Day 6. 30 Day Writing Prompt

“I’m with him. For better or for worse.”

“It’ll probably be worse.”

“I knew that the day I met him.”

Samantha wrinkled her nose with the way she said that line, quickly jotting down a note for herself.

“There’s nuts, there’s crazy, then there’s you two.”

“I want that put on our graves.” Again her nose wrinkles and she writes another note down on her script. She was practicing her audition lines with a friend for yet another play that she’d gotten set up. “That was weak.”

“Yeah somethin’s off with ya today. Usually you ain’t this shit. And I say that with kindness.”

“Sad part is you’re right I’m better than that but today it’s just shit and it needs to get better by tomorrow. Let’s do it a couple more times then we’ll do you.”

Her friend, who had an audition of her own lined up, snickered while flipping pages. “You with ya could get with all this.”

“Oh please if I wanted you I coulda had you a long time ago.”

Day 49

I’m really not sure where I’d be if I wasn’t writing this journal. Every day brings something new, even if that “new” is that I’m going backwards. Or think I am, at least. Feeling pressure about the work on the house, even though I thought I’d relieved the pressure by staying here longer.

Went through some boxes upstairs. We had packed all of our most personal belongings in August when we rented the house to a family from Norway. The wife/mother was a Fulbright scholar and was at the university for a semester. Looking in those boxes was depressing. I know I can’t keep everything. In fact, I can keep virtually nothing. My belongings are packed like I didn’t care about them. The truth is that packing was so painful- as always, hurried. And the decision to move to Florida itself actually was un-thought out. I’m messy that way. I have been messy that way, I mean.

So many pictures of my children. I’m wondering if I can commission a digital artist to create a large, framed print of many of these. Just of them- maybe my parents, too. Not their kids or wives, husbands. I don’t know. Something hurts deeply right now. I don’t know what it is.

Cried earlier listening to a recording of Alfred Molina sing, “Do You Love Me?” from Fiddler on the Roof. I actually saw him in New York. Even got my picture taken with him afterwards. Where that picture is now, is anybody’s guess.

But the song- “Do You Love Me?” The songwriters were explaining that Zero Mostel, in the original production, mined the song for laughs. And Molina was vulnerable and tender. “Do You Love Me?” Such a hard question to ask. Sometimes, a hard question to answer.

My Favorite Broadway Songs

Currently, on my iTunes, my "Broadway Favorites" playlist, I have a total of 126 songs from Broadway musicals. (Keep in mind, that's only my favorites. I have over 500 Broadway songs total.) Well, combined, my list of favorites has 2,205 total plays (Over 17 plays per song). Yeah, I'd say I'm a Broadway Addict.

Top 10 Played:

Schadenfreude- Avenue Q- 62 Plays.

Therapy- Tick, Tick, BOOM!- 49 Plays.

What's Up, Duloc?- Shrek: The Musical- 44 Plays.

Accident Waiting to Happen- Drowsy Chaperone- 44 Plays.

You're The One That I Want- Grease- 42 Plays.

What is This Feeling?- Wicked- 42 Plays.

Turn it Off- Book of Mormon- 40 Plays.

The Song That Goes Like This- Monty Python's Spamalot- 40 Plays.

You and Me (But Mostly Me)- Book of Mormon- 38 Plays.

Hasa Diga Eebowai- Book of Mormon- 38 Plays.

PS: My 11th and 12th songs: Also from Book of Mormon.

So from this list, you can see the apparent obsession with Book of Mormon I had from summer of this year, even before I saw the show for myself.

Wait, it gets even better. In total, I have 14 Book of Mormon songs on my "Broadway Favorites" playlist; not even the entire soundtrack. In total, Book of Mormon songs account for 427 of my 2,205 plays (About 20%). And that is 14 out of my 126 song playlist. Outrageous. I know.

Also note, out of the 8 shows in my Top 10 Played list, I have only seen 4 of them on Broadway. (Avenue Q, Shrek: The Musical, Wicked, and Book of Mormon) And I saw the National Tour of Spamalot when it made it's run through Charleston.

I enjoy getting on YouTube and looking up performances of musicals on the Tony Awards. If I like the performance, I look on iTunes at the music, pick a few songs I like, and buy them. (With Mom's money, of course :P)
