It's very natural to try and ignore or block out negative experiences. However, we know categorically that it doesn't work. When we try and put negative experiences to one side, what tends to happen is that we use all of our energy keeping them aside - still a slave to their happening. If you want to work past negative thinking, a better option is to practice being more aware of the flip side. Just taking an extra two minutes to walk home and deeply appreciating the sights and sounds of the walk helps counterbalance negativity. In this example, walking home with extra awareness of your surroundings will pull your attention away from your mind - as it's here that we start ruminating and fixing problems that don't exist. By consciously practising tuning into the good stuff that's happening outside, you can start making more good stuff happen inside.
