Facts about the Bulbasaur Family
1. Ivysaur was originally bipedal
That’s right, Ivysaur was initially depicted as being bipedal. Pokemon Red and Blue had a lot of sprites that have differences from how they are depicted today and many fans agree that they are odd. However, some Pokedex entries also imply Ivysaur being bipedal, at least until its flower grows too large. Its original Red/Blue entry states “When the bulb on its back grows large, it appears to lose the ability to stand on its hind legs.” Later games, including Sword and Shield, repeat this entry.
2. Ivysaur was also the first Pokemon created out of the Bulbasaur family
Ivysaur was one of the very first monsters created for the Capsule Monsters pitch, before evolution was even conceptualized. Venusaur was later designed as its evolution, who was then used to base Bulbasaur on. This makes Bulbasaur the last of its family to be created.
3. The flower on Venusaur’s back is based on the corpse flower
The flower on Venusaur resembles the rafflesia arnoldii, which is also known as the corpse flower. It is a large flower with a strong and foul odor which is often compared to decaying fish and rotting corpses.
4. Bulbasaur is only one of two starters to have a dual-type in its base form.
Bulbasaur is a Grass/Poison type and was the only base starter to have a second type until the Grass/Flying Rowlet was introduced in Generation VII.
5. The names of the Bulbasaur family were censored on the GTS in Generation V
The censor for the GTS censored Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, and Venusaur because their names contained the letters ‘sau’ which also happened to spell an offensive German word. Because of this, players had to nickname their Pokemon from the Bulbasaur line if they wanted to trade them.
6. Venusaur is the first Pokemon in the national dex to have a gender difference.
It may seem subtle, but starting in Generation IV, Venusaur gains a small gender difference. Females have a seed in the center of their flowers that males do not. This seed disappears if a female Venusaur mega-evolves or gigantamaxes since gender differences are not retained.

Them putting every starter Pokemon in the Terarium is genius, because I'd imagine people being like, "An artificial nature biome for Pokemon to live? Why the hell would I want to go there when nature is everywhe-"
"We have every starter Pokemon."

and now to reveal the true purpose of a pokemon au: giving all the characters pokemon so I can imagine cute little scenarios w/ them and their mons.
So for ‘Hikaru’ I’m feeling a Ninetales and Yanma. Ninetales was Hikaru’s; Yanma he caught in the summer. The stone for evolving Vulpix was a gift from his late father, and he had the Vulpix much earlier than was typical training age. Yoshiki can’t remember a time Hikaru didn’t have a Pokemon by his side. At the same time, Hikaru was never very good with Pokemon, so Ninetales remained the only member of his team.
Then Yoshiki has a Grimer, Teddiursa, and Murkrow. He got the Grimer as a kid while visiting Tokyo as they’re quite common in densely populated areas- less so in cleaner rural areas, making it’s an odd sight in Kubitachi. Teddiursa is a much more common pokemon, and while it is cute, its evolution is less so for how dangerous it is. Murkrow are generally despised as pests. Known pranksters, the ones on the mountains are blamed for a lot of missing people as they’re known to lead people astray. Yoshiki’s team choices are widely discussed and criticized.
Next few are less set in stone:
Asako: Azumarill, Flaafy
Yuuki: Ivysaur
Maki: Elekid, Magikarp (based on two in-universe baseball teams)

#001. Bulbasaur
Bulbasaur can be seen napping in bright sunlight. There is a seed on its back. By soaking up the sun's rays, the seed grows progressively larger.
Colour and symbol charts can be found here.
A note on colours: in my experience, floss looks different irl than in online pattern makers. If you think a different colour will work better, go with your gut!

This raid is sooo difficult. I hate Venusaur. I think that may be the entire species. It’s annoying. It poisoned Medusa three times in one battle
On the other hand, I think Medusa isn’t that bad. It may be a jerk that attacked Aurelius for no reason but it’s helped me against Commander so I trust it

“Bulbasaur can be seen napping in bright sunlight. There is a seed on its back. By soaking up the sun’s rays the seed grows progressively larger.”
“When the bud on its back starts swelling, a sweet aroma wafts to indicate the flower’s coming bloom.”
“Venusaur’s flower is said to take on vivid colors if it gets plenty of nutrition and sunlight. The flower’s aroma soothes the emotions of people.”

Learned something absolutely world-shattering about the pmd games today (or at least explorers, no idea if it applies to the other games or not)
So uhh... Evolution? Turns out it provides absolutely no increase in stats whatsoever, doesn't even affect your exp curve. I guess because you can't evolve until the post-game and they wanna keep it balanced enough?
Pretty much the only things that change when you evolve are an expanded movepool, the aesthetics, and the sad lack of extra assets 😭

I gotta say “Pokemon whose names imply they’re based on one thing/everyone generally agrees they’re x, but when you look at their design it’s clear they’re based on something completely different” is a weird subgenre
