a see-through top to let light in, it would have been better”.
Tripadviser reviews of the new aviary have been equally unflattering, with one visitor writing it is “not worth looking at”.
They said: “The gardens are always lovely but we were so disappointed in the new aviary, although a safe haven for the birds it’s certainly not an attraction, you cannot see the birds properly as the cages around them obscure view.

“Such a shame the architect could not have come up with something better. Always on our visits we would go see the birds but its not worth looking at anymore”.
Others urged the architects who designed it to “put it right”. One wrote: “The new aviary is very poor – the birds are very hard to see through the two layers of mesh. This really needs a redesign”.
Another review said: “Very disappointed – could not see the birds. Let’s hope the designers put it right”.

Bournemouth’s new bird aviary
Comments on Facebook have been even more scathing with some decrying it as a ‘poorly designed eyesore’ reminiscent of the ‘thunder dome’ in the post-apocalyptic film, Mad Max.
Chris Grant said it was a “great idea but an awful design” while Bev Lloyd described it as a “total eye sore”.
Moni Chai said: “The extra cage ruins the view and nobody seems to want to fix it – what a shame. Not enough thought has gone into it but I bet lots of money was so we’re stuck with this c**p view”.
Named the Coopper Thompson Rescue Aviary, it was funded by £266,255 in public donations – as well as a £150,000 community infrastructure levy from the BCP Council and the Parks Foundation, a local charity.
The Parks Foundation described it as a “landmark structure” offering more room for the birds to fly and a “360 degree viewing experience”.
They said it was built to “higher welfare standards” using “sustainable” materials.
Tumblr media
Derek Heritage from Bournemouth Aviary, the volunteer-led organisation which manages it, said: “It was over 20 years ago that plans were made to remove the old aviary for good.
“Now we are celebrating the working relationship between the council, the Parks Foundation and a group of volunteers and the on-going support from United Taxis who’ve helped us raise the much-needed funds to rebuild the aviary”.
Responding to concerns by visitors that they cannot see inside the aviary, a council spokesman said they would be trialing various “options” to improve visibility.
Tumblr media
Birds in Bournemouth’s aviary. Picture BNPS
Councillor Mark Anderson, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Place, said: “The new Bournemouth Aviary has been designed to keep the birds safe, which is why we have a double mesh layer on the outside.
“This prevents people from feeding the birds which can be harmful to them, and helps keep fingers safe from being pecked. It also provides variable shade for the birds.
“We want everyone who visits it to enjoy 360-degree views of the birds and we recommend standing close to the mesh to see the birds, however, we are aware that not everyone can see through the double mesh layer.
“Taking on board this feedback, will be trialling various options in the coming weeks that will allow better visibility from outside the aviary looking in.
“The aviary is an important part of Bournemouth’s history having been in this location in one form or another since the 1930s. This new structure provides more flight space for the birds and we’re delighted that they’ve settled in to their new surroundings remarkable quickly, making the morning chirp of birdsong that little bit louder – and we hope that all residents and visitors to Bournemouth will once again enjoy seeing the birds in their new, improved habitat.”
