Baiona singing Mikel Laboa's - and unofficial Basque anthem - Txoria txori is so moving and impressive.

Mikel Laboa recorded it in 1974, at the end of Franco's dictatorship, but the lyrics are a poem that Joxean Artze wrote in 1957, in the middle of Franco's dictatorship:

Hegoak ebaki banizkio

If I had cut his/her wings

nerea izango zen

(s)he would be mine

ez zuen alde egingo.

(s)he would not have left.

Bainan, honela,

But, that way,

ez zen gehiago txoria izango

(s)he would no longer be a bird

Eta nik...

and I...

txoria nuen maite.

I loved the bird.

Like all poems, it has many levels: it can refer to the relationship we have with nature and animals, our idea of possession and beauty, our relationship with loved ones, and with the situation of the Basque language and people in times of dictatorship.

The poet himself admitted that he marveled at the number of different interpretations people made of his verses. However it is interpreted, it is a true anthem for Basque people as you can see and hear. Love iiiiit!!!

CARNAVAL de BAIONA 2024 🎭 Desfile de Carrozas y Comparsas

Nos desplazamos a la localidad de Baiona (Pontevedra) para vivir el tradicional Desfile de Carrozas y Comparsas. Una tarde donde Baiona se llenó con cientos de personas por sus calles al son de música, baile y diversión en este Carnaval 2024.
