Bukit Lawang, Sumatra, Indonesia Part 3⠀ ⠀ After that first little orangutan baby I was pretty thrilled! It was so innocent and cute and I was able to see it tentatively exploring around/climbing just like a toddler. ⠀ ⠀ After we left we kept hiking and then stopped at a shelter for a snack. The guides laid out a fantastic array of local fruit on a banana leaf table cloth (bonus! no single use plastics!). As we were sitting and eating I heard some rustling in the tree tops and I sprung up and walked in that direction. There was another orangutan coming straight for us with an older male baby (maybe 7 years old). The guides immediately packed up all the fruit and instructed me to put on my pack. This was one of the orangutans they warned us about. She has been known to steal peoples bags to look for food. A female orangutan has the strength of 3 people, and male has 5! ⠀ ⠀ So we were all grouped together and I watched in awe at this "wild" orangutan and her baby crawled to the ground and directly towards us. We kept moving back and away as the guides instructed us. She and the little one walked around inspecting the shelter then move back up into a tree. Once they were back up in the tree the guides said it was safe to get a little closer to them and we got to see some really amazing interactions. I would really tell how much the mom loved her baby, she was gently stroking him with her hand and giving him kisses. The little boy was even giving her kisses, but then whipped about to look at us. Maybe he is right around that age when little boys start to think "it's not cool to kiss your mom in public". ⠀ ⠀ Like I mentioned earlier I really didn't know anything about orangutans before arriving to Sumatra. Hoy no he meditado.
Me he levantado a las 6 de la mañana.
Tampoco he hecho yoga.
Tengo la ropa sucia de ayer sin lavar.
Y no me ha dado tiempo.
Tampoco, a hacer pranayama.
No he tenido tiempo porque me he despertado escuchando tus audios
que me han roto el mundo.
Y ahora soy una piedra.
Como Rubén Darío que quería volverse piedra para no sentir nada.
Como él,
pero yo no quiero ser una piedra.
Me gustaría sentir rabia
o celos,
incluso miedo
o tristeza.
Estoy viendo un fuego que está haciendo un vecino,
porque no hay nada más.
Como quien ve un programa de mierda en la tele,
viendo sin ver.
Ya es de noche.
Estoy intentando explicarle a una amiga lo que ha pasado.
Lo intento lo mejor que puedo,
pero una historia tan corta como 5 audios de whatsapp
que prenden fuego a todo lo que pensabas hasta ahora,
son difíciles de resumir en otros 12 audios.

Today was an amazing experience. I was in Indonesia on the Island of Sumatra in a village called Bukit Lawang and visited the Gunung Leuser National Park. This is home to Orangutans and many types of monkeys. It was amazing to have them all around you in their natural environment.
