DEATH IN PARADISE SPIN-OFF SERIES BEYOND PARADISE IS COMING TO BBC ONE AND IPLAYER ON FRIDAY 24TH FEBRUARY 2023.
CO-COMMISSIONED BY THE BBC AND BRITBOX INTERNATIONAL, BEYOND PARADISE FOLLOWS DI HUMPHREY GOODMAN (KRIS MARSHALL) AND HIS FIANCÉE MARTHA LLOYD (SALLY BRETTON) AFTER THEIR NAIL-BITING WILL-THEY-WON’T-THEY ROMANCE REACHED ITS EMOTIONAL FINALE IN SAINT MARIE IN 2017. VIEWERS WERE DELIGHTED WHEN HUMPHREY TOOK CONTROL OF HIS DESTINY AND FOLLOWED MARTHA BACK TO LONDON TO DECLARE HIS UNDYING LOVE FOR HER.
A new adventure awaits as we find them arriving in Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast, having left London. As they embark on their new life whilst temporarily living with Martha’s mum Anne Lloyd (Barbara Flynn), the couple are quickly thrown in at the deep end as Martha sets out to pursue her dream of running her own restaurant and Humphrey joins the local police force. Quickly making an impression on the somewhat eclectic team; DS Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), PC Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn) and Margo Martins (Felicity Montagu), Humphrey sets out to help crack a host of baffling cases, with the Shipton Abbott squad witnessing a whole new approach to police work...
Each week the team will face a new crime with a unique puzzle at its heart. The not-so-sleepy town of Shipton Abbott will be rocked by an entire family disappearing without a trace, a woman claiming she was attacked by a suspect from the seventeenth century, the robbery of a highly prized painting, a body bizarrely discovered in a crop circle and a serial arsonist with a seeming distaste for local businesses.
As Humphrey gets stuck into his new job, he and Martha must also navigate life’s ups and downs, as faces from the past, the decisions they make and challenges of setting up life in a new town put their relationship to the ultimate test.
Created by Robert Thorogood and Tony Jordan, Beyond Paradise is a co-commission between the BBC and BritBox International and is produced by Red Planet Pictures, part of the Asacha Media Group.
Founder and Executive Chairman of Red Planet Pictures, Jordan, acts as showrunner, leading a team of writers – Amy Guyler, Ian Kershaw, Chloë Mi Lin Ewart - working across the 6x60 series. Tony Jordan, Tim Key and Belinda Campbell are executive producers for Red Planet Pictures, and Diederick Santer and Tommy Bulfin are executive producers for BritBox International and BBC respectively. The series is produced by Lindsay Hughes, directed by Sandy Johnson and Matt Carter. BBC Studios brokered the co-production deal with Britbox International and handle international distribution.

I was rewatching Rick and Morty and I love that Rick just goes "No citadel episode, we're not doing plot progression today." What a mood.
Also, the character growth with Rick admitting he loves Birdperson and that's why he was so determined to save him. S1 Rick would never have said he loved anyone, and he's admitting it, out loud, to a different version of himself. I ship Rick and BP, for the toxicity, but Rick going from a temper tantrum over BP not wanting to travel the universe with him and saying death was meaningless to "I know he won't stay but I love him and even though I can just find a new BP that would stay in a different dimension, I can't lose this one to death."
I really enjoyed that episode, it told us so much about Rick. I also think it ties into the long game. The Rickest Rick is that Rick because he doesn't care. Evil Morty is that Morty because he doesn't care. But our Rick does care, and he can't face that Rick or Evil Morty alone. And he isn't alone, not anymore, and he's learning to accept that
OH MAN, I KNOW. The character development that Rick goes through is so good and it still pisses me off when fake fans reduces him to nihiliastic badass untouchable badass. Like, he WISHES he could be like that and is constantly frustrated that he can't be.

Well...I told myself I’d poke at editting today. But. That. One. Scene. I hate it even more now than when I originally wrote it around s5. And if the fic wasn’t set post s3 pre s4 and from the characters’ perspectives as still somewhat “canon” compliant...I’d gleefully rip it out and BURN IT while dancing around its flames.

My complicated opinion on Keith Kogane
Tumblr media
Keith Kogane is definitely one of the more popular characters in the VLD fandom. People love brooding emo bad boys.
My feelings on Keith are... complicated. I definitely don’t hate him. I have a lot of problems with the character but I don’t think I could ever bring myself to actually hate him. Mainly because I kinda relate to him. We both have problems controlling our emotions, interacting with people, and making friends.
And we both have trouble believing there are people who truly have our best interests at heart and won’t abandon us because we’re a burden.
What I do hate is the way his character was written and the way it negatively impacted the characters around him.
There are definitely a lot of factors that contributed to VLD ending up the way it did. But to me, Keith and the writers insistence on pushing him to the forefront was the poison that killed the show.
Tumblr media
Ok, before we get into this whole rant I feel like I should talk about the things I do like about Keith.
I like the premise of Keith’s character. He’s half Galra and never really fit in on Earth. He didn’t act like the other “normal” kids so kids made fun of him and adults didn’t want to deal with him. So in order to protect himself from the pain of rejection he would put up a tough angry facade and push people away and reject them before they could reject him.
This is something that really resonates with me personally having grown up neurodivergent. It’s awful growing up in a world that isn’t made for people like you and not knowing how to interact with or connect with your peers. Especially when you don’t know why you’re like that.
You learn to avoid social interaction because it always ends up negative. You put up walls because you don’t feel like anybody understands you or what you’re going through.
I know the writers probably didn’t intend to code Keith as neurodivergent. They just wanted Keith to be a hothead with abandonment issues, but nonetheless, this interpretation means a lot to me.
Tumblr media
I also really like his relationship with Shiro. Keith is so used to being left behind and abandoned that when he meets someone like Shiro who’s patient and genuinely cares it’s new and strange. He’s so ready for Shiro to abandon him, even telling Shiro to send him back to the home, but Shiro refuses to leave him and tells Keith ethat he’s never going to give up on him.
It’s also interesting to see how their relationship develops over time. It’s clear Keith trusts Shiro, but you can tell that that fear of abandonment is still there deep down. In S2, Keith tells Shiro that he’s like a brother to him, and then in season 6, he takes the extra step and tells Shiro that he IS his brother and that he loves him. And for someone like Keith, telling their friend they love them is a big scary thing.
And also it’s just great to see a platonic “I love you,” especially between two guys. Don’t be afraid to tell your bros you love them!!!
Tumblr media
Now let’s talk about the stuff I didn’t like.
Keith doesn’t have much going for him in terms of personality. He’s just sorta brooding and serious all the time. He does make jokes occasionally but it’s rare. The writers were more focused on making him cool and badass rather than fun.
I always loved the idea of Keith as a cocky carefree asshole who doesn’t give a shit about rules/laws and is kinda rude/aggressive but has a heart of gold deep down and would do anything for the people he cares about. (Just like a cat.)
I would also make him more alien esc. In terms of design I like the idea of Keith having red eyes with narrow pupils and fangs. And also just small things like the way he walks and holds himself. He growls and bears his teeth when he’s angry, his hair puffs up when scared, he’s fast and agile, disappearing and reappearing without making much noise, small things.
Then you have his race and sexuality. I have no doubt in my mind that Keith was intended to be a straight white dude. A lot of people see him as gay and Asian but there’s no evidence for this in canon. Acxa was originally intended to be his love interest and his race was never mentioned in canon. His name isn’t even Kogane in canon. (And the race of the voice actor doesn’t equal the race of the character. If that was the case Shiro, Hunk, and Lance would be white.)
They should’ve totally made Keith Japanese like he was in the original. It would’ve been so easy! Just canonize Kogane as his last name and have the book say he’s half Japanese half Galra. They could’ve also done what they did with Shiro and keep his og GoLion name. Just have him be Akira Kogane. Definitely cooler than “Keith.”
And as for his sexuality, I definitely think they should’ve had Keith be gay. But well get to that Later...
Tumblr media
I also don’t like how they handled the whole Krolia thing. Not only was it crazy rushed, but it completely goes against the shows theme of found family.
Keith’s arc should’ve been about overcoming his abandonment issues and learning to accept the paladins as family. But instead they just get rid of the abandonment issues by just giving him his mom back.
I know a lot of people love Krolia but I don’t feel like she should’ve been introduced in anything other than flashbacks. Because Keith’s mom isn’t really that important. The show is about found family and friendship, not blood relation.
You can definitely have Keith learn about his mom and his family, but I feel like giving him his mom back was too much.
Personally, I always headcanoned that Kolivan was Keith’s grandfather or just a close friend of Krolia’s, and when Keith showed up at the Blade’s base Kolivan recognized the blade as his Krolia’s. Keith could learn about his mom through Kolivan telling him about her, how she was a great person and warrior who died fighting to make the universe a safer place for her son.
Tumblr media
Another thing I didn’t like was the whole Keith leaving the team for the Blades thing. I know why he did it, he felt like the team was gonna reject him, he wanted to be more useful, and wanted to learn about his family, but I feel like you could’ve touched on all that without having him abandon his team.
One of the biggest problems with the show is that they did a bad job at establishing the paladins as friends, they feel like coworkers more than anything, and I feel like Keith being absent for two seasons contributed to that.
And his absence is hardly addressed. The team forms Voltron perfectly without him and no one ever says they miss him. Keith doesn’t even seem like he missed them after being gone for two years.
And a lot of the weight was taken out of that Keith v Kuron fight by the fact that Keith and Kuron hardly interacted.
That whole thing amounted to four things, Keith meeting Krolia (which I don’t think should’ve happened), them finding the colony (which was a dumb plot I don’t think should’ve happened), Keith aging up two years (which was weird and unnecessary), and Keith meeting Kosmo (which is... complicated).
I don’t think this plot was necessary. Keith should’ve stayed with his team.
Tumblr media
Then you have his relationship with Lance. I know people are very sensitive about this topic. People have very strong opinions about whether or not Keith and Lance were intended to be romantically coded.
Personally, I do like Klance but I don’t believe they were romantically coded. I think if you want them to get together some things would have to go differently.
For example, the bonding moment. In canon, Lance tells Keith, “we make a good team.” I don’t see this as referring to him and Keith. I think he was talking about the whole team. If you want it to be about the two of them, I feel like it should be Lance telling Keith something like, “ya know, you’re not so bad after all,” and then Keith smiles and responds, “you’re not so bad yourself.”
Another example could be the scene where Lance comes to Keith with his insecurities. (Whether it’s as a leader or a friend.) This scene was weird in canon, Lance comes to Keith for advice and Keith basically tells him to just stop thinking about it.
I would prefer if Lance brought up to Keith how he doesn’t feel like he’s good enough or that he doesn’t have, “a thing,” and Keith is completely dumbfounded like, “what are you even talking about?” He goes on about all the good shit about Lance. Talks about how Blue chose him, how he’s a great shot, how he’s good at dealing with people, meanwhile Lance is standing there in shock as Keith says all these nice things about him.
Over all you would just have to develop their relationship more. More meaningful interactions. And if you want the relationship to be romantic you would have to establish that early on. Establish that one or both has romantic feelings for the other in like S1/S2 because if you wait too long it’s gonna feel forced/out of no where.
Tumblr media
And then... you have the Black Paladin arc... I’m gonna be real with y’all, this is the arc that killed the show for me, for a few reasons.
One, even ignoring the whole quintessence bond thing, it makes no sense for Keith to be the bp. He doesn’t fit the role. I adore Shiro but choosing Keith as his successor was a dumb move. I get that he saw potential in Keith but they’re are fighting a war, there’s no room for favoritism.
Shiro should’ve chosen Allura as his successor. Not only does she have actual leadership experience, but you would only have one paladin in a new Lion instead of three.
If a lifeguard breaks his leg and can’t work, he should choose an experienced swimmers to take his place, not his little bro that’s still in water wings in the hopes that it’ll teach him to swim.
Two, Keith being the bp doesn’t help his arc. Keith’s arc is about overcoming his abandonment issues and learning to be a team player, he doesn’t need to be the leader for that.
VLD should’ve been about the paladins growing into the best versions of themselves they could be. Their development shown by unlocking new abilities in their respective lions, new forms for their bayards, and new Voltron bayard power ups. They shouldn’t have to change lions and themselves.
Keith and Red have a strong bond and work great together. Keith and Red are both temperamental, unpredictable, and have issues with trust. Keith having to fight to get Red to trust and open up to him mirrors how others have to fight to earn Keith’s trust and get him to let down his walls.
It would’ve been interesting to see them grow together. Keith has no emotional connection with Black.
We never even get to see them bond. Keith just suddenly becomes the “perfect” bp/leader because he got over his mommy issues
Three, it’s a MASSIVE disservice to Shiro’s character. Shiro put all the work in earning his position as the bp, he literally fits fought Zarkon on the astral plane to earn her trust, yet Keith is the true bp? What?
It sucks. Sendak told Shiro that a monster like him could never be a paladin and the writers went and proved him right. Hell Shiro didn’t even get to kill Sendak, Keith got that too.
And don’t tell me, “but he got the Atlas!” REALLY!? A massive Deus ex machina that required absolutely no effort from him to acquire!? Filled with a bunch of rando background characters no one gives a shit about!? You’re totally right, that 100% makes up for it.
I could go on and on about how the treatment of Shiro in this show (and fandom) is blatantly ableist but that’s a rant for another time.
Tumblr media
It sucks. I want to like Keith! He had the potential to be an amazing character but the writers just kept on trying to turn him into something he wasn’t and it ruined him for me.
They kept trying to turn Keith into the main character and ignored that ALL the paladins are the main characters. It’s an ensemble cast! You don’t have to have everything come back to one guy.

Alright so I'm gonna give a full rundown of each BP's legendary character skins for reference
So, starting off a bit ehh because I don't remember which season the battle pass was first introduced
S1/2: Octane and Caustic
S3: Lifeline and Pathfinder
S4: Wattson and Wraith
S5: Bangalore and Mirage
S6: Bloodhound and Pathfinder
S7: Wraith and Octane
S8: Lifeline and Bangalore
S9: Wraith and Rampart
So as you can see here Respawn is full of shit
Because as it stands, characters who have not received legendary BP skins are: Crypto, Revenant, Loba, Gibraltar, Horizon, and Fuse (and Valkyrie will also be one of the characters who hadn't received one but she's a new character so they get some slack)
Now, I believe most of these characters have received blue rarity skins (the ones you get at the beginning of each BP), but it's still a bit ridiculous Wraith has received the most with Octane right behind, Path and Lifeline being the runner-ups
The obvious bias for higher-played characters (even though Wraith is far from meta now lol) is a bit ridiculous and, regardless of who gets a legendary, the BP will be bought. People want crafting materials and Apex packs. It would be nice to get other content for other characters, Respawn

I wanna know everything
WHERE DO I BEGIN, VULPES????
Okay okay, I’m just gonna list off the things that I’ve already written for this AU and hope I don’t get into spoilers for the Undercut DJ. To make things clear, this AU is like a mix of canon divergence/fix-it since I’ve been taking the time to rewatch VLD and analyze the story as a whole. So let’s start at the beginning~
Voltron 2020: A canon divergence/fix-it AU based on the 2016 VLD series. I only call it Voltron 2020 since the stories I’ve written/drawn for it so far wouldn’t be out in the public until next year haha.
Tumblr media
Where does it start?
V2020 (I’m just shorten it to this) keeps S1 and S2 in canon and kicks off in S3. There’s only one small change I would make to S1 but I’ll get into that when I talk about Shiro in this AU.
These haircuts??? Explain please???
Haha, yes I’m a fan of the idea of Keith, Lance and Allura (yeah you heard me) having shorter haircuts. More so Lance because compared to the rest of the cast’s original designs, his hair maybe be simple but lacks a bit of flair. Lance is the one who get’s his undercut first and the story behind how it happens is covered in a fan comic called undercut that’s slated for release this year.
Tumblr media
How Keith and Allura get their haircuts are part of the story as well but doesn’t come until maybe S4 or after (I have to figure out the details on that). But for now, I just wanted to see how Keith looked with short hair and it looks pretty good!
Keith is in BP suit and Lance is in RP suit?
Yup, one of the things that drove me bonkers in VLD was how they didn’t match their lions. This is more of an OCD thing because I prefer matched colors over mix-match. However, once again changing their suits also has a reason behind it in the story. You can sort of call it…truly stepping into their new roles in the Paladin team. For Keith, becoming the leader Shiro always saw in him. For Lance, becoming the right-hand man and gaining confidence in his skills as a pilot (also becoming Keith’s rock haha).
Okay the real question: Does Shiro die in this AU?
Here’s where things get…a bit interesting? I have two versions of this AU where Shiro does die in his battle with Zarkon and the other where he does not die. So a divergent…within a divergent haha. I have to preface this with I don’t hate Shiro by any means and love his character with all my heart, which is why I made a version where he doesn’t die. Shiro as a disabled, LGBT and PoC character has so much potential that killing him off would be a waste for storytelling. Since the AU takes off in S3 where it was implied that he died, that’s where I took the story and started writing how his death affected the team, mainly Keith. The main point I want to get across is that Shiro needs to lose his connection to Black Lion in order for Keith, Lance and Allura to grow as characters.
In the case I choose to have Shiro die….
As per usual, Keith reluctantly becomes the Black Paladin, Lance becoming the Red Paladin and Allura is the Blue Paladin. We see how Keith is struggling with his loss of Shiro and how he feels incompetent being the leader of Voltron. This would then lead to into the undercut comic and spark a more genuine, supportive friendship between Keith and Lance. I would also keep how Shiro’s conscience remains in the Black Lion, which only Keith knows about cause he’s BP now. This would be great thread to connect Keith and Allura who have lost someone dear to them and rely on technology to keep them alive (when in reality they will always live in their hearts).
I would also keep the Kuron idea but instead of him joining team Voltron, Honerva and Zakron use the Shiro clones and make their own version of Voltron with the Robeasts we see in S7-8. That way, we could keep The Black Paladins fight since that’s a very emotional and groundbreaking moment for Keith having to face someone cares deeply for.
In the case I choose to have Shiro live….
I wouldn’t have him be BP again since that prevents Keith from growing into a leader, which then prevent Lance growing as a character and then prevents Allura from growing as a character. If anyone has noticed after watching the series, the character development kind of gets wonky when they decided to bring Shiro back as BP. If anything, it really hindered Keith, Lance and Allura’s character development since S3 focused so much on the dynamics in team Voltron shifted (which would have been super interesting to see as time went on). Since this idea is fairly still new I haven’t quite figured out how I would write the story if I went this route. But, I’m not opposed of having Shiro being involved with the Altean colony…again gotta workshop some stuff here but killing off Shiro is such a waste of potential!
ALSO, if Shiro stays alive, then we need to address Adam in S1 E1. It can be simple like when everyone is at Keith’s shack and Adam’s name gets dropped casually like this:
Shiro: How did you get all this information? This is classified stuff from the Garrison…
Keith: I had someone help me.
Shiro: Someone….?
Keith: …it was Adam.
Shiro: Oh…
Not exact but my point is that could have been a great moment to tell the audience Shiro and Keith have a connection with Adam (more so Shiro because we all didn’t know he was gay until much much later in the series). But lemme move on before I get too into Adam cause so much needs to be written out before I spill it all haha.
Next big question: which ships are canon?
Y’all don’t burn me at the stake but….
Allura and Lotor.
I KNOW I KNOW! BUT WHAT ABOUT KLANCE!?!?!?!?!??!
Y’all know I will ship Klance until the end of time but right now I haven’t gotten to a point in the story where confirming Klance as a romantic relationship feels natural and right yet. If anything, in V2020 I really want to build Keith and Lance’s relationship as friends and teammates which in turn can lead into something more. But the groundwork needs to be done in order for that to happen.
But yeah Allura and Lotor are confirmed in V2020 cause that feels right and Lotor deserves so much more than what we saw in the show. I’ll leave it at that for now.
Is the ending the same?
HA. NOPE. FAR FROM IT!
This is probably biggest change I made in V2020 but when VLD did this it made me worried for the show as a whole:
Zarkon remains as the main villain and final boss for the entire series.
I would have not killed off Zarkon as early as they did in VLD simply because Zarkon was made out to be such a big threat in the beginning. Don’t get me wrong, Honerva and the war factions are a cool idea as opposing forces but they could have happened first and left Zarkon for last.
Honevra regaining her memories and going on her rampage could have happened first. Lotor could have found out that she was his mother  and had to confront his abuser. Allura would have to face the fact someone of her own kind was doing horrible things and that evil isn’t determined by (alien) race. All of that could have been presented before killing Zarkon and would have pushed Allura and Lotor’s character development. Also, having Honevra written off first would give Zarkon even more incentive to do what he’s doing cause well, that’s his wife and love makes you do crazy things. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The war factions could have happened after Honerva and that’s where we learn more about the Galra empire and society. Where are there are cracks in the system? How are half breeds like Keith and Lotor viewed? How do factions like the Blade come into play and help team Voltron? All of that could have been explored! Honestly, the war factions arc(?) is an opportunity to further develop Keith and Lotor characters and their relationship since they are both half-Galra.
As for the final battle and ending of it all, Allura doesn’t die and Voltron (the robot) is the one to be sacrificed.
I wrote a whole theory on it after watching S8, so if you wanna read yet another long post you can check it out here haha.
The point of keeping Zarkon as the main (and final) villain in V2020 is to keep the overarching story simple. Think of ATLA, the story as a whole is really simple: 4 nations based on elemental powers are under the tyrannical rule of a dictator and only one person can stop him and save the world. By keeping the objective of the story simple, there’s room for character development and world-building. Instead of a dark, broody space epic (if that’s what you wanna call it), V2020 focuses more on the characters and world-building that are affected by the main opposing force known as Zarkon. A lot of the stories I have in mind are more episodic but I think that works best for a show where the stage is as grand as space haha.
Pidge and Hunk??
As for Pidge, she kind of….gets everything she wants in the show?? There isn’t really anything drastic I would change since the show fixed her issues…
As for Hunk my baby boy sweet cinnamon roll, don’t worry. I’m making sure he’s more than just a scaredy cat who loves food. I really liked how in the show Hunk learned about Galra diplomacy so maybe I can work with that!
___
Yeah, I think….that’s everything I can tell you about this AU and I’m so sorry, Vulpes, that I made this answer so long! ^^; Thank you showing interest in my AU!

well i think this is as good a time as any to advertise my @voltron-fix-it-fic, “The Space Between Stars.” It’s currently ongoing and 77k+ words, and starts from where s1 ended. so anything s2+ onwards gets retconned, reworked, or completely omitted. everyone gets a character arc and development. all the relationships are developed. heavy shallura focus. endgame bp shiro, and bp allura in s3. new backstory for how voltron was created. allura’s mother matters. allura has strong friendships with lance and keith. shiro has strong friendships with people beyond keith. there’s plot. mystery. emotional continuity and lasting consequences. unburying the gays + bi shiro and more rep like bi lance, nb pidge, antok/kolivan and thace/ulaz as side pairings. adam lives and the paladins’ families all matter. hunk has two moms. coran gets treated like an actual character. lore that’s respected and created. basically already better than vld in every way. hit it up, fam

Hey, I know you hate the Lion Swap and all, but I liked Keith as BP, which he was in the original. And I know you probably disagree, but the rights holders doubtlessly would've wanted Keith in the BP position at some point to go with past canon. This was supposed to be a reboot, after all.
Reboot, remake, revival… I can never remember which is which without looking it up. Hold on, there’s a thread you might find really interesting. I think it was @nomadicism who weighed in on that long thread about reboots vs remakes? If someone knows the one I mean, could you drop it in the comments? (tia!)
As for the original series, I did see it as a kid, and among all the characters, hands-down, Keith was my favorite. I mean, I was okay with Lance, Allura was mostly tolerable, and kid-me wanted Nanny to die in a fire. Possibly along with Pidge. (I don’t remember why Pidge, I just remember not liking him.) But Keith? He was totally leadership material, and his dynamic with Lance was probably my favorite part of any episode: Keith’s even keel, Lance’s hotshot snark.
Needless to say, I was a bit baffled when I first sat down to watch VLD. I mean, there’s Keith v1, and then there’s this Keith… who’s not really a Lance v2, but he’s not… uh. Well, I wasn’t sure where he fit. It took a bit to set all that aside in my head and just accept that Shiro is Keith v2. Not exactly, but about as close as Lance is to Lance v1, which is to say kinda? But anyway.
As for the lion swap, I can’t say I hated it. That’s too strong. More like: the execution left a great deal to be desired, which I guess is putting it mildly. On its own, the lion swap had some great story potential. When the story begins with everyone where they ‘fit’ perfectly, you really do need to shake that up.
The problem was the story broke its internal consistency in the process. The character discussions and reactions made S1′s lore seem almost arbitrary, and there never was an explanation for the second swap (Blue to Red).
I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before (hopefully tagged correctly under #lion-swap), but there’s a special delight for me when a story takes an established rule, turns it inside-out, and reveals either a loophole or a hidden rule. It’s got to mesh perfectly with what we already know, and once revealed, the audience’s reaction should be: oh damn it that makes so much sense, why didn’t we see that before, it’s so obvious in hindsight!
The (way too much later) revelation that Shiro’s spirit was in Black did work in this way. With hindsight, it made sense why Black insisted on Keith, and hesitated with the clone. [For the purposes of a shorter response, I’m setting aside the unintended consequences of making the capable WoC commander appear unqualified to fly Black.]
Having Shiro as a kind of conduit for how Keith could fly a lion that (according to the original lore) shouldn’t ‘fit’ him was great, and revealed an intriguing loophole. Unfortunately it did nothing to explain why Lance had also leap-frogged lions. It also meant that Keith staying in Black in S7 made no sense, because the original justification was gone. I mean, Shiro’s back, so… why aren’t we getting another swap?
In some ways, what makes me grumpy about VLD is that it sets up interesting premises… and never really pushes at them. So Lance and Keith don’t get along in S1. And then they… just keep not getting along. Until they do. No, no, give them something to really conflict about, with urgency, where it’s thrashed out and in the open so we can all move on already to some new dynamics. And that’s ignoring all the interactions we never really saw: Pidge and Keith working together, Lance and Shiro, Hunk and Allura, Allura and Pidge, and on and on.
The lion swap is just one more example of that strangely tentative approach. Take the rules and push ‘em further. I wanted to see Pidge in a situation where she had to fly Yellow, or Hunk land temporarily in Red. Go ahead, put Shiro in Blue (but goddamnit stop with the ‘training wheels’ lion, who came up with that insulting phrase). Put Allura in Green. Do something with the concept.
Even with VLD being branded, iirc, as a reboot (not a remake), I think it was a common expectation among those of us who’d seen the first iteration as kids that Keith would eventually (even if only temporarily) fly Black. So it wasn’t that much of a surprise. It’s pretty much an obligatory nod, whether remake or reboot, whichever is the one that’s clean slate.
By the time the lion swap did happen, after all, we’d mostly settled in with this new Keith, and while other parts of the writing bugged me, I figured hey, it should be interesting. If the goal (big if) was to have Keith grow from this lonely, awkward, somewhat temperamental kid into the even-keeled Keith of the original story… well. That’s a huge personality jump, so let’s see how the story rolls everything out.
And then what, uh, three episodes later, Keith’s suddenly with the blades? And this not-quite-Shiro is in Black, and yet Lance is still in Blue? I mean, wasn’t the entire point to, y’know, get Keith to figure out leadership skills? And what was Lance’s lesson about being in Red, anyway? The story set up the lions as being more than just big machines (as the original had)… and then did so little with it.
If the lion-match is predicated on some kind of simpatico state, then a swap is a great vehicle (err, so to speak) for demonstrating a character’s growth, or for triggering some kind of realization/development. I mean, there’s just so many possibilities, and as long as you can find a way to use them to explore and deepen the lore (respecting continuity), then it can only strengthen the story.
And the worldbuilding, but I’ll leave that for another post.

...even now. I can think of 99 ways of fixing VeeLaDee and returning it back to its s1 feel-good mood.
(While still acknowledging the Dark bits. Like a universe at war, Shiro’s and Allura’s and Coran’s trauma. Implications of quintessence. If you’re gonna have clones how to give them autonomy and actually Make Sense with the rest of the story.)
More Balmeras. Less Colonies.
And while timetravel and alternate realities are normally an eye-rolling hack...
In this case? The “original” is so bad and depressing that I think we’d all be okay with taking the hack.
Anyway.
Not like VeeLaDee hadn’t already introduced Realities and Reality manipulation. And there’s a fine line between Reality and Time, anyway (especially if you choose to borrow the BackToTheFuture version of TimeTravel...which the Earth Shop DID have a freaking delorian as an easteregg, so...)
And metal can be reforged. So who says that Sincline even had to stay as Sincline? (And I’m sorry, but those “dark entities” were literally the quintessence field’s “white bloodcells” that Honerva/Haggar poked. They even share design simulatities with the Weblum’s white bloodcells that attacked Hunk and Keith and Acxa. Those weren’t “bacteria”. They literally functioned as white bloodcells treating the cast like allergens.)

A lot of people are upset that Keith was the one that offed Sendak rather than Shiro. What's your take on that?
Ahhhh this question this damn question this is one of the questions thats going to get saltiest so i have been waiting a bit to answer it. I will put it in no uncertain term: the best way I can describe this moment is as a cardinal sin. It has no good value to the plot or characters (well kinda there is one thing but it is very subjective) the sendak fight was one of the best examples of how to screw over a character’s entire arc, history, and agency in every way and it is tied for my least favorite episode of the show along with the stranded episode. They both symbolize an issue with the series, the stranded episode has several including the fact that they are forcing BP Keith unnaturally in canon, and the Sendak fight is something just as bad. You would be hard pressed to find something more representative of the shows tendency to give anything Shiro earns to Keith instead for no good reason. Heck the only thing that could be more representative would be something crazy like Keith suddenly being the sole Black Paladin with no reason given in canon and the out of canon given reason making no logical sense and Keith just being given the lion because it should be like the og Voltron. OH WAIT  the real issue with Keith being the one to defeat Sendak is that it further fucks over Shiro’s arc. It already turned out to be Constant suffering before finding purpose as the Black Paladin and then getting killed with no explanation and getting forcibly retired before being given a consolation prize of a different robot which in its Maiden Fight just serves to let Voltron do the important stuff, but now defeating Sendak robs Shiro of the closure of finally freeing himself as the Galra’s Champion. Now you could say the new arm does that but Sendak since S1 has always been Shiro’s foil. They have the missing arm but mirrored (heck even in s7 Shiro gets a new arm that floats just like Sendak’s new arm!) Shiro’s adorable undercut floof seems to also be similar to Sendak’s fluffy ears and instead of a nose scar Sendak has his bionic eye. In character as well they’re foils. Sendak is basically Shiro if Shiro embraced his role as the arena champion, if he accepted his arm, if he accepted galra subservience, if he accepted being a monster. Sendak is the literal symbol of what Shiro hates and as a rule characters defeating or dealing with their foils in someway is a big moment. So take everything i just said, and realize that instead of giving this important moment to Shiro, they gave it to KEITH. AGAIN. I honestly love Keith before s6 but this is starting to get insane with Keith getting to do things that he has no business getting to either do solo or do at all. And if you like the sendak fight cause you see it as a Sh/eith moment? That’s totally understandable and i feel you! If it were Lance who did it I would feel that way too! But I would still have to say that this is BAD this totally screws up Shiro even more than the season already did and there is no good excuse for it, or at the very least I have yet to see one that isn’t about shipping (which while very nice does not fix the characterization fuckery) or just another repeat of “Shiro should rest” or “It’s good that he is retired!” Which I haven’t liked hearing since s6 and those arguments have only gotten more cacophonous now.

VLD Season 7 Reactions
My inbox has been busy non-stop since Season 7 dropped, and I thought I’d share a few with you, @dreamworksanimation and @voltron, just in case you’ve missed the fandom’s reaction to the new season.
It's sad that we've gradually gone from being excited to new seasons to feeling worried and skeptical. There was a lot of dread in the fandom instead of anticipation for s7 and the interviews fueled it. People used to make intriguing theories but now it's all "how s7 would have been better" and "this is a crack theory but knowing vld it might be canon" We are supposed to be right before the grand finale of a space opera but people can't wait for it to be over. What a great way to end a series!
The grand space opera became a space tragedy in one season. We’ve waited for a payoff that will seemingly never come - including the end of the lion swap. An introduction of a new mecha should have exciting but was overshadowed the permanent demotion of Allura from commander to foot-soldier and the banishment of Shiro from Voltron and his lion, the latter with whom Shiro shared the strongest bond. This also ended Shiro’s internal struggle of “can I be worthy of the paladin mantle” with the answer, “no, you can’t be.”
Season 7 could have the fandom’s resurgence, after a strong Season 6 showing, but from the standpoint of almost everyone in my inbox - the fandom is just tired and ready to move on.
More under the cut.
I commented on a Youtube video how I didn't like the Atlas consolation prize, and someone replied saying I need to stop because they “clearly“ aren't trying to bench him or anything. It took everything I had to not respond with a rant.
Wanting to rant is understandable. I’ve had this conversation a few times - messages, on my blog - about why Shiro being in Atlas isn’t a satisfying conclusion to his character’s arc. It’s not about him being benched, per se - though he is. Shiro’s internal struggle was deciding if he was worthy to be a paladin after everything that happened to him - and what he had to do to survive. By putting him in Atlas, the show is saying he is unworthy of the Black Paladin mantle.
Sending this demoralizing message in the same season that we learn Shiro is also LGBTQ+ representative is reprehensible but perhaps ignorant. Saying that Shiro is also unworthy of the Black Paladin mantle as a multiple-minority, LGBTQ+ character with PTSD and a disability, is unconscionable.
I honestly think the dream works execs weren't told the full story on what they were planning with Shiro. The way they speak about the Atlas, the DreamWorks execs seemed to be left out of the picture as to how much distance they put between Shiro and his team - or how he goes half the season being nothing more than a background prop. The way they say “the Atlas does something really cool“ makes me think they never gave the impression Shiro was going to be next to irrelevant.
Could be! But now it’s DreamWorks’ job to correct the issue. They need to come out with a statement, say that recognize there is an issue, and that they are taking steps to correct it. However, the only communication we’ve gotten from DreamWorks was JDS’s apology (and subsequent tweets by LM), and that letter was ineffective. It addressed queerbaiting, not what the EPs did to Shiro, a LGBTQ+ character, or even to Adam, Zethrid, and Ezor.
So I’m not sure if DreamWorks’ execs have acknowledged that there are offensive and harmful messages in Voltron, especially Season 7.
My deepest wish was that after they came back from Sven's reality, they actually went to another reality, very similar to the original and never realized, and in the end of season 8 slav will tell them that and they'll go back to their own reality, and continues on s9 with Shiro being actually alive, just captured again by haggar, then rescued and he is the bp for ever and keith is back to red and allura is back to castle and lance is like blue i missed you and blue is like [expletive deleted] me too the [expletive deleted]
Duuuuude. Can we make this canon?
I know being salty helps nobody least of all myself, but I'm so irked that the EPs pat themselves on the back for making Shiro gay, when a)they don't get that Adam's death is an issue that goes way beyond OTPs, b)they did kill Shiro, c)even though Shiro eventually got back, Kuron didn't, not in any piece of actual canon, and presumably Kuron was gay too so that's 2 dead gays (4 if you count the implied lesbians), and d)apparently Shiro being Asian, mentally ill and disabled doesn't matter as rep
Being salty helps. Really. It helps DreamWorks to determine what worked well and what didn’t in their latest season.
Though I understand how some fans felt queerbaited by VLD, the fact that it is the only thing addressed in JDS letter tells me DW is waving a hand over all the other implications. DreamWorks didn’t want to address all they did to Shiro, so instead, they apologize for the least offensive issue and hope people will be satisfied. (From my ask box, they are not.)
melissa18999 said: So even the execs thought that shiro was an interesting character. I can see why. The writers wrote him to have one of the saddest backstories ever and he’s the only human on the team that has experienced the galra’s bullshit first hand. The other 4 paladins pilot voltron because they’re told to. There doesn’t seem to be the same drive that shiro had. Sure there’s Pidge but she was the one trying to quit voltron to save her family. removing shiro exposed the others lack of a call to action.
It exposed that practically none of the other characters had any stakes in Voltron. We can say that Hunk received his stake in Season 1 when fighting for the Balmera, and Keith’s stake was Shiro. Lance? Nope. Never really had one and really never got one, considering his family was safe and sound on Earth. You could make the argument that he cares for Allura and wants to be a better paladin because of her, but...we don’t actively see him trying to do it for her. We saw him trying to be a better paladin before she and he connected.
And now they’ve removed the aforementioned motivating character from Voltron. Yeah. Not cool.
The thing about the execs liking Shiro and demanding that he gets a better role... is that we always hear about creatives who want to get rep on screen but the EEEBIL executives say no. And here we have a case where the creatives saw a mentally ill disabled poc character that broke all stereotypes, and they could see no place for him in the cast, while the execs recognised his incredible potential and wanted him to shine. So I have zero sympathy for the EPs here. The execs were RIGHT, damnit!
The reason I liked VLD S1/2 so much was because it broke tropes. Shiro is strong leader but also needs help. Allura is a warrior princess and isn’t scared to go toe-to-toe with the emperor of the universe. Keith and Shiro hug. Look, no matter how you view their relationship, hugs just don’t happen in cartoons, especially between men. So I just loved that part so much. and it made Voltron progressive. (You can share and show your feelings and not be scorned for it.)
Oh, and Lance was originally the heart of the team, not Allura. She became so after moving into Voltron, but having a male character being the heart? That was groundbreaking, too.
Sure, VLD had its issues, but the show was empowering to so many marginalized groups - until Season 3.
perhaps the worst part of Shiro's placement is that he's effectively become the side character of an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SERIES. I've started watching robotech, and CANNOT see the atlas as anything but the ship from that (down to the transformation), or the MFEs as a mix of Vehicle Voltron and the robotech fighters.
I would argue that the worst part about Shiro’s placement is that Shiro is no longer a part of the eponymous character, has no family, and is a multiple-minority character who proved that he can not only be a part of the team but also be the strongest part.
And then Voltron decided to show people who identified with Shiro - that’s not the case. In fact, you can’t even be a part of the team or win your own battles. You have to rely upon others to do so.
But you have a valid point. That part’s bad, too.
Please note: I received more asks with VLD Season 7 reactions. I’ve answered some on my blog, but I’ve also deleted a few that were too harsh to post.

for the last question you mentioned "there were too many rules preventing" the writers from getting their conflict anywhere else than Eddy: do you have any ideas about these rules that developed S1-3?
The rules are all about limiting the scope of the show to keep it consistent to the Eds’ viewpoint.  Seasons 1-3 thrive under these rules, but season 4 struggles to find new directions to go in, taking a toll on the character development.
1.  Summer only
2.  Kids only
3.  No new characters
4.  No new voices
5.  Avoid new locations (this is the rule they are most willing to budge on in early seasons, but season 4 felt to me like it was stuck in the cul-de-sac and wasn’t allowed to leave as much as earlier or later seasons)
(I feel like I thought of a 6th rule and forgot it while I was typing, feel free to suggest any you feel I forgot)
The digital era decided to loosen the grip a little and toy with this formula more, giving the writers more to draw inspiration from, eventually getting the characters back to developments I liked.  The rules are altered:
1. We can also explore fall and winter
2. Adults exist but need to be kept offscreen (gradually broken during BPS Act 3)
3. Other kids exist but are either invisible or silhouettes as an atmospheric choice (allowed to be broken in Easter Egg photos)
4. New voices are cheated a few times
5. NEW LOCATIONS ARE A-OKAY
