Commentary: I always go on and on here on this blog about how great it is when Dean and Cas are in character in the stories, but there is one thing that is even more important - good writting.

The Cheapest Room in the House is a popular Destiel fanfiction for a reason. The first time I read the summary, I felt conflicted - I didn't like the premise. It felt too OOC.

Truth be told, I don't think a lot of what Dean and Cas act like in this story is in character with what they're like in the show. I don't think Dean would do this downloading Grindr thing, I don't think he'd be so oblivious about his own feelings and I don't think Cas would engage in physical affection with Dean without being honest about how he felt and knowing Dean felt it back. All of this makes complete sense in the story. And it's good. Amazing, in fact! Because the author ties is up with beautiful characterizations, inner monologues and dialogues. And I do believe Dean would have a hard time accepting he deserves love and shut himself off, just like Cas would keep secrets about how he felt and what he wanted because he believes he should be thankful for what he already has.

Being brave, impulsive, trusting feeling over thought, caring and, eventually, honest - these are all characteristics Dean and Cas have in canon and here.

While talking to Dean and Sam, Cas tells them he has no interest in having sex with woman - in fact, he is gay. Dean, overcompensating and acting on impulsive to avoid thinking, helps him by...downloading Grindr into his own phone and making an account for Cas. From them on, Dean and Cas spend their nights together talking to men on the app and, well, things to on from there (there's also hunting and really good conversations and scenes with Sam and Jack!).

The scene where they finally get together for real is one of my favorites I've ever read! It's so good and honest and raw and beautiful.

They both throw the ball, Cas controlling Dean’s swing with his own arms and his own legs, strong and firm at his back. If he’s a shifter, he could kill me right now, Dean thinks, and stays put right where he is. He releases the ball and they both watch as the ball travels straight towards the pins, hitting them with a good amount of force and knocking them all down. no sam pull quote for this one. but trust he would have things to say about the bowling alley.

"Nah, there's nothing wrong with it, if you like H&R Block chic. I'm just saying, if I was reborn as a hot chick I'd want to show off a little." i’m currently reading Storage Wars by mtothedestiel and i’m enjoying it a lot!

i just recently finished @chapeldean’s Altitude and its AUGH. love. love. dean and cas are both so tender also there’s GOOD BELA WRITING which you don’t see a lot

and then stuff i’ve downloaded as epubs and don’t immediately have the links to — any port in a storm, microcomets. the counterpart effect, fullvoid. arcane, no_absolutelynot (omegaverse smut in the woods). a hole in the world, anneliesemichel. AUTHORITY BY SEASIDEMEOW is a wip but i’m OBSESSED. if you’ve never read with understanding…….. if you’re into dark fic it’s for you. also the cheapest room in the house, biggaybenny aka skr0g is of course amazing.

damn this fic kinda just reached into my chest and scooped something inside of me that was kinda vital. ever since i've read it, i've had scenes that have stuck with me and i have thought of often, so of course i had to bind this fic! @skr0g kindly let me send a copy!!! which has been very exciting and i am so glad i had that opportunity.

design thoughts were. mostly that i needed to make this book look as classy as possible, so that involved using old-ish fonts, for me! i wanted it to be simple but subtle, so using pops of red/burgundy that matched the suede spine was vital for me. it just made me happy doing that. the suede cloth was wonderful to use, and THE WHITE. was great!!! @finalfrontierpublishing kindly sent me some when we exchanged books earlier this year and i am very grateful <3

And when he interacts with Sam Winchester or Eileen Leahy at his stall, it’s easy. He says hello, they say hello back. The Swans are just people. And yet, Dean Winchester remains unfathomable.

i LOVE a romcom fic and this one is soooo fantastic (it's a classic, right?) it has bdsm. it has destiel being idiots in love. it's also incredibly sweet. what more could you want?

WESTERN AU. also to quote myself: "fics that make you pace around your room at midnight while sobbing". also once again i can't believe this isn't a piece of classic literature it's just that damn good.

Time moves differently there, the space ever-changing to make a prison of mountains, cathedrals, salt flats, orchards, and whatever Castiel was led to believe about Heaven’s greatest weapon—Dean Winchester is something entirely unexpected.

we all agree this is canon, right? a classic. it completely shook me up the first time i read it, and honestly it change my perspective of the entire show, for the better of course.

Vagabonds by chevrolangels [E | 89k]

Dean is a sheriff in a tiny town in Colorado, restless and unsatisfied with his life. It's not like what he's read about in the dime novels since he was little, capturing dangerous outlaws and being the last word of the law. More like tossing the town drunk in a cell to sober up when they get a little too rowdy. But Dean's chance comes when a thief rolls through their town. He pursues the thief, which puts him right into the path of Emmanuel, a notorious outlaw. When he is captured by the outlaw and his gang to be held for ransom, Dean starts off on a journey he could have never envisioned, and learns that perhaps there's more to Emmanuel than meets the eye.

another western au!! this list would not be complete without this fic. one of my very faves. it's my ultimate comfort fic. i get so sad whenever i finish it because i never want it to end. i can't praise it enough i don't have the words

i have no idea what waitress is and it literally doesn't matter because ivy makes this its whole own world... if you want something insanely sweet, with amazing character depth and that feels like a warm hug, look no further. this is one of my comfort fics and i have read it multiple times and will read it again!!!!!

Who Ya Gonna Call? by saintedcastiel (@saintedcastiel) [M | 49k]

Finally free from Chuck's machinations, Dean flees the bunker to make a home for himself away from the hunting world. He settles into his new life but can't quite shake the feeling that he's not alone. There's a ghost haunting him, tied to the last thing on Earth that Castiel touched. As the spirit gets angrier and more dangerous to the people around him, will Dean be able to bring himself to let him go?

if you're reading this the day i post this you might have seen me losing my mind on the dash. read it one sitting because it pulled me in instantly and would not let me go. so beautifully written and it's... it's the ending we deserved. i think this needs to be the next fandom classic i am Not joking. one of the few fics that made me sob my eyes out i don't even know what to say anymore just read it please trust me it's WONDERFUL.

hi! just finished And This, Your Living Kiss yesterday and omg dmnfkddmsks people weren't lying! anyways, i was wondering if you have any recommendations on similar fics? poet!dean is just🥺

Ahhh I was also reluctant to read ATYlK at first because I don't like AUs in general but I am so glad some people on here cinvinced me to give it a chance because oh boy it's a fucking masterpiece!!! I loved everything about it but what stood out to me is how masterfully the enviroment was presented. I feel like this is something that gets glossed over in fanfics usually but this fic man! Made me feel like I was at the campus with Dean and then that I was in his poetry class!! Legit made me want to go back to academia, I am not exaggerating at all 😅 And the reveal scene!!!!! I was feeling all the emotions reading it!

I believe this is also post finale? Tbh I don't remmeber the details beyond it being about these two idiots failing to communicate and then at one point succeeding. Also Dean builds Cas a gazebo!!!

sobsicles is another aurhor that just gets Dean & Cas so I'd recommend reading all their stuff of you dig this one

The Most Important Thing by NorthernSparrow

Northern Sparrow is another big name in the fandom and I think there are probably fics by then that are more popular than this one but this was the first foc of theirs I read and it just stuck with me because of it's wonderful premise -Jimmy is raising his teenage daughter except something's not right. This has a lot of Claire which I enjoyed because imo Claire is a Hamlet caliber of character on SPN who is constantly being underexplored so this was nice. Though there is plenty of Destiel n this too and their relationship does become pivotal towards the end.
